  • Just curious on how does 13 week translate to $1000 benefits?

    • +2

We pay about $550 a month for cover for a family. so 13 weeks free is $1700 or so of benefit to us compared to doing nothing.

      • Wow that's high. We're paying only the min $200 a month…

  • I have a youth discount with Medibank, will I lose that if I transfer….?

"Frank has been offering simple health insurance since 2009. We’re part of GMHBA, a well-respected not-for-profit health insurer with over 80 years of experience (they’ve been around since 1934)." I'm currently with Frank Health Insurance and they are part of GMHBA - Anyone know if churning will work?

FYI Frank are offering the exact same deal. "6 weeks free + skip 2 & 6 month waits on extras when joining on combined cover by 20 September*
*For new members who have not been a member during the last 12 months, joining on combined hospital and extras cover, paying by direct debit. Must pay first month to receive six weeks free. Other waits (including hospital waits), annual and sub limits apply. Extras claims made with a previous fund count towards annual limits. Not available with any other offer or Frank OVHC. Offer ends 20 September 2024."

    "
Great news, we'll be covering 7 weeks of your premium payments.

From 30 September 2024, COVID-19 savings will be returned via a premium contribution for eligible active resident policies.

To be eligible for this payment, your Frank private health insurance resident policy needs to be active on 25 September 2024 and remain active on 30 September 2024."

Frank have slightly better extras benefits

      • Any specific examples re extras advantage?

        What about customer service?
After recently coming from the disgrace that is Bupa, I now call up the customer service line and pretended I was an existing customer…GMHBA answered straight away. Mind blown!

But GMHBA is about 1/3 more expensive than some of the others.. so I guess you divide the free benefit by 1/3 to be equivalent.

Also, my partner does pilates at the physio (claimed under physio with previous insurers), but GMHBA said it might not be claimable with them (confirming Monday).

So will check out Frank. Might send you a PM..

      • Hey Eastern are you signing up for Frank or Gmbha?

        • Frank is better for me after reviewing policy documents

          • @easternculture: Yes, seems the same for me at the moment. Slighly cheaper and no fees for credit card. Win win

    • Thanks for your comment. I joined Frank two weeks ago and will be active until next month to get 6 weeks free. From T&C, it seems that I am eligible for extra 7 weeks free. Am I right?

  • Anyone ever paused their current health fund - say for 3 months to take advantage of these offers and then cancel and unpause

    • Think you can only pause a policy if you're physically out of the country for the entire time

  • Do you get the 6 weeks only if you pay monthly or can I just pay yearly and still get it?

  • Do we just need to sign up to the 6 weeks free and automatically get the 7 weeks free COVID benefit? Where on their website does it say we need to sign up by 20th Sept. Isn't the eligibility to get the 7 weeks free is that you need to have a policy by 25th Sept?

    • +4

20th september for 6 wks free.
Active membership between 25th and 30th September for additional 7 wks free.

  • Do they offer rewards, such as discount gift cards?

  • I just switched from Bupa to Medibank for their 6 weeks free promotion in late August, and I remember the CS person said there is a 21 day cooling-off. If I sign up for this, should I tell Medibank that I have changed my mind so they would refund the fees that I have already paid?

Thanks for anyone who can share some advice. First time churning around.

    • you can do that, but you wont be elegible for medibank promotion for a year

  • very interested in this deal, and if someone could clarify please - i think their dental is different from what i am used to from medibank and bupa - don't get "free" clean and scale, and have to pay out of pocket.

  • Any experiences with this mob in terms of service etc?

    • Indeed. It’s not rated as amazing on choices i remember correctly

    • +1

Go with frank. Better extra benefits and same 7 week covid benefit

      • Do you know if Frank allows the 6 weeks free to stack up as well?

      • I'll check them out thanks

  • Do you need to have the extras to be eligible for all this? Dont really need/use extras.

    • I’ve got the same question. Looks like you might need to buy extras? If that’s the case I’m out

      • +3

        Why?
You dont go to the dentist? They pay approx $200 for scale/clean, examination and fluoride which is generous.
Do you wear sunnies? Thats another $250 to claim plus a bonus $150 if you use their optical centres.
Do you go to the gym? Get your GP to fill the form and say your over recommended BMI and claim some of the cost on health management.

Thats over $600 worth for one month extra premium of approx $60

        • How does the gym benefit work if you're churning every couple of months? Are you just using this form anytime you cycle onto GMHBA?

          • +1

@txb: For me, i pay my yearly crunch membership fee then claim it on PHI

        • This is just straight up misinformation. I suggest everyone does their own research

          • +2

@financialminimalism: No its not. Ive been churning for years. From insurers that renew on anniversary date, financial year and calender year and claim 3 times per year on limits for optical, dental, health management and massages.

You can even ask your dentist for a free whitening kit as health funds pay $40 to $60 per arch for teeth whitening , you could also ask for a mouth guard if you play sports and depending on dentist, its usually free or close to free with the PHI rebate

And if you elect to go with frank (same offer as this deal), they offer $400 with orthotics on highest extras cover, and a few places in sydney will accept that as a payment for full orthotics .

With this deal you are paying one month "extra's" premium for total 15 weeks and you are getting no waiting period on usual 2/6 months.

Ive been churning for years so pretty much know all the ins, outs, loopholes and shortcuts

        • Seems like GMHBA extras do not cover dental x-rays, so you would be out of pocket for that?
Coming from Medibank/HCF/Bupa dental was free, I'm just weighing up whether the GMHBA extras set $ benefit is worth it.

        • Interested! I haven't done the gym benefit before! Which providers offer this?

    • Looks like you do need to buy extra unfortunately. I’m out.

  • +1

Anyone knows which cover is advisable if they're on the public waiting list for laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?

It's been over 4 months for them and wait period could be more than 8 months.

    • Sounds like you should check with the health fund

    • As long as you go on the same comparable or higher hopital cover, the serving periods transfer when they recieve your transfer certificate from new fund

    • If you're going public, insurance doesn't matter.
If you want to go private but aren't already covered for the particular procedure, 12-month waiting period will apply due to it being a pre-existing condition if you sign up to a policy that covers it now.

  • How long does it take to receive the Welcome email. I signed up with the start date as 19th Sept. Is that why I haven't got it yet?

    • Usually takes up to 5 buisness days

      • Believe people mentioned here about receiving welcome email upon signing up mentioning about the 7 weeks free as part of Covid deal

  • I had extras with GMHBA six months ago. I wonder if I would be eligible as a new member. Does anyone know if there is a 12-month rule?

    • You would be eligible for the 7 weeks covid but possibly not the free 6 wks signup bonus

For new members joining on combined hospital and extras cover and paying by direct debit, who have not been a GMHBA member in the last 12 months

      • Thanks!

  • What is the bonus Qantas points deal? Is that still active?

  • Can I start my policy in oct 1st ? To get both and 7 weeks offer?

    • +1

You policy must be active between 25 and 30 september to get 7 weeks

  • Any good for WA residents? Hospital and extras

  • We need to switch before 25th Sept to get this offer?

    • Who is eligible for the 7-week contribution payment in 2024?
To qualify for the upcoming return of COVID-19 claims savings, GMHBA members need to hold an active private health insurance policy on 25 September 2024 and remain active on 30 September 2024

    • You also need to sign up before 20th to get the 6 weeks bonus offer

  • which combo is everyone getting?
    might change over from HCF
nice that the waiting period waived

    • With those free weeks, ill be getting at least bronze cover and highest extras

      • was thinking along the same line, may as well max it

  • +1

I was like god damn I need to sign up with GMHBA… only to realise I am already with them now! Wow!

If I earn 240k a year should I get this?
Pay calc says I’ll pay 4k less tax if i have it

    • +3

You making 240k and dont have health insurance???

      • -1

only recently started earning that much

        • +1

it's worth having insurance after around 90k. So yes, you should do it obviously

          • @nomekop: thanks ill sign up now, hopefully get my free 13 weeks

      • +7

You're only just making $240k? One of the poorer Ozbargainers

    • +1

did you go from under 90k to 240k in like a year?

      • moved from a full time pay role to a contract based role paying day rate

    • Yes. Get cover immediately and see an accountant next financial year to learn more about this stuff (or just do your research). Just get the lowest cover unless you’re genuinely gonna use anything extra. Get it today

  • Do they have the ultimate cover like bupa has?

  • Will this automatically stack up 13 week free or we have to call or drop mail to them?

    • Auto it looks like. One is a sign on benefit, the other is a service benefit to all members. That’s the only reason it stacks is because they both aren’t “offers”

  • -1

I joined NIB and have to be active on the 25th to be eligible for their offer, which means will miss out on joining by the 20th.

    • whats their offer

      • -1

6 weeks it was but their current offer is 8 weeks.

    • +1

      Where are you reading 20th?

It says "To qualify for the upcoming return of COVID-19 claims savings, GMHBA members need to hold an active private health insurance policy on 25 September 2024 and remain active on 30 September 2024." for me. So by signing up on the 24th you should be good?

Edit: nvm the 6 weeks free offer ends on the 20th!

  • Thanks OP.

I just need to sign up from sign up deal (6 weeks) and this COVID 7 week deal automatically stacks? Or do I have to do anything?

It's too good deal and don't want to mess up.

  • +1

Anyone worked out a sweet price point for cover? Thinking bronze hospital but not sure what level of extras is best

  • I'm already on GMHBA hospital only policy.

Is that covered at all or is it for new customers only?

And need to change to hospital and extras?

I joined AHM a few months back for the extras coverage.

  • So if I start my cover immediately and get them to cancel my other insurance, is the other insurance obliged to refund any advance paid? I am currently paid up til 4-Oct-2024 on a monthly Direct debit.

    • I'm not sure about obliged - but I've definitely had advanced payments refunded from Medibank in the past when I switched away.

  • Anyone know how this would work if you pay 'half-yearly' premiums? You'd pay the HY Premium then 13 weeks free unitl the next billing cycle? are you just better off just paying monthly?

Also, am i understanding right, once you pay the first 4 weeks worth of premium, you then dont get billed for the next 13 weeks?

And do you 'waiting periods' completed transfer to GMHBA?

  • I am super confused. How does this work? I am right now with Medibank. Let's say I switch today to gmhba. Do I get 13 weeks free after I have paid 4 weeks? Could you someone help to explain this to me?

  • GMBHA seem more expensive overall than Medibank

  • Does it have to be direct debit for an yearly payment or can I use credit card?

    • You can use a credit card but you lose a 2% discount. That was for a weekly payment at least, don't know about yearly.

      • The trick is to do direct debit and then prepay the month. Seems to avoid the 2%.

  • was with BUPA for 5 years and just joined Medibank on 27/AUG with 4 WEEKS offer post cooling off period.

Claimed $10 for daughter’s 5 min dental checkup. I think MEDIBANK cooling off period is not applicable any more if I want to join this offer?

  • Been with GMHBA for 14 years. Fantastic non-profit health insurance agency. Always had excellent customer service from them when I've called and their rates are very reasonable.

    • I'm getting like $150+ more per month on the GMHBA quote vs what I pay with Medibank. Where does the reasonable rate come in?

      • It was cheaper for mine vs rest when I last checked but results may vary I guess

  • I'm likely to need surgery in a couple of months on my shoulder. Not seeing the specialist until November.

If I change providers for an existing issue am I still covered?

    • Assuming it's covered under your existing policy (and waiting periods served), it will continue to be covered as long as it's still covered under your new policy.
