    Exclusion period two years :(((

    • +8

Wtf, this is new. I thought 18 months exclusion for Amex and NAB was harsh… But 2 years?

      • +2

St george and co have also increased to 24 months. Anything related to westpac is 24 months.

        • ffs, my 1 year anniversary date it today to find now I have to wait another year….

      • dang, didnt know about NAB's 18 months. applied last month and was just a month away from 18 months. already got slugged the annual fees :(

      • 24 months is quickly becoming the standard to stop people like us jumping ship every 12 months.

    • +4

I’m sidelined too, but will consider it for a churn in 6 months. This card isn’t that great, but very churnable. 0.75 velocity per $ spent is meh. Amex Velocity Platinum is 1.25/$ and not much more of an annual fee (after the first year I mean).

    • +5

Yup. New norm unfortunately. Picking really wisely now, and churning between my partner and I to maximise this.

Still one of the better ones for velocity, despite the exclusion criteria.

      • +2

        I need a partner now :(

      • Looking at this, do you have partner as a 2nd card holder?
From what I can tell it does affect them going for the same card and getting the bonus?

        • +1

I never apply for a 2nd card holder. Just add the primary card for free to your partner's google/android/apple pay and spend away, hitting the bonus criteria sooner! Good luck!

    • +6

Is the game finally coming to an end?

      • +4

End of an era. RIP, churning.

  • Applied for this a few weeks ago and still waiting.

They send occasional emails saying my application is waiting for me, but on the phone they verify that I've done all I can.

    • I applied it online and got it approved instantly with a digital cc card?! Fastest ever!

      • Same here, probably only for people who already have westpac accounts

        • I never had a account with them. But i had to visit the branch for dd payment set-up.

And also applied for Bendigo, that was a long process.

  • +3

They have started rejecting churners as well :'(

  • +14

There’s literally no good deal anymore

    • This started happening soon after the government added more pressure on banks to limit CC a few years back. Don't think you get any better these days.

  • +1

You can get a refund of the annual fee (not including the velocity fee) if you hit the spending in the first month. Easy way to get 90k points for $75

    • By cancelling or just because you hit it in first month?

      • +2

Call em up and say you have only had the card for a month, want a refund of the annual fee. They might say no at first, but eventually they’ll cave.

        • +2

I got the full $225 back.

    • +3

You can find a casual job at Westpac then get a no auunual fee card for lifetime

      • +3

So you mean you can get the Velocity Black with no annual fee for life? Sounds too good to be true.

        • +2

Yes, I used to work at St George bank for 4 month as a causal customer service. I applied a Qantas black card, and no annual fee for 3 years so far.

          • +2

@Sprayoz: This is the evolution of getting bargains,… work long enough for a conpany, to get the discount and then quit!

          • @Sprayoz: How does one apply as an ex-employee? I have probably forgotten all my WBC staff ID details

      • +7

This is next level OzB, HR at WBC are about to be boarded with resumes.

        • Already submitted my and partner's CV for low level data entry.

What’s with these new program fees, absolute crap. These credit card deals have gone to shit over the past few years.

    • +6

Unless you’ve been living under a rock all this time. This program fee has always been there.

    • Agreed. They also call it a program fee instead of just combining it together and just charging 1 annual fee so they can still charge customers with home loan packages this fee.

  • +1

@OP: Might wanna add to the description that it's a $295 annual fee for non-customers. $75 program fee on top is the same.

    • If you sign up for a free Westpac trading account it counts as being an existing customer and you get the discounted rate. Did this 11 months ago on the same card through the app. Hope this helps!

  • +1

Mannn these are getting so shit

  • Loving this as my keep card while on a mortgage package deal with Westpac.

    • +1

That's nice. But still won’t let you churn (I'm on the Westpac package too).

      • Can you still get sign up bonus if applying with mortgage package deal?

        • You can. I have done it twice. But under the new regs, you can only do it every 24 months which sucks.

    • Can you elaborate

  • So would I be not be eligible if I’ve held a virgin frequent flyer credit card recently?

    • -2

      No you’re not eligible.

    • +1

If it's from a different bank, you'd be fine. If it was Westpac, then no, you would not be eligible.

  • Has anyone seen one of these cards that have the free foreign currency option? 3% is killer.

  • For existing customers is it $150 af total or 150+75 ?

  • Paying annual fees for credit card is ridiculous.
In most other countries, annual fees don't exist. The credit card company makes their money from the merchant fee i.e. it will be a percentage of the customer spend.

    • +2

Well, that works in other countries because the regulations permit it. Thats not the case here.

Merchant fees are, by law, much lower here, and they’re also paid by the customer most of the time (and rarely absorbed by the business.)

      Ergo, annual fees.

  • how much is 90,000 point worth?

  • Got this deal last year after being with a few other CC issuers. Everyone’s experience will differ but Westpac have been the best to deal with so far. For example, just called them this afternoon and waited <2 mins to be connected to a real living person. The app works flawlessly albeit a little counterintuitive.

ANZ was, by far, the worst. Incorrect account charges, being turned away from a branch because they were too busy, multiple failed online transactions even though the online limit wasn’t close to being exceeded, archaic app, 45 minute wait times on the phone etc.

Virgin Money weren’t too bad. No real complaints, no notable positives except for the bonus points on offer at the time.

  • I'm keen to apply for this
i've just closed amex and a virginmoney card
I have about $3k in bills over xmas so would be keen to try and get this card, make the min spend and then kill it off for the quick points mode etc.
There's no bonus passes or flights etc? it's just a points grab?

I saw above there's virtual CC issued - is that able to use like type card number details before the physical card? or just an apple pay kinda thing?

I dont think velocity have many other banks left for me to try after this card.
Amex, Virgin Money and Westpac - maybe CBA and citi left? or risks with citibank cards and bank cards now?

    • +1

Apparently I have an account (i don't have any accounts) so I can't do my application online since i have a customer id, try forgot customer ID, says need card, I don't have a card.. call up.. hung up on 8 times in a loop saying just reset your password online.. zero thought process to that system.. so no I have to waste a day to go to branch tomorrow..

      • Same here, I probably had an account with westpac over 15 years ago. And it says I have an existing account….

  • +1

I think I prefer the Amex offer to this assuming a 12 month horizon before churning.

    American Express Velocity Platinum Card

    • Annual fee: $440
    • Key benefits:
      • Unlimited lounge access
      • Free domestic flight (approximate value $300)
      • Higher points earning rate
      • Better merchant offers and discounts
      • Full lounge access (especially valuable for solo travelers)

    Westpac Card

    • Annual fee: $295
    • Key benefits:
      • 2 lounge passes only
      • 2 Economy X upgrade vouchers
      • Higher initial signup bonus (30,000 more points)

My thoughts on the better card

    • The Amex costs $145 more annually
    • However, the higher earning rate on $60,000 annual spend earns approximately 30,000 extra points, offsetting Westpac's higher signup bonus
    • The free flight ($300 value) and unlimited lounge access make the higher annual fee worthwhile
    • Amex offers generally provide better value than Westpac/Shopback alternatives
  • Easiest way to become a Westpac customer to get the reduced first year fee?

    • Open a transaction account

      • there are hoops tough to get rid of fee right? as far as i can tell not free… anyone know other options?

        • +1

Hoops? I don't know anything than the deposit $2000 each month to avoid fee.

  • Do these 120 days spending timeframe start when you get approved or when you activate your card?
