No but I have seen the ioniq

        • +3

I walked past an Ioniq 5 just this morning in the Valley, I see one maybe once a week
I knew it was a 5 cause the tail-lights look cool (IMO)

          • @theguyrules: man I haven't even seen the ioniq 6 which is there new one on the road.

            • +2

@kungfuman: I love it. Someone at my kids school has one.

            • @kungfuman: They are different cars though not replacements for one another

              • +1

@Shadowsfury: Oh yeah, just saying I don’t have the money for a Kia or Hyundai ev - need to go Chinese ;)

                • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: the battery replacements with Hyundai are ridiculous apparently saw this one guy in Canada get footed with a 60k CAD bill to replace his battery. Hyundai blamed the customer even those it wasn't his fault.

      • I notice more Model 3 Highlands around our area than Seals. There are probably even more Atto vehicles than Model 3 Highlands, although most Atto cars have DiDi or Uber logos in the window, as they've been on the market longer.

I did a test drive of a BYD Seal Performance with its "3.8s" badge. While it is quick in a straight line, its road manners and dynamics are awful. A person trying to drive fast around a corner would be safer in the most basic Toyota sedan or hatchback, as it doesn't have the handling to match its speed. I'd call it unsafe. Matt @ carwow reviewed the Seal Performance on the track and found that it tends to oversteer very easily. It would be great on a skid pan with plenty of space, but not on the road.

Additionally, a YouTuber discovered that the Seal "AWD" models didn't use the rear wheels in reverse. https://youtu.be/eENx7rscQ80

Although this has been fixed with a software update, that is a significant oversight in testing.

Fortunately, the Seal Performance is unlikely to cause any deaths, as most people I've seen driving one are over 65, or at least drive as if they are.

    • +5

I see plenty in Brisbane tbh. Nowhere near as many as Teslas of course.

    • +3

Heaps of Atto3 recently in Adelaide - they seem to have become fleet cars for some too

    • +3

Anyone else find the Tesla's bland to look at?

      • +5

I find it hard to look at Teslas generally. Their headlights are always blinding you.

        • +8

          Less features? Tell me more!

          • -6

@sh4hp: I already did. no OPD, poor ADAS and a horrible UI on that silly rotating screen
Teslas are so much better to own and drive. Go see for yourself

            • +6

@choofa: I did. Sat and drove both, and driving experience was much better in the BYD. Agree that then UI is not as refined.

Tesla gave me claustrophobia, and I didn't even know I had it.

              • -8

@sh4hp: The seal is a soft floaty model 3 copy. It’s a substandard effort and overall is not a better car.
It’s like that weird kid at school who had no personality of his own and just tries to do what the cool kids do

        • +9

At least they have indicator stalks and the speedo on a HUD right in front of the driver.

The UI does leave a bit to be desired imo.

        • +5

No OPD? So it drives like a normal car? Great, I'll order one now.

          • -8

@tp0: How boring to want “normal”

        • +10

It does a far better job of being a car than the Tesla. The Model 3 is a tablet with a car built around it. Having to do basic functions like emergency hazard lights, windscreen wipers, adjusting climate control, changing gears through a screen is insane. The Seal does a good job of giving you the most commonly used functions as buttons and stalks. Sure the UI is comparatively dated, but the ADAS has been updated several times and has improved and OPD while a good feature… id rather lose OPD than indicator/washer stalks, etc. EV's should be attractive to new car owners, not because they are radically different to ICE cars but feel familiar.

          • -5

@sandman87: Changing gears? It’s reverse or drive selector and it’s easy to use when you need it.
One pedal driving is awesome and it’s only BYD EVs that don’t do it at all. Every other manufacturer can do it.
The ADAS in the Seal is awful even if it is better it is light years behind what most other cars can do and have done for many years. It’s not acceptable in a high tech car at all

            • +1

@choofa: Like the alpha version of the "full self driving" in Tesla's? It is a scam that FSD is listed as a purchasable option to make users into guinea pigs

              • @Caped Baldy: It is a scam here but not in the USA.
But the standard autosteer still destroys the lane keep and centering on the BYD

            • @choofa: We can debate which has the better or worse ADAS system, but only one brand has a wiki related to crashes as a result of ADAS deficiencies and errors

              https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tesla_Autopilot_cras…

              • @sandman87: Just like there are zero YouTube videos about how amazing the BYD ADAS is but there are millions for Tesla.

      • +4

        Model Y is Fugly.

        • Agreed! But it will get an update soon and hopefully doesn’t end up looking too much like the cybertruck

          • +1

@choofa: Do you think a new Model Y will maintain the resale value of a Model Y ?

I'm looking at a 2023 Model Y, so curious about this because I don't know much about the EVs and want to try & get a depreciated one.

            • +3

@whyisave: It will tank the resale value of that model y you are currently looking at.

              • @ChickenAdobo: Thanks for telling me this.

I think maybe that's why I keeping seeing a few 2023 Model Y being sold, with 'low mileage'.
Maybe, they already know about this new Model Y coming out (?)

I was looking at the 2023 Model Y, because I still like indicator stalks,
                and liked the boot-space.
Also, I wanted to see if a novated lease would work.

                • +1

@whyisave: if you can hold out longer better to wait for the new Model Y to launch here then grab a secondhand MY23 Model Y. that way you can still get the FBT and depreciation bargain.

                  • @ChickenAdobo: I was hoping to get a 2023 Model Y, through a private sale.
I know I miss out on the GST savings, but I also don't want to "overpay" for one, from a dealer.

My current novated lease is ending soon-ish, so I'm just thinking of some options,
but also don't want to dent any concessional super contributions (which I don't understand clearly yet).

      • Bland, just like Elon, fk that guy!

      • +10

Kids go to school at Sea World?

    • +6

Not sure which Queensland you live in, there's BYDs everywhere in Brisbane

      • the same one that is overwhelmed with teslas.

  • thinking about getting BYD dolphin atm
is it worth the extra $6000 for longer range?

my use case are just driving daily for work (around 30km per day)
not to be used for long range trip
my only concern is whether the battery will be deteriorated overtime and better to get higher capacity at the beginning?

    • +3

Yes. The extra power is worth it. Extra range means you can use the car more often in between charge.

      • +1

Thanks all. looks like I will get the premium range then
will pop into a BYD experience center tomorrow for a close up look

        • Be aware, for apparently lower price, 2025 Dolphin has significantly longer range battery on all models and more comfortable ride on most models.

          • @xcharliex: I went to the BYD experience centre and was told by the salesman that Dolphin will be discontinued in Australia market, not sure it’s true or not

    • +4

      Base dolphin is slooooow.

    • +9

Get the Seal if you can afford the long range dolphin. Its on a different league compared to it. From interior materials to drive comfort to chassis design. Its like comparing a Mazda to BMW.

      • +2

Agreed with this. Friend has dolphin and I have the premium seal.

There's a lot of difference between the two, other than hatch/ sedan.

The seal really is just a lot nicer in every regard. Interior fit out, design, comfort, etc.

To each their own, but yeah, that's my 2c

        • +3

my partner love her VW golf so she probably like hatch than sedan
man and female are always thinking from different aspects LOL

          • @littlesoldier: Oh no denying that.

While mate that got dolphin wishes he got the seal, his wife (still in the forester) is pretty nonchalant about it; she doesn't drive the dolphini believe though.

But to each their own for sure!

        • How the atto 3 compare to Dolphin and Seal, is it really in the middle of Dolphin and Seal quality wise?

          • +1

@Edsanwong: Never driven an atto or even sat in one.

The interior is not to my taste in the slightest so I didn't look.

          • +6

@Edsanwong: I've drove all 3. recently drove the Dolphin as a service loaner car, i own a Seal. Dolphin definitely has the lowest interior quality out of the 3 everything feels cheap and plastic while the Atto3 has more synthetic leather. NVH is not as good as the Seal even the power window is louder and less smooth on the Dolphin. I wouldn't get the Dolphin or the Atto3. I think those cars are over priced. There is a lot of better quality budget cars from brands like Geely, Leapmotor, Aion coming to Australia. I previous own mainly German cars and the Seal feels as good if not better than my C class Merc.

      • +2

Yep, the only reason we went with the Dolphin was because we wanted a smaller car. If you have the space then Seal all the way

    • yes longer range. You will at least have usable range in 10 years when you lose about 20% range.

  • +1

    BYD having a demand problem?

    • +3

      Big Year-end Demand sale

    • -7

BEV sales down 27% since this time last year. Apparently this is how market domination happens… somehow…

      • +1

        Source?

      • +1

ICE sales down 29.8% in the same period, lol

        • ICE sales down 29.8% in the same period, lol

Lol. Sorry what was your point?

      • +3

BYD year over year sales were up +160.1%

        • -1

BYD year over year sales were up +160.1%

160% of not much is still not much. And the key here is that if you've forecast your sales at x, but you're only selling 0.5x then you're not meeting targets and prices drop in order to move stock. This is part of why EV's are dropping in price, the anticipated growth in demand is not there. VFACTS data shows this.

          • @1st-Amendment: The cost is too high for average people and Australia hasn’t started taxing the sale of new polluting vehicles yet. That starts next year.
We are behind the rest of the world yet again

            • -3

              @choofa:

hasn’t started taxing the sale of new polluting vehicles yet

Wait til you learn how batteries are made…

  • What year model is the dolphin? when I click the pdf file it shows 2023.

  • +1

Needs to include installation . That’s the expensive bit. How about a 10 year warranty as an option too. XPENG and MG offer these . BYD need to up their game

    • +1

What is the going rate for installation?

      • +3

A simple install might be about $300 or so. The sky's the limit as things get more complex. All depends on your place.

      • +1

I’ve been quoted $2200 for install. Standard install if your car is close to your main switchboard is around $1100 inc GST

        • Hey mate, can you pm this sparky’s details? (The $180 one lol)

        • +1

DUUUUDE! Most sparkys will charge $180 just get out bed and fart. Nice price though.

          • +2

@Naigrabzo: Yep. People need to check installation prices from real sparkies before running out and order a BYD on this comment. Impossible on $180.

        • +1

LOL $180 to install a charger. You can only get that in a mate's rate (plus throw in a carton of beers).

          • +1

@edfoo: Or a very dodgy job that can burn your house down.

            • @x d: LMAO. Yeah probs use 21 gauge wires that people use for 12V lights.

  • I got this email with the same deal:

    • +4

and if we can get your new car delivered to you before the end of this year

LOL, and if they can't get your new car delivered to you before the end of this year, you don't get the discount or charger.

Make sure you read the T&C's

      • Wow…that's a sneaky gotcha.

      • I was on the phone with multiple reps, very suss promotion. How can you incentivise people to buy with a discount, and not deliver it on time to give them the discount smh

    • Fine print says "in stock vehicles" and "while stocks of eligible vehicles last".

  • +1

    When lambo?

    • +13

You can do a LOT worse than a BYD for the money. They are great value.

      • +1

        I agree.

  • +2

$68k for a performance seal is so tempting especially if you put it on a novated lease.

And the interior actually looks decent unlike the childish atto.

    • +3

Seal Premium is better, unless you plan to race.

      • +4

I do indeed plan on treating the streets like my own personal race track.

      • +1

        why?

in the market, want more power and awd… but ive seen a few people say the Prem is better, but can only talk to the suspension being "better"…
