The red one has this cool textured back to it. Actually looks quite nice in person.

    • -2

Which store? I am quite keen to see it. Cheers

    • +3

      Pantone Viva Megenta.

Feels very premium….when it's not in a case.

    • +2

Pity the marshmallow blue color is only at JB
It has the same texture back but looks nicer than the red one

    • -1

Is it worth $100 more than G54 ?

      HOLD-strategy: consider checking stock-level…too-many keen buyers ?

    • Can confirm, have a Pantone Viva Magenta Razr. Looks and feels nice to touch, plus won't slide around when placed on a smooth surface.

  • +2

10% discount via Everyday Extra but I don't know if it stacks: https://www.everyday.com.au/extra.html

    • +5

You don't need the Everyday Extra. The XJUL2024 code works without the subscription. Just make sure you sign in your Everyday Rewards account.

      • +1

Ah huh, thanks for clarifying :)

      • Guessing can use the code once per rewards account?

        • +1

Correct, once per calendar month but can always sign up to a new BIG W account.

  • +1

Anyone know if this is dual physical sim?

    • +6

      It is

    • +3

      Yes its dual physical sim

    • +3

Note that there is no eSIM on the G84 but the G54 has eSIM.

  • How long is the battery life? Is the screen sharp?

    • +9

      Screen is superb

    • +5

      Battery easily lasts all day

    • +3

      Very light user here - I get 3 - 4 days on a charge.

      • Same here. Battery life is very good.

    • +1

Typically get two days with about 3 - 4 hours of reading per day (but not social media)

    • +4

I bought this as a "stop gap" after smashing the screen of my Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Battery life is so much better. I'm a heavy user and I never have to charge during the day.

      • Compared to the S22 Ultra how you finding the screen brightness/image quality etc?

        • +1

I don't think G84 screen is as bright, but a part of the problem is also the terrible auto brightness setting on the G84, which always seems to set the brightness too dim in all situations. A lot of the time, I have to manually increase the brightness on the G84.

I have no complaints with image quality TBH, especially for the price paid.

  • -1

Such good specifications, such shitty software support.

    • +2

Not sure why people neg when the statement is true…compare iPhone/Samsung/Pixcel ?

Android14 is the final OS upgrade.
Security patch is 3 years from release-date: end-2025.
If pressed, I can send link to Moto-AU official-page.

Buyers need to search the net for risk-mitigation-practice that is acceptable to THEIR-preferences.

Imo, Motorola made a good business-decision & it complement their yearly release of new models…see if you can work out why…why are you considering Moto-G84 &/or G54 ?

      • What's so shitty about it? Compare the price of this to iPhone/Samsung/Pixel too. It's all relevant.

        • Every commentators is entitled to HIS-preference…Murkymerv is saying software-support is TOO-short for HIS-liking, each-to-their-own. Why is HIS-preference inferior ?

          • @ab c: As is each persons preference whether to neg I guess.

Cheap, good specs, good software support. It's a bit of a pick 2 of 3 situation.

But really, what more do you want for a sub $300 phone?

            • @bamzero:

As is each persons preference whether to neg I guess.

              …and the source of the urge-to-neg ?

              People can live-a-life-time without understanding…& it's deep 🙏☸🕉🧘‍♂️

  • +1

    Tempted to get it lol

I've been using Motorola g5plus since learning about it on ozb. I am now on G82

The only think I dislike about the phones is the camera is not good.

  • Do you know how many years of security updates we are going to get? TIA

    • +7

It will have 1 major android update and 3 years security updates (~2026).

I have the prior generation Edge 20 Fusion and it's gone well. I've upgraded after 3 years to the Razr 40 and it's going fine so far. Edge 20 Fusion still working normally so I keep it as a backup phone in case mine or one of the family phones goes 'Yeah, Nah'.

      Main features I love:
      * Battery
      * NFC
      * Stable, minimal bloatware
      * Fast charging
      * Headphone port

      Don't like:
      * Meh camera. Decent shots but not Apple/Samsung level.

      • I have one and it's pretty much perfect.

I really wish it was USB 3, especially given its 256gb. Transferring a music library takes ages.

  • +6

I wish this had eSim like G54

    • +7

Unlike dearer eSIM phones, G54 only accepts 1 eSIM
To add new esim, had to delete old eSIM first.

As was using old eSIM for 2FA, requested replacement SIM on same number to be able to access account when needed.

      Not what I was expecting.
For years, swapped physical SIMs regularly for free data & calls in Deals. Thought eSIM on G54 would do the same.

      • +1

Did it really stop you from installing a new esim until you deleted the old one?

I found that forum thread that you linked but found another post elsewhere that said the G54 was capable of more than 1 esim. And some guy on WP said he got more than 1 esim on his.

Well this is quite disappointing if it only holds one esim.

        • +3

          My experience:
Yes. Repeatedly refused to add new eSIM via QR code or link in app sent with purchase of eSIM.
Contacted Amaysim - told to delete installed eSIM to install new one.

Set up in 1 minute after deleting eSIM!!

Advice in link is from a Senior MotoAgent in Moto forum!

Seems other people are giving advice based on their experience on flagship eSIM mobiles (eg iPhone), not G54…

That incorrect advice is what I read before buying - that could receive calls on 2 esims & swap between more.

          It can't!

Bought to easily swap between eSIMs on long overseas travel.

          • +2

@INFIDEL: Cheers for posting your experience.

I think I'll keep to using a physical local sim in my G54 and leave the esim for travel esims.

            • +1

@Mugsy: Learnt to check my gear before setting off to often more remote destinations! Have had unexpected failures with new gear.

Could have caused anxiety overseas, with less ability to contact support.
At least now know it's limitation.

Not a problem if you won't be using eSIM or number again. Should be able to reinstall old eSIM by requesting a replacement eSIM or SIM.

G54 is to be second mobile on travels. Always best to have a backup. Using easily obtainable & quickly installed eSIM.

[Had 2 older mobiles fail when in remote village in Japan. The place barely had a shop.
Software failed in first, water damage same week in second. Couldn't access information to get transport to airport for flight home. Or even the time!
On another trip there, camping @2500m on snow & ice, sleeping mat failed. Made sleeping difficult so called off week long 7d hike @3000+m ]

          • +1

            @INFIDEL: Are you sure?

Pretty sure its only one esim active at a time. So for dual sim operation, one sim must be physical sim. But you can store more than one esim and swap between them.

            • @dyziplen:

But you can store more than one esim

              No, as I linked above:
              Advice from Senior MotoAgent @Motorola:
Moto G54 5G can store only one eSIM at a time. However, you can switch between different eSIMs by deleting and adding a new one.

And not from my experience with G54.
The only option is to make installed eSIM inactive, but still refused to add a new eSIM.
Only could add a new eSIM after deleting old eSIM.

            • +9

@dyziplen: I have 4 esim stored in my G54 with no issues, but only one active. I have no problems in swapping them.

              • @asx100: How? That's not advice from Motorola
                Please provide instructions🙏
That's what I want to do!

                • @INFIDEL: It could be the amount of storage used up by the esim… different esims will use different amount of the storage. YMMV depending on the esims you want to load on.

                  • @Mugsy: Considering it's an almost new phone with little set up on it, there's plenty of storage. Both were Amaysim.

                    • +1

@INFIDEL: No, I mean the amount of memory on the esim chip that exclusively stores esim profiles. The number of profiles you can store isn't set in stone. It depends on how large each esim profile is which can vary, and the size of your esim storage.

                      Taken from Quora…

The storage capacity of an eSIM typically ranges from 1 kilobyte (KB) to 256 kilobytes (KB), which is significantly smaller than the storage capacity of traditional SIM cards, which can range from several megabytes (MB) to several gigabytes (GB) depending on the type of SIM card.

                      Source: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-storage-capacity-of-an-eSI…

I don't know how much storage there is on the G54 esim but say it's 64kb… if you have an esim profile that is 40kb on there and the next one is bigger than 24kb, then it's not going to install.

More expensive phones will have larger capacity esims.

                      • @Mugsy: That makes sense.
Still it wouldn't allow the 2nd esim on my G52. Had only added 1 eSIM before trying to add 2nd.

Others say it added multiple esims for them. So may be just a faulty G52!

                • +3

@INFIDEL: I have no special instructions. I have 3 Amaysims and one Eskimo. Everytime I just scanned the QR code and the setup was automatic. you can only have one active esim at a time. The Eskimo esim has no expiry date and I re-activate it whenever I need the extra data with no issues.

                  • @asx100: Thanks.
Strange, that is what I did, but installation of new eSIM repeatedly failed.
Went through the process for a week. Trying both the QR code & installing via Amaysim app.

My first Amaysim esim installed no problem. But 2nd wouldn't install, using same method. Kept timing out.
Had message in installation screen in app to contact support.

Amaysim reset the activation a few times so could be installed, but still kept failing to activate.

Did you turn eSIM to inactive before adding new eSIM?
                    Tried that. Didn't change problem.

Amaysim said always have to delete esim to add new esim on G52. Same as advice from Motorola.

May be a fault with my mobile.
                    Will try another eSIM.

                • +3

@INFIDEL: I installed another esim in Bali and didn't have to delete my usual one. When I returned I just selected the Woolworths Mobile one. Both are still stored on the phone, but only one can be active at a time.

                  • @jamesorion: Good to know. May be a fault with my mobile. Will try another eSIM.

          • @INFIDEL: No different than my daughters iPhone , the eSIM had to be deleted before a new one could be added

    • -1

No eSIM, no wireless charging, not waterproof,
      What else is missing?

      • USB3.

      • +11

        Pricing over $300

        • Hey, I know it is great value, or I would not even be asking.

  • +1

    Do these record calls automatically?

    • No phones sold in Australia are allowed to record phone calls.

      • Any rootable Android can record calls.

Heck, my answering machine records phone calls if I pick up the phone after it answers.

Legality varies state by state whether you even have to let the other person know they're being recorded.

      • I don’t know that. I need to record my calls for work. Any idea how to get a phone that can record calls? Should I try ordering one directly from China?

        • Sure if you want the CCP to potentially have the ability to listen to your recorded calls too 😂

          • +1

@Nillionaire: CCP can bite my PP. I couldn’t care what they listen to. I just need to be able to record a bunch of garbled instructions yelled by my boss on the worksite.

            • +1

@Chris17: One boss I had would change his memory of his instructions to me so much that I was actually starting to think I was the issue until I started taping our calls just to be able to be confident in saying "no you definitely said this not that". Saved my bacon.

        • +2

I don't think it's got anything to do with the phone, you just need to install a call recording app if you want to record calls

  • +11

More RAM than the entry level MacBook Air

    • -6

More RAM doesn't mean anything. It's the hardware architecture, OS integration and optimization.

      • Lol why is this downvoted? iPhone 14 Pro Max has 6GB RAM and will perform way better than this, as it should considering the price difference, but the point is 12GB RAM on this indeed does not mean anything. Remember a couple years ago when Samsung were first flexing their significantly higher megapixel numbers but still taking worse (non high zoom) photos than Apple and Google? 😂

  • +6

Just a heads up that there is a known bug with the volume when connected via Bluetooth or headphone jack. The volume is quite low on max setting. Apparently there is no fix for it as of yet either though it was reported to Motorola months ago. A quick Google search will confirm it.

    • Yep I can concur. I have a Galaxy Note9 as well. To get the same loudness on my car's stereo with both the G84 and Note9 set to BT 100% volume, I have to set the car stereo volume to 33 for the Note9 and 42 for the G84.

    • +1

Yup volume connected to my little JBL go is really low,
with my xm4 headphone it's fine, buds fe is a little low but high volume is bad anyways.

The really annoying thing is the volume stepping is massive and can't find a good level with physical buttons.

    • Deal breaker for me, thank you

  • +5

Had decent budget phones in the past, decided to jump to a flagship (pixel 7 pro), honestly wish I just kept buying these, it's so stressful having a $1000 brick in your pocket lol

  • +1

This or the Redmi Note 13?

    • +1

      This

      • Even over the RN 13 Pro?

        • +1

13 Pro is double the price of this on sale. Very different price range.

          • +1

@shxhshzhz: Hardly double the price. Can get the 8gb variant for just over $300.
12gb variant is about $100 more than the G84.

          • +2

@shxhshzhz: You can buy a global Note 13 Pro 5G or Poco X6 from AliExpress for ~350 on sale or a China model (only if you use Vodafone) for sub 300.

  • +5

My God, just how many of these things did they make?

  • Can anyone tell me if this model allows me to pay using tap and pay with the phone? I was reading that apparently a lot of Motorola models dont support it and im not quite sure if this one does or not. Any advice appreciated.

    • Yes. I do it many times a day. Myki works perfectly too.

      • Great, thanks for quick responses team, good to know.

      • Do you find you have to unlock it after tapping often? I feel I'm always doing it since the phone is unlocked by other methods

    • The tech that uses is called NFC, and the g84 has that.

  • I am logged in, but still get this message on the red version "Sign in or Link Rewards Card to use code". Is there something I am missing? Thanks.

    screenshot of the same: https://imgur.com/a/f8tqKhe

    • I had this problem, desktop and website are not working properly. I used the BIG W App on my phone and it worked.

EDIT: Just looked at your screenshot again. Looks like you might need to link your Everyday Rewards Card to your BIG W account.

      • I appreciate your response - but it doesn't mention everyday rewards in the OG post.

        • +2

You don't need to have the Everyday Extra Subscription but you will need to have the FREE Everyday Rewards Loyalty Card account membership to link to your BIG W account and use the Code "XJUL2024" to get the extra 10% off.

            • @Geekomatic: Others have commented that they have had success unlinking and relinking their Everyday Rewards account to their BIG W account and then trying to use the code.
All I can comment on is my actual experience, which was successful.
BTW this type of code can only be used once a month per account. Have you possibly used it already this month?
