Taco Bell - especially regional mostly empty

    • +1

I agree. I don't know how they survive given how quiet they are. They're basically selling overpriced, not that great food.

    • My wife loves Taco Bell. Borderline obsessed with it. She would kill for a store in South Australia. `

  • +6

Australia's monetary system. So that everyone can accept CBDC under duress.

    • +1

CBDC’s only use case is being able to trace exactly who and where money has come and gone to. This is a shocking potential overreach of government authority to see where each dollar goes to.
      Welcome to China.
Also logistically it would be a bloated system. If you knew anything about databases you would not be able to purge irrelevant and erroneous information out of it. a CBDC would be a waste of time and money both from setting up, maintaining and from government oversight.

      • I agree, but it will happen whether we like it or not. The ability to be able to control the flow of money is Uncle Mustache Wet Dream.

  • The reject shop - although they might thrive in a cost of living crisis.

More jewellers deserve to go bankrupt: proud, Michael hill. But might not..

Some retail groups are struggling especially clothing stores:
    City Beach
    Just Jeans
    Sports girl
Are some that come to mind

Other places that should go are niche places that only sell one furniture item or specialisation thing:
    Snooze

Places that should go but won’t:
    Harvey Norman

    • +1

The Reject Shop doesn't look too dire based on their latest releases. Seems like they have focused on stores that perform okay.

    • +1

      Just Jeans

They have been bought out by Myer. So they won't be going bankrupt, at least not in the short term. But they will be closing a lot of stores, and consolidated into Myer. Myer will then be filled up with even more of their home brands with better margins. So Myer will probably be a mix of concession brands and home brands with a sprinkle of own buy brands thrown in.

    • Some Crunch fitness locations
    • LSKD
    • Tesla if they dont lower prices to compete with chinese EV manufacturers. Think Elon should focus on spaceX as space exploration is the next $T industry.
    • Premium supps. The TGA is already auditing their products. Few products already been withdrawn.
    • Ill also add Fossil Group (at least in Australia, not global).

    • +2

What make you say LSKD? I saw a new store in Chadstone I've started seeing the brand more and more.

      • Yep, haven't looked into them much as a brand but they have pretty great sales volumes and are internationally sold.

  • +4

    Jaguar lol

    • +1

They'll be fine. Since they "Copy Nothing", they'll release five wheel cars and the marketplace will love it.

  • +2

It puzzles me that why an unemployment rate is still low despite these bankruptcies.

    • Purchasing parity can still be down due to inflation and there are a lot of casual/part time roles but still would be hard to splurge on them. Also interest rates have taken out a fair bit of disposable income.

    • +7

No puzzle. They likely manipulate parameters & criteria for what constitutes "unemployed". Data massage.

      • +1

Yeah, I agree. They're a pack of liars; when will we learn this?

        • +3

          https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/detailed-methodology-infor…

If anyone can read & understand the link above, I take my hat off to them.

"People who only looked in newspapers or at job advertisements on the internet are seen as passively, rather than actively, looking for work and so are not considered unemployed."

          Hilarious.

          • +3

            @mrdean: 'Unemployed'©®™

I ploughed through most of it "1984 was supposed to be a warning, not a manual!"

"You're only homeless if you're bidding in real estate auctions or lining up for rental inspections"

Ah well, I better not say too much about it. Humour and laughter are a sign of sanity though. Chin up lads!

    • +2

According to AFR, public sectors are booming (age care, ndis, etc…), employing lots of people while private sectors are dying …

      • Or as I call those, the dying industry.

    • A relative of mine doesn't work but also refuses to sign up for unemployment benefits. It's apparently 'beneath him' to do so. He's therefore not counted in the unemployment statistics. Much easier to keep asking dad for more money.

      • Not your problem or the tax payer then?

  • Tree of Life

ebgames (I like eb but my local shop is never busy even on a saturday)
retravision (apart from sales they never busy also, i do like the extra rac discount)
coffee club (again apart from maybe 1-2 hours peak times, never seen any business)
opsm (are they ever had a busy day?)
reddot (junks all over, never busy in my local store)

Also i would like to add one that i want to go broke but not a chance it will:

    Harvery Norman!

    • I forgot EB was still a thing

    • +3

I am shocked really that eb still exists, they are owned by Gamestop which of course is really only alive themselves from the share shenanigans and are on a huge store closure spree for Gamestop so I think eb days are numbered.

    • +2

EB survives on merchandise sales, not games. When people stop buying Funkopops EB will go pop.

    • coffee club

its funny, the one at my local westfield is actually usually quite busy before, during and after lunch phase.
it is mostly oldies though…so i guess the time is ticking on that one.

    • +1

OPSM isn't going anywhere. The markup on glasses is ridiculous. $300 frames literally cost $5 to make in China. They only need to sell a few pairs a day to turn a profit.

      • Not to mention they are part of Luxottica who own essentially all the brands they sell too or will end up owning them, like with what happened with Oakley.

  • +1

    House (gbra)
    Nando's Australia
    Every coffee shop
    Hopefully Grill'd

  • +3

Zambrero. Their blended "meat" they serve with icecream scoops is disgusting.

  • +2

Ozbargain to be listed in ASX

  • Probably more Melbourne centric

    Huxtaburger
    New York Minute

    • i havent been to huxtaburger since around 2020 (i live interstate ) - and both times i quite enjoyed it - but purely because it was so OTT. i prob wouldnt go if i actually lived in melbourne.

on the topic of melbourne food - how is lord of the fries still open? I mean..yeah they are strategically located to cater to hungover patrons mainly…but surely that cant prop them up soley..

      • +2

I was going to mention Lord of the Fries but year after year they are still there. They have a vegetarian/vegan value proposition so maybe they are propped up by that?

  • +1

I think people make the mistake of thinking its the business that they love to hate that will go bust, rather than the business that they feel nostalgic about but that they simply don't frequent any more.

  • Many low performing/family owned servos that are near a new/ newly converted OTRs all across the country, especially if they are knocked down and rebuilt with their full offering.

OTR are very aggressive and very successful. Its a bit like bunnings moving into a suburb with a family owned mitre 10.

South Australians will know what i mean.

  • +1

Tesla will quit Australia … close enough.

  • +3

    Going to call it……. Priceline

Any medicinal needs, Chemist Warehouse. Any personal care needs, Mecca, Sephora, etc. People are just not shopping in Priceline anymore.

    • Nahhh, Woolies and Wesfarmers both were interested in taking over them a few years ago. There's too much value in the business/sector.

      • Wesfarmers already own Priceline. They acquired API who own the Priceline brand in 2022.

    • Apparently they're in the process of converting the non-pharmacy stores to Atomica, half way between supermarket and mid range brand.

  • +4

skechers? - the shop fits are usually really nice from the ones I've seen…but i basically never see any customers in there.

platypus/hype ? - similarly, also usually have a pretty nice shop fit in the ones ive seen - but its like..whats their target audience - I also kind of remember seeing a lot more posts about these two businesses - lately not a whole lot. High end premium/ scalper target shoes I usually think foot locker , or one of those boutique ones like upthere or subtype.

a work wear place - not sure which one, as I usually use workwearhub as they seem to have the cheapest prices and best range anytime Ive needed anything, and promise free returns and got an app to go with the website. I feel this is one area where targeting the younger trades people and associated workers with higher disposable spending is probably going to choke out the smaller businesses. Places like Totally work wear did a re-brand and a re-do of some shops planned for this year and going forward - RSEA has other complementary products like anti-fatigue mats and other safety products etc.

  • +2

Guzman Y Gomez, they think they can charge Chipotle prices at Taco Bell quality

    • +1

Second this. The bigger they get the worse their quality gets, it's really disappointing.

    • +4

They just had an IPO, they’re dripping in investment dollars. But agree with you, they don’t deserve to succeed

      • +2

Depends on Guzman location, there's some awesome and some trash….But not happy they floated; it'll inevitably go down in quality.

  • +2

    Not Australian, but Volkswagen.

    • +1

They'll take some hits but will survive

    • +1

Nissan will die before VW. Nissan is reportedly trying to tie up with Honda. That's like two drowning people grabbing at one another.

      • True. I thought Nissan was done before the end of this year lol

  • +1

My dark horse Australian pick is Aquila. Always empty, high foot traffic, high rent locations. 35 stores Australia wide. I have no idea how they have survived so long.

    • Not to mention subpar quality products at exorbitant prices.

      • That is it. I'm not seeing the consumer advantage of going to a place like that. Unless you were going to try stuff on and then buy online?

  • +1

Not Australian but service available here - Disney+

    • +1

I feel when the 2025 Disney price hike happens many loyal subscribers will jump ship and never come back. OnePass/Catch abandoned them and even Hubbl won't bundle them for a $5 discount.
$14 isn't bad but it once was $7 (and the yearly was $79). Granted Disney+ have invested heaps into quite a few new franchised shows but no other streaming service has doubled in price post-Covid.

      • Exactly my thoughts!

  • man im so sad that booktopia and rex went under. I understand why but they were so good for what they were in terms of customer service and consistency

  • +1

    Harvey Norman.

  • +3

I can't wait for all the bike share services to die. They clutter everywhere.

    • +2

Add E-scooters to that list. Local councils gouging locals, so some gimps get to play on and then dump a scooter in their suburb.
Great business model. Use the most incompetent, wasteful corrupt layer of govt to pour $$$ into your coffers.Keep rising the rice each year, add a few more scooters, rinse and repeat.I'll bet there are clauses in some of the contracts that mean councils share losses of missing scooters.

  • +1

Retailers that regularly send me no min spend $10-15 vouchers for no particular reason. David Jones and BCF

    • You should have used these free vouchers ;-) It's part of marketing strategy to entice you with small vouchers to shop with them.

I have got several free expensive chocolates, cookies, and other food from David Jones free vouchers. Just create new accounts with different emails and phone numbers. Set filter of price with max $10 or $15 or $20 depends on the total voucher value (welcome voucher and birthday voucher can be stacked together in 1 transaction too).
