    Good offer, can recommend.

Wish they'd do the same for the Qantas one - I got the then-standard offer of 120,000 QFF points around two years ago, but it's been stuck at 60,000 for a long time now…

    • +1

The 110k points for the amex QF ultimate is the one i miss the most. Missed out on using the centurion lounge due to covid closures.

Might just bite into this one i guess.

      • +1

depends if you trying to stack qantas points which I think is better value, but then again qantas flights are higher than pre pandemic

    • +2

      $375 annual fee.

Isn't this killing most of the benefits?

      • +4

Did you read what the benefits were?

        • +1

return domestic flights costs about $220
4 entries to lounge costs about $120
Basically you're paying those with the annual fee.

          • +6

@xwu: Depends where you live. Return from WA to anywhere you struggle to get under $200 each way.

          • @xwu: How do you get a lounge entry for $30, I’d like to pay for family to come in but price i see is $65?

            • @Captain Hindsight: OC is considering $65 to be an inflated price and putting the "real value" of a lounge entry at $30.
Since there's no way to transfer Virgin Lounge passes you can't really buy or sell them on a secondary market like the classifieds so I think the $30 is a little disingenuous.

That said, I do agree that at $65 per person I wouldn't be buying a lounge pass. Unless you hit the booze you probably won't get $65 of value back out of it in tangible goods (food, drinks, coffee etc) but if you value a quiet place away away from the chaos of the terminal sometimes the lounge can offer this. I like it for generally being away from parents who are letting their kids run amok but at peak flying time the lounge can be just as much of a zoo.

          • +4

@OzBestDeal: why the 100k velocity points on top has been left out as a benefit? wouldn't that easily be worth of $1000 when you book tickets for your family?

            • -6

@WhatsTheBigDeal: Some other cards sign up bonus doesn't have annual fee. Hence I'm questioning if the annual fee worth it or not

              • +1

@OzBestDeal: One card doesn’t have a fee for bonus points (HSBC) and Aeroplan has a limited earning potential in Australia.

This is a good deal and I struggle to see how you’re doubting it.

      • You're conveniently missing the biggest benefit…the 100k velocity points…

        • +1

Whats that worth though, unless you're planning flights during the year seems like you're basically paying $375 for 100k points

  • Offer not available if you hold a supp Amex Platinum?

    • I like to know the answer to this question too.

    • +9

If you are not the main cardholder, this offer is still available to you.

      • Thanks! Nice to know.

  • +6

When you apply by 6 February 2023?

Sweet, I'll go back a year in time.

  • I'd be wary of using this with that 2023 date - might be a typo but also might not be….

  • +24

Also available on Point Hacks with 6 Feb 2024 expiry: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/american-express-…

    And Champagne Mile: https://thechampagnemile.com.au/credit-cards/velocity-freque…

So not exclusive, but a partner offer.

    • Would this deal definitely expire by6 of Feb or it could expire earlier?

  • +8

Any idea if this has a minimum income requirement?

    • Interested as well, also how many payslip do they usually ask and for what duration?

      • +1

One of the guys at work applied for this same card on the 60k points offer a couple of months ago. It was his first ever CC, he's on 70k and picked it up pretty easily. @IslandBreeze can you chime in on the application.

    • +1

See the TMD under financial situation. They seem to do it by ability to repay the minimum amount not by salary, among other things.

    • +3

I was on 65k pa salary and could still get the Platty.

    • Which credit cards don't?

  • +1

Probably a silly question but can these be converted to Qantas points?

    • +1

      No.

      • Fair enough, any decent deals on gift cards? Ultimately I just want 'cash back' from these tricks.

The Qantas ones are good for JB Gift cards, infrequently.

        • +2

With 102 250 points (You'll earn at least 2250 points from the $3000 min spend) you could get a $500 Ultimate Home card + $25 at a stack of different places (including Ultimate Home) or $30 at Bras n Things/Event Cinemas.

Have a look at the Velocity Rewards store to see what you'd be interested in: https://shop.velocityfrequentflyer.com/gift-cards

    • +2

      Yes, using classifieds ;)

  • Been a while since I held a amex. Whats the minimum credit limit on these usually?

    • +1

The Target Market Determination PDF for this product (https://www.americanexpress.com/content/dam/amex/au/pdfs/cre…) which is linked on the AMEX website states that 'The minimum credit limit for this product is $3,000 and consumers are able to
nominate their credit limit(subjectto American Express’ credit approval criteria).'

    • +1

      $3000

  • Does eligible spend include school fees?

If yes I might apply and if approved pay $3K worth of fees straight away

    • +5

Does the school allow payment with Amex?

      • Yes

  • +2

Just got approved for HSBC card yesterday. Would have absolutely gone for this one if I'd seen it beforehand. Dang.

    • You get Gold status Star Alliance

      • -2

Sitting on silver anyways and could probably get gold with these bonus points. But the zero fee and the Aeroplan points are nice

        • +2

Bonus Points is different from miles from flying. You won't move up the ladder by converting CC points.

            • @ninnypoop: You don't earn status credits on rewards flights.

              • @daanish: Oh really? I didn't realise that. I take it back then and I'm happy with the HSBC card.

I haven't flown a reward flight yet. Still kinda new to this. Thanks for the info.

  • I just renewed my explorer card in December. Is there anyway to swap over to get this deal somehow?

    • +1

No. '• Offer not available if you have held an American Express-issued card in the past 18 months.'

  • What are the points worth?

    • Would like to know also!

      • +2

100,000 gets you one way biz to Tokyo with ANA with some change. 67,000 business to Singapore, 75,000 gets you anywhere one way in economy.

        • -1

That doesn't sound that great tbh, how much would it get you in gift cards etc?

          • +1

@alex123711: No idea - the best value redemptions are premium class travel redemptions.

          • +12

            @alex123711: a $1500 fare doesn't sound great?
            + free flight
+4 lounge passes worth ~$25 each

              • +3

@alex123711: ANA is a much better airline than the ones you would get under $500, plus you get 2 bags for check in, rather than 1 (or 0 depending on the airline)

              • +4

@alex123711: You can get a 1 way Business Class fare to Tokyo for under $500?!

                • -8

@Drakesy: Ok, didn't realise it was business class, I guess its worth it if you'd rather fly business etc.

              • @alex123711: wow! I don't think I've ever seen a business flight for under $500 to Tokyo.

          • +3

@alex123711: Lol one can do whatever they like with their points. Considering I got a 7k first class flight from Doha to Perth for just over 100k velocity points + $500 cash, well you tell me where the savings are.

          • @alex123711: Around $5-600 in gift cards

    • +2

      Minimum 1k on classifieds

    • Why do we see these type of comments on EVERY SINGLE deal like this ? A simple google search gives tons of information on what the points are worth and how to spend them.

  • Is there any way to contact AMEX/sign-up for this offer if you are really close to the 18 month anti-churn period? Towards the end of the offer, I'll be <10 days off …

  • Do they do pro rata annual fee refunds if you cancel after getting the points in 3 months? 375 is a bit much.

  • +3

great deal, I'm within the 18 month window so miss out this time, but will get the missus to apply. 100,000 points (albeit velocity) is way better than the 60K on offer with qantas amex presently.

    • +1

The Qantas one for 100k points is listed now (on ozb)

  • Goddamn. Just signed up when there was a +30k offer on the regular sign up of 60k. Should've waited!

  • If I have American Platinum US card, am I also a new Card member when apply this AU card?

  • +3

Points are solid value if flying Business+

    Example
72k pts return to Bangkok from Adelaide plus $350+ taxes

    Let's say $1,100

The flight is $650 each way $1,300.

Not the best use of points.

Business class one way tho is 62k or so + $200 taxes, and the flight is $3,100.

    Let's say you double it, 134k $400 = $1740

    It's much better value!

    • Great, Where do I search how many points it costs per destination? Virgin booking site only shows costs in $$s.

      • +1

Velocity app has the explore tab

    • Business class one way tho is 62k or so + $200 taxes, and the flight is $3,100.

ADL-SIN-BKK one way is 71k VFF + $388 in taxes.

Best value to use these are on UA flights to SFO/LAX because the taxes are low (~$110).

  • Does sign up bonus apply if you've had the Velocity Business AMEX card within last 18 months?

  • Never churned amex before. Tempting.

Always hear amex fees are so high though. Still definitely a profit tho. Any new amexers wanna chime in about how you've found it using compared to mcard/visa feewise, or anything else?

    • +2

Most people who churn credit cards or pay attention to fees would only use Amex in situations where the CC fees are waived/not applied.

In general, I think it's advisable would have a back up Mastercard/VISA In cases where those are preferred, or if the vendor doesn't accept Amex.

    • I'd also like to know about how people have found Amex availability?

    • -1

You dont really churn Amex as a pump and dump kinda card.
Plus the beneftis are decent enough. it's just that there's a long re-wait period to get the boner points again.

The Fee is pre-paid flight basically, so you'd just be sure to book that and try and use the amex loung passes with it soon as you can, the virgin loung passes would stay in your account.
      $375 annual fee.
      • Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight each year.

I've just hit the 18th month or so so going to apply soon for this one..

Amex had some good cashback offers back in the day, haven't seen anything amazing recently but been out of the picture.

      • Can you book complementary return flight for family member?

        • yup, i had done so in previous years so don't see why not now.

  • Can you sign up for this offer and an additional card if you have another amex (e.g. Qantas)? Or does the 18 month thing apply?

    • +1

Not eligible for the sign-up bonus if you've had another Amex card within the last 18 months, including a Qantas or Membership Rewards one.

  • Is there such thing as credit card serviceability check ? (like we have one for home loan)
No point me applying and getting rejected and then getting 120 odd points deducted from my credit score.

    • Yes same credit check as for home loan

      • I get the credit check part.
I am looking for credit card approval/edibility check based on my financial situation.

        • Yes they will check your ability to service based on your income and expenses

          • @illusion99: I was hoping to check "ability to service" myself before applying. Is there any way to find that calculator ?
