same I ordered today around midday still shows in progress too but the Sim is already working

    • Where do you check your status?

I'm not even planning to use it.

      • JB mobile app. Use your Telstra login

  • +1

Just visited local JB store and ordered the Pro XL Obsidian 128GB.

As mentioned previously by posters, confirmed with the JB rep, cancellation is capped at $800 and collect $350 voucher with device.

All in all a cracking deal. Thanks @BarginGrabber

  • +1

A question, my order is still in progress 5 hours later on.

Anything I can do to escalate it?

    • No.

  • For those worried about risking having to pay back $1700, worst case just cancel and return the phone (keep it sealed).

Technically is there anything wrong with cancelling the Telstra plan the day after signing up? The phone has already been paid for.

    • I don’t see any reason why can’t you cancel now, given that phone and plan are separate

      • +2

Any brave soul gonna cancel before pickup?

        • I'm not sure I see the point of this as haven't you already paid for the first month anyway?

  • +1

After agonising over whether I need to upgrade from the P7P and whether to get the 9 Pro XL or the 9 Pro, I decided to go with this deal @ JB's at Osborne park. It's the Oz B way right?

    Easy process, a few points:

    • Saw (on screen) that the contributing gift card off the phone was $800, questioned it and the JB guy said that it was to match the cancellation fee but that it was definitely a $1700 bonus off
    • He asked if I had any questions and I asked about cancellation and he did the calculation based off $800 as the max payout fee
    • I got the new numbered sim but it was showing as "in progress" on screen, even though the sim was activated (he tried in my phone). So I'll need to go back and finish the pre-order
    • Played with the phone in store. I like the straight edges and flat BRIGHT screen. Still a big bigger than what I was after

    Killer deal! Thanks BG!

    • Awesome, good to see they have got phones in store to look at. I'm off to Malaga very soon to sign up as well.

      • Yeah, had the fold as well. I signed up before even playing with the XL. Just assumed it wouldn't be there.

    • I saw them on display in Melbourne too.

  • Does pro xl come with a case?

    • Nope

    • Nope.

I literally just got one off progadgets eBay. Same case as all my previous Pixels, Spigen Rugged Armour.

  • Well that was a real let down. Went into JB tonight to sign up and Telstra's systems decided to crap themselves. They wouldn't accept any card details I put in… tried 4 different cards from 3 different banks. Then another employee mentioned that he couldn't even get the system to accept his customer's ID, let alone proceed to payment.

I'll have to try again tomorrow.

    Hi OzBargainers,

If I have to buy pixel 9 pro xl 256 gb this via JB hifi telstra, how much I will be spending from my packet?

149$ + 99$/ monthly or I will be charged 1849$ first and get refund of 1700?

    • +2

As mentioned previously you will only be charged $149 +$99, the $1700 discount will be applied straightaway when you pay at the counter. I pre-ordered mine this morning at JB

    • +2

For the 256gb xl you'll pay $297 for the phone + $99 for the plan

You'll walk out of the shop having spent $396

    • +4

      Pixel 9 Pro XL (256GB): (1997 – 1700) + 99 + (23/24) *800 = $1162.66 (and you get a $350 JB GC)

So, day 1 of visting JB, you will pay $396.

    • If you cancel the 24 months plan, you'll be charged $766.67 from Telstra too.

If you don't cancel, there is $99 on-going monthly charge.

    • I think it will only have an impact as long as you are unemployed and do not have a steady income.

    • Doesnt matter if you have 1M in the bank. Unemployed to creditors = risk

      • this ^

I have a business and since I don't pay myself a salary so I still considered a risk. People with payslip is much preferred by banks in general

  • Hi everyone,
I just wanted to know, if we cancel the Telstra plan on the same or the next day, is it possible to save some money from $99?
(As last time I signed up with Harvey Norman for Pixel 7 Pro deal and cancelled the sim plan the very next day and Optus charged me nothing for the plan charges). TIA

    • +1

No They activate the SIM straight away when you appy for the pre-order

  • -1

Where is it written about $147.00 amount(like how do you arrive at that figure), plus why not get 1tb version

    • +1

You need to pay the price of the phone minus $1700 for 1tb that's $847 out of pocket.

  • When you port your number in do you have to bring the number and reply a SMS?

    • yes, you need SMS verification. I had to do this even with a new number.

      • Just lost my sim yesterday. Is it possible to transfer the number without sms verification?

        • It will be tricky. Your best bet would be to try get a replacement SIM, or get a new number.

  • Porting from a Telstra wholesaler number (aldi Woolworth mobile) is OK?

    • Yes that is fine. Only Telstra, Boost or JB/Good Guys are exempt.

  • Update - still haven’t progressed from “in progress” since Wednesday early arvo, getting a bit concerned now

The staff did say that since I have signed up, I’ll still be eligible for the promo regardless whenever Telstra decides to make it “completed”

    • As in the Sim hasn't been activated yet?

      • Yup, that’s correct

JB can’t put through the last part of the order if Telstra hasn’t confirmed it

    • I wonder if you are blacklist for taking advantage of these deals too often?

I went in to sign up, instantly ported over and activated.

      • If that’s the case, why would Telstra charge me $99 from my bank account (maybe that explains why it’s still showing as pending on my credit card)

        • They can always refund you though. More likely just a system issue. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

          • @aveeno bb: Let’s hope it’s just system issue, but looking at others reporting back saying they were successful ://

Tbf, I have signed up and cancelled many plans in the past and quite a few more recently - maybe around 7-8 already

            • +1

@BargainsGrabber: As per my post last night above, Telstra were having system issues and rejected 4 different bank cards, so I couldn't complete signup at all. I am going back this afternoon to try again.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15608448/redir

Telstra's systems are shite on a good day it seems.

              • @bonezAU: I’m tempted to just head into a different JB store to sign up again - seeing if this time round will be approved but don’t really want to have 2 orders being in progress if it turns out shit too

                • @BargainsGrabber: Hang in there mate. Mine went through this morning. The service is now showing on the JB app.

              • @bonezAU: Had the same issue yesterday, and I just came back from JB again today. Don't bother, issue is still there.

                • @chewkl: Ah how annoying. I'll give the store a call when I finish work before I drive there to see if it's still an issue. Thx for letting me know.

                • @chewkl: Signed up to a new number? Or porting? Just wondering if it has an impact which rout you choose.

Mine is still in progress and I requested a new number.

    • Same boat here. Mines "in progress". JB rep told me it's been happening a lot. Another couple of people turned up when I did and 1 of their 3 Sims got activated.

I was assured that because I'd placed the order it would be valid for whenever it's processed. Only annoying thing is I've got to go back and finish the order and technically I haven't pre-ordered the phone yet. Either way.

The JB rep also confirmed what has been said here LOTS but I'll say it again because I was confused. Only need to pay back $800.

      • I do wonder if it’s by sequence or at random lol

        Still waiting ahaha

        • I signed up today at around 1pm and was stuck in progress. Just got a completion confirmation at 7pm so looks like they're coming through!

        • +1

Mine processed late last night. I'd agree with the others saying this is a telstra issue.

  • -1

Anyone tried signing up via chat?

  • -2

When do we get the giftcard?

    • +7

If you're gonna drop $1k on this deal, then at least read all the comments lol

    • +1

      On pick up.

    • Some reported they have received it when they paid the remaining balance upon sign up, some have been told to come back when the phone is released

      • +2

Yeah, whoever received the $350 must have been a mistake by a staff member.

        • Not a mistake. I'm one of those who got the $350 immediately. The salesperson checked on his computer and it said that the voucher could be supplied on pickup OR at sign up.

          • @wombat1955: Fair enough, it must be an internal rule to tell the customer to pick up with the phone to prevent fraud or whatever the excuse is.

          • @wombat1955: or provided at time of purchase.

            All good.

This is such a good deal so I don't mind waiting until 22/8

  • Just paid for my pixel 9 pro xl.

    Wow, deal of the year🤑🤑🤑

  • -8

Guys, have a read of this

    https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

    Voucher
You may be eligible to receive a voucher purchase of goods from JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys stores. It's not transferable or redeemable for cash (including any unused part). If you cancel, recontract or move to an ineligible plan then you'll need to pay a Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee pro-rated against the remaining months on your Plan in addition to any Early Termination Charges set out in the above table and accessory payments

    • Read the 7 pages of comments. Has been addressed multiple times.

    • I believe this is the $800 that gets pro-rata'd that people are paying off. As far as Telstra systems can see they are providing a $800 voucher or it's capped at $800. JB giving the extra $900 of value to make the $1700 total off. But cancelling early means that you have to pay back 800*23/24 (because 1 of the 24 months you have already paid the monthly fee in full.

      • -1

Aside from the possibility of using an old CIS referencing $800 maximum voucher repayment fee

The T & C's on JB Hi-Fi of the $1700 reads that the repayment cost will be $1629.16

Given that "you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra"
["JB Hi-Fi Voucher"] in the Telstra Terms and Conditions

If this link did not exist, then it wouldn't matter; however it does, some people have been shown it and others have not, a salesperson that doesn't know this won't help you when you try to cancel it and they pull up the JB Hi-Fi and Telstra Service Terms

        https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

6.2 If you received a [JB Hi-Fi Voucher] when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel
that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding
amounts for the [JB Hi-Fi Voucher] you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher
        Repayment Fee).
6.3 The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your
Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:
        (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received

        = 1629.16

I think a lot of people are just ignoring the "Telstra Standard Terms JB Hi-Fi Mobile Upfront Service Terms" and hoping for the best

        • No a lot of us aren’t ignoring as that’s not true

As mentioned many times, the “voucher” isn’t the same as voucher repayment fee. To backed my statement, I’ve even confirmed with an employee that JB are 100% aware of this loophole, it’s just Telstra cbf

          • @BargainsGrabber: By "voucher"
On the JB Hi-Fi Pixel page, in light grey writing under the $1700 off promo, it states the $1700 off the purchase price IS TO BE referred to as the "JB HiFi Voucher" in the Telstra Terms and Conditions. It goes on to say "you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee"

This therefore refers to the "Voucher Repayment Fee" seen in 6.2 and 6.3 on the above Telstra Standard Terms JB Hi-Fi Mobile Upfront Service Terms

            Where am I going wrong?

            • +1

@Joysky: Sigh, this will be hard to explain to you

While the clause on the pixel page says that, there are 2 parts in the CIS: Voucher and Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee

Even though the page says this: the “$1700 off the purchase price is to be referred to as the "JB HiFi Voucher", this never gets updated on the actual CIS, rather it still reads as $800 - as this is the day to day without any promos etc

The actual document that you will be signing is the “Review your order”, and at any point if you don’t agree, you don’t have to sign it

If you read further down that same document, you can see that it says $800 gift card but we all know that’s not true as we’ll be receiving $1700 instead - this won’t be reflected back to Telstra as you have already signed the document

The 7 pages of comments in this deal can be backed up too and many more from the recent deals like the iPads, iPhones, Flip6/Fold6 etc

              • @BargainsGrabber: So we are relying on an out of date CIS rather then the conditions of this promo, if that's the case, I'm all for it

                • @Joysky: You can always say no at any point before you legally print your signature on the review your order :)

            • @Joysky:

              Where am I going wrong?

The fact that everything you are saying is not in the contact that people are signing when they buy this phone.

        • +1

Logically what you are saying makes sense, but practically this is not the case. When I login to JB hifi plan portal or App, its showing only $800 as Maximum Voucher Payment fee. Same is shown on the contract as well. But later if JB charges $1,629.16, will be hard for us to deny that as what you posted legally and logically makes sense i.e. $800 or so voucher repayment fee to Telstra and balance for JB

          • @OZBsince2018: Eh, there is still an argument to be made. The JB terms say you will be required to repay the pro rata balance of the voucher known as a "Voucher Repayment Fee". The document also says that this applies in addition to the other documents (right near the top I think). The other document (CIS) says that the maximum the Voucher Repayment Fee can be is $800. If they want the JB component to apply separately, they need to specify that there are different parts to the voucher and how that affects voucher repayments, not just tell you about it after the fact. As of now there is one term used in a couple places (Voucher Repayment Fee) that has been capped in the CIS.

            • @EBC: Read Clause 6.2 in the below new terms and condition document which JB has added recently which is in addition to the General Terms and relevant Critical Information Summary. It clearly defines the Voucher Repayment Fee as:

"If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the “Voucher Repayment Fee”).

Not arguing as I also already subscribed this deal, but just saying that in case JB charges higher Voucher Repayment Fee, they won’t be wrong if you read both CIS and this document together. Lets hope for the best though.

              https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

              • +1

@OZBsince2018: I have read that section, but what I am saying is that they are defining the voucher repayment fee without specifying that the CIS stated maximum of $800 does not apply to this definition. The way I read it (admittedly, generous to myself) is that the JB defined voucher repayment fee is capped at $800 by the CIS since the JB document applies in addition to the CIS and terms and conditions.

If you combine all documents into one for simplicity you have:

                1. Pro rata definition of the voucher repayment fee
                2. Statement saying the maximum fee is $800

From a contractual obligation perspective they have put themselves in a spot where the $800 max fee overrides the calculation definition, unless the fee is <$800.

Also not arguing, just discussing the way I read it.

Fingers crossed it isn't a fight either way.

              • +1

@OZBsince2018: That updated document you linked still mentions specifically the "base voucher" at 6.3.

My rep specifically told me word-for-word that the 'base voucher' IS $800 regardless of the voucher the customer actually receives. $800 is paid to them by Telstra and JB fund the remainder, but $800 is the base voucher and Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee, and that is what must be repaid on cancellation, pro-rated against the months you stay. Highlighted it in blue on my paper and all.

She told me the voucher amount in the CIS can change at will depending on the promo and doesn't need to be accurate, but the Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee which you are on the hook for is a solid $800 figure that doesn't change with the promo of the day.

I guess we'll see what happens, but I'm pretty comfortable it'll only be $800 pro-rated.

    • +1

The staff at JB highlighted to me multiple times that the maximum ETC will be $800, which will be prorated.

      • +1

Same, but quite literally highlighted it with a blue highlighter pen on my printed contract.

If I didn't know about this 'loophole' before hand (which I did but played dumb), I would have definitely known as she was selling it to me. She pretty much coached me to do it without outright saying I should do it.

I asked how that works (still playing dumb to knowing about it in advance) and she said the value of the gift card can change (mentioned they are running 4 different promos at the moment all on the same $99 plan depending what device you want), but the Voucher Repayment Fee you need to pay Telstra is always $800 and never changes as that's the base (that is the key word, IYKYK) voucher Telstra pay to JB HiFi. Anything over $800 is a JB-lead promotion, not paid by Telstra. She made it very clear Telstra can only claw back their portion of the expenditure from the customer. Finished her spiel with "crazy stuff, but its a good plan, so I don't know why you'd want to cancel" and smiled at me cheekily.

Don't take my word for it as it's simply a theory, but my theory is that this isn't a loophole costing them money, because the wholesale cost of these to JB from Google is simply around $597 each for the 128GB model.
$800 from Telstra and $147 from the customer is guaranteed no matter what the customer does from there, so if they're adding a $350 gift card; they must be making at least $350 profit on each unit no matter what which brings it to break even on each unit. From there, they either make no more profit from the customer, or they earn however many months worth of plan fees the customer stays for.

        • -1

Has anyone tried asking Telstra chat what the cancellation cost would be?

Or do they need to process it to determine.

Also once you cancel can you pay it straight away?

  • +2

This is my take. The RRP is highly inflated, and it should really be about $1,200 everyday price.

So I pay $766.59 + $147 Google Pixel 9 Pro XL + $99 1 month fee. This is the worst case for Telstra, as they only keep you for 1 month, but recoups some cost from the $766.59 ETC. So Telstra pockets $865.59.

Telstra is obviously paying JB a portion of the $865.59. Considering JB is giving out $350 GC, let's say $350 minimum, to break even. JB also takes from us a minimum of $147 device fee. Any upsell goes to their pocket.

Then there's $500 left between Telstra and Google. Like how PS5 and Xbox sell at a loss, Google would be happy to take a small loss (with this deal, but making money off selling at retail), to lock more people into their ecosystem. By selling in large volume through subsidising the telcos, Google can lower the cost down. Any loss wouldn't really bother Google as they make lots of money elsewhere (Cloud, etc).

As a consumer, we get a good deal but will end up spending money on Google's services in the coming months and years. In the end, everyone wins.

Above is not a perfect analysis, but me trying to make sense of how deals like these make sense for everyone.

  • +4

For those who missed the 17 comments confirming the same thing already, I just signed up at JB and they showed me the CIS which specifically shows 800 as max cancellation fee.

Another thing I can confirm is GC on phone pick up, so I think the people getting it on sign up day were outliers.

Finally, I asked and was told that trade in offer does not stack.

    Hope this helps someone.

    • I got my $350 voucher immediately. The salesperson on the counter looked it up on his computer and was given both options, so I think it's up to the store/salespersons discretion.

      • Hi wombat1955, what is the expiry date of the voucher?

        • JB gift cards don’t have an expiry date
