It’s not called dumping bro. It’s now called over-capacity, if this term has any meaning at all to free market economists.

        • lol… Yes apologies, I meant 'over-capacity' not 'dumping'.

      • +3

Irony when Holden were selling rebadged daewoos and every other company did until about 10 years ago until the rise of the SUV.

        • +1

What's that got to do with Chinese Dumping?

        • +8

Irony when Holden were selling rebadged daewoos and every other company did until about 10 years ago until the rise of the SUV.

I don't get the irony or the connection with MG.

GM - that's General Motors of America, not MG of China - sold its cars as Holdens in Australia. GM has a plethora of international car brands under its wing - some, which do not exist anymore, like Holden, and Daewoo before that… 'Oldsmobile'. Their other brands include Opel, Buick, Chevrolet, Hummer etc. They are not 'rebadged Daewoos' but the other way around - they are rebadged GM cars, and mostly all shit or unappealing or too expensive… which is why GM eventually failed with Holden.

Failed because the competition was too high. GM / Holden could not undercut the competition, like what MG / Chinese brands are doing in Australia.

So tell us the irony or the connection.

      • +19

Call it whatever you want, but just be aware that it's great for consumers. If Chinese companies or the Chinese government wants to subsidise cars for Australian consumers then excellent!

It's not like we have a domestic car industry to protect (in which case yes, we should be concerned). But Australian consumers shouldn't pay to protect Korean, Japanese or European car companies or Thai assembly plants.

Competition is good, and companies from other countries will have to find ways to compete.

      • Unfair competition for whom?

  • +27

    One of the worst too

    • Why? I don't know much about MG.

      • +16

MG was a British brand that was bought out by a Chinese company. Personally I wouldn't touch a chinese car with a 40 ft pole, but Im not this car's target audience anyway. It's probably the 2024 equivalent of a hyundai excel

This car seems to be very popular anecdotally with people who need their last car before entering palliative care

        • +11

he's getting downvoted but its not untrue

i see the most decrepit one foot in the grave fossils driving these… and MG3s

which is what this is basically… its an MG3 on stilts

          i has the same 1.5 n/a four with a 4 spd auto

the more upmarket ones have a turbo 1.2 and cvt or 6 spd auto

          the EV is $35k

How dare you compare a Hyundai excel to a Mg.

          • +8

@1989jdm: The original Excels were pretty bad…

            • +21

@Certified Angus: The excels were highly reliable and robust. In a time where Korean cars were shun as Chinese cars are now, the excel built a name for Hyundai, proving the nay sayers wrong, making it a respected brand today.

Conversely MGs are trash, the brand will crash and burn.

              • +8

@1989jdm: Agree but not at first they were rubbish.

              • +13

@1989jdm: The original excels were extremely bad.

I remember my partner who lived on a dirt road purchased one, she lived on a gravel road and drove it home to vibrations caused the mirrors to fall off where they were glued on. She had so many troubles with that the dealer eventually gave her a sonata as compensation.

A few years later the cars where extremely robust, but the first few years they where worse then any of the Chinese cars I’ve seen lately.

The Chinese cars are not falling apart on the drive home, they have better warranties then any of the euros which is why oldies are buying them as their last car. They are are old enough to put aside the ego about brands and know a warranty will last them until they can no longer drive.

I’ve driven hire MGs with over 150k on them and they are driving perfect and super cheap to run around. If the quality was a problem they’ll hire companies would be buying other brands and flogging these off. Interestingly a lot hire companies flogged off the Toyotas during covid and have since purchased a lot of MGs and haven’t swapped back.

The Chinese car companies are super competitive they compete against a lot of brands in their home country we only get the better models/brands.

Some would argue they are winning on both quality and technology. Toyota is adopting byds hybrid platforms for example.

Yea these MGs have nothing to do with to r original brand, they purchased the name to help with Sinophobia.

                • -2

@811b11e8: A warranty is no good to you if the fault is "normal wear and tear ". If the gearbox or motor die at 60,000 kilometres than they can claim normal wear and tear. And believe me , they will.

            • +4

@Certified Angus: They're popular on the racing scene now. Who would have guessed.

        • +38

          Personally I wouldn't touch a chinese car

Within a few years you'll be needing to re-evaluate that approach or you'll be walking. The market is headed to total Chinese domination.

          • -2

@Bruceflix: Almost certain that within a few years China invades Taiwan and then watch what happens to all the Chinese car warranties and parts then…
            And I’m chinese

              • -1

@Bruceflix: I guess they'd do that by invading some part of China, and not Taiwan?

                • -1

@ItsMeAgro: If China invaded Taiwan it would be regarded as a civil war, even by the RoC, and certainly by the Australian Government. It's seemingly more likely that a war with China will happen due to the issues with the Philippines that are heating up a lot right now.

                  • +1

@Bruceflix: They are already at war. The war has never formally ended. China sending their navy to blockade the island until negotiations end in their favour will be spun as seeking a peaceful resolution to an ongoing conflict. It will be the USA who will be seen as the foreign force.

              • @Bruceflix: hahahahaha..thats a valid question

          • -3

@Bruceflix: That would be a sad day for the roads. Chinese cars drive like Chinese drivers, poorly 😋

          • @Bruceflix: I will still be driving my 1999 corolla.

          • @Bruceflix: I dont think so. They will never completely dominate the entire market to where theres no choice.. thats just silly thought.

Chinese cars are proving pretty good. Just my take. Ny last few cars have been german made, and have been nothing but problems, high cost services, denied or heavily disputed warranty claims.. so i went with a chinese electric and bave been blown away. Tesla and BYD are on another and in my eyes are leading not trailing the expensive german marquees.
Go drive a Tesla Model 3 or a BYD seal.. and be prepapred to be dissaplointed by a 9tk C class or 3 series.

@BusMan247: Obviously you don’t enjoy driving

            • @davlloyd: Its not like BMW or Merc are some nostalgic csr rides like an old V8 or GTR. Theyre boring, not that quick, and ti be honest, cut costs everywhere.

When the e46s csme out they were world class no expense spared.. and you didnt have to buy the M3 to get a great car. 320 BMW with a 1.5ltr petrol.. lol.

Where as these days, anything other than the M3 now gets you a plastic steering wheel!! Enjoy driving? Absolutely do. I jjst know my cars having owned so many of them.

I'd rather cheap Chinese than overpriced American garbage any day.

        • +1

I'm very happy with my Chinese car.

    • +5

      The facts are otherwise.

This MG ZS Excite if driven for say 200,000km will not only cost less to buy but also to less run and maintain than any Euro car especially VWs with special mention to BMWs and Mercedes.

It is far truer to say any Eurocar will be trash before 200,000km with huge maintenance costs to get there than to paint all Chinese cars as rubbish.

Anecdotally these cheap Chinese cars are quite reliable.

Had a rental MG, if rained, I was in country SA and Google maps took me on a dirt road. I've driven 4wd, speedway, demo derbies, and by far this was the scariest experience in my life. Do not touch this junk. Even flipping a car during a demo and landing on its wheels left me with less angst than this vehicle.

    • +17

Had a rental MG from Avis/budget it’s one of the worst car in term handling, it’s a guessing game at roundabouts not sure if the car will drive forward or just rev a few more times

    • +4

Also had a rental MG. The issue I had was there was an RPM range where the ECU had no idea what gear to go into so it felt like it was constantly switching between two gears. Did a mountain run in it then once a day after that, the check engine light comes on then turns itself off. Also went on a lot of dirt roads but didn't have handling issues like the others have had.

    • This seems to be more of a tyre problem than the car, am I missing something?

      • +11

        It’s a driver problem.

I’ve driven a hire mg for about 5k kilometres all over Queensland in rain and sun.

They are a cheap car with a small engine.

They don’t handle like a rally car but they are safe to drive if you drive to the conditions and car. Problem was more likely an over confident driver expecting a performance car.

        • How dare you drive an extremely budget car like a budget car. rental cars NEED to be driven like rally cars or you have wasted your $

  • +16

So… for $21,690 you can get a tiny kia picanto. But $300 more and you get an SUV with 10 year warranty..

    • +20

Wait till you drive one of these! The Kia Picanto will feel light years ahead of this MG ICE in terms of engineering. The MG might have a bunch of gadgets but it drives horribly.

      • +24

We rented one of these in our Goldcoast trip and when we came back and drove our Cerato, I felt like I was driving an E Class.

  • +19

Hired one in cairns for the week. Was a POS and dangerous at roundabouts because there was approximately 2 seconds lag from accelerating to actually having the wheels turns and car move forward.

Must’ve taken close to 15 secs to reach 100km/h

    • +13

Funny you say this, I did a 0-100 in an mg3 and it was closer to 19 seconds.

      Also, super gross car.

    • +3

When I did a demo of the MG3 a few months ago, the dealer was on a free way. I pulled over, waited until there was no traffic, and pushed my foot to the floor full pressure full everything.

You're hardly exaggerating, it took 12 seconds to hit 100. In fact, considering the added weight of this model, I'd expect 15 to be about right.

    • -1

You just have had the sports edition

    • This is so true. I experienced exactly the same with MG HS which I got as a mystery car rental in Melbourne last week.

  • +3

Rented a MG3 a couple months ago, the gear box was laggy… Better getting their short range EV instead of their ICE.

  • +8

    free at Steam soon

  • +11

You should do you research thoroughly. There is plenty of information on other forums, including Chinese ones, which state that Chinese brand ICE cars are rubbish. Their focus has mainly been on EV for a long time, and ICE has taken a back seat. If you are looking at a Chinese car, look at EV from a brand such as BYD, because that is where most of the RnD has been spent.

I have driven one of these as a rental. Very average compared to a cheap Korean or Japanese ICE car. BYD's have been Ok as a rental for city driving.

    • -4

AI research shows that you are redundant & will be replaced by AI ;) perplexity.ai pro ~
Rapid improvement: Chinese automakers made significant progress & quality has improved dramatically, especially in last decade.
Some models like Chery, have made huge leaps in quality.
Chinese cars have good value for money, comparable to more established brands at lower prices.
Some ICE cars criticised for build quality, driving dynamics& design choices are not universal.
Chinese brands like MG& GWM/Haval are gaining significant market share in countries like Australia, indicating growing consumer acceptance.
Chinese are now focusing on EVs, as more competitive& innovative.
Chinese automakers adapt quickly& improve their products based on market feedback.

  • -2

Rental car companies will replace their fleet with this turds :/ already seems like half the cars are MG

    • +4

Thats why they get e10 on the refill. No respect shown, none given.

  • From the comments "You can't afford to buy cheap goods"!

  • +16

For a different perspective an older family member has an MG3 2023 model. Bought brand new for around $18k from memory. For the money I think it can’t be beaten. The use case is simple driving around suburbs and maybe the odd trip down the highway of around 100-200km. I would be reluctant to take off road or a family adventure but for general city driving I think it is good value.
Handles decently, doesn’t have the greatest power or acceleration but is enough for an older persons or perhaps a youngsters first car and city driving for short distances.

  • +7

I am just here for the lols at this point

  • +6

Amazing to buy a smaller SUV for @$20k, but can't expect the world for that price.
They're popular with the punters & rental companies.
So plenty who are voting with their money.

    • +5

by that voting with their money logic lots of people also buy meth

      • I have heard its more fun than a ferrari..

  • +4

Had a rental MG at Sunshine Coast, what a horrible car. The acceleration shake the whole car, braking is bad and I felt bad for the car while driving uphill, it was struggling a lot.
    Everything is cheap in it.

    • +1

Aside from the brakes that's not exclusively an MG thing though, it's just a consequence of an underpowered engine. I used to drive a 1.8L Corolla and overtaking uphill at highway speeds was almost impossible, you'd plant your foot to the floor and by the time it shifted down and started speeding up the overtaking lane was finished.

Mate of mine had a 1.6L model (Yaris or Echo) and when we used to go for drives around the mountains behind Brisbane she'd have to switch the air con off on steeper sections because it would start losing speed… lol.

It's largely a thing of the past now as more and more manufacturers add hybrid tech but it used to be a real issue for small cars.

  • The MG3 has rear drum brakes. I'll be nice if they had disc brakes. Cost cutting there

    • +2

its a tiny car, rear drums are fine.

    • +4

another person that thinks the difference between rear drums and discs on a commuter car is critical….
you wouldn't know the difference driving it!

      • Yeah but we're talking 2024/25 and not the 80s. They could have included it!

        • +8

Half the people on the road don’t know if their car is FWD or RWD.

        • +2

Sounds like the wisdom of a xxxxxxxxxxxxx
The 2005 toyota echo I sometimes drive has rear drums… and you…you… wouldn't notice the difference. Neither do I.
The ducati I sometimes ride has 3 discs…. and I would notice the difference if it had drums

Are you disappointed your current vehicle hasn't got wireless camshaft sensors?
Are you disappointed your shoes don't have kevlar soles?
Are you disappointed your glasses don't have titanium frames?

FFS bill…. horses for courses! It's so brainless fashionista/ diana fisher to bang on about something that makes an insignificant difference, particularly when the product is designed around economy.

As smartzz brings up… do you recognise the difference between FWD and RWD? Does your commuter have AWD?
