Motorola Moto G54 5G - Midnight Blue 8GB RAM/128GB Storage $29 with an Eligible Plan (Minimum $30 Plan) Delivered @ amaysim

1810

I got an email with a code for an extra $150 off their EOFY deals, which includes the Motorola Moto G54 5G.

The code reduces the cost of the device to $29.00 however you need to add a plan (cheapest is $30 plan) bringing the total to a measly $59.00.

There could be some good deals on other phones but this one is likely to be the best.

I've flagged the deal as Targeted as I'm not sure if it is or not but better to be on the safe side. If the code turns out to be generic then I can update the post with the coupon.

Edit
I'm guessing I've been targeted because they think I'm still using a 3G device, hence the email I received refers to upgrading to a 4G/5G handset and that's what the additional credit is for.

  • Interesting, couple of family members are using amaysim. Will have a look

  • +1

    Wow

  • +4

Nothing in my email. Would be very keen otherwise

  • How do you know if the code is generic or not ? Maybe I can try ?

  • Good for those still on a 4G phone which still uses 3G for calling with 3G going offline across Australia soon.

  • -2

Yeah i got the same email. I really dislike the lying by them, the text is:

The 3G device you're using relies on the 3G network that we're switching off in September. Upgrade now to get an extra $150 off our range of discounted or full priced phones. It's your call.

It's really lying to people, saying that they HAVE to upgrade their device as it "relies" on 3g which is absolute BS. Scummy email aimed and tricking grandad and grandma into an unnecessary purchase.

    • +2

How is it a lie? If their device relies on 3G for calls, they have to upgrade their device to continue using the service after 3G is closed.

      • If their device relies on 3G for calls

That's how. They are sending it to people well beyond that cohort, as evidenced by other commenters and myself.

        • what phone do you have?

    • +3

I get similar recorded message with Belong Mobile before every freakin call and I've got phone with VoLTE. It's very annoying.

      • +4

You may already know this, but some phones that have VoLTE support don't specifically support the 700 MHz, band 28 that is required for Telstra 4G voice calls.

One of my family's old phones supports 4G, but only six of the seven bands used in Australia. It doesn't support the critical B28. When I tested it, I got the Belong Mobile warning message.

There are various ways of checking what frequencies a phone supports, but one of the easiest is to look up the phone model on https://kimovil.com

For example, here's the link for the Motorola G54. https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-motorola-moto-g54#:~…

Scroll down to the Kimovil Frequency Checker, Network compatibility section where you can see which bands the phone supports. Make sure to select "Australia" if the country is not automatically selected.

        • +3

Thanks, my Xiaomi Mi 9T has Band 28.

          • +1

@WatchNerd: The 9T is a great phone! Hard to find a replacement. Especially with the poop up camera!

        • +3

I doubt anyone on OzB ever bought a phone without Band 28 since that was the first question asked for several YEARS when cheap Xiaomis and the like were posted.

          • +1

@Iggemo: Definitely were a few defiant people who bought them anyway

          • +1

@Iggemo: Loads of us bought b28-less xiaomis when the redmi note 3 pro was a thing (2017). IIRC Neither Voda nor Optus were using b28 at the time (in the city anyway) which meant that it wasnt inportant to have it if you werent on telstra.

Of course this was in 2017 and there wouldnt be many of them left.

          • @Iggemo: Had one for 4 years. Worked fine. Redmi Note 4 Plus and Mi 5s plus. Those were the days.

        • Thanks, got the texts from Optus to replace my Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro (2019), but the Kimovil site says my phone has band 28a (700) for the 4G network. I assume I should be ok not replacing it. It performs fine for me anyway.

          • @Herbs: I have the same phone and received the messages but no offer received.

        • Band 28 isn't actually required for 4g voice, you'll just run the risk of poor reception. I know because it's currently working on my B28 free phone, and Boost's message to me said essentially that:

These are 4G devices with Limited Band Support – this means that while you may be able to continue using them when the Telstra 3G network closes, you’ll have reduced and intermittent network coverage depending on your location. You’ll need to upgrade for the best coverage to a device that is LTE 700MHz/Band 28 capable.

But more generally there's also the risk of VoLTE incompatibility, either because the phone is old, or incompatibility between the phone and the network (mostly seems to affect Telstra and not Optus or Vodafone).

          • @scix: Yep, it'll depend on the areas you use your phone in and the mobile tower capabilities. When I disabled 3G on the old phone, voice calls failed in most of the areas I tried. YMMV.

If anyone wants to test their phone in an area, you might be able to disable 3G in your Android settings. Or you can try the hidden Test settings. Dial *#*#4636#*#*, select "Phone information" and change the "Preferred network type". You'll need to know the various network types (e.g. 3G - GSM, CDMA; 4G - LTE; 5G - NR). Then try dialling out from the phone, and calling the phone from another phone.

No guarantee that secret-settings number will work on all phones. I remember reading some manufacturers use a different number. Also, write down what your current network-type setting is if you want to switch back to it. General disclaimer: Don't do any of this if you have no idea what you're doing, and don't blame me if things go sideways :)

      • I had the same issue with ALDI Mobile with my Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite NE, had to shell out the $5 for a new SIM. I could use the webpage to do a SIM swap and it was quite instant actually. It kept my number & plan & data rollover all the same. I'm just happy the stupid message is not there anymore. So freaking annoying….

Edit: I already disabled carrier detect a few weeks ago, usually this is done with a code entered in the dialer like you are making a call

Note may be different for different phones
        ##86583## (VoLTE)
        ##869434## (VoWiFi)
Urgh formatting is being screwed up it's star pound star pound [numbers] pound star pound star

They need to fix this, so many perfectly fine phones are going to go to landfill, but I doubt they will 😔

Am on Amaysim eSIM (on G54) - expect thats why I didn't receive email / reminder to upgrade from 3G😉

      • As an INFIDEL shouldn't you be used to being treated like a 2nd class citizen by now!? 😅 lolz
        /joke

        • Infidel = non-believer
          So I don't believe that😂

          Better than a Wally - a silly or inept person🤣 lolz /joke
No fries / Frites on you😉

          • @INFIDEL: Let us know how smooth swapping eSim process works .. when next you travel to the lands of the Djinn 😏

            • @Wally: Rather be Travelling… in Belgium for those Frites🍟 we've discussed😉

              G54 takes nanoSIM & eSIM!
Plenty of choice for a traveller🚢

eSIM is very easier to buy online & install anywhere! Some have discussed buying here & sending code that installs the eSIM - in message to friends overseas.

              • @INFIDEL: i presumed that was why you purchased a budget G54 .. to use on your travels

  • It's pretty much $120 off ($150 off code minus $30 early renewal) for all phones, some Optus branded are free after the code.

  • Nice! Mum and Dad might have codes for this.

    • Same codes?

      • +1

Dunno… I only said they might have codes. Haven’t checked yet.

      • It looks pretty unique man…

        • +3

Just as well, mum and dad didn't get any codes.

Amaysim's loss… they would have purchased two Samsung A55's to replace their Nokia 8.3's.

  • +2

dang, I just pulled the trigger on G84 few days ago $249, at $59 for G54 it's hard to decide

    • G54 at $59 is immensely better value.

    • Still waiting for the G84 I ordered for the missus to arrive, but for $59 why not get a G54 too as a backup phone. Just need to remember to cancel the plan :)
(For me, I'm going to need another one for the kids in the new year anyway)

Tried my luck with cashback too, tracked but assume it will be rejected because to the code. (Cashrewards and Shopback both have the Motorola/SIM bundle listed for $6.50, Topcashback only has plans listed)

  • checked my spam folder but noting.. im amaysim customer and want this

    • +2

I am a customer too, already on a 30$ plan lol. Still got the code.
Thus, this is 29$ for me Haha. I might as well renew it for the next month

Edit - did an early renewal for 30$ and it worked. 29$ spare phone, we rockin!!!

      • Just want to know - if you did an early renew, does it queue up the plan, or immediately start the new plan, thus losing your existing plan's validity period?

        • For me, it immediately started the new plan. I had 5 days left. not sure if you might get the pro rata credit back in future.

      • how does it work for existing customer, I have spare PAYG with them, if I sign-up for the $30 plan then that goes for month only? after that month, does my plan revert back to PAYG or I need to change something?

  • +1

    is the code generic?

    • I would assume not

  • -2

So what do you guys think? JB wicked wed sale with G54 at $99? $49 with trade in coupon?

    • This coming Wednesday?

    • Last one was only 5% off phones for memory

      • +1

And the one before that reduced the g54 to $149

        • +1

Plus JB already have it on sale for $199.00 ($100 off) so i doubt they will have extra discount on it

  • Nothing in my mailbox either. Looks like everywhere start slashing price on G54, hope we will see this goes below $150 RRP

  • -4

if only i could load ios on it so I wouldn't need to sign my father up for university to use it

    • If you can't teach him Android in a few minutes it's probably easier to just throw your money away and buy an Apple.

      • -1

i cant teach him ios properly without a domestic incident, I'm not going to attempt to tach him android as ill be removed from the will

  • Wow

  • Amaysim - I would have to go outside to make a call in this suburb of perth . I have a reasonable nbn + mobile package via Mate for years now . Definitively not gaming speeds as fttn limited . Also an ozbargain discounted Boost , very good reception , backup sim and awaiting my ozbargain cheap 12gb g54 .

  • +2

Maybe there's a way to trigger/trick your amaysim service that you need to upgrade too by putting your sim in a 3G phone. I get an annoying preamble at the start of all my calls telling me about the 3G shut-down.

    • Giving that a try😉

    • In the settings (for Android at least) you should have the option to use 3G (search settings for Preferred network type). Might do the trick.

  • +3

Interesting that this budget phone has the same amount of RAM (8GB) as the Macbook air on special at $1349, and half the amount of flash storage (128 vs 256GB)

  • Woah… Just bought g54…. Would need to unlock in my case but still very cheap…. Guessing staff may be able to give out codes.

    • Are these phones actually locked?

      • no

  • +2

Thank you OP. I ignored the email, thought that it is a general spam from Amaysim.

    • +1

me too lol.. i deleted it right away

now i ended up getting the phone and helpfully my wife's 12 month sim plan expires in 2 weeks so she can use this for at least month at that point, they helpfully come with international calls and SMS included

      • +1

haha same, deleted the email and my mums plan expires in 9 days (annual) so this was perfect timing! ozbargain wins again

    • same here - cheers to OP

i actually had a 5G phone but still got the text on Sunday that my phone is 3G then got the coupon email today for upgrade after which I just ignored as promotions - did had a quick look the phones available looked expensive or worthless

cashback of $6.50 tracked as well - hopefully it will be automatically approved

  • +1

I got this email. Think I should get one before it gets OzBargained

  • I had a spare sim sitting in an old phone but wasn’t 3g and got a code.

    • Kinda in the same boat. If it is not one of the officially recognised phones by Amaysim. i.e. of the Big4 - Apple, Samsung, Pixel, Motos/Opps then Amaysim considers you to be on an "unsupported" phone.

      • It was a Nokia 2.3.

  • +1

    Samsung A55 for $279. Steal

    • -3

      from ?

  • +1

I didn’t get any emails from Amaysim

  • +2

I received a code maybe because I still use an old Sony Xperia XA. The code will work on any of their phone deals - e.g. can get Pixel 8 for $599 or Samsung A55 for $249. Good time to upgrade.

  • g54 is already discounted $100, any one code can be used.

    • Code MG54DSCNTMAR2024 (autofilled when click Deal link) reduces price from $279 only to $179.

Use Targeted code - reduces price to $29!!
      Then add plan for both.

      • +4

Strange that pointing out that is NOT the code to use in this Deal - keeps getting negged!
Replace that auto-filled code with code from targeted email!

  • This is the code for $100 off MG54DSCNTMAR2024
You can't add another code on top of it. You need the link from the email.

    • +5

you need to replace that code with the one from the email

      • ok, thanks

      • Can you tell us the format of the code in email so we can try variations of it

        • +2

          3GLGBTQIA

          *bold characters are randomised

        • have you worked out any?

  • Is this locked to Amaysim? Can you downgrade your plan without penalties?

    • +3

      after one month, yes.

      • +1

Thanks. I picked up the Samsung A55 for $270. Seems like good value.

    • +1

      The phone is unlocked

  • Are the codes really transferrable?? Surprising if true.

  • Don't brother with the chat.
This offer is only available for 3g mobile users.

    • +1

not true. I have been on a 4g plan all along and still got it

  • How do i find the details of the actual plan im signing up for? does it have international calls, when does it need to be activated etc? Cos it' smaking me choose a phone number at checkout rather than letting me deal with that later for some reason.
