Motorola Moto G54 5G - Midnight Blue 8GB RAM/128GB Storage $29 with an Eligible Plan (Minimum $30 Plan) Delivered @ amaysim

1810

I got an email with a code for an extra $150 off their EOFY deals, which includes the Motorola Moto G54 5G.

The code reduces the cost of the device to $29.00 however you need to add a plan (cheapest is $30 plan) bringing the total to a measly $59.00.

There could be some good deals on other phones but this one is likely to be the best.

I've flagged the deal as Targeted as I'm not sure if it is or not but better to be on the safe side. If the code turns out to be generic then I can update the post with the coupon.

Edit
I'm guessing I've been targeted because they think I'm still using a 3G device, hence the email I received refers to upgrading to a 4G/5G handset and that's what the additional credit is for.

@Mugsy: The A55 is for my dad, to replace his centuries old moto. Still going but 3g only. If the sammy holds up as long as the moto, i'll be surprised!! Testament to moto reliabilityđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

              • +1

@vinnycol: I can't comment on how long Samsungs generally last for. I got my first one (an S23U) during the xmas sales last year. Wife got a Fold 5… both our first Samsungs.

The promised 4yrs of security updates or what ever it is is the best benefit IMHO assuming the hardware lasts as well. This is one of the reasons I want to migrate Dad to the A55… he and mum have been doing lots of international travel over the past 1.5yrs but international roaming on Amaysim has been mostly miss. I think a phone with more regular uipdates and also an esim is essential.

The moto g54 has a lens coating issue overseas (most of the posts from India)… not sure if any of that stock made it to Australia. But to be on the safe side, I think the A55 is a better purchase if you want the device to just work and not potentially cause headaches.

Also note that the A55 has flat aluminium sides I believe… might feel uncomfortable to hold so a nice case with curved sides might be a good idea for your dad.

The free case that comes with the G54 I find to have flat sides that results in edges that aren't comfy to hold. OK if it's a back up phone but if it was my main phone, I'd get a new case immediately.

                  @Mugsy: From GSMArena

Motorola Moto G54 for India is a different model

The India variant is called Motorola G54 Power
                  Key differences:

                  • 6000 mAh Batter in lieu of 5000 mAh
                  • 8.9 mm width in lieu of 8.1 mm to make space for the larger capacity battery
                  • Camera Module 50MP + 8MP Ultrawide in lieu of 50MP + 2MP Macro

As you mentioned, quite possible that there mah be a lens issue if many people have reported. However, the lens module in Moto G54 Australia/International version is different as mentioned above.

                  • +1

@djoz: Yeah, i am hoping the issues are only with the Power version. But so many online comments about the lens coating issue refer to the G54 only that it's hard to distinguish whether they are the normal G54 or the Power version.

But i have yet to find an Australian post about the lens coating issue.

                    • +1

@Mugsy: Yeah, hoping for the same. The phone is quite good otherwise for the price-point. Hell-yeah actually way too good for the price-point in this deal.

Was wondering - do we get a back cover/case with this phone in Aus?
                      Maybe @INFIDEL can asnwer.

                      • +2

@djoz: G54 comes with a generic clear silicone case… I previously bought a G54 from Big W some months ago so can confirm this.

If it had a screen protector, it would have been a complete package for me.

Ended up getting a cheap, tempered glass protector before passing the phone to Dad… note that the bundled case does press on the glass screen protector I got, lifting it up at the sides a bit and letting air in which is annoying. A plastic film protector would avoid this issue I think.

@Mugsy: I've still got an S10+ which is still going strong albeit battery life isn't great anymore, not that it was amazing when new!
Mixed reviews on the A55 but generally seems good, and apart from wireless charging, has all the features one would need. His motoG has done well for 9-10 years so about time for an upgrade…

              • @vinnycol: Put an amaysim sim in the 3g phone between now and sep shut off, they'll Likely do another deal again just before shutoff

  • Many thanks, bought one and port another number to amaysim.
How long can we delay the activation of the new SIM card? If anyone has experience.

    • Check the expiry date on the back of the pack. I still have a few packs from this offer https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663347 with expiry dates through to 03/2025.

      • Thanks. That makes sense.

      • Do these still have to be activated under the same name used while buying? i.e. is it needed that the number being ported over has to be in my name?

        • I think it needs to be the same name. Not sure if yu can create a new account under the name you need to port over, the code might work, but I wouldn’t know for sure.

  • "For new numbers, the SIM comes pre-activated so the plan will be activated while the SIM is in transit. But no worries, once you start using the SIM/service within 15 days from the activation, the plan will automatically restart so you will still be able to use the plan for the full 28 days."

  • Since it's out of stock, do you think if Amaysim will honour all the orders placed? From last year's iPhone 12 mini deal, it seems no one got order cancelled.

    • +2

I don't think you can add it to cart so there will be no order to cancel (oh, if you mean existing orders I don't see why not).

The discounted price @ $179 runs until 30/6 though (voucher valid to 31/7) so I'd keep checking on it. Might come back in stock before then.

      • +1

        hoping the same.

  • +2

I am not sure how they are picking people that got the voucher, but I missed out it seems.

    I only received this email:

    Hi Jonathan,

We believe you’re an amaysim customer that still uses the Optus 3G network with your mobile number 04XXXXXXXX.

The 3G network is being shut down in September 2024. Once this happens, you will not be able to use your phone as you do today. Your ability to stay connected and make calls will be affected unless you upgrade to a device that has a technology called VoLTE, and is compatible with a 4G or 5G* network.

Please check your device specifications to confirm you will need to upgrade.

*5G dependent on selected plan, location and device.

That email was sent to me just over a week ago.

Would anyone have a code they will not be using. In case they get more stock in. My Samsung A20 is just about cooked. Would very much appreciate it

  • -5

Can someone please DM me the code, if they have spare. The code request megathread already seems to be closed. I am looking to buy an A55 for 279.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help !

  • +1

    Just received my Moto!!

    • Did you get shipping/tracking details from amaysim? When was it shipped?

      • +1

@TomGum, I would like to know the same ie. if you get shipping info before u received your unit. Also I order mine on Friday so just wondering when did u order yours?

        Thx

        • Yes, shipping info (Startrack/Auspost for me) is provided once it's shipped.

        • +1

The order email says they'll send the tracking number once it ships. I also ordered Friday but still no shipping notification, only logging in to Amaysim it says my new SIM has been sent.

Looks like I spoke too soon as I just got an Auspost notification of a new StarTrack parcel being added.

      • I got my shipping details once it was shipped.

    • I got a StarTrack added to my AusPost list too. Not sure if that’s Moto

      • +1

        Pretty sure it is.

  • Received a notification from aus post, hoping it is the new phone. I still think this post should be re named to the $150 off not only for the moto. I bought the Samsung which is used as a main phone.

  • Holy shit! Even with existing numbers they activate it before you even get the SIM, i just got an SMS saying my number is now being ported when i never wanted that, they are gonna stinge me out of my current plan with another provider.. WTF !!!

    • Huh? But as far as I know, a confirmation code/SMS is needed for the port to start. How did the porting start without your consent via code/SMS reply?

      • +1

I dont know but it did. at 10.04 i got an SMS saying porting is underway, and can take from 3 hours to 3 days. You will receive an email when the porting process is complete.

I immediately phoned up Amaysim and said WTF i dont even have the SIM, i never activated anything, WTF is this. The customer service rep said she has "withdrawn the port request" so im not sure if it was just an errant SMS message that came with the tax invoice for the purchase, or if they genuinely were about to port me out of my existing plan. Either way people might need to keep an eye out for this both now and in future when it comes to Amaysim !

        • +1

If the same SMS provides details of Tax Invoice and Porting as well, then mostly it is not the official porting message. A porting message would need you to reply to confirm, or enter a code on a screen where you are mid-way porting.

I've got this phone delivered from Amaysim. It looks like the system update is locked to Optus software channel. It is still on Andriod 13 and cannot get 14. Security update stops at Jan. 2024.

    • +1

Any ideas about the unlock fee?

      • +1

more thinking it is ROM locked. Per previous experience with Oppo phone, we may need to take it to after sales to flash a retail rom

  • I m oversea but phone just show without tracking from austpost . Put work place mate as recipient . Got it but not test. Was thinking to leave the new number until I need it, from above comment it seem is force activated.

  • +1

I got a new email, looks like they might still be giving out codes.

“ The 3G device you're using relies on the 3G network that we're switching off in September. Upgrade now to get an extra $150 off our range of discounted or full priced iPhones. It’s your call.”

Does anyone know how quickly they restock their phones? I would love a G54

  • +1

I got my code via email about 1 hr ago (in law still using iphone 3GS, amazing battery still alive !!!), i m sure they will give code to all their customers, but damn all G54 gone OOS and ozbargained !!!

    • Could you tell what does the code offer? Usually the emails mention the price of the phones.
What phones are mentioned in the email, and at what price points?

      • They said $150 off range of EOFY deals OR $150 off any iPhone”
        Email mentioned iPhone 11, 12, 15 and 15 plus
        e.g iPhone 11: $679 -> $429

        • +1

^This. Basically just take $150 off from whatever phones they have there

        • +1

Nice, iPhone 11 at $429 is a pretty good deal. But I know the phone is now too old to be bought even at this price point.
Did you try applying the coupon to any other devices? If it is just taking off additional $150, it is quite good in my opinion.

          • @djoz: Nah, even after discount, still too exy for any iPhones, just used code and bought A55 for $279, man don't think anywhere in this universe can you buy A55 at this price !!!

  • Received phone and sim card today in Mel, thanks OP

    • Did you ever get tracking details from courier before receiving it?

      • No, nothing, just turned up by a delivery guy.

        • ok thx, thats a pretty sh|ty delivery process …

  • +1

    I still didn’t receive the email…

  • -5

i bought the A55 5G (SM-A556E model), without opening it, it is hard to tell if it has:
    1x NanoSIM + 1x eSIM + 1 SD cards slot dedicated
    or
    1 NanoSIM/SD card slot + 1xeSIM (ie shared slot)

i googled a bit too, no black n white or authoritative answer.
could someone using this model confirm?

    thx!

    • Why not just open it and find out for yourself? Or are you trying to sell it for a profit and need this in the description to avoid a return if you listed the wrong info.

      • -3

        yep you're right,
Granted most people are here to save a buck or 2, I'm just crystalizing that saving.
BTW i just got a bit more about this phone from Samsung Australia, they were quite helpful.

  • Oh Auspost, how you like to toy with me…

Yesterday I get a tracking notification that says ETA is next day (unusual for WA, even with StarTrack).
Check this morning and it says ETA is now tomorrow. Next thing I know it's out for delivery and in my hands.

Got it before the G84 even…

  • Ordered last Friday, received today, haven't opened

Got my moto. The android software update channel shows optus and there is no android 14 upgrade available.

    • Any confirmation if the phone is locked to the carrier (Optus) or is network-unlocked?

      • 180+ up votes for a locked phone would be extremely rare.

      • Is the phone locked?
iPhone, Samsung and Pixel models are unlocked and can be used with any networks.
However, please note that phones from the following brands are initially locked to the Optus network:
        Oppo
        Optus X
If you ever need to unlock your phone after purchase, we're here to help.

      • No I'm using a Telstra Sim and works. My point is the android software channel shows optus and in that channel the android version is 13. I'm looking a way to change it to a moto official channel so that I can upgrade to android 14

    • +4

When I get the chance I'll try flashing with retail ROM

      • -1

Would this void the 2 year warranty?
I think the 2 years is a great plus, given this price. Imagine at the end of 22 months something goes wrong with the phone. There's a good chance you'd get a replacement and it'd be a much better phone.

As with the Optus Official Channel for Android upgrades, I think its only a matter of time, and it will be available after a few months, if not earlier.

        • +2

Not sure. I mean it's still an official ROM.

Is there any Optus bloat in the Optus ROM?

      • +1

please try and let us know which ROM file to use :)

        • +2

Well, I flashed with latest RETAPAC and it's now on Android 14 with May updates but software channel is still optus, not retapac. Security patch level is at the roms included May 2024 and update check claims its up to date but I don't know how far behind Motorola is with patch updates.

Not sure if RSA will be any different.

          • @bamzero: thanks for the effort

            • @bond008: RSA just wants to downgrade to A13

Interesting about the warranty details it shows though.

The rom it downloads is exactly the same as the RETAPAC on lolinet (which are also the same as the RETAIL roms on there).

So I dont know, guess it's stuck on optus channel for now. ro.carrier is protected, not sure if unlocking the bootloader would help but I wasn't planning on doing that just yet.

              • @bamzero: I think we may need Moto's help to refresh. I refreshed my OPPO with their customer service to get rid of Voda ROM in the past.

                  • @Mugsy: Yeh that's the screenshot RSA screenshot above.

                    • @bamzero: Bugger… was hoping it would solve all issues.

                      • @Mugsy: I mean, I haven't actually tried it so there's a chance but the rom it's installing is the same source albeit earlier version and the same method as doing it manually so I'm expecting it still wont overwrite the ro.carrier

                • +2

@bond008: Moto is a little more user friendly than Oppo though. You can't even unlock the bootloader on an Oppo.

I didn't spend long on it but didn't see any Optus stuff in the rom anyway, seemed pretty stock to me so probably not worth the hassle. Just manually update if you dont want to wait.

              • @bamzero: How did you upgrade, if not from RSA

                • +1

@sicaboy: Fastboot method (which is what RSA is doing behind the scenes anyway)

There is a handy toolkit which will do it automatically here

Just download and extract rom, extract toolkit into the same folder and run through the menu options. Put phone in fastboot mode by holding Volume Down while booting.

You can do a full wipe install or an upgrade (in the rom there is flashfile.xml and servicefile.xml. They contain the instructions for the flash, servicefile wont erase userdata though. The toolkit will handle it though.) Being a new phone I just did a full wipe.

Of course, do so at your own risk :) Motos are pretty forgiving though. On lolinet there is a blankflash rom file that's used to get you out of the s#!t if you brick your phone and majority of the time would do the trick but I can't say I've ever needed it in my time flashing my old G5 and G6 phones. This is the first time I've done it on a Mediatek based one but nothing has changed with the procedure.

  • Wow Amaysim is fast, in Sydney, bought phone yesterday, already delivered just now in less than 1 day !!!

    • Which phone did you get? I can’t decide which phone I should get. Cheers

      • +2

        A55 coz G54 all OOS

        • Does your A55 has Optus ROM as g54 or normal? How is the on display fingerprint? Many ppl complains about not working most of the times.

          • +1

@amitnsw: Sorry haven't open or setup yet, hunting for case + screen protector first. I never will use fingerprint, always just use code to unlock.

            • +2

@kaikor: Curious why you don't use fingerprint?

I like the idea that when I'm in public there's no code or pattern for any onlookers to see.

Though annoying that Android decides every now and again that I need to use my code or pattern "for security" which almost always happens when I'm out at a shopping centre full of people and security cameras everywhere.

              • @bamzero: I mainly use biometrics for this reason. Codes are so much easier to steal by onlookers.

            • +1

@kaikor: Fyi, it comes with a case.

              • @Mugsy: really? all the unboxing video I seen only comes with the cable, since when samsung phones come with a FREE case?

                • @kaikor: Possibly thinking you got the G54?

                  • @bamzero: Ooops, yeah, I thought kaikor got the G54. My bad.

Samsung don't even give the wall charger… definitely no case with the A55.

                    • @Mugsy: Yeah dont mind to also buy G54 too, as both in law's phones need to change for this stupid 3G shutdown. Hope by September closer to deadline, more cheap deals coming.

  • Does this also quality for cash rewards?

    • Is the unique code listed on cash rewards?

    • +1

I used CashRewards anyway while expecting to void due to voucher use but just noticed it's approved already (available a couple of days ago)
      Moto + SIM bundle @ $6.50

      • Wow thats bargain of the universe !!! phone + sim = $6.5 only !!!

      • Approved or tracked?

        • +1

Approved, 5 days after it tracked (about the same time I received the package)
