  • I read where the Gemini AI is only free for the first year. After that it will be $20USD per month to subscribe to.
With this in pace I can now see Samsung and Apple starting to actually charge for the AI functionality on a subscription basis.

    • Samsung were always going to charge. They only made it free initially. Apple will probably join the charging game too.

      • +1

So that came out at the start of the year for Samsung so I expect we will see the ongoing costs in the new year. I hate to think how much Apple will charge if google are asking for $20usd a month.

  • Fyi if anyone wants to get the 9 pro fold. I went to JB Hurstville and one for the staff told me that it is possible to stack $1000 trade in deal + $1100 Telstra plan (this is different from the $1800 Telstra plan that cannot be stacked with other deal).

So if you are getting a 9 pro fold 256gb:

    $2697 - 1000 - (trade-in phone price) - 1100 + 99 (Telstra monthly payment) + 800 (max repayment fee to tesltra) = $1496 - (trade-in phone price)

Not exactly "cheap" but that should be the cheapest to get the fold version.

    • This is close to the price Fold6 was during preorder period..

  • Anyone use the $99 sim as a home internet using mobile phone hotspot? Fast enough if in 5g catchment?

    • Yes, this plan has an uncapped speed. Once you exhaust 300GB, it will be capped at 1.5Mbps.

  • Ordered mine last night. Now looking for the notification that it's ready for collection.

    • I was told it will be on 22 Aug, but fingers crossed they release earlier!

      • That's what I was told but they had a whole cupboard full of stock (they had forgotten to lock it when I was looking at the phone and looked concerned when they realised it was unlocked). Hopefully they release early but the fact that I couldn't just take it on the day even though it was right there makes me think not.

    • Just signed up at JB here in WA and almost got the device handed over. Supervisor/Manager came in and said oh! the release date is 22nd and we will send you the notification when ready to collect. I just smiled. Looks like they all have them in stock.

      • +1

they mostly do. However, sometimes there will be a secret release date.
I reckon once we receive an email saying the order is ready for collection on release date then that means it's there already and is waiting for collection

  • I ordered one.
    Thanks

  • Any one ordered more than one. Would you still get more than one Gift card?

  • +3

Cheers BG, im not one for flagships, but at this price it was a no brainer considering i was looking at the Pixel 8a!

  • So I went to the Brunswick branch and activated the service. But they were having difficulties and told me it may settle today or I would need to go in tomorrow to get the 1700 card deal. The system shows 'in-progress'.

Apparently it worked for someone before and it didn't for others.

    256 Hazel pro xl.

    • Do you have any past Boost prepaid accounts? The guys I dealt with initially chose the account with Boost accounts and had to go back and choose the right one (JB account I had previously).

      • I don’t think it matters, I checked my JB/Telstra/Boost apps and they all have the same personal account number

        • I currently have a boost number active. And have had many different ones in the past to let family use when they visited and no problems for me.

      • I've got the same issue but I've never had a Boost account before. Really think it's just luck of the draw.

      • This doesn’t matter. I have an active Boost prepaid service and got this plan on the same account. Didn’t have any issue and plan and new SIM was activated immediately. Signed up around 11am this morning at Marsden Park store.

      • I do. But she I said I wanted a new number and she said that's what she was going to tell me anyway.

I'm sure she did it correctly.

The Sims activated. Idk they said something with the 1700 credit so I had to come back tomorrow apparently.

        • Did your account ever more from In Progress? Did you get your credit yesterday?

    • When they got to the screen that asks for a payment method and they put your debit/credit card details in, did Telstra's system accept it?
I was in JB last night and it wouldn't accept any of my cards, they told me to come back tomorrow.

Planning to go back in a couple of hours and try again.

      • +1

        Yes mine was fine.

    • So I went in today (one day later). She gave me a call in the morning. I paid my deposit of 297. So far its cost 396.

Unfortunately, I wont be enjoying unboxing my phone on the 22nd as I have work and wouldn't be able to make it to the nominated store before closing. I haven't seen the hazel in person and am dying to see it.

  • Looks like it's gonna be identical to the last year HN Optus deal for pixel 8 - massive phone plan registration and early cancellation, BNIB phones finding their way to FB marketplace on Aug 22 - do you reckon we gonna face similar issues such as sold out stock/variant, especially for the unique colors (ie, not obsidian black)?

    Link for last year's fiasco - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/803565?page=29#comment

    • I bet no one of us will be able to sell it for more than $1200. Reason (1) everyone these days know about these offers and deals; and (2) Pixel phones loose price very quickly. Nevertheless, I am planning to keep it as a 2nd phone along with my main iPhone 14 Pro Max.

      • guess what .. webuyback has it listed for 1240 ..

    • Nah, JB has been doing this for years, I remember getting my S20 FE 5G from the exact same "get phone on new number and cancel" deal.

  • Good cancel deal however if your sim repayments are more than $33/m you are not better off cancelling.

    • +1

In OzB world, $33pm is a lot of money to pay for a mobile plan.

The way I look at it is, this plan makes sense to those that need a lot of data (300gb pm), or $99pm can be covered somehow by the company/business, etc. Otherwise, better off pay ETC and get onto one of the 12month plan deals.

    • $66*23=$1518, which is more than $766.59, so I don't see how you arrived at that conclusion.
Could you please explain, in case I missed something?

      • I was comparing to our deal

    • I think you made an error with this calc @HardlyNormal

Just roughly, if you keep it, you pay $99, but don't pay the $800, therefore (99*24 - 800)/24 = ~$66 / month. So if your sim repayments are more than $66/m then you're better off keeping it.

(these aren't perfect calcs, technically it should be 23 months, and the 800 should be ~$780something)

      • +1

no error, was comparing to our deal.
        JB DEAL - $1012 = phone
        HN DEAL - $69 x 24 = $1656 (sim) + $149 (ph) = $1805
        $1805 - $1012 = $793, /24 = $33/m

        • +1

Not sure why you're getting down voted. (I'll up vote to help even things out)

From what I've seen over a couple of recent threads, you've been a pretty good poster as far as associated vendors go.

          • +1

@Beyond: Yes, I was surprised too (it's a reply to my post, but I definitely didn't downvote them).
            Just a simple miscommunication.

            • @RubenM: Yeah, I noticed he responded to your comment after having come from the HN thread I suspect, which I'm guessing is why he forgot to elaborate on the post you originally responded to.

I hadn't thought you down voted him, figured if it was you, you'd probably have done a brief follow-up response calling him a twat for X reason(as well as the down-vote).

          • +1

            @Beyond: thanks mate.

  • Signed up, confirmed 800 max cancellation charge. Otherwise pro rata depending on when you do it.

  • Hey, just wondering. Is anyone aware that cancelling these plans affect your credit score? This is something a jb rep told me today. Not sure if this can be confirmed by other people here or not…
I'm more wondering if this is true, how much does it affect credit score and in reality.. how big is this 'hit' going to be to our credit scores if we are clearly going to cancel after first month?

    • Not really sure how cancelling a plan would ruin your credit score. If anything it would be the signing up, not the cancelling.

    • It might only affect your chances of getting another plan with Telstra for a certain time period (they can refuse new plan if you do frequent cancellations) but won’t affect your credit score.

    • The application may affect your credit score (though only if you already have had a lot of applications), the cancellation won't affect it though.

Why are people saying they have ordered online, when you need to do this process in store?

  • Ordered. Phone number ported. Only get an recipt, nothing else. Do people get an contract document for your phone plan?

    • You'll get all that stuff when you pick up the phone.

    • No, same. Got emails though haven't read yet. Also voucher on pickup was verbal. No worries :)

  • Does anyone know if this will come with a year of Google One AI premium plan?

This is from the Google store - "Eligible users can access even more powerful Gemini Advanced AI features with a year of Google One AI Premium plan on us, when you buy any new Pixel 9 Pro phone (exclusions apply).♢"

I already have a Google One 2TB plan.

    • I'm in the same situation, I think we just won't get any value out of the storage.

    • Does anyone know if this will come with a year of Google One AI premium plan?
Yes, we are supposed to get that in AU as far as I understand, I doubt you'll end up with 4TB of storage though.

  • How is this phone compared to S24 Ultra?

    • S24U if you value hardware
      Pixel if you value software

      • Pixel if want better camera.

    • If you play mobile games, S24 Ultra.

Pixel takes better photos overall. S24 Ultra is good but not the best (behind Pixel or iPhone).

  • can trade-in $350 be stacked on this

    • One person claims to have had luck, but officially no.

  • Something has been messed up with my Telstra ID for a really long time and they don't know how to fix it.
Just to get the My Boost or My Telstra apps to show any active services I had, they had to make me an authorised representative on my own account. (This was done by Telstra about a year ago).

This has something to do with JB not being able to sign me up on a Telstra contract, they got through all the screens until the very last payment screen and their system refused to accept 4 different bank cards.

Ended up getting the deal but signed up under my wife's name, went through fine and SIM card was active within about 1 minute.

    • Now that you mention that, I think I have the exact same problem with you :(

      • After this experience, I've given up on it. If I do ever become a Boost customer again then at least I know I can manage my service in the app, but their system is so messed up that they can't sign me up as a postpaid customer.

I've spent hours and hours with Telstra support trying to get it fixed, both on phone and live chat.

If you do ever find a fix though, please let me know :)

        • I went to a Telstra store and the guy was basically hopeless. Instead of taking a look at my account he was trying to sell me a Pixel because "he can match JB". Waste of time. Ended up getting the deal but signing up under my wife as well.

I still would like to fix my Telstra account to take advantage of future deals like this but my hopes are not high.

          • @chewkl: Yep, same here. I went on Telstra live chat last night and quickly realised I was wasting my time. It's almost as if we need Telstra to completely delete our profiles off their system, it seems like it needs to be escalated to some back house IT team or something. I have tried in the past but it's just completely hopeless. Will make sure I just take my wife with me if I need another Telstra plan down the track.

    • had to create a new email … got 3 telstra ids now and they can't delete my old ones (without a service on it) or even merge them

      • Same. If I try creating a new Telstra ID it says "great news! You already have one, sign in here".

The whole thing is a big mess.

  • For those who have signed up, where do you find your account number?

    • *the new plan's account number

  • Is everyone cancelling straight after signup or waiting until you collect?

    • +1

I am going to keep the plan for a month and make use of the 300gb for the first month, and port out.

  • Can the receipt that is printed out be used for TRS?
Or do U get a receipt upon collection?

    • -2

You get receipt when you pay for the phone.
On receipt it says $1700 giftcard so no luck with TRS with that $1700 part

      • why does it matter to TRS how you paid for it

      • goods purchased with gift cards or vouchers are eligible for a refund subject to all other TRS requirements being met

        • As long as GST is shown…

          • @jimwh: Hmmm can't see gst on the receipt.

            • +1

@mmd: I think there are two receipts… a preorder one and one on pick up. Or at least you can request one on pick up … I think

              • @pepsicles: Ok cheers

                • @mmd: My receipt for a 512GB XL has GST on it if around $200

  • Is everyone just porting in with their actual number and then porting out when they cancel or just getting a temporary sim to port into telstra? or can you just get a brand new number with them?

    • I think your number dies when you cancel. I just got a new number when I signed up.

    • Brand new number here. Rep didn't bat an eye. I'm using the included first month's data via the eSIM profile of my current device, with phone calls/text going through my actual service.

  • It looked like the way it worked was when I signed up to the mobile plan they handed me a $1700 gift card for me to use against the purchase. My receipt just looks like $1700 GC redemption and my top up payment on card.

Given that it was not a coupon of any kind, what happens if we cancel our preorders? Is it possible to get the $1700 GC for the price of the $865.67?

    • Yes the early exits are only $800. You won't be charged any more than that apart from the $99 first month payment obviously.

      • Any plans more tailored for Pixel 9 pro fold??

      • Not quite the question I had. I'm talking about cancelling the pre-order.

I mean if I took the receipt back to a store and said I wanted to cancel and refund… Would the worker refund the $147 amount back to my card, and refund the $1700 to a new gift card for me?

There's no way to tell on the receipt that the $1700 GC is from the promo vs something I'd been given by a generous friend.

        • I don't think they'll refund to a new gift card, it will go back to the previous one which you have no access to?

Either way, every store knows about the deal and you'll have to be very very lucky to get a rep who will refund you the gift card too.

      • No, but thanks for asking.
Sorry, have not taken advantage of such deals earlier so was unsure how to negotiate. I find it difficult to lie if someone asks me the question.

Anyway, I managed to get another deal with Student Beans code, and AU$700 for trade-in for Pixel 7 Pro, and AUD $450 + 10% as GoogleOne user.
Additionally, I had a few more Google store Credits that were expiring.
(Cost me $300 to upgrade a two yr old phone, and even that was subsidised by the Google Store Credits, so cannot complain)

        • There are like 5Jb stores within like 20 min public transport commutefrom Moore Park…

    • +2

I can only assume you're the kind of person to roll into a store offering something with a too-good-to-be-true price and saying "I seen this on OzBargain".

  • +1

    Thanks for the post BG.
Pretty straight forward process. I paid with TCN gift cards hahaha.
I signed up last night, but can't see the number in my Telstra app. I logged onto the JB hifi app and can see the number but it looks like i won't be charged the first month until 28/08 (Sim is not activated yet and can't seem any pending charge on my cc)
    Has anyone come across this?
