            • @Ademos: Yes.
Are you surprised that a car made in 2005 is still running, or that it has done about 250K, or that it has required insignificant maintenance outside oil changes, that as transport it now costs an incredibly low amount compared to buying a new car… or something else?

Or would you be horrified at your perceived social status if you were seen driving it…. or can you reel off a list of design features that horrify you in terms of how terribly dangerous a commuter it is?

              Or something else?

PS… are you planning on topping yourself at a particular predetermined age, because you perceive that would be too old?

              • -1

@rooster7777: Im surprised you dont have to rub down your sweaty budget hatch with dry grasses after a hard run. Gee they just dont make them how they used to hey, sport.

My point was drum brakes in 2024 is unconscionable. My e-scooter has discs.

                • +2

@Ademos: So you don't actually have any point….. "unconscionable"… not right or reasonable, but no reason why it's unreasonable. Very wise.

Topped off with the unselfconscious statement that your escooter has discs. Aside from that being a cost decision (being cheaper to make on a scooter)….. the fact that you admit to owning an e scooter, then self righteously banging on about safety of rear drum brakes on commuter cars demonstrates an amazing lack of self awareness.

                  • +1

@rooster7777: Drum brakes are fine. I bet those making these comments won't ever track their cars. So what difference does it make? You're just going to drive like a wimp on the road anyway.

          • @rooster7777:

The 2005 toyota echo I sometimes drive has rear drums… and you…you… wouldn't notice the difference. Neither do I.

Have you ever braked hard? Locked up rears?
No rear disc meaning no DSC. Another saftey feature they could of added. Yes, even the cost(s) reflected it.
Then it would be even a better buy!

            • @vinni9284: Have I ever braked hard? Locked up the rears?
No I haven't, not in the echo. I drive the echo mainly in urban areas. I don't drive reading a phone, I don't fall asleep driving, I don't have lengthy conversations watching the face of a passenger etc etc. My first defence is primary safety…. I don't get in situations where I need to lock up the brakes.
How many times have you locked up your brakes in commuting environments?

You must be sooo glad you presumably aren't old enough to have experienced driving cars with front drum brakes! That would have been terrifying for you! I do hope you never had to suffer the trauma of a vehicle without airbags! Presumably you refuse to be in any vehicle without all available electronic safety measures…. but you ride an e scooter? Breathtaking tunnel vision there! No wonder you need a cocoon!

I wonder about other facets of your life…. to live so safely. No alcohol, obviously no smoking, annual cardiac, prostrate, bowel, melatonin, etc checks…. no walking in long grass, scrupulous checking the house for spiders but no risky insecticides, never outside with earplugs or headphones lest a runaway truck gets you, a food taster to avoid nasty poisoning, a personal bodyguard to avoid any hostile social encounters, gloves to avoid germ contamination.

              Are you howard hughes?

              • @rooster7777: Thanks for your reflection of your life story. It's nice to know that your rear drums work well. Still I'd prefer if it had rear discs, regardless of your perception and philosophy of life.
You've wasted 10 mins of your life fabricating and typing this.. and 2 mins of mine to respond.

                • @vinni9284: I know I spent a bit of time…but it wasn't for you.
It was to demonstrate to others that your purpose is simply throwaway lines to fluff your ego.
My purpose was highlighting your intelligence.

                  • @rooster7777: I thought I'll tell you that i prefer rear discs. Just in case you didn't understand what i meant.

                  • @rooster7777: best you don't tell em about the new EVs that are coming with drum brakes

e.g. VW models like the Audi Q4 etron

              • @rooster7777: RUOK? Its not that serious to have another stroke over

  • +38

Seems to be a whole lot of rich people in the thread today; sorry it's not the Ferrari or Lambo deal you were all hanging out for on this discount website.

Driven one for several months for work, just handed it back last week. Yep, not the worlds best car, but for the price it can't be beat. With the current cost of living crisis, this is a great option for families doing it tough but still in need of a vehicle to get the family from A to B.

Handles fine, drives fine. Acceleration isn't like a v8 turbo if that's what you're after, but like any car it's how you drive it. Excelerate early in anticipation to be going 100kmph on the freeway and you'll be fine, instead of doing 65kmph all the way along the ramp and suddenly realising you need to be driving to the conditions.

It also has a sports mode easily tapped into from drive, which opens the revs right up and allows for that bit of extra power. I've gone 0-100 in about 11 seconds which is plenty quick.

With 10yr warranty, no brainer. Buy for 22k, use for 5yrs, sell with 5yr warranty left for 10k = total cost 12k/ $2,400 a year.

      • +2

Or you know, just be doing it tough financially but still require a reliable car to get the kids to school and you to work…

Sorry we can't all drive Mercedes AMG GT's mate

        • -1

Mate, I have a 2001 Corolla. She is reliable as they come and way cheaper than this car

          • +11

@Brick Tamland: Awesome, but some people require new vehicles for various reasons, and buying second hand without warranty means it could be a lemon, nobody knows until after they've got the keys. In states like NSW, having to get a pink slip annually to show roadworthiness isn't worth having an old car, so it's easier and sometimes like in this case cheaper, to just buy new.

Nobody is making you buy an MG ZS champ, you don't have to knock those who do.

            • -1

@nokidsandthreemoney: I appreciate the appeal of a new car with a long warranty and I think that's really the only thing selling them. They do seem reliable enough and there is reasonable dealer support so I think if you can hang on to it long term it does make sense. In saying that, I believe there is better buying in the used market with slightly more risk of being used by someone else.

              • +4

@Brick Tamland: Secondhand car market is trashed by rideshare and food delivery industry. It’s not the same as it was 10 years ago to buy a 10 years old car and it’ll just work.

          • +2

@Brick Tamland: I wonder which car would fair better in a accident, this or the 2001 rolla. Does the rolla have airbags?

            • @t_c: Is that the Corolla who’s ad campaign was mainly centered around it having a 100kw engine?

            • @t_c: Yep. Drivers airbag.

              • +1

@Brick Tamland: How effective is a 23 year old airbag?

                • @t_c: I don't plan on testing it out. Why don't you test yours?

        • username checks out

    • +8

Test drove a $178k Audi Q8 turbo diesel last weekend. Lag on acceleration was also 2 seconds. Downright dangerous. Absolutely gutless below 3000rpm. Tested and confirmed the 2 second delay with salesman in backseat. He said you need to anticipate speed changes and get used to it. No thanks. Audi no longer part of my wish list.

      • -1

Best buy a urus. You won’t find that 2 seconds lag.

      • just get the SQ8 TFSI :p

or a near new SQ8 TDI that has a bi-turbo / sequential turbo setup

      • No lag with electric cars.

      • -1

Lmfao, last time I had to anticipate the lag I was driving an Auto box ford transit circa 2005ish. now that thing was dangerous.

I suspect many of the whiners aren't rich…. but it does make one's ego pump just a tad for a fleeting second.

      • -2

Im not rich, But i'll still turn my nose down at chinese cars. Ill buy second hand instead. let the oldies buy the mg's. Just steer clear of them on the roads, the amount that end up on dash cam owners seems to reflect their shitty driving abilities quite well.

    • +10

      Yes, I agree.

Picked up 3 of these for work an they're fine.

You cannot expect people to pay $35k for a base model car.

The interior at least looks good and is way better than hyundai excel when it first came out.

People saying it doesn't accelerate hard, mate, where are you going? Even on the freeway was ok. In our 40-50km streets you don't even notice.

      Want a fast car? Just get a $60k model y or 3.

Or go spend $100k on a euro that will cost you just as much for maintenance.

    • +4

There are alot of very insecure people.

      • I’d bet more than half the people criticising this car have never driven it let alone been near one.
Lot criticisms having nothing to do with the car. Just a cheap China bash.

If anybody wants any real views on the strengths and weaknesses of this car join the MG ZS or ZST Facebook group.
Lot happy owners in that group and fair minded discussion of some the not so great aspects of the car.

Can’t believe half of what you read here.

        https://www.facebook.com/groups/2945843638973858/discussion/…

    • +4

Exactly. I have a few cars in my stable but even I can see that this fills a niche at a certain price point. The 100+ upvotes also reflects the majority's pragmatic view, but you'll always get a few (profanity) who thinks the equipment specs should be that of a Bentley for that price when they won't even consider the car in the first place due to snobbery. Just (profanity) in a thread they have no business with.

    • +4

For a lot of people a new ZS is good enough. Some people e.g. elderly do local trips and only rake up a few thousand kms a year (maybe less), they dont need extra power or anything fancy. Its also backed by new car warranty.

    • +2

People would have been ready to pay 20k extra for the exact same car if it had 4 circles or a three pronged star symbol in the front.

  • Ok i know the drivetrain and engine sucks interm of power…. What a bout reliability?

    • +9

I've got a 1.5 year old ZST (1.3L 3cyl turbo with 6sp ZF auto) for my daughter - don't get the 1.5L 4cyl with CVT, its a dog to drive

only issue I've had is a TPMS sensor die and they needed to replace it, which means all four come out as they are coded as a set.

Was the long warranty that convinced me, as the local MG dealer I bought from is also the local Mercedes dealer that I bought both my E-classes from.

I've been riding in SAIC produced VWs, GMs, etc for the last 25 years and seen how they have evolved over time (just as Hyundai did)

      • +3

Geez you buy E class cars for yourself but a cheap MG for your kids?

        • +4

          They spared no expense.

          • +8

@Brick Tamland: I spared her paying stupid MB prices for a service (~$1000, compared to MG at ~$300) - not to mention the MB tax on OEM service parts

part of responsible car ownership is being able to afford the running costs

when she has the means by which pay for luxury vehicle ownership, then her choice

            • @HeXa: Need an extra kid to look after?! Good advice.

        • +4

the A-class Mercs aren't worth the $$$s - paying 2-3x the price of the ZST for entry level meh-ness

The ZST has all the safety tech, way better after sales support, and my kid appreciates not looking like a trust fund nepo baby working for APS

        • +3

Many kids have to buy their own cars… by necessity.
Many kids buy their own cars as part of a life lesson of responsibility.
Are you someone that buys expensive cars for their kids…. or are you a kid that thinks their parents should buy them expensive cars? …. or none of the above?
Ozbargain never ceases to bring moths to the light…. moths that clearly aren't in need of bargains.

        • +2

          He/she worked for the car.

          The child did not.

The child is more than welcome to buy an E class if they had the money…

          • +3

            @CalmLemons: ^ This

I grew up relatively poor in the country, so learnt the value of money (is why I'm here at OzB)

Now I'm in the position to be able to ensure my child has basic needs met (food, housing, transport, education)

If she wants the gucci lifestyle, she has to earn it

  • +5

The MG3 is the best value for money car new IMO. Before purchase, join a FB group and you will read discussions relating to any of the inherited issues each particular model has and you can make your decision. The warranty is reassuring however its at 10K km/yearly intervals (which ever comes first) and priced around the $240 - $300 mark. It's a no brainer that they are clawing the savings on a new cheap car with their servicing costs.
Poor spark plug quality issues lasting ~40Kms & leaking A/C inside the passenger compartment have been reported for the MG3.

    • +5

Don’t worry mate, it’s just another typical let’s bash Chinese products mindset. 99.9% have no personal experience of MG cars but they will still love to thrash.

People had same attitude towards Korean cars 15 years ago.

Every car has its own target market.

      • +5

They're plenty of happy chappies on FB taking about how happy they are with thier MGs. China is starting to improve on thier quality control. Japan was junk at the start, dubbed 'Jap Crap'. Look at them now.

        • Completely different culture .

          • +1

@beach bum: Regardless. Many Japanese manufacturing principles are adopted to many different organsations. 5S, Poke Yoke, Kanban, Muda, Muri … etc .. plus I'm sure China will perfect and invent new ones

          • +1

@beach bum: Japanese economy booming: Japanese products and people hated. Chinese economy booming: Chinese products and people hated. Cultural relevance: zero.

      • +1

Theres a dozen people here with first hand experience driving these saying they are awful. You can add me.

      • +1

This, first we crap on Japanese cars, then Korean cars, and now Chinese cars….

      • -2

the chinese government and all their propaganda government backed and controlled news outlets are super thin skinned and can't handle legitimate criticism of all the human rights abuses, organ harvesting, slavery etc so they resort to whatabboutism and cry racism and whine all the time that everyone hates them. Well duh, if you do bad things, and try to silence anyone who talks about it, people are going to point it out. don't be a shitty government and there will be less criticism. We shouldn't be tacitly endorsing a country that abuses their own people and uses them as spare parts body part factories for the CCP party officials by purchasing their products. absolutely vile place.

        • +1

It's a car post bot. Not much of a moral highground to stand while helping the US genocide Palestinians/repeating propaganda with no valid sources.

          • @Vampy: Hamas rejecting multiple peace deals, leaders pocketing the foreign aid for themselves, and the killing of civilians with over 130 plus suicide attacks during the intafada doesn't bother you does it?

  • +2

Will they even be around in 10 years at this rate? Shouldn't have to discount a product by this much, unless it doesnt offer enough value at the current price point. Stick to Japanese, if you want to avoid ongoing maintenance costs

    • +5

Which rate? They're not losing money, SAIC have been around for almost 70 years. They're an automotive behemoth.

It's going to be all Chinese cars soon, MG will have an advantage by being an established brand.

      • -5

Theyre selling hot garbage for 22k. It it werent for their population, they probably would have 0 demand for it. Most reasonable people woulnt buy this and if in a position of need, would consider a quality used car instead. Any used car from up to 20 years ago will outperform this car in all facets, so that says a lot about what is is currently on offer. Definitely not a bargain in my opinion. Then again, each to their own

        • +1

Any used car from up to 20 years ago will outperform this car in all facets

          Fuel economy?

          • +4

@TEER3X: My mate has an MG3 and he said the real world fuel economy is shite. Any old Echo or Yaris will get better fuel economy than this car, even with 5 passengers on board

Likely to be around longer than VW will be if you read the news and listen to the VW CFO.

      • VW have always been dodgy, they need to go away

      • +2

We'll MG is owned by SAIC and is a Chinese state run entity. I find it hilarious for people that own these cars and buy them because they still think it's British brand. Not like they were any good under British ownership either.

If you look up the forums, including Chinese ones, they don't have the best reputation with their combustion engines.

        • Their sunroofs aren’t too crash hot either , more of a funnel .

    • Which Japanese car do j buy for my 22k budget that offers several years warranty?

  • this or 2nd hand lexus is350 fsport 2013?

    • +4

      Lexus

    • +2

Most likely smarter to get a 1-2 year old mitsubishi ASX if needed a budget SUV for about 20k

    • I'd spring for a Bentley Bentayga

  • +2

    84 kW naturally aspirated 1.5 L moving 1.3 T via a 4-speed torque converter.

    That's a lower power to weight ratio than a 2000 1.4 L Hyundai Excel.

Throw in poor handling and braking and this car does a great job of simulating a base model hatch from 20 - 30 years ago.

Just buy a 1 year old used rival model that feels like it's 1 year old, instead of 20 - 30.

  • +6

My sister has a MG ZS 1.5.

    She bought it new.

She is happy with the car.

However, she does not like all the alarms pinging away - lane assist, proximity etc etc.

    • -2

in the EV and ZST with Pilot, most you can silence / change behaviour in the settings

the ZST got the same criticism from lazy reviewers who didn't make the effort to look

      • +1

Maybe because the safety features in otber modern cars actually work?

        • the features work

just you get the MG 'bong' noise for things like lane assist deactivating (e.g. when going below 60km/h or line markings are faded/gone)

One of my Mercs makes way more noise because of collision avoidance warnings

  • +1

Seriously considering this for my ageing parents. Will be their last car. Need something reliable. They dont drive highway, mostly around town etc.
Any actual owners can comment on reliability

    • +2

If it is going to be your parents last car of their life. Maybe buy them something nice.

    • Get the ZST instead, it come with 360 camera and active safety.

    • I get your logic. But do YOU want to be left with an ageing, highly depreciating, poor quality car? That doesn't sound fun. The 10 year warranty would give you and your parents peace of mind, though.

    • -1

if they putt putt around, Im sure they will last long enough.

  • +1

For everyone whinging - what alternatives would you recommend for a brand new SUV under $22k?

    • This is not an SUV. It's a hatch with a higher seating position and roof line. Ground clearance is unchanged (154 - 164 mm).

      • +2

        Here are the manufacturers specs:
        https://resource.digitaldealer.com.au/pdf/80801195566d7cc462…

164mm and in line with other compact SUVs in class.

Also, unhelpful comment, I'm not asking about ground clearance or debating if it is a SUV or not. What alternatives would you recommend for a brand new compact SUV under $22k?

      • +5

Ah yes, all of the off-road performance of a regular hatchback, but now also with crappier on-road performance!

    • +3

Perhaps people need to end their obsession with the bullshit that is an “SUV”. Nothing “S” about them…

    • +1

      Suzuki Ignis for $22.5k?
But like others have said, buying a brand new SUV might not be the best decision to begin with.

      • Ignis is tiny, it was smaller then honda jazz and Suzuki baleno

        • My sister traded in her Suzuki Ignis to buy a MG ZS 1.5.

Both the MG ZS and MG3 are surprisingly roomy inside.

        • What would you recommend instead then?

  • I'd like to pay $3k more to get a suzuki swift……
