It’s your money and your choice.

These days lot of families are struggling and for them buying a brand new car for $22k driveway, under warranty for many years to come would be big deal.

      • +5

Maybe struggling families shouldn’t be looking at a new car at all.

        • +1

Right? That appeal to the poors when you are discussing a new car is a let them eat cake moment.

          • +2

@Ademos: Brand new cars are a bad financial decision for most people, not just people struggling financially.

  • +5

For people who are concerned about its safety, I’m witness of an accident where this car was taking a U-turn and a Cole’s delivery truck hit her. All 4 occupants including 3 children on backseat were out totally unharmed. Only doors of that side were damaged.

I know some people just hate made in China cars but you need to do more research before posting baseless claims.

    • I presume they were hit side on, and not front on?

You want based claims? Well here's the ANCAP summary. 10 / 16 in frontal impact…
      https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/mg/zs/2cd523

MG only just released their first car to reach 5 stars(!), the MG4.

    • -1

I don't hate the actual cars, it's more a moral decision than a style/price/practicality one. And I have no doubt they will get better from here on. But they can literally kiss my entire (profanity).

  • +3

You couldn't give me an MG. There is no such thing as a 'bargain MG'.

  • +6

The best thing about these cars are the price, not only do they sucker in all the "poor pay twice" buyers for a new car, it helps force more manufacturers to lower prices to compete to win back their potential buyers.

The reason is say this is I am buying nothing but 1999 Ford AU Falcons

    • +4

That's another area. Not many ppl like to drive big thirsty cars and most used are treated like trash before they sell due to its durability. They were like $30K+ new. You can't beat the Falcon IMO. I have the Barra and they just churn through the kms without breaking a sweat. Made by Aussies for Aussie conditions.

    • +1

I find the BAs and BFs to be fine choices…. though I recently upgraded to the FG model, to benefit from the economy of a 6 speed box.
      Spares seem very cheap….

      • Great choice! Make sure you get an external tranny cooler to protect the ZF milkshake. But I'm not intelligent enough 🤣

      • +1

They were taxi cars so they have a massive aftermarket, you'll be able to drive one until you pass away

  • +3

Why not just pick up a 2 year old second hand one for 5k

    • +1

      This.

    • +3

Could you name one? One example please?

      • -2

The ones that lasted that long are on marketplace, asking price 10k and what they sell for is not far off 7500$ for a 2021 😆 my 15 year old swift would get around that..

  • +3

I had one as a rental as well, the auto was a bit clunky.

For the price, and considering a 10 yr warranty I do think this is a good deal that could suit some people. Not saying it's as good as Hyundai etc.. but it is acceptable for A to B driving.

    • You can't compare rental cars lol. They kill it. I had a $40K rental Kia and the transmission clunked like no tomorrow @ 23000kns. I'm sure it's not like that treated well lol

      • -1

I can only imagine how bad those things get thrashed….

  • -1

Cheap but to buy expensive log book services, and expensive fuel.

  • +3

These will get under 20k by year end. Maybe even 18k.
There’s about 6000 of them sitting at port and like another 4000 coming.

  • +11

The degree of stupidity displayed by all those people saying don’t buy this is amusing.

Show me an SUV that’s passed ANCAP and selling at $22000 drive away, or shut your **** up.

    • +4

Everyone is happy to whinge but all I'm hearing are crickets when asking for alternatives… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Honestly would love to hear an alternative for a brand new compact SUV!

    • +3

      +10 year warranty

    • +1

Because they are all wallstreetbets options billionaires with their own private island.

Or dreaming they are….. while tapping away at the computer in their bedsit.

    • +4

Arguably Australia is blessed by these cheap Chinese car opportunities. The rest of the west has practically blocked them out with huge tariffs - that might be good for their local car making industries, but is bad for consumers.

    • People have just run out of negs by this point for this CCCP CRAP CAR .
Build quality is atrocious , but if you can’t afford anything better buy a couple of year old one for a quarter of the price , should still have plenty of warranty , right ?

      • Here's links to reviews, I'm not saying it's a high quality car but perhaps atrocious is too strong a word compared to professional reviewer sentiment. As a rental it was fine.

      • Soviet Union collapsed three decades ago, how are they still making cars?

  • Drove one as a hire car for a whole week. Its definitely a POS car, but at 22K, its very enticing.

  • There is a completely new model just about to be released, and the ZST is an update in front of this.
The ZS model on offer, is effectively two models old, so kind of like a new old car. Also auto is a 4 speed which sounds like a 90's design.
Still $21990 is cheap with the warranty.

  • +3

Chery Tiggo 4 launching soon. Rumoured price is around $24K.

    • If happy to spend bit more, that's probably the better option. It's going to sell very well at that price.

  • I recently drove the mg5 as a rental and it was a pleasant drive. I'd consider buying the mg5 if it was this price. No android auto on this ZS it seems, which is a bit strange given that it has apple carplay

    • +1

Mg5 has 0 star ancap though

      • Ouch. Glad I didn't crash

  • I haven't been in the market for a car for a while, however my MIL recently was shopping for new cars and asked for advice. I recommended grabbing one of these cheaper brands but she went with a mazda cx 30. Despite it costing more and having less warranty, her reasoning was basically "it's a mazda".

Anyway, she's had to take the car back now about 4-5 times trying to fix issues. It's mostly just related to some weird issue with the seat, but she whole heartedly regrets her decision and is even contemplating getting legal advice (not sure what she thinks she can achieve with that). I'd love to rub it in but I value my marriage so I'll just post this here instead.

Please downvote this comment as it offers no relevant information in relation to this deal.

Mazdaz edging out toyota in reliability indexes worldwide. Would you like to know where mg sits? What have we learned about anecdote?

    • +1

your MIL is not a MILF?
      ahem

    • My rellos have a 2016 model Mazda CX-5. The auto wipers failed due to an electrical issue and were just never able to be fixed, the parking sensors are broken and constantly beep with nothing there and now something has failed with the exhaust causing an awful metal vibrating noise that can be heard inside the car at high RPM. Apparently the exhaust isn't worth fixing anymore considering the age of the car and the cost involved so now they're just driving it until it dies.

Credit where credit is due because the interior has held up incredibly well, but the rest of the car is just slowly falling apart.

All anecdotal of course and I'm sure there are heaps of happy Mazda owners, but my rellos would have been better off with an MG and a 10 year warranty.

      • -1

Ive heard anecdotally that the MG dealerships have fobbed off legit issues even though they should fall under warranty. So 10 year warranty may not count for much if they have bad after sales support… I guess you'll never know until you buy one and maybe you wont have any issues. Maybe it was just a particular bad dealer, gotta do more research i guess.

  • I've driven these as a hire car a few times. They are reasonable. I wouldn't mind owning one if they came in a bigger size.

    • +1

      Reasonable compared to what?

  • Mg 5 is about $24 k

What's the main difference. Does MG5 mean newer

  • +1

it is that cheap for a reason. if you just want a car to get from point A to B and do not care much about safety then this is the car for you

  • +1

I've been waiting for byd to hit $20-25k

    • High KM Atto 3 with 100k km odometer is selling at 28k. Won’t be awhile brand new.

  • Question. With these Chinese EV companies, are data from the cars collected and stored in data centers?

    • +1

Always assume this is the case for anything with connectivity. Someone is hoovering up your data. And most especially Chinese brands due to the inseperable nature of state<->business in China.

      • +1

There are many videos on Youtube on how to remove the simcards from new cars if you want your privacy respected.

        • Wonder if they also have WiFi. Where there is a nefarious way, it'll be done.

        • +1

Will this remove certain features from the car?

    • Of course

    • most likely yes

same with German, Japanese, US, etc cars

      https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/article…

      • There is a big difference. In developed democracies, companies are allowed to challenge the govt in court on data privacy. Unfortunately, China hasn’t come to this stage yet.

    • -1

Don't go anything to piss off the CCP or they will probably kill your car remotely. the tech is there.

  • +1

Just to balance this thread a little. This "old fossil" drives a 2021 mg zst (turbo 1.3, 6 speed auto) and I absolutely love it. Innumerable trips to Brisbane and Sydney on freeway (from MNC) and it eats them up. Totally different car to the 1.5. That is all.

    • +1

yep - the Excite is where the ZST becomes nice

does well in the mountains around Namadgi as well

  • +1

Not gonna lie, I thought this was another Gunpla deal until I saw the thumbnail.

  • No , they are immediately broadcast Truman show style to some test villages in xinbxang , don’t be surprised if you get some fan mail telling you your riding the clutch .

  • I drive an mg4 and love it. 🥰

    • as well as any 3-series

  • +1

I understand that these commonly develop weird electrical problems. Of course it has a 10 years warranty, which helps somewhat.

As a plus, the 1.5L engine output isn’t as bad as it sounds, for a city roundabout. But it’s not amazing either.

The interior is very cheap, but the fake leather is fairly hard wearing.

  • +1

10 year warranty because they won't be around that long for you to claim on it.

    • +2

  • -5

My in-laws just had their 9 month old one fail on the side of the road with a transmission fault. Waiting to be looked at next week by MG. You'd expect a car to last a few years before a transmission failure! Even the German made cars go past the 3 year mark.

Spend a bit more money and get something can last a little longer. 10yr warranty is the saving grace.

    • +4

      VW has entered the chat

    • +4

$160K German cars aren't immune to catastrophic failures either.

    • +3

Seen many older CVT nissans lately?

    • +3

It happens. My parents just had a transmsission fault in their 14 month old Hyundai Tuscon. Needs to be replaced. Expect more for a $50k car.

  • +1

Insane value if you can look past the anti-Chinese bias. We're lucky to take advantage of these prices, EU/US get cockblocked because their industries can't compete.

    • Nothing to do with anti-China and acting like a victim. Even in China these cars from SAIC(MG etc) are crap. You would rather invest in a BYD EV than one of these. There is a reason why the price is dropping so rapidly, because they are getting dumped on our market.

      • +1

Cool, can you show me a better car at the same price with 10 years warranty?

      • Even the Chinese don't buy MG.
Try to stick with GWM and BYD is a much safer option.

  • This or Kia Picanto?

    • +1

This one over the Kia Picanto. The Kia might be better built and more fuel efficient but for the same price, this one has more space and more importantly, more safer in case of accidents. I have a small Suzuki Celerio and every time I have to go on a long drive, I borrow my daughter's ASX.

  • +1

Drove the missus new MG ZS EV Excite from Sunny Coast to Rockhampton a few days ago. Really impressed with it!
But before we left we got the windows tinted and the loaner car was a petrol MG3. I didn't personally drive it but the wifey said the lag was so bad when accelerating. Massive difference between the two.

  • For this price I would rather buy one of the used EV versions of this car for $23k.

Both will depreciate and will be difficult to sell years down the line anyway. If you're going to drive a PoS may as well do it with little running costs as possible.

  • +1

Weird! My post stating the MG is owned by SAIC, which is Chinese state owned disappeared.

Anyway I have driven these cars as a rentals and the difference between them and a cheap Korean/Japanese car in terms of engineering is easy tell. Chinese brand ICE cars still have a long away to go in terms of being comparable to brands from the other two countries at a similar price point.

  • Coffins are expensive these days, 22k sounds like a bit of a rip off
