from the spec this is a steal

    • +1

Have one, can confirm it's a steal.
SoC is getting on a bit, but with 12GB RAM and 256GB included storage, I personally can't complain.
Provided you don't mind staying on android 14, and it only has 2 years of security updates remaining.
The lack of eSIM is a bit of a bugger, but not a deal breaker for me.

      • +1

Are you saying 12gb is enough in 2024?

What the heck are people doing on the phones these days… 300 tabs open (…with AWS Console) and editing photos on Photoshop while running Android Auto and a Geekbench throttle test and playing PubG all at the same time?

Edit: more the merrier I suppose but why not 32gb or 64gb at this point.

        • +1

Playing games on the phone. The number of times my devices have logged off or shut down randomly due to "insufficient RAM" is so frustrating

        • +1

What the heck are people doing on the phones these days

          This is what he said:

SoC is getting on a bit, but with 12GB RAM and 256GB included storage, I personally can't complain.

I think he means the Snapdragon 695 is a recycled design that has gone through multiple iterations.

They are very common in lower mid range and higher end budget smartphones.

If you look at the cores used, they generally consist of 2 a78 performance cores and 6 a55 efficiency cores.

The only thing that has changed over time is the process node used to manufacture them. The core configuration has remained unchanged across all revisions.

There is nothing wrong with it if it works, but Qualcomm has consistently released processors under a new name to make people think it is a brand new product when in reality, it is only a slightly tweaked version of their previous 2 a78, 6 a55 processor.

I think the newest one is the 6s gen 3. Still has 2 a78s and 6 a55s, manufactured on 6nm TSMC.

The 6s gen 3 is being used in Motorola's G85 as well.

        • With AI starting to appear on phones more you will need a lot of ram in order to keep the processing on the phone otherwise it has to contact some AI service in the cloud which people would prefer not to happen due to privacy reasons.

      • Oh bugger, lack of eSim is an absolute deal breaker for me. But at this price and specs I'd just use this as my daily driver and use my old Samsung for eSim when travelling.

    • -2

      It has been cheaper..

      • +6

Pack up, guys, nothing to see here. We all thought this was an excellent price. Guess we were wrong.

        • -5

I still would recommend this phone at this price, but the comments needed balance after the first few comments implied that this was an amazing bargain. It is not a bargain, it is just the going price for this device that is already a year old, and is basically just a refresh of the G82 which was released 2 years ago

      • I think the cheapest in recent past was $250 at big w when I bought 2 as gifts and just paid $280 now (still a good price) for this deal after missing out on the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/865462

    • +2

Nope, can be better. See comments below.

G82, which is essentially the same phone, was recently nearly $200.

Also the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion, which is better in every way, was $300 yesterday.

This might feel like a "steal" you'd be cutting yourself short by buying this IMO.

      • what would you be getting at this price instead?

        • -1

I don't know, but coping for now.

        • I'd have taken the $200 G82 over this for $280. Or to save further, the G54 has been $149-$170ish with the only significant difference being the OLED display

          • +1

@scottySK: G54 is better value unles you need four performance. Had one and really rate it for the price.

      • +2

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion, which is better in every way, was $300 yesterday.

Except for 4GB less RAM, half the storage, smaller battery, no headphone jack, etc. It's probably a better phone, but it's not "better in every way" and most people won't notice the performance boost of the 888+ over the 695.

        • +1

Ah ok I didn't see the full specs.

8gb ram is enough IMO. Personally would prefer the performance boost.

I guess phone is arguably better than the Moto Edge 30 Fusion then.

      • The Edge 30 Fusion has 8GB RAM whereas the G84 has 12GB. What makes the Fusion better? Genuine question.

        • +2

Yeah I didn't see that ram part.

Personally I think 8gb ram is more than enough for anyone, and the performance boost trumps ram - rather have a faster phone.

But see the comment above. This phone is arguably better than the Moto Edge Fusion 30, I'm correcting myself

  • +1

    Micro SD card?
    IP rating?

    So tempted!

  • +4

Amazing phone for the price. Shame about the crappy camera

    • +1

Past comments have said to install a different camera app to get better photos but I think they look fine

  • +2

This phone is better in every way than my pixel 8a beside the camera.

    • +1

      "better in every way".

I mean not really but ok.

The pixel is massively faster. It can record 4k video. It's screen brightness iswaaaay higher. It has newer Bluetooth. It's waterproof. It has security updates till 2031, as opposed to 2026 (5 years more usability). Pixel will also give you android updates till 2031. The g84 stops at version 14.

      • I was looking at this Motorola and the screen on this Motorola isn't as good as the pixel. It's great for a ~$300 phone. But trade off needed to be made to reach these lower prices. Reminds me of older flagship oled from ten years ago. Can't really compare the pixel against these cheaper Motorola. I'm glad Motorola are improving their support on their cheaper models. When you start to factor in support, screen quality, and camera the savings might not be worth it. Especially if you are willing to wait for a great sale. The camera is the one thing that surprised me the most about this Motorola, I reckon my old Lumia from mid 2010s was still better.

        • +2

Yep. Love Motorolas. Total value for money and a nice clean os. Not to mention shakey torch. Just great phones and excellent (market leading) value for money. If I was needing a cheap phone would snap one up for sure.

      • Massively dearer too.

  • +2

If you compare specs, youd notice not much has changed from Motorola G82 which was launched in 2022 iirc?
Recently on sale here for $194 > https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/865452

    Same CPU-GPU on both.

My point is, Motorola seems to rehash a phone with new coat of paint and sell as a "new model", new higher price point ?
Lazy? Good marketing ? No one notices ?

    • +4

You may be right, but compare its price to other competiting phones.

Not everybody is looking for the best phone, many of us (especially is here on Ozb) or simply looking for the best deal

      • Ahh dont get me wrong, I'm here for same reason.
I'm currently still using the G82 from 2022but cant see the point in upgrading to G84 or even to newer recently released G85.
All seems the same same to me.
Bit dissappointed that Motorola chose to go down this nonsensical rehash path.

        • +1

Yeah probably not worthwhile upgrading from G82 to G84.

I guess it's a better fit for people who are actually overdue for a newer phone.

        • The problem is that noticeable hardware improvement has slowed - kind of like PC's. Now that everything is "good enough" and "fast enough" there's not a huge need to upgrade every year to get better specs. That's a problem for manufacturers (especially budget ones) because people don't want to buy a phone from 2022 - even if it has similar specs to a newer phone, so manufacturers bring out a new model just so buyers can purchase the "new" model.

          • @macrocephalic: It's a great thing that hardware can last a long time now. That's why I like phones with longer support life. The only thing that has killed my old Android devices is their software support life. Motorola provide a short support cycle so they can get you to upgrade the hardware sooner, even if the hardware is similar to previous generations.

    • +1

Yeah it is simply "lazy" or "smart" depending on how you look at it.

Basically the same phone, and $200 is better than $300.

Also we have had that Motorola Edge 30 Fusion deal yesterday for $300, and that is better at everything than this phone.

This doesn't feel like a good deal anymore. It might be ok but I will hodl

      • Just compared the two and they are a little different. Same SoC but better performance in the G84. More storage and faster storage speed. Longer support life. Despite similar specs, newer camera system (still crap). Double the ram. Better speakers and better audio output from the headphone jack. Worse battery life in the G84 though.

I'd personally just buy a pixel for around $500 when they are on sale. Like I did with the 7. The camera and software support on these Motorola's are too poor for me..

  • +2

It has been available for less recently… Wasn't everyone saying this would get to $200?

  • Would this be a good phone for an elderly non tech person? Or are there any alternatives?

My mum is currently using my Galaxy S7 but that will soon be useless with 3G being closed down.

The physical home button is intuitive for her.. But all new phones don't seem to have hat button anymore.

    • There are new version of some classic nokia phones available such as the Nokia 2660 Flip, but they really only have a very simple camera, calling, and SMS as its not standard android.

Otherwise there hasn't been a mainstream phone with a home button and touch screen released to the market in some time. Depending on her age, it might be best to step back to something more simple as above, or help her through the learning curve of something newer (like this phone).

      • Thank you.

She uses her current phone for YouTube as well. She hasn't really worked out how to go back and forward on pages so used the home button alot.

But I guess I'll have to keep teaching her lol.

        • She uses her current phone for YouTube as well. She hasn't really worked out how to go back and forward on pages so used the home button alot.

          Sounds like an apple user.

    • The s7 isn't that old. I know the s6 has 4g, so s7 probably does too..

I dont think its on by default for new phones, but you can still set it so that there is always a home button on screen

This will be an upgrade if you feel like buying a new phone though

      • +1

I'm getting emails, letters and texts from my telco saying that her S7 is not supported and won't be able to make emergency calls once 3G stops.

I googled and apparently even if your phone is 4G capable it still may not function properly Ie. Make calls/emergency calls once 3G is disabled.

        • It's possible they get it wrong, I've got a 1 year old s23 Ultra and got emails about my phone only supporting 3g.

I even got a voucher for this deal, to supplement my upgrade from 3g

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852504

Good phones are so cheap nowadays, so don't let me stop you from buying her a new phone

        • +1

I think what they want is a phone that can do VoLTE.

    • S7 is a 4g phone though, not 3g

  • +1

If you need a phone now this is one of the best options at this price. Else an update of this phone should be out very soon, presumably G86. No information on specs but should at least have an updated chipset. And hopefully eSIM.

  • Does this support dual app? Anyone can advise. Thanks

    • +2

      What's that

      • I think the feature he's talking about is being able to install the same app twice (and using two different profiles). It's useful for things like the 7eleven app so you can lock in fuel twice, or have both your own and your partners app profiles installed without having to logout and login again.

        • Ah nice, thank you

7eleven app so you can lock in fuel twice

This fuel lock doesn't work anymore rip

          • @smartProverble: The fuel lock still works but it's limited to 25c/L. Fuel is always expensive near me but cheap near work so I lock it in for my wife's car.

        • That correct. I always had a few dual app on my Redmi note 9 pro, which will obselete soon due to 3g.

I had Macca's dual app and some other productivity apps for works.

Thinking of either getting this one, or a newer Redmi note pro

    • Yes, via secure folder. It works very well in my experience (haven't used Samsung's version though to compare).

  • Camera lagging to the point of unusable for me. Brought it in for warranty and they didn't fix it because they say they can't replicate the problem. Placed it on my table one day and the screen just cracked….. Camera lag not fixed, phone screen cracked no longer covered under warranty. Haven't even have the phone for 1yr yet….

    • Install GCam mod

      • Can that fix cracked screens on all phones or just this one?

        /s

        • Give it a try and let us know

      • Thanks will give this a try 🤞

  • +1

The best thing about this phone is the great battery life.

  • -1

I wonder if this phone is the most posted bargain ever on this site… I'm trying to think of another. Great 2nd phone that your misses doesn't know about..🤪

    • +1

      You weren't here for eneloops?

  • I have this phone and the specs and design are nice for the price but the Ram management is terrible, apps keep closing on the background and refreshing, It makes me wonder what the use of having 12GB of Rams and also the battery life not that great if you play games despite the 5000mAh battery and that is due to the snapdragon chip used in this phone but for a light user can last 2 days easy.

  • Would it not be cheaper to buy through Everyday Market from BigW with 10% off and 28% cashback from shopback?

    • It seems to be sold out.

  • -1

    Link says $297.99, not 279.99.

    • Use eBay code 'SAVETHG'

  • I recently bought one. Battery life is very good, camera is very ordinary.

Call quality is very poor where I live. Appears to be related to the signal sensitivity because 4-yo and 7-yo Galaxy S phones are crystal clear in same location on same 4G network. Retailer said I can't expect call quality to be as good as on a premium phone like Galaxy S series. Anyone else have this issue/experience?

    • No issues with mine. G54 and G84.
      Try disabling Voice over WiFi

  • +1
  • How does this compare against Redmi 12C/ 13, Samsung A15/35, Motorola G14?

  • Still the best
