How did you get the figure of 120 points deducted for CC rejection?

      • +1

have got rejected from CC's sometimes couple of times in a row within 3-4 months - score had never gone down more than 50 points combined.

Financial Institutions are unlikely to be sharing their detailed Credit Card/Unsecured lending formulas.

One way to potentially do a very high level sanity check on expectations is to use one of the home loan borrowing power capacity calculators, where you can see the difference in the borrowing capacity amount (which you can roughly compare to your current home loan) against different credit cards you have/plan to open.

So if you're home loan is $500k and your aspirational credit limit gives you a borrowing capacity of $450,000 against current interest rates, that may be a warning sign that approval likelihood is lower.

There'll be a range of other criteria as part of the assessment, and some FIs are stricter/more lenient. There's never going to be a guarantee based on everyone's individual situation.

      • Interesting & kind of make sense.
I was hoping if we fellow ozbargainer got a hand to their secret tool so I can be certain.

  • Does the 18 month window apply to AMEX corporate card holder or is this a different reward altogether?

    • following, have an amex business also

      • I think if you have a business card (not corporate) then it may make you ineligible.

    • +1

No, amex corporate cards don't affect this, only personal (and business) cards affect the 18 month. I have a corporate green card and was able to get the points.

I believe it does say it somewhere in the T&Cs

  • +1

This or hsbc star airline card?

    • Why not both?

Velocity more useful in the long run if you keep accumulating I feel, but the Aeroplan points with HSBC are a good sugar hit (and they do sometimes offer ~100% bonuses on top up points) with good availability in APAC region.

      • What is 100,% bonus?
Do you mean 100k Aeroplan points?
Can apply for both but no sure about servicebility and min income requirement

        • Apologies, wasn't clear, you can purchase points at basically half price (they offer 100% bonuses). If you have award seats in mind, still cheaper than cash, but not the best use of cash.

anyone know what the delivery turn around would be on the card arriving. would love to try and use the complementary flight around January 23rd but not sure if it will arrive in time for me to make the first spend and then book flights.

    • +5

Approval within two days and card usually arrives within a week (priority mail)

      • thanks :)

      • did you get approval email in 2 days? did they ask for docs?

        • Email asking for docs within an hour and approved within a day once docs were supplied. You can call them to expedite the document review and they will advise the outcome on the call.

    • how long did it take for u to get your card? i also want to book flights asap

      • +1

Was pretty quick. Ordered on a weekend and was delivered by Wednesday. Then had to make payment on a transaction and once that was processed from a pending transaction (approx 48 hours) I was able to book through the comp flight website

        • oh goodie thanks. i hope mine's delivered by friday. are u in a major city location/is the amex distribution in the same city?

          • @aurumlover: In major city yes, not sure where they are sent from sorry. Fingers crossed for you!

            • @dealsdealsdeals: found out they were sent from sydney and it took one business day because it was priority mail. I made a payment and it's not pending anymore, but for some reason I was unable to book the flight because amex hadn't provided virgin with my free flight details… the only thing i can think of is perhaps I haven't paid annual fee yet? would u happen to know if u had paid that first?

              • @aurumlover: No. But my partner had trouble with them accrediting her free flight because they had supplied her with a new velocity number and she was checking her free flight details through an old velocity account number. Maybe give them a call because that's what we had to do to get her free flight figured out!

                • @dealsdealsdeals: Thanks for the information. I got off the phone with amex, and they told me to wait a 2-3 weeks for the amex team to give virgin my free flight accreditation because "it is a new card". I didn't have a velocity number when I signed up for the cc, but created one and called amex to add it to my account last Friday. Were they able to do that for your partner straightaway?

                  • +1

@aurumlover: We have both previously had amex/velocity accounts. But instead of crediting the flight to her old account they created her a new one it seems. And it still only took 2-business days from approval on her first transaction for the flight credit to be processed so I wouldn't buy the '2-3 weeks' they mentioned to you.

  • Does Virgin allow family pooling?
How is availability of other airline partner business class using virgin points?

    • Family pooling yes, provided same household address, and only 2 adults, rest have to be below 18

    • i don't get why family pooling is required, when points can be transferred from one account to another for free?

Has anyone tried redeeming the complimentary flight Sydney to Perth?

The flight map allows to you do Perth to Sydney return but not the other way around.

    https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/credit-cards/frequent-…

    • +1

      They do not allow it.

      • Can we split the complimentary flight seeing there's no return flights for Syd to Per?

  • How quickly can I cancel this card once I reach the $3k spend for the 100K Velocity points?

    • +4

You can cancel it immediately. But you don’t get any of the annual fee back

      • Cheers mate

      • +1

don't you have to wait for 100k points to be credited first?

    • +3

when the points hit your velocity account you could kill it.. but you'd be in the hole for the annual fee and lose out on the loungepasses/flights.. you'd want to use that up before hand too, so you might have to wait a bit after the fee applies etc.

      • Thanks man, yeah tossing up on whether I pump the benefits and dump the card, never had a CC before so just trying to work it all out hey

        • +2

you're in for the year for that annual fee, might as well hang on to it till you use up the benefits etc.
it's either pump and dump or hang on to for this card cause the re-wait is 18mth which is longest out of the bunch, most others are 12mth..
but there's usually enough deals and cashback offers etc with amex to warrant hanging on to it for the year to get max value out of it.
only real reason would be to restart the wait period as soon as poss or if you need credit check to clear etc.

          • +1

@xdivino: Is it 18 months from cancel or application? I can understand that dude's logic if say you get the points, take the flight / use the passes and then dump the card if it means shortening the exclusion window.

            • +1

@Ham Dragon: 18mths no longer a customer so would be from when you cancel but they’re sneaky that it’s statement period still I believe.

        • +3

This is not the best value card for a pump and dump. $375 fee for 100k points works out to be 0.375c/point.
This card is a good one to good onto though. Has good perks and a good earn rate.

Other cards provide better value. The virgin money card for example is the best bang for buck. Works out to be 0.1c/point ($65 yields 60k ponits) and you get a $124 flight voucher.

          • +1

@ninnypoop: Fair enough. For me this card is easy to justify with the return airfare included as I’m currently living in Perth where any return flight to another city is always more than ~$500, which justifies the card outright and the points are a benefit

            • +1

@krazykonr: Fair. Though make sure to check the flight eligibility. I think I've read before that certain flights into and out of Perth are excluded from this offer

Edit: You can see the available flights here: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/credit-cards/frequent-…

              • +1

@ninnypoop: Wow great little tool, yeah I knew it covered east coast as a colleague has the card and had used it for that. Thanks for the help!

Edit: forgot to include but I made a real nincompoop mistake and signed up on the AMEX site in the end anyway. Live and learn 😢

                • +1

@krazykonr: You can usually withdraw and reapply. Or at least give them a call and see if they will add the referral. It's worth a shot.

  • Mod: The user did not declare association and has received a sockpuppeting ban.

Just curious, how does Mod find out?🤔

    • +1

“A strong offer here from American Express, appears to be an exclusive from source: Flight Hacks(flighthacks.com.au)

Note this offer isn't available by going to Amex directly (they're only offering 60k bonus points), you'll need to use the link above”

The way it is worded is almost a dead giveaway

      • +2

Also a brand new account “planemad”

  • Can you get Amazon - prime refunded with this card?

    • No, this perk is only available to Platinum card holders.

  • How do contractors with ABN apply for credit cards? NAB rejected me saying they don't care about any ABN income when it's been operated less than 12 months.

  • Is it possible to sell the lounge passes? And could you sell the flight credit by booking it in their name?

  • +4

Just note if you're a regular churner you'll likely get rejected. I've had Amex cards a few times in the past as well as many others - now I get auto rejected by them despite easily hitting their minimum income.

    • What is the min income for this card?

    • How many times have your churned Amex cards?

  • +1

Does anyone know the conditions of the free flight. Can you have the flight under someone else’s name?

    • They used to allow this under their other cards, probably the same still

  • "Enjoy a complimentary annual Virgin Australia return economy domestic flight between selected cities after your first Card spend each anniversary year"

Do you get the complimentary Virgin return domestic flights in your first year, or only after your first year? That statement reads like it's after your first year.

    • +3

The complimentary domestic economy Virgin Australia return flight is only available between selected Australian cities and is available for booking by American Express Velocity Platinum Card Members after your first Card spend in the first year, and then after your first Card spend each year after the anniversary of your Membership.

      • is there a $ cap on this complimentary flight?

  • My 18 month hiatus will run out late Feb. Hope it will still be around.

  • Offer not available if you have held an American Express-issued card in the past 18 months.

This condition kills this deal for me,
otherwise, I would have jumped on this.

Maybe this is a sign of things to come, for other cards,
if the 12-month window now starts shifting to 18-months
    :-(

    • +4

Its always been 18m with amex, no?

      • +2

Been 18 months for at least the 10 years I have been churning them.

      • -1

I just thought AMEX was like other cards, ie. 12-month window

I have churned AMEX once or twice before,
but I don't remember if it was 18-months or not.

  • How to find out a particular person is passed 18 months waiting period?

    • Look at credit checking services like credit savvy, it should tell you in the closed accounts section the last time (usually a month and year) a report was received from each account. Should coincide with when that account was closed or close enough to it.

  • I remember I signed up an almost identical deal but with $195 annual fee (and can be used as 'travel credit'). The deal was pre COVID though.

edit: looks to be the same deal but just reworded with a slight difference. Now $375 with a 'free return flight'. So essentially $180 more than pre-covid. I blame inflations.

    • +1

You must be referring to the Amex Platinum Edge Card that has an annual fee of $195, and used to have a complimentary Virgin Domestic Return Flight pre-Covic. Now it only comes with $200 Travel Credits.

  • Does anyone know if I can cap the card limit?
I recall that it may impact you borrowing capacity if you are looking for a mortgage.
I also wish that there is a similar deal but with either Visa/MasterCard :(

    • +1

You can choose the lowest amount which I think is 3k

  • +3

Wish Amex did another offer on the Platinum charge card similar to what they had last year where the sign up points cover the annual cost of the card. The platinum charge cards benefits were excellent.

    • Yeah, I want to jump on this deal, but I'm trying to wait for a Platinum deal.

      • +4

Also just finished 18 months and waiting for a platinum deal similar to Jan 2023. Hopefully 300,000 MR points or more!

    • Recon if they will offer a similar deal?
Looks like that the deals have been worse off recently compared to those in previous years.

  • Pretty good deal.. 100k velocity is around $500 gift cards + return flight domestically (circa $600 for a Mel-Per flight, which I planned in August) + 4 x lounge passes - $375 annual fee. So its a $700 deal if that return domestic flight is used well.

    • +1

Assume Melb-Perth would be included as an option to use the free flight on?

  • do I have to fly with Virgin to be able to use the complimentary lounge?

    • Yeah, you show your boarding pass upon entry

  • Lets hope for a similar QFF deal!

  • Whats the min credit limit on this card, can't seem to find it on the main page…

  • Can anyone please check how much points you need to go to Dubai economy or business :)

    • +2

One way is 63k points + 310.00 or 115700 points economy.

Business is 119k + 411.87 or 188k points (but finding a business reward flight takes a fair bit of looking)

    • +2

Depends upon the date & time of flight. Usually one way starts (Economy Reward) from 56,000 Points and $280.63 (or 103,000 Points)

  • Interesting to see this card seems to award points (0.5 per $1) for government organisation payments and they also count toward the eligible spend
I have my rates coming up.. anyone else reading the same?

“ Eligible purchases do not include annual Card fees, cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies.”

    • Amex is probably going to be my issue hey..

  • ugh my 18 months is up Feb 20th this year and this deal looks valid until feb 6th :(

  • -4

First time getting a credit card. If you buy stuff to hit the 3k spend and refund it will it count towards the 3k spend?

    • no if the same credit card is used to process the refund
