No OLED at this price is a bummer

    • +2

      At-least it supports eSIM. That's a plus.

      • Description should say nano + eSim instead dual nano.

        • If it's any thing like my TCL 50 Pro 5G smartphone. SIM 1 is dedicated to NANO and SIM 2 is eSIM. When you load up the eSIM it will stick to the SIM 2 slot.

    • +2

Honestly, the high-end LCDs are so good now you'll rarely notice. Except no always-on display.

      • +2

The IPS 120Hz screen on my TCL 50 Pro 5G looks fine and it's only on a mid range phone. But if out in the sunlight it can be hard to read the screen. But i had the same problem with my previous smartphone with an OLED screen.

        • I expect a mid-range phone to have a high-end LCD :-)

        • What model phone was it with OLED screen you mention was not so bright in sun ?

      • If you use a lot in direct sun, OLED wins hands down but LCD has come along way through, depth of colour is probably the main shortfall now

        • +2

Not to mention IPS display are generally safe from PWM flicker which plagues most OLED displays.

      • Yeh I have the G84 and it's blacks are pretty nice compared to older LCD phones. And my previous phone was a Samsung Note so not a comparison in a bubble.

        • G84 has a P-OLED display. This deal's G75 has an IPS LCD. Comparing the G84 display to older LCD doesn't make sense.

    • Well said

    • Keep an eye on G85/Edge-50-Neo. Price dependent & ATL soon-ish…except Neo, lol-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/880891

4300mAh battery Edge-50-Neo: like that users need to apply EV-charging & extend battery-life practices, & cool temp. management to to get 3+ years use. Heavy users are likely to find this IM-practical.

APPs such as AccuBattery: battery-health is a good indicator of degradation. Likely that this # is somewhere in the MID-to-HIGH 80% before users complain that their phone don't last a day use…user-dependent.

  • This or G85 for the same price? I'm leaning towards G85 because of OLED but there may be something I'm missing?

    • +2

All i could find from Sydney Mobiles is the G85 128GB model. Yes that's half the amount of storage compared to this G75 256GB model. Plus the Blue and Green colours look weird in my opinion compared to the G75 model.

    • +3

The G85 screen is curved and this one is flat. Many people avoid curved screens.

This one also has much longer updates compared to the G85 which only has 3.5 years of security remaining and will only get up to Android 15 or 16.

The G85 does not have wireless charging and is not IP68 rated.

It depends on what features you value most.

    • G85 has a curved screen and slightly above half the support window.

    • +3

      G85 2 years OS 3 years security
      G75 5 years OS 6 years security

  • In my opinion the green colour version is the best looking. If i was getting a new smartphone that's the one i'd pick. It's a nice light green colour.

    • Its Vegan leather tho

      • What to expect at this price point.

    • +2

      Colour mattering to you?
You fall in the rare category of 'naked' phone users, and I salute you.
Everyone I know runs a case.

      • +1

The only time I've run without a case was the LG G4 which had a leather back.

  • +1
  • If you don't mind MTK soc the edge 50 NEO ticks all the boxes for about the same price, when on sale

    • Quickly googling, neo 50 is not in the same price range. Also 4300mAh battery for 50 Neo looks a bit small.

    • +2

      NEO would be my pick

    • We got the Neo 5G during the eBay super sale thing. Cracking phone very impressed - the fingerprint scanner was more effective than my S24 Ultra, particularly in the cold where the S24U refused to recognise my fingers (just got back from Japan skiing).

My wife reckons the Neo is the best phone she's had, and she's been through a bunch of different brands. The only thing I notice that's not as good as my flagship are the cameras.

      • 4300mAh battery: pls share your experience.

Do you think it will last 3+ yrs without power bank, current-use & current battery-health practices? Thanks

        https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_edge_50_neo-review-2754p3.…

        • I mean battery is relative to your usage right, so all I know if my wife plays low-energy usage games a lot and watches crap TV on it while cooking etc. She hasn't once complained about battery and charges it once daily.

I would assume one daily charge will last 3 years no problem, and if not I'll replace the battery myself as it's not hard.

Also worth noting they include a super-fast charger in the box with this phone (plus protective case), which I use to charge my S25U as it's the most powerful charger in the house (for some reason my Apple Mac chargers don't force the same juice into the phone).

  • +4

I have one, its 1 nano SIM and esim plus micro SD card slot.

  • Arguably the last mainstream phone with eSim + microSD slot, too bad no FM radio like in earlier Motorola phones.

  • İs this an import? Will it suffer from the silly 3g blanket ban

    • +1

      No it's a local model

    • Even if it did, remember that Telstra/Boost seem to have missed the memo about blocking unknown IMEIs. Or at least forgotten to action it. For now.

  • -1

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Beware of dodgy customer support and warranty from Motorola Australia.

  • +1

5 years of OS updates (up to Android 19) and 6 years of security updates.

According to Motorola that translates into:

Keep up with the latest version of Android by getting five OS upgrades—and six years of security updates—guaranteed through 2029.

    • Good catch, but I'd wager thats a blanket blurb on their template, or someone can't count… as these are some of their first long-support handsets.

They've advertised 6 years too heavily, globally, not to at least roughly stick to it (I expect a few missed months, not early end of support).

    • Check the edge 5o neo thread on lack of updates. Donno about this model but for Neo we had to go to Moto forums and make a fuss before they released the updates.

      • I got the update on Friday or Saturday last week. India got Android 15 around 5 weeks ago for Edge 50 Neo. It was released about 6 weeks ago for Edge 50 Ultra and other models. My friend with a g84 is going to get in mid 2025 which probably translates to October, knowing Motorola

No headphone jack is a dealbreaker

    • I would have disagreed until this year when I walk a lot more for work.
Suddenly the inability to charge while using my headphones is noteworthy….
BUT this has a wireless charger, so I guess I can make it work.

      • Using wired headphones is a niche segment now. Personally I haven't used wired headphones for over two years now - and even that was just because I forgot mine and bought some $10 wired ones in a pinch.

        • Its less common, sure.
But for those of us who enjoy nice headphones, it's still releveant to let people know.

  • Can it have two physical SIMs (for travel abroad etc)?

    • This Australian model has one physical nano sim card slot with the second one an e-sim so no, you can't have two physical sims.

    • +1

When I traveled I moved my Aussie sim to esim, and used a physical overseas.

      • How easy or hard is it to change physical sim into esim? What's the process like?

        • Call or visit phone company, type in the new sim id they give you. Done.

  • Unlockable bootloader for possible CalyxOS?

    • Most moto phones have unlockable bootloader. Only issue is because they churn these out with a different SoC so fast, there's no dev support for them.

      • Calyx OS doesn't support G75 yet

    Subpar specs

Hard pass. Motorola are rubbish at their software updates and also optimisation, bugs galore.

    • +1

I think you imply that my Moto-G54 is not good for MY-use? Pls provide details, thanks.

      • -3

For god's sake, just Google it and Reddit the issues Motorola users have. I have had a Moto edge 40 neo that took a million years to get android 14 updates, plus choppy UI and laggy camera that never got fixed so I sold it. Had an equivalent powered Poco F3 that ran smooth as butter.

The Motorola might be a good deal on the surface but important to be aware of the potential pitfalls. Sick and tired of it. Absolutely sick and tired.

        • you'll find that sort of info on all brands out there and sure when you are facing niggling bugs it can seem like that brand is the worst.

In my experience, over decades, the moto g series are the best phones I've ever bought or used ever since anolog mobile phones were invented and I've used a lot of brands and phones.

We currently have g13, g54 and g84s, I am watching this thread as I am currently looking at the g75 as the commitment to provide 6 years of updates is very compelling not sure yet if it tops the g84 which has more ram and a 3.5 dedicated headphone socket.

Every phone has issues, but what I've seen with the moto's is nothing compared to the problems I've had with apple phones, nokia, samstung, sony and even zte and the price point also needs to be considered. Not saying they are perfect especially now that Lenovo owns the brand and sure we even had one older Motorola model in our work fleet some years ago that had a firmware bug with roaming which was pretty problematic when a bunch of us had to travel overseas to setup a team, but then at the same time our fleet or iphones were experiencing catastrophic failure causing staff to loose all their data (I have a draw of dead iphones, dead ipads and exploded macbooks as a reminder of the apples quality issues), so against other brands like apple the motorola moto units were a safer bet, little point over-investing in a technology like this, they are built with a very limited service life in mind.

Are there any Xiaomi Redmi phones that will work here when bought overseas?

  • How about nfc?

  • This or the $299 Samsung A35?
