2025 Australian Business Death Predictions (in Administration/Bankruptcy/etc.)

Comments

    • Harvey Norman is a real estate investor disguised as a retailer. Because he got in so early, he is sitting on a lot of property worth a lot of money.

  • in Administration/Bankruptcy

  • Good Guys

    • +3

      But they’re owned by jb?

      • +2

Yes, but they need to hide those telstra break fee losses somewhere.

  • +1

I expect Williams Sonoma to fold soon.

Any small businesses that don't own their properties to go to the wall too.

Maybe even online businesses like Everten/Kitchenwarehouse as well.

  • +11

The whole state of Victoria going belly up.

    • +1

Nah mate. You've got Eddy Maguire.

    • +6

The old joke: Q: "What's the capital of Victoria?". A: "A dollar fifty"

But seriously, states cannot go belly up because constitutionally their debt is guaranteed by the Commonwealth. And the "Vic in massive debt" meme is not completely wrong but it is hugely overstated - an AA debt rating for a province is still pretty good internationally.

It only looks bad in comparison to WA and Qld, who are drowning in cash from mining export royalties and some incredibly generous deals with the feds on revenue sharing (made by the last government for political reasons).

      • +5

only looks bad in comparison to WA and Qld

It looks bad relative to all states if you ask me…

        • There's an airport you know?

          • @Protractor: No train line, plebs

            • @MrThing: Surprised Labor haven't put in a monorail, with Homer at the front.

              • @McFly: I hear those things are awfully loud

                • @SupeNintendoChalmers: I thought they glide as softly as a cloud, but I'll take your word for it.

                  • @McFly: Is there a chance the track could bend?

                    • @ajr5k: On an unrelated note, can I enquire as to your religion?

                      • @McFly: I'm a person of science.

                        • +1

@ajr5k: In that case: not on your life my person of science friend.

                          • @McFly: What about us braindead slobs?

                            • +1

@ajr5k: This is Victoria - goes without saying!

      • +1

The current government is more than welcome to renegotiate the GST deal with WA - but they won't as they'd lose 4 seat at the next election and maybe government.

        • +1

Just wait till WAs one trick pony economy collapses when the iron ore price goes down

          • @MrThing: Dutch disease - it's inevitable and unavoidable. When it does happen, the whole country will suffer - as it did in the past.

            It is what it is.

        • +2

Hasn't Gina already paid for the next election result?

          • @Protractor: Probably

          • @Protractor: 100% her and News Corp have stitched up the next election.

            • +1

@SupeNintendoChalmers: If you look at the toxic mud thrown at Albanese and the inflation of those issues,it's a sure thing. Those who install Dutton et al will have a bout 5 mins post election to see the folly. If ppl think it's a struggle now, wait for the attack on all the gains on aged/child/disabled care, training etc. The over the top attacks on Albanese over the Synagogue attack, shows which other powerful money is behind the plan.
The fact is Labor have done better with what they had (inherited + global circumstances) than the LNP could have done or will do. But ppl(voters) are too stupid for their own good.
You'll also note that Dutton is actually now using the same phrasing as Trump used to win.No coincidence Gina is in bed with China and Trump at the same time. That's how she rolls.
Would not be surprised to see her get 'special privileges' with all her businesses going fwd. It's how the LNP rolls

              Dutton is a fake.

              • +1

@Protractor: Its ridiculous. The attacks on the Synagogue in Melbourne is shameful, but the media deliberately ignores to report that over the last couple of months, numerous mosques have been attacked.

Both are horrible events, but the bias is so glaringly obvious, its no surprise people are upset with sections of the media.

                • @SupeNintendoChalmers: The world has lurched right, and the tools in that toolbox are made to benefit the rich, the powerful and the warmongers. There's oligarchs and megalomaniacs running most of the most dangerous existential arsenals on earth and they control global economies and all the humans beneath them, are locked into proxy slavery , but simultaneously fed diarrhoea from Murdoch et al, that 'we're on your side'.
                  LOL.

                  • @Protractor:

                    The world has lurched right,

Both sides are being played by the "oligarch and megalomaniacs". The left were infiltrated & subverted decades ago.

                • @SupeNintendoChalmers:

over the last couple of months, numerous mosques have been attacked.

Yeah, can't find anything about this. Got any links?

                  • @McFly: of course you can't! Media silence.

Two instances near where I live

Noble Park Mosque- pelted with rocks

                    Rowville Mosque- attempted break-in

and this doesn't include the calls they no doubt receive.

                    • @SupeNintendoChalmers: I'd love to see the trashbags who did those jailed, but it's hardly the same thing.
How many places get rocks/break-ins? There'd be 'no space left in the papers' to report on anything else.

  • What about Prezzee?

    • They are doing well. Make a lot of money from breakage (expired gift cards) but it takes years to flow through so it's a liability until it does.

  • +4

Damn. I'm disappointed this isn't related to Luigi Mangione!

  • +3

I hope it is Afterpay. 6% fee for small business because they “advertise” you on page 120 of their website lol

More realistic is Target. Once leases expire in locations with nearby Kmart I don’t see them being renewed.

    • The Target in Melbourne CBD became a Kmart. I think you are probably correct.

    • the 6% fees is for them taking the risk of lending to dodgy buyers! if the buyer don't pay up, your small business still get pay. It's a bargain if you ask me.

  • -1

    Victorian labor party

    • +11

      Victorian "Liberal" Party. lol

      • They already went bust.

    • +4

Dunno, they got a flogging with the Onion Fiasco.

      • +1

If it isn't broke, you don't try to fix it.

(But if it is broke, Bunnings have the lowest prices for the Tools you need). lol

    • +2

OK, going out on a limb here…

You can enjoy vegetables, vegan food, tofu, AND Coles economy snags.

      • +3

I have never been accosted by a vegan in my life.

I have been almost bored to death multiple times by people who complain about them.

    • Snagger zombies, on the prowl for charred flesh.
      Solution?
(I hear vegans taste like crocodile, which tastes like chook)

      Price check! Ozito chainsaw!.

  • +3

    Also…

Bank Branches will close on 30 June and never reopen.

Just ATM's then and $3 a go with Comm Bank and a a series of Advts

while you wait for your money.

  • +4

Kathmandu, Superdry. Overpriced speciality clothes with high margins but also mid to high rents to pay, so if as I suspect business falls off a bit they could teeter.

Kathmandu have BCF, Anaconda to compete with, where you can get more of what you need for actual camping etc.

Superdry quality and brand profile fell off years ago, amazed they've lasted this long.

    • +3

I bought some super dry polos this year and thought they were alright on sale at $49. Had to look for a while though as was specifically chasing the ones with small logo , not the ones with the a4 sized F off billboard style size logo

    • also Macpac (with BCF, macpac, rebel and supercheapauto all owned by super retail group)

I'd see Kathmandu's retail presence shifting, but they're still very high margins on their stuff, and plenty of people seem to shop even above the "the discounted sale price that should be the regular price"

      • +1

Only buy Kathmandu's during their clearance sales + loyalty vouchers, but they've changed T&C for birthday voucher with a min spend which is annoying.

Their quality has also taken a hit- I have a pair of merino socks purchased maybe 8-10 years ago which is of decent quality but can't find that now.

      • Macpac is in a different tier to Anaconda.

        • Kathmandu and Macpac ar practically the same store with different logos. Anaconda doesn't feel as premium because it is a big store selling everything, but I'd argue that you could find the equivalent of a trip to Macpac or Kathmandu in an Anaconda when you look at the clothing section. (this possibly depends on what you tend to shop for at Macpac).

IIRC Macpac does have that 'elite' range that they promote as being done by the 'NZ Alpine Team' - but I could never find that stuff in a regular store, and isn't what people actually buy. It's what lends credibility to their regular stuff that is what it is when it's on sale.

          • @quick-dry: IMHO Macpac and Kathamandu aren't even comprable. If you are a serious hiker or backpack camper then Macpac has the more innovative products that are closer to the range available in the US.

IMO the Alpine team stuff isn't even a consideration for me.

Just my experience buying outdoor gear in the last 10 years.

    • Superdry

Superdry is part of Brand Collective, and if you think they are over priced, you haven't been looking. They are pretty low/mid range. Some of the stand alone boutiques may close, but they will just hang around in Myer and David Jones.

      • i agree, Country road prices are now crazy!

  • Recaro car seats

  • Flexicar hopefully. Most bugs in an app I've ever seen.

  • Nissan Flagged they are close to Bankruptcy i think

They are good cars but i think the cult of Toyota is hard to breech

    • +1

Highly doubt if the Japanese government will let Nissan go busted. Worst is they will become part of Mazda or Honda and sell off their stack of Mitsubishi to a competitor.

      • There you go

Nissan and Honda announce plans to merge.

    • They are good cars but i think the cult of Toyota is hard to breech

Not so much that I don't believe, more just their model line-up has shrunk so much.

I agree to Nissan as well given how they're going in the US, and not much better here

    • -1

Nissan Flagged they are close to Bankruptcy i think
They are good cars but i think the cult of Toyota is hard to breech

too much Renault ugly stick used in the drawing rooms in the past 20 yrs

  • +1

    Sydney Trains
    Red Rooster and/or El Jannah
    Some Woolworths stores

  • +3

Victorian Government deserves a shout under Alan

  • +3

Maybe Suzuki and Honda. If not 2025, in a few years. Honda prices are ridiculous for what you get. They used to be great.

Some retail that potentially could disappear soon:
    1. Dusk
    2. Cettire
    3. City Chic Collective
    4. Ezymart

    • I used to think… man how can dusk survive? I never see anyone in there… then my misso placed a $300 order… so idk.

      • Definitely has its market and their latest sales release wasn't actually that bad. I just think at some point people will find it hard to justify shelling out the cash for what they sell.

    • +1

Ezymart sells visas to foreigners wanting to get a PR through investment, they're not in the business of selling snacks/tobacco/drinks…

  • Shred-X document shredding .
One of the worse companies you could deal with. Can't keep drivers. Pick up on the wrong day at the wrong place and sometimes take the wrong bin ! Or don't turn up at all.
They deserve to go bust !

    • I miss doing shredding. that was a pretty cruisey job. and some interesting stuff ended up in the archive boxes….

  • +1

Rivers (a Mosaic brand) are still sending 7 to 500 million emails a day!

  • +1

    Nandos

I feel like their pricing these days is a sharp contrast jacked up from pre-covid.

Most of their places I’ve seen and been to are seldomly packed like they used to be.

    • +1

Nandos used to be the place to go. Now it’s like the stores are invisible.

  • Oaks Hotels & Resorts, hopefully!

    • Why? Last time my uncle and his wife and children stayed in the hotel in Sydney CBD. CBD and any tourist locations should be fine, I think.

      • I can't say but look at what happens when they occupy buildings where people live in.

  • +7

El Jannah - too many stores too quickly plus quality going down hill, is a recipe for stores closures or total business going under

    • It's swapped hands quite a few times over the years

    • +1

Not sure if it's me, but the quality seems to have gone downhill. Ordered some tenders the other day and they were tiny little chicken fingers. I swear the tenders actually used to be proper big pieces of chicken breast.

  • +1

A few Daniel's Donuts franchises, prices aren't as appealing nowadays, and depending where I find the franchise, I think how fresh are the donuts if they are a pop up store.

A few more real estate agents will probably fold up or merge with other businesses as costs go up and up.
A few auto mechanics will also close up due to costs , bad reviews and fewer people servicing cars.

  • +4

I am surprised no one has mentioned Thr Star Entertainment Group SGR is down over 95% over the last 5 years and is just hanging on to there licences being suspended and lacking liquid funds but are asset rich and have just opened a new Casino / Resort in Brisbane tho if the new CEO Steve McCann can turn the ship around like he did with Crown then it should be a multi bagger in a couple of years. Not financial advice do your own research.

    • +2

I'd be surprised if casino go under as too many gamblers in this country. Even bikies like to launder money, lol. The easiest thing to do is just sell the company to the other bigger company just like Crown in Sydney.

    • +2

There is always money to be made from gamblers, especially in Australia. Stars issues are with their management and obviously their multiple run ins with the law/regulators. If they clean themselves up they are potentially a great buy, but that is a big if.

  • +4

Going by this list, Coles, Woolworths and Bunnings will be the only places open in the future

    • Like Costco in the film 'Idiocracy'.

  • +4

Does the Brisbane CBD need an Ezymart on every street corner? I can't see them all lasting (like when Pie Face was on every second street corner too)

    • Convenience stores are okay if they are located in high foot traffic locations, even in Sydney. At least people buy coffee and/or snacks or whatever. Not many staffs in the store as one of the ongoing cost. Same thing with 7-Eleven stores.

  • +2

    Crazy Johns I’m thinking

  • +4

    Victorian state government

    • +2

ROFL they won’t go under but they will increase state taxes on the population to recover what they keep overspending on everything.
      Expect:
      - public transport fare costs to rise
      - Police and speed camera fines to rise and more of them
      - Cost of vehicle Registration to rise significantly
      - Cost of property and taxes relating to property to rise significantly.
      - new taxes…
      - possibly further privatisation of state owned assets in the future to pay for the gross mismanagement of funds. (This would be a successive government though)
(Unsure if there’s anything left they can privatise apart from hospitals and the railways) more toll roads perhaps or the introduction of new tolls…?

Only thing that might happen is a federal government bailout.

And anything else the state government might do to claw back money from the black hole they’re in.

But this is all related to whoever is in power. A crying shame they can’t get their act together.

All I know is that I am happy I don’t live in Victoria.. the next 5 years will be informative.

      • -2

Victoria's economy was killed by a glut of baristas and cafes (too much drinking/not enough thinking) and a faint hope that somehow the MCG was a god that defecated money via AFL.(the footy will save us, oh thanks cash cow)
What is the level of organised crime like compared to NSW based on population levels?

      • Read an article today, Vic government implemented a payroll tax on businesses to increase revenue. Just glad I’m not there

      • Pity they don't curb spending.

All the fat-cat bureaucrats and perks for ex-premieres and politicians should be number one on the list.

      • +2

Police and speed camera fines to rise and more of them

I don't mind this one rising. It's a voluntary contribution after all lol. Plus they'll need to raise them to pay for the police union demands.

Cost of vehicle Registration to rise significantly

Personally, should be based on GVM of vehicle, EVs and Monster Utes should have higher regos, the latter is more likely to be involved in an accident.

possibly further privatisation of state owned assets in the future to pay for the gross mismanagement of funds.

Surely we don't have much left to sell?

All I know is that I am happy I don’t live in Victoria.. the next 5 years will be informative

People like to punch down on Vic, but its still a pretty grouse place to live. It's first for Education, has the best eateries and coffees, is the sporting and cultural capital of Australia, and climate change will probably mean we'll have nicer weather.
