I think it's not fair to throw our frustrations solely at Tesla. They're not the only company with sky high prices. There's Polestar, Peugeot just released a model priced at $68k + OR, Kia, Hyundai even Toyota.

  • What's a comparable BYD version and price?

    • +2

BYD doesn't have a comparable product, the Atto 3 is a smaller SUV.

    • +6

BYD Atto ($48,000 + ORC) is comparable to Model Y.

It's smaller than Model Y, has less range and looks like a clown car from inside.

      • Bought mine for $46k drive away last month.

        • After $6K QLD EV rebate?

          • @dealhunter52: No, I wasn’t eligible as I was doing a novated lease.

            • @Nuggets: Novated lease price is different from private buyers. Usually, you don't pay GST in novated lease.

              • @dealhunter52: I approached the dealer and got an invoice for $46,000 including gst which I then took to my bank and they arranged the finance. Yes I did not pay the gst component. I am not quoting the gst exclusive price why would I do that.

If I had gone white colour it would have been $45,300 drive away (including gst…)

                • @Nuggets: Looks like you got a better deal and not everyone is going to get the same price. It's still $48,011 + ORC in NSW.

    • +2

Maybe the Sealion 7 if it comes to Australia… Whenever that is. Right now, nothing. I wouldn't count the Atto 3 as I reckon that's an unfair comparison.

  • +1

Model Y 2024 vic still gives me $62728 for me.

There are two prices for 2024 Model Y Blue, I'm guessing you can still have 2024 Model one with HW 3 and one with HW 4?

Or is the difference just the silver vs black hub caps?

  • do these still have indicator stalks?

    • +6

They do but will probably be removed in the next OTA update

      • Dang, Elon gonna sneak into your garage one night and steal em.

  • Is there any reason why the 2024 model wouldn't be worth the extra $1,100?

    • -3

2024 had a lot of upgrades. Confort suspension, and double glasing to begin with. Quieter and more comfortable ride. Also they recently had the hardware 4 upgradebso much better camera systems around the car. Ryzen upgrade was 2024 also i think

      • +2

The recent 2023 has comfort suspension and double glassing. It was just the early 2022, start of 2023 that didn't have the comfort suspension.
The only difference from recent 2023 to the 2024 is the ultrasonic sensors removed and replaced with the upgraded HW4 and higher res cameras. Also the wheel covers changed from silver to black.

        • Sounds like worth paying the extra for

  • -2

Website is showing 55,900 still. I have one on order to collect next weekend. So hopefully the price drop happens this week if its going to lol

  • Would consider it if they throw in a free stalk upgrade.

    • +2

You are in luck then as Model Y still has the stalks.

    • stalk up while you can.

  • +1

Am I missing something? why would anyone buy these when the prices are dropping daily?

Shouldnt one wait for the 10k chinese evs to get here to see what the actual price of a tesla should be? or if theyll even continue to survive in this market?

My brother in law has one and now hes got one for life as he cant resell without losing a lot of money.

    • but can he afford to keep it?
perhaps he should sell now and take today's loss.

      • +2

Or drive it for another 300000 KM and then deprecation is irrelevant anyway.

      • +1

I think if he goes ahead and realises that loss this year he might have marital troubles that outweigh the money.

    • Buy now if you want a car and like Tesla. 🤷‍♂️ Tech will get cheaper and better if you wait, but that isn't any good if you don't have a car to drive in the meantime.

  • I really feel for the amazing people who paid an inflated price to save the planet.

    • +4

      to save the planet

      It's ok - they didn't

    • It's amazing that there are people like you who are naive enough to think people actually consider the environment when they purchase a car.

  • +2

Buy high, sell low! Doesn’t matter if it’s the car or the stock

  • Call me when their 30G’s

    • +1

Well there a brand new Yaris on the car yard for you at that price.

  • +1

well this changes the game it directly competes with byd well it just mean more Tesla's on the road here in Queensland at least. its rare to see byd here.

    • +2

I was tossing between an atto 3 and a model y just last year. Price difference back then was about $20k and just couldn't justify it, now it's down to $6k. Byd really need to sharpen their price now

      • +1

yeah everyone i know that bought a atto 3 regretted it in 12 months of owning it and wished they got the model Y, this may not be everyones experience but so far 3 people i know now have regretted it. So even with the price being attractive for BYD you just need to do your research.

        • I don't find anything wrong with the car tbh other than being abit small. I would still rank it on top amongst all the Chinese EV's in terms of quality and finish. Don't know how they can compete in the price wars though, considering ev direct dictates their prices here in Aus.

  • -1

These drops must be the rumored facelift / update

  • Many news saying EV supply > demand, not sure if it’s true. I will expect prices will keep going down, not just Telsla, all EV

    • That’s what the headlines say, but then the articles have data and charts showing growth of 10%. Growth is growth. Then the article showing Tesla depreciation, but in the same article the table had the Tesla with the best re-sale of the EVs. I don’t have one, but many people I know have them and rave about the ongoing savings. Cost me $50 in fuel to drive to the beach today. So yeah I will consider an EV and won’t care about depreciation.

    • EVs also have much higher profit margins and with Batterys generally getting cheaper and making up a large part of the price more room to move.

I bought my Model Y 6 months after release so they've come down like 15k or something, but between the running cost savings, driveability and software improvements (recent headlight matrix/blanking update is amazing) I have zero regrets replacing my previous RAV4. I can't go back to driving a sluggish ice car, that instant torque is just to damn good

  • Damn, these cars are depreciate faster than Euro cars, 2021 Pro model almost 50% off, isnt this closed to $100k back then?

    • +1

Wait til these are 10 old to see some real depreciation.

    • can't beat Depreciation on a Euro car. 50% gone in 3 years..
The used prices are actually holding well, the cheapest used Tesla's are just under $40k. Why pay that for 4 year old 70k km one when can buy a new for an extra $15k

  • +5

    HODLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
    Source : Trust me bro.

    • +2

      In seamonkey we trust.

  • +1

    Tesla Model Y RWD $54,900 (2024)

    Can't see any in VIC

  • For me $13K drop in 6 months lol

    • Imagine those who spent bit more a year ago

  • +7

I’d jump on this but the model 3 facelift looks so better than the old one. These (Y) will look old when the new one is released.

    • +1

Yeah the “old” (current) model Y isn’t a great looking car and needs an update. They just upsized the model 3 too much. It’s still a good car and good value at this price though.
I’m sure the new model will cost significantly more when it’s released.

    • +3

That's only reason I never married my current girlfriend

      • Yeah that new one will cost you a lot more

  • +6

Wish I could afford a Tesla

  • Just bought a nissan leaf 2023 for 34k, not sure if it's a good bargain?

    • +1

Aren't leafs (leaves?) still using chademo and still don't have proper battery cooling. I think for $22-25 grand (jdm import) they're OK buy but not for 34k.

    • +6

      Sorry to hear about that

    • +3

A used model 3 for 3 grand more is a better bargain.

      • But if I believe the media there should be used model 3 cars for under $10k now needing a battery replacement.
        Where are all these cars?

    • +1

A base mg4 would have been a better choice

  • +4

I would if Victorians could buy from QLD and drive back to VIC…

  • The final price for LR in VIC with addon of autopilot is about 90K, not sure if I’m missing anything.

    • +2

Im guessing mean full autonomous driving? Not much point when it cant actually do anyrhing in australia without your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. You pretty much have to drive anyway. Better off sticking to the included autopilot

      • +1

Yeah default autosteer is 90% of the “autopilot” you need. Go test drive one and see for yourself. You have to try it

    • Financial sense?

  • -7

    no thanks to EVs..

  • +4

Max I’d pay for a brand new tesla is $30K and I’m partial coz that’s all I could afford

  • +8

Put it into perspective. If you do 30,000 a year in a sedan at $130 a tank of 65L, plus insurance at 1500 a year plus rego at 750 and some tyres (500 per year?), service $500 per year and nothing else going wrong at all, your up for over $190 per week to keep the car running. Current lease plans on a model Y fully serviced including everything youre up for 230 a week with the FTB exemption.

What sort of car can you get on a loan of $40 per week? Lol suddenly the tesla sounds like a good deal.

    • +2

And they are amazing vehicles that most ICE owners don’t even know are driving next to their $70k rav4, which they bought because their friends bought one

      • +1

Yeah I understand everyone has their preferences, but i hope by pointing out the difference of cost of owning one might make people realise the cost of fuel and servicing will end up covering the difference of the depreciation between them over 5 years pretty easy lol

    • -1

      Who spends $500/year on tyres?

      • Youre joking right? How long do tyres last? 45k? 50k? How much do they cost? 250 each? Thats pretty standard pricing really. So 1000 for a set of tyres every 2 years is pretty standard at 30,000 a year. And most people dont get 60,000 out of a set.

        • Average is about 15,000km a year in AU. 30,000km is an incredible edge-case of usage

          • -3

@BobLim: Well if you read the above example it was based on 30,000 per year. I do more than that. I didnt say "based on the average" i said based on 30,000km per year.

            • @AndyRoo:

it was based on 30,000 per year

So admittedly not "pretty standard" then, unless you've got very expensive tyres, or travelling very high mileage?
I don't think you'll get two services (@ 15,000km) in many cases for $500 total either.

My understanding is that novated leases aren't a magic pudding - if your lease payments won't cover the tyres or any other costs, your 'running costs' balance will be eaten up and you'll need to contribute extra. Is this incorrect?

              • +1

@BobLim: Yes but your lease payments are set based on your usage. Eg if you tell them you do 10,000 a year it will be less per week than if you do 20,000. My quote of 240 a week is based on the running costs of 30,000.

              • +1

@BobLim: Also feel free to edit the esimations. These are best guesses but will vary with your car. I guessed that a stabdard service averages around 250 which i thought was on the mow side considering most are over 200 and major will be substantially higher. Tyres around 800 a set every 45,000 for most family cars. Petrol $2 per L, average lately has been between, 1.89 and 2.29. Insurance i have for 3 cars is between 1200 and 1800. Rego for vic is pretty standard at 750.

          • @BobLim: Yep. Only way to make the math work though. Under 15000k you are sunk by the depreciation and insurance

            • @Brick Tamland: Nah under that you wouldn't get the benefits of the fuel saving which is where you really save the money.

          • @BobLim: I think average is closer to 12,000km/year according to google.

        • +1

Good luck finding $250 tyres for your 20" rims. Any decent tyre would surely cost more than that!

          • @drprox: Lol. You missed the point entirely. The tyres for the tesla are included in the lease cost. The 250 a tyre was for the ICE comparison. Eg what i am currently playing.

        • Fair enough, I paid $500 for 4x Michelin xm2 energy fitted, balanced and wheel alignment included. Though they were 15".

I expect at least 5 years out of them, 60,000km or more.

    • -2

      Current lease plans

So $40 a week more for a car you don't own and need to hand back?

      • +1

No actually. 40 a week more and after 5 years you pay 16k and either keep or sell it. But whats the alternative?
Spend 190 a week to maintain a car but you still need to purchase 1. You can add 40 a week to the 16k you would pay for the tesla and all you have to spend 25k on a 2nd hand car, and hope you have no problems for 5 years, then after 5 years your resale value will be a lot less than the tesla and you would have been driving around in a older basic car? I dont see the benefits there.

    • -3

Who da f**k pays $2 a litre for petrol lol I filled up last week at 1.67. Also tyres, really! I haven't replaced my set of tyres for the past 3 years. While EV have their selling points, especially at higher KM, don’t live in a fairy land and make them sound perfect for everyone

      • Petrol was ~$1.67 for E10 last week, but over the weekend a lot of nearby locations shot up to ~$2.25, and for 95 (which is becoming increasingly required as emissions standards put the pressure on) closer to ~$2.40.

Tyres obviously depend on your mileage and other variables, but at an average of ~15,000km per year, you absolutely should be considering new tyres at ~45,000kms (3 years), so that would be pretty typical.

  • +2

Just for the folks who are interested in getting a model y, I was advised by Tesla that all 2024 hw4 models have black wheel covers versus hw3 have the silver ones. Although they are all 2024. Please Double check with their sales before placing the order.

  • +3

I only buy this if it comes with a full tank! lol

    • There is cybertruck

  • -1

I think the new Model 3 looks nice enough but the Y looks so lame. Why would anybody buy this over and Ioniq 5 or EV6?
