      Probably the gaming laptops

        what about GAEMING?

    • +1

      Lol, classic JV moment.

      None.

Spend at least $1K on a gaming PC if you're actually planning to play more than Minesweeper/Solitaire.

      • -3

        Don't these have GPUs ?

        • +13

Anyone can have a GPU for free. Just be Generally Positive & Upbeat!

          • +5

            @PainToad: Here's a free one……. never go full jv

      • +4

False. $1K is nice, but a used SFF PC plus basic GPU card can be had for under $300.
$500 will get you an RTX3050, and 16GB 8th-gen, will play plenty.

        • +1

I've got free ex corp coming out my ear. But low cheap, low power, low profile GPUs seem to be a unicorn.

          • @Ulysses31: I got a GT1030 years ago, still going strong.

RTX3050 seems to be the way now. Draws 70W from the PCIe, no special connector needed.
Available in low-profile, double slot, fits Optiplex SFF I beleive.

            • @bargaino: I read countless guides, and they all concluded with 1650. But that will always pull big bucks, hard to find. I'm wondering why none say 3050?

New or used, they're all ~$300
Does my brain need to change? Cos it seems crazy to spend that, comparing to the PC cost

              • @Ulysses31: I just did a quick google, am not up to date.
But if you want a cheap gaming system, it is not at all unusual for the graphics card to cost more than the used office PC you put it in.

                • @bargaino: You've actually helped (confuse me more?), cos the 3050's are actually available, and currently on special at a few places $278.
One 1650 apparently available (and cheap), MSY Tasmania, pickup only.

                  Analysis Paralysis engaged.

                  • @Ulysses31: ryzen m780 igpu with fast ddr5 ram is on par with 1650 these days

when a last gen igpu beats a new gpu it's worth re-evaluating your options

              • @Ulysses31:

Spending that, on these old machines, is absolutely crazy - if you want to play games, then just buy a brand new gaming machine that already includes a modern graphics card - there's plenty of regular deals.

Some years ago, you could buy a then-current card like a 1050 in low profile for $150 and they were a great deal in small machines like this.

But it's now five years later - these cards are now multiple generations old, and they still cost $150 😂 The days of low profile cards and machines are long gone - they don't make sense any more.

        • $500 will get you an RTX3050, and 16GB 8th-gen,

Er, an entire brand new gaming PC with a 4060 is $688 at the moment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/872785

Spending $500 on these old things is absolutely bonkers.

      • +2

There are plenty of respectable gaming PC deals on this very website for about the $700-750 mark.

    • +2

You can put a (very small) GPU into some of the Lenovo ones like the P340. For a 1L sized desktop, it's pretty impressive and might even run one of those single slot 4060s (although I imagine power supply becomes an issue).

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/872785 - I'd wait for another techfast ITX deal like this instead though.

    • +2

The HP Elitedesk 800's might be compatible with an optional HP AMD Radeon RX560 4GB

    • Acer Veriton N4640G Mini.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLUzrH0SipU

It has a 16x PCIe port. You will need to source a PSU for the card and might need to upgrade the power brick this comes with. If you eBay you will find the model with one of those bricks for much less.

  • Hi OP

does the Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Tiny model support 2.5 drive ? seeing conflicting information online
(assuming it has one 8gb ram stick with room for a second?)

i'm pretty sure i have some of these running a customers pos setup

it has the usual dual ddr4 sodimms, single 2.5 sata and an m2 sata

      • I had to cut the bracket to install a 2.5 HDD, as the slot is a bit thin, it is good for Sata SSD but not so good for HDD. Probably why there are conflicting information about it.

  • OP,

Does the M700 and HP 800 G2 mini come with power adaptors?

    • +1

      Hi mate yes.

  • Is the G2 Micro a better buy over the M700? CPU, extra 128gb storage,Wifi and USB-C for an extra $20. Primary use will be HA.

    • +5

      extra 128gb storage,Wifi and USB-C for an extra $20

      That's worth 20 bucks.

  • Hi Op,

Is there any chance you have a cheaper M720Q / M920Q option with a Intel Pentium Gold or i3 processor? Even a barebone unit with just Power Supply will be fine.

Edit: and do you have the pci-e riser for sale?

    • Diy router?

Ingot one last year & it came with windows.

Those p340s are so tempting for the cores/threads. Pcie slot in there too for a NIC.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Does the usb-C on any of the models support video?

  • +1

    Nice selection, OP! Quite tempting.

For those into budget home-labbing I'd recommend the 93 Tiny. Much faster and cheaper than a Raspberry Pi, unless you need GPIO, a GPU or very low power.

The M93p can easily be upgraded to around the speed of a i5-9500t by buying a $22 Xeon e3 1275L v3 off AliExpress.

    • +1

at these prices you are better off going for a new ryzen 5000 series mini pc from aliexpress for around 300

craps all over that weakling xeon - which will actually overheat and thermal throttle as the cooling on these systems are designed for 35W

you must have typed the wrong xeon model as that thing is down 2 cores and 30% less power from the 9500T

      • Yep, I was sorry wrong, I checked mine. Xeon E3-1265L v3 not the ..75L.

It uses 10W more (on paper) than the i5-4750T. Mines been going for over a year. Under Prime95 the cooling system and standard 65W PSU can handle the load.

I actually replaced the Motherboard on an old HP Microserver N36L NAS with the m93 and a 8087-SAS mini-PCIe card.

    • Do you have any recommendations for alternatives to a Raspberry Pi 5 that is both reasonably low power and quiet?

      • +4

        wyze 5070
        fanless
        wifi/bluetooh
16gb mmc (m.2 sata slot free)
        4gb ddr4 ram (2 slots, 1 free)

going for around $60 delivered on ebay

10w TDP, iirc around 3000 passmark score - craps all over pi

better than any intel 6th cpu above since it's much newer gemini lake, ie modern hardware accelerated video encoding/decoding for youtube, plex, 4k etc

        • Thanks, looks interesting - I see some models have a PCI riser. Might make a good firewall box?

          • +2

            @RedHab: yeah, some have

you can also go with the small version and just drop the wifi card and install a 1 or 2 port ethernet mini pci card, there is a pushout tab on the back to accommodate 1 port
            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255876344955

        • what OS to use on these wyze 5070 ? ubuntu?

          • @uccoffee: depends what for, personally i like

            desktop: zorin
            htpc: zorin
            combination htpc/sonarr/radarr/nas: zorin

            server: ubuntu server minimal

virtualisation: proxmox, ubuntu server minimal for virtual machines

        • +1

Thanks for the recommendation! Those look great. I've bought one now.

        • @desync Do you have any recommendations for SSDs for this? Since it only allows for m.2 sata and not m.2 nvme, it seems that options are quite a bit more limited.

  • Which ones have VESA mounts so I can hide behind a screen inc the power adaptor?
Do any come without a power adaptor?

  • -1

Would like an 11th Gen if possible

  • -1

Any of these good for Homebridge setup? Or is RPi better?
    (Power consumption, speed etc)

  • -1

which one is cheapest to do 4k htpc / netflix box ?

    • +2

      check ebay

      dell wyze 5070
      fanless
      wifi/bluetooh
16gb mmc (m.2 sata slot free)
      4gb ddr4 ram (2 slots, 1 free)

going for around $60 delivered on ebay

10w TDP, iirc around 3000 passmark score - craps all over pi

better than any intel 6th cpu above since it's much newer gemini lake, ie modern hardware accelerated video encoding/decoding for youtube, plex, 4k etc

      • +4

Different use case but I rate these. Just be careful with the MMC in terms of wear.

I put a cheap 16GB DIMM for 20GB total and a SATA M.2 for some storage (note it can not be NVMe). Then removed the WiFi card and replaced with a m.2 PCIe NIC. Runs Proxmox and then pfsense in a VM and a few containers for stuff like pihole, gotify and a few others.

Averages about 5-7W. About 10W with 4 cores maxxed out.

        • +1

yeah i used one as a htpc media player and jellyfin server with a 14tb external drive, perfectly fine transcoding 4k

also used as a router with usb ethernet dongle

they are great little machines with modernish hardware, stable 24/7, consume next to nothing and completely silent

          it's all a bit ridiculous for ~$60

          • @desync: Can't find these under $80

            • +2

              @Indomietable: $52 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266079359057

budget for additional, even better if you already have these lying around somewhere
              - m.2 128gb SSD SATA drive ($15)
              - boost ram to 12gb with a stick of 8gb ddr4 ram sodimm ($20)

if you wanted double the performance for a little more than double the price then the i5-8500T above is a great option, but it's worth noting it's:
              - actively cooled
              - triple the energy consumption
              - slightly older cpu, 8th gen vs 9.5 gen, not a big deal though, either is great for video work

i5-8500T is a great chip, 6 cores, so if you're running proxmox or a desktop and want the extra processing it's a decent option

spend a little more and i'd go the ryzen aliexpress mini pc route to double to power again for a little more dosh

              • +2

@desync: Whoa Thanks! Someone did a good review here : https://goughlui.com/2024/10/01/review-dell-wyse-5070-thin-c…

              • @desync: i got a 10500T for $220 … should I sell it and get a few of these?

                • +1

@uccoffee: 10500T is really good, especially for $220, I'd keep it, more power than 3x wyse j5005 cpus but with more efficiency

if you want multiple servers then just use virtualise them on the 10500T with proxmox

              • @desync: Hi, quick question. Would a machine like this be good enough to run Parsec in my living room and stream games from my bedroom PC to my living room tv?
                Thanks ❤️

  • Hi All. I need to use a software that has the following requirements and I was wondering if the Acer Veriton N4640G Mini would meet my requirement and I can just add the video card separately? If not, please provide me suggestion on how I can make use of a Refurb PC deal? Sorry I am not very savvy when it comes to PCs. Cheers.

OS: Windows 10 64bit, MacOS 10.12 and older
    CPU: Intel Core i5
    RAM: 8 Gb
Video Card: dedicated Nvidia card, 2 Gb Ram

    • +2

if you want a dedicated video card then mini pc's are not the way to go for a beginner. The same company had some deals earlier that are better:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/872560

Of these, this is cheap and ok imho.
      https://metrocom.com.au/shop/computers-tablets-networking/de…

Bear in mind that these will only take a low profile video card.
Also, as you need windows 10, you are likely to need windows 11 in 1 year so you want to get at least an i5-8400.

      • Thank you so much. So basically I can buy the above HP PRODESK 600 G4 and add the video card separately? If so, is it very easy to do so by removing the cover? Is there specific graphics cards for this PC or any should fit? Thank you again 🙏

  • I love these SFF PCs. got a HP ProDesk 600 G3 SFF w/6700 for sale with 16gb ram for $200 delivered, HMU if interested.

For those that need to know- Here's a matrix of what Lenovo Tiny's support discrete GPU's:

    https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/lenovo-thi…

    TL;DR

    PCIe x8 Gen 3

    M720q / M920q / M920x / M90q / M90q Gen 2
    P330 / P340 / P350

    PCIe x8 Gen 4

    M90q Gen 3
    P360

"You can install most x1/x2/x4/x8/x16 PCIe cards as long as they are half height and shorter than 150mm (M720q and M920q) or 167mm (M90q and later), but bear in mind there is no direct airflow around the card and little space, so avoid anything too hot."

    "Riser cards.
Remember the slot is really PCIe x8. Make sure you use the correct riser for your Tiny model; if you don't, powering on will fry the motherboard."
