This reminded me that I need to go find mine, power it up, and let the updates install. The problem with moving houses and not having everything old set up to use the new wifi network.

    • Always just keep the wifi settings the same when i move or upgrade gear. Makes life so simple with all the connected things !

      • I use to do the same for about 15yrs… then i moved in with my now wife and she complained that my 64 character wifi password, hidden SSID and use of an IP address whitelist was too problematic. She had already started using the default SSID on our exetel provided router too.

Got a new mesh system for the new house so it was my chance to at least change the SSID to something i can use on future hardware.

        • Hah ! Classic. If I had better IT security hygiene I would also lose that battle !

          • @mcgrathkerr: The annoying part is that i use to have my parents' wifi SSID and password the same as my old setup so when ever they visited me, i wouldn’t have to manually connect them to my wifi.

Now there is extra work when they visit me or when i visit them to get everyone onto wifi.

On the brightside, the fact that I am not using a 64 character password anymore, i didn't frustrate our landscaper when he was setting up remootio for our driveway gate.

not the cheapest it ever was, bought this in April for $150 from JBhifi, just saying

    • Will it be cheaper on Boxing Day, maybe by stacking with some other bonus?

      • +2

Unlikely as it's already been cleared out by most shops

  • being replaced by the inferior G55 with only 4GB RAM

Depends on use I'd rather a G55 since it should get Android 16 and an extra 2 years of security updates

    • Don't knock four gigabyte's , it works for me !

      • Brand, model & android# ?

        • Vivo Y55 , slowish but livable

          • @Murkymerv: How much ram you need depends on Android-version & APPs.

            Net suggests VivoY55 using Android12 & hence YOUR-phone (Android12 & APPs) likely to use LESS-ram than Android14 & thereafter.
Turn on Developer_options & see your ram usage @ Running_Services.
'slowish but livable': if your ram usage is 3.5Gb ish then the slowish is due to the weak processor: Snapdragon-680 ?

    • G55 4Gb ram: only-IF you're a light-user, your APPs NOT heavy on ram & Android16 NOT a major step-up in ram usage 🤔

      • +2

Not sure why people disagree. Android OS uses around 3GB with no apps running. 4GB is usable in a budget phone but not ideal in the world where a web browser uses more than 1GB

      • Android14 ram usage on my G54…to add context to ALL the comments above, https://ibb.co/3Rz02WR

Imo, get 6Gb-ram as min. due to flexibility for 3 yrs use & we have NO-idea what Android16 & APPs will need.

        Fyi, my HOME-bound mobile-phone running Android9 & the total-ram ~1.1Gb ish

        • Moto-G54 seems to be vanilla-Android & what it does during sleeping hrs is unknown, https://ibb.co/dW0Nc1j

You'll be surprise how much ram is use by Android14 to deliver it's features. What it calls APPs include functions of phone & it need lots of ram.

  • I can't go back from OLED myself.

My g62 is absolutely brainfarting most days now, especially anything around the camera. Almost once a day the phone seems to just freeze.
G54 only has 10% better cpu speed.

    • +5

CPU speed barely matters nowadays. This class of cpu is fast enough to do anything.

    • Camera freezing is probably not a CPU speed issue.

      • Ram??

        • Try resetting yr phone

Is there a hotspot wifi and/or Bluetooth connectivity issues with this phone? I've noticed dropouts frequently with Bluetooth.

Any differences between Android 13 and 14 on this phone. Slowdowns, etc?

    • Is there a hotspot wifi

      27-Oct-24: I was testing free-wifi & downloading movies via 1DM-torrent. Soon after I selected 'Alien Romulus 2024 2160P PSA', in total, I got a consistent 20+ MB/s (NOT Mb/s 🤣)…exceeding speed-capped mobile-data.

I was hoping to load the image sent to my friend as proof but WhatsApp failed to retrieve image 😭

Can't beat that price but remember - Manufacturers Warranty 12 months only. From my past experience, most retailers & Motorola support don't give a rat's ass about any issues, after that warranty period of 12 months (unlike those premium or flagship phones that get covered for 2 years, due to the Consumer Law or ACCC threats etc). Yes, my old MotoG* bricked around 13 months after the purchase and it had to go straight into e-waste. No amount of emails and phone calls helped to get an escalation raised to get a favourable outcome. Thanks to Motorola Australia support team. Buyer beware!

    • Oh no, how did it get bricked? I really thought ACL would come into play here.

      • Did nothing in particular, it was a no-display case. I doubted a mainboard issue but not sure as there is a slight chance of battery failure too.

Laughed when 3.5mm headphone jack become a selling point LOL

    • +4

      Why ? It's a feature.

      • +2

Hi Meeeeeerrrrrv, I think they meant it wasn't that long ago you'd just expect a phone would have it.

        • +1

Listen here neeeeerrrrrd , have a great Christmas 🎁

          • +1

@Murkymerv: Lol you got negged for being nice. Merry Xmas to you also.

      It's the enshitification on technology.

Just a heads-up, this phone doesn’t work on Indian 5G networks. I got one for my father, and it doesn’t support Jio 5G.😭

    • Oh really? I was just thinking to buy one for the same reason

      • +2

It will work on 4g, but not on 5g network due to this you will miss out unlimited 5g data plans 🙄

        • Oh no, I was literally looking for unlimited 5g data usage. Wondering what's the difference between models sold here and in India?

        • +3

According to Jio Website: Jio 5G is available on the n28, n78, and n258 bands.
          According to Airtel Website they use 900MHz, 1800Mhz, 2100MHz, 3300Mhz and 26GHz = n8, n3, n1, n78 and n258

The Australian version of this phone supports: n1/n3/n5/n7/n8/n20/n26/n28/n38/n40/n41/n77/n78

So one would expect it to work on Airtel/Jio except for the mmWave (n258) network.

Maybe Jio is doing something "special"

    • Can confirm it works with Airtel 5G

      • Great! Jio is the only provider offering 5G in my area, and my Samsung S22 Plus isn't even compatible according to the MyJio app.

  • If I didn't just get one of those Moto 50 Edge Neo's on that crazy good deal earlier this month, would for sure jump on this! Good deal!

    • +2

Yepp. We can swap if you want.

  • Getting a budget phone for my kid, been looking at the Oppo A40. Gaming performance probably is the top priority for the phone (after budget, which is under like $300). Does the oppo with snapdragon 6 gen 1 outperform this you reckon? (I know they are both shit tier)

  • Overall great phone at this price, been running one for about 4 months however has become a bit sluggish after Android update - anyone else finding this?

  • This or refurb iPhone SE 2020?

    • No comparison really? Or am I missing the sarcasm?

  • Hold on. Christmas is coming around the corner. Other retailers will sell phones with higher price–performance ratio.

    • +3

      Christmas is actually tomorrow.

Most boxing day sales have already started 😂

        • +1

Boxing day sales seem to just be black friday sales after a small break.

  • I have an issue with this phone when receiving calls on WhatsApp. A lot of the time I get no screen notifications and don't know who is calling, so I have to unlock the screen. Tried every option and suggestion and nothing works. Has anyone else had this problem?

    • I think it is an app issue. I get the same problem with my OPPO.

  • How's the camera on this?

Obviously not expecting near flagship quality but I don't want it to be "bad"

    • Photos look OK.

    • +1

It’s average, so somewhere between “bad” and flagship quality. Photos in bright light are okay, but low light photos kinda suck.

  • +1

I'm using one as we speak, had it for three months, I'd say buy at this price. I paid 300 and I was happy with that (couldn't wait for a bargain to pop up). It's a good phone for this price.

  • For this price I would have upgraded from my similar G32 with a cracked screen. But saw it too late.
