  • With $25 max, does it mean to pay for something more than $25, we need to ask for split payments which may be accepted or not, and cannot pay for anything over $25 online at all except those allowing top up like ATO? If so it’s probably not worth the effort imho. The old 10% off Coles gift cards were much more convenient I think.

  • Can these be used the same way as Coles mastercard gift cards?

    • +4

      Not really.

      • Physical Coles Mastercard gift cards are a physical card that you have to swipe in order to redeem for card-present transactions. It is currently not possible to add them to a mobile wallet. You can also use them for card-not-present transactions at merchants who choose to accept them.

      • Digital Coles Mastercard gift cards are a digital-only card that can only be used for card-not-present transactions (which means that they cannot be added to a mobile wallet nor used for card-present transactions).

      • The prepaid gift card in this deal is a digital-only card, so there is no physical card contained within the packaging you buy at ALDI. Instead, you have to use the MicroGifts app to load the funds from the $25 gift card you bought instore onto your prepaid Mastercard gift card. After that, you can either add this prepaid Mastercard gift card onto Apple Pay / Google Wallet for card-present transactions, or obtain the prepaid Mastercard gift card’s details to use for card-not-present transactions.

      • What ? In order to use this digital card, we need the app to load into any prepaid mastercard gc ? I thought no prepaid card is reloadable ?

        • +10

Ahhhhhh let me reword what I said before.

When you go to redeem a Pocket Money gift card in this deal, you will need to download the MicroGifts app and create an account, where a MicroGifts prepaid Mastercard gift card is assigned to your account. Once you scan the QR code within the Pocket Money packaging, $25 will be loaded onto your account. If you scan a second QR code from a second Pocket Money packaging, another $25 will be loaded onto your account, which will mean your prepaid Mastercard gift card has $50 on it.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks

            Makes more sense now 😁

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Wow thanks that makes it even better than Coles mastercard gift cards as you can load as much as you want and use at once (rather than having a limit of $250 and not also being leftover with small amounts at the end) given they are not as much prone to be hacked. My question was more towards if the card can be used for anything without restrictions like any mastercard and I assume that is a yes

            • +2

              @sub102:

that makes it even better than Coles mastercard gift cards as you can load as much as you want and use at once (rather than having a limit of $250 and not also being leftover with small amounts at the end)

The MicroGifts Tokenised Prepaid Mastercard Terms and Conditions lists the available balance limit at $999, so as you can work with that limit in mind, you should be fine.

My question was more towards if the card can be used for anything without restrictions like any mastercard and I assume that is a yes

              That makes more sense. (Sorry.)

Considering this is a new gift card in the consumer space and their terms and conditions do not really mention much about restricted merchants (potentially except gambling transactions), it looks like this is currently less restricted than the Coles Mastercard gift cards or Activ Visa gift cards or any of the other existing prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards I can think of. I am sure as soon as people push the boundaries in terms of where this gift card is used, we will start seeing more restrictions!

          • @WookieMonster: You're a genius Wookie. Thanks. I was about to run away from this deal as being too complicated for my pea-sized brain.
OzB should put u on the payroll!

          • @WookieMonster: Lol mate have you bought these cards previously? I havent even heard of it before the sale.

            • +1

@truetypezk: Someone tipped me off about these gift cards nearly two weeks ago. I spotted them available for purchase a couple of days later.

And yes, I have already purchased one.

  • Great deal OP!

  • +1

even I didnt knew about this until post !.

can say this at least tho ( credit card surcharge would probably still apply regardless of whatever item).
So pay with Debit card, or cash to avoid that surcharge. (unless you have some other reason to be using Credit card for purchase)

    • tsk tsk not a good employee

    • Can we pay with the Westfield EFTPOS card?

      • I have not tried personally or witnessed anyone doing so.
That being said i dont think it is impossible, worth a try if you want to, when you at checkout DO NOT tell cashier you using GC (simply tell em paying by card) and then pay normally,

if it works it will go through fine (most likley as it is a standard EFTPOS card and most restrictions are put by retailers, I am unsure if ALDI put any or not), if it doesn't then just use another card that time.

  • Does it even work $90 for $100 gift card, buy $1000 card and get $100 off??

    • +1

      too many variables

      1. Limit of 4 cards per customer. (depending on operator, and the tech team, and your convencing sklls or you taking another 9 people with you)
      2. Credit card surcharge (unless you pay with Cash/GC/Eftpos/Debit Card)
      3. Avilability on shelf/store
      4. probably some other extra one (that I cant think rn)
      • No variables. They were happy to give me $400 in one hit, 4 transactions. She even says no refund, i was like .. hmmm ok

  • Can I link these to PayPal?

    • Good morning, I’m also interested in this question. This will allow me to pay all bills if they can be. In my experience, so long as I have a 16 digit code, expiry & CCV I can link it. But interested in the OB’s views ?

      • Hi, Just bought some and added to Paypal, was easy.

  • Max 4 cards mean max can purchase $100 get $10off per customer?

  • -1

    Hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha

This is what Aldi CEO doing after reading all comments above because he is waiting to see every single news media out there outside Aldi to cover the Human queue outside every Aldi a day before the deal start in a hope to get this deal but only to realise every Aldi only has 4 card maximum limit ….so free publicity at a cost of $10 per store …. ! What a genius πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜

  • Are these gift cards safe? I remember a while ago there was a debacle with maybe coles gift cards where heaps of them were hacked and people were scammed by a lot of fraudulent transactions.

    • It is best to use these sort of prepaid gift cards as soon as possible, as mentioned here. They are susceptible to being hacked. I presume this would hold true for these Pocket Money gift cards too, because they are Mastercard and digital.

But as long as you plan on using them reasonably soon after purchase, you should be fine.

      • Thanks, saved me the hassle

    • +5

Any prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift card is going to have problems with fraudulent transactions, because it is relatively easy to exploit the shortcomings of the Visa/Mastercard schemes, especially when gift card scheme owners do not (and cannot) employ the fraud prevention/detection capabilities you usually see on debit/credit cards issued by a financial institution.

Considering the gift card in this deal appears to be new product in the consumer space, I think you will be relatively fine to start with, but fraudulent transactions will crop up as soon as nefarious people find out about this prepaid gift card scheme.

I will also point out that if you dispute a transaction, the MicroGifts Tokenised Prepaid Mastercard Terms and Conditions say it will cost you $25. Ouch.

      • +1

Thanks, not worth the risk for me.

  • Thanks OP

  • Are these credit cards? Like the Coles deals? Just prepaid MasterCard gift cards?

    10% off is good.

    $25 is no good tho.

  • Was hoping for amazon cards again. Bought $2k worth last year which is just about to finish πŸ˜“

  • Doesn't look like per store is only allocated $5k worth so far.

  • does anyone know buying these using orange everyday debit card will qualify for 5 monthly transactions as per ING conditions

    • don't see why not. Just make sure they don't route through Visa to avoid surcharge.

      • sorry what u mean….given ING are debit cards so shouldn't be surcharge…I will make sure i insert/swipe card with pin i guess

        • +3

Physical ING debit cards support both Visa and eftpos. ALDI surcharges any payments processed through the Visa network, but does not surcharge any payments processed through the eftpos network. Whether ALDI routes your payment through the Visa or eftpos networks depends on a number of factors. For example:

          • If you tap a physical ING debit card on the NFC reader of the EFTPOS terminal, it is a mystery as to whether your payment will be routed through eftpos or Visa. The default for such tap payments would be Visa, but I have heard of cases where tapping some other physical dual-network cards at ALDI will see it default to eftpos instead.

          • If you insert or swipe a physical ING debit card on the EFTPOS terminal, you can choose between eftpos (SAV), eftpos (CHQ) and Visa (CR). If you present a physical card and you choose SAV or CHQ, your payment will not attract the 0.5% surcharge. If you choose CR, you will get a warning message saying you will have to pay a 0.5% surcharge. You have to press Yes or No before you can continue.

On the other hand, an ING debit card saved to a mobile wallet appears to only support Visa, which means you have to pay the surcharge at ALDI every time.

          I hope that makes sense…

          • +1

@WookieMonster: thanks @WookieMonster. so basically insert/swipe and selecting Savings in best option to avoid ALDI surcharge..

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks mate.

There was some card from memory where we could set the options in wallet(Apple) to chose eftpos or visa. Was it HSBC ?

            • @SydOzber: Westpac, ubank and Commonwealth Bank come to mind.

I am fairly sure that other larger banks also support eftpos on Apple Pay (e.g. NAB, ANZ).

There is this webpage from eftpos with a list of financial institutions supporting eftpos on Apple Pay, but I question its accuracy, because the equivalent webpage for Samsung Wallet does not mention Westpac (and Westpac added support for eftpos on Samsung Wallet a number of months ago).

  • Interesting, so there are no physical cards, so can't use them for e.g.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/811975

  • no you can't .And you cant even get a account started up. It asked for a activation code which never comes

  • +9

Having already grabbed a couple of these gift cards already, here are some initial findings:

    • You can only create a DigitalCash account if you have a Pocket Money gift card to redeem. The inside of the packaging will have a QR code and the instructions on how you go about redeeming the gift card onto your account. Once you scan the QR code, you will need to submit some details (including an Australian mobile number) to claim the gift card. After you submit your details, it can take up to two minutes for the text message with the activation link and access code to be sent to you. Once you follow the link, you will be asked to download the MicroGifts app, then you create an account on there. Make sure to provide the correct mobile number…

    • It looks like you need to use the MicroGifts app on iOS or Android to register an account. I tried creating an account from the MicroGifts website, but that function currently appears to be only for business accounts.

    • Adding additional Pocket Money gift cards to a MicroGifts account is quite straightforward. Once I opened the activation link sent to me via text message, it forwarded me straight to the MicroGifts app, where I only had to tap Add to Apple Wallet to add that gift card to my existing account.

    • If you attempt to redeem a Pocket Money gift card that has already been redeemed, you will load a webpage saying This card has been redeemed.

    • DigitalCash supports Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet. The iOS app has an Add to Apple Wallet button, but the Android app only has an Add to Google Wallet button. If you want to add a DigitalCash card to Samsung Wallet, you will need to add it manually. The MicroGifts app contains your DigitalCash card's details, so you can use it for online purchases or for adding the DigitalCash card manually to a wallet.

    • The ability to send Pocket Money or Spending Money gift cards through the app has just been added, but that attracts a $5.95 purchase fee.

    • The ability to reload a DigitalCash card account using Mastercard, Visa, AMEX or JCB was added a few days ago, but the reload fee can be between $4.10 and $14.20.

    • Thanks for being the Guinea pig and as always the detailed explanation is really appreciated. Just wondering if adding additional Pocket Money gift cards to a MicroGifts account increases the gift card balance of the same gc or it adds another $25 GC?
      TIA

      • +2

Ahhh the wording in my comment is confusing again!

When you create a MicroGifts account, your account is assigned a DigitalCash card that has the balance of the Pocket Money gift card you just redeemed.

When you redeem another Pocket Money onto your existing MicroGifts account, the balance is added to the same DigitalCash card.

        For example:

        • If you create a MicroGifts account to redeem a $25 Pocket Money gift card, your MicroGifts account will be assigned a DigitalCash card with $25 on it.

        • If you redeem a second $25 Pocket Money gift card onto your existing MicroGifts account, your DigitalCash card's balance will increase to $50.

        • If you redeem a third $25 Pocket Money gift card onto your existing MicroGifts account, your DigitalCash card's balance will increase to $75, etc etc etc.

Your DigitalCash card's details do not change when you redeem more and more Pocket Money gift cards to your MicroGifts account. In another sense, Pocket Money gift cards are what you use to top up a single DigitalCash card.

Awesome! That’s a good one then as I will be able to make 1 big payment rather than multiple small payments. Thanks again Wookie.

    • Need to call and request a pin. If attempting to spend big. No "Set your pin" option.

      • So that means we need to do multiple $99 transactions to clear out a big card? Probably easier than calling to request an one time PIN. Not sure if they are going to block the card after a couple of $99 transactions though.

        • Please email [email protected] with your details including your first & last name, email address, mobile number & date of birth. We will then verify your identity with our processor & send you a link to set up your PIN.

Seems like its email but I am going to call because prefer not to leave a digital footprint.

        • Why $99?

If the EFTPOS terminal you are at supports CDCVM (Consumer Device Customer Verification Method), you should never be asked for a PIN for a purchase transaction. For example, I paid for 4x $250 Coles Mastercard gift cards at Coles using my AMEX on a mobile wallet earlier this year (which cost $925.20), and when I tapped my mobile wallet on the EFTPOS terminal, Coles attempted to charge my AMEX without asking for a PIN or signature.

          Some exceptions to note:

          • My understanding is that if the EFTPOS terminal does not support CDCVM and you attempt to make a contactless transaction from a mobile wallet, you should be asked to provide a PIN or signature as soon as you tap your mobile wallet against the EFTPOS terminal.

          • If you are doing a refund transaction, you should always be asked for a PIN or signature. For example, I once did a $7 refund transaction at Woolworths and tapped my mobile wallet against the EFTPOS terminal, but I was still asked for a PIN or signature. The customer before me at the Woolworths service desk tapped their mobile wallet to pay for over $100 worth of tobacco products and was not asked for a PIN nor signature.

          • If you have a Samsung device old enough to support MST and the EFTPOS terminal registers the simulated swipe from the MST antenna before it registers the contactless data from the NFC antenna, your transaction will be processed as a swipe transaction rather than a contactless transaction, which means CDCVM goes out the window. Whether the EFTPOS terminal asks for a PIN or signature will depend on the limits set for swipe transactions.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Ah right, I forgot this is a digital card. Yeah it shouldn't require the PIN in this case, at least not for our use cases.

          • @WookieMonster: I tried adding 2nd and 3rd card, clicked on the link received via SMS it took me to the app's home screen…the bal didn't update…what am I doing wrong?
Tried again and one of the cards worked - the bal got updated. for the 3rd card - it keeps saying its been redeemed….wt…f..

  • This seems like a cluster. Just do the 10% off Amazon for god sake!

    • Where is the 10% off Amazon gift card? Aldi?

      • Nowhere, that's just what he'd prefer… (Aldi have had 10% off Amazon before).

    • Coles??

  • Can you pay with activ supermarket card?

  • At an ALDI
and it's scanning at full price, poor guys have no idea
Showed em the catalogue and they are confused

  • Just picked up four at my local aldi. Scaned at $22.50 and was easy.

    • +2

Easy to scan but awful to activate and such a convoluted app. One would think that they would have a "Add Card" button to your account once set-up on the app. As it stands, to activate:
      - One has to scan the Barcode which then takes one to their site.
      - Then fill in your details to receive an SMS.
      - Then click on the SMS link to take you to your account to add to your wallet.

The cards and total balance then shows up there…….max of 5 card activations allowed in one day. I grabbed x8. Agh, now need to wait until tomorrow to do remaining three.

      • Yes, the activation process is very clumsy. And annoying about the max 5 cards allowed.

      • was you able to add multiple cards to the same account? I can't figure it out.

        • Yeap. One card at a time i.e. as per above steps. The total in the App increases and each card can be viewed separately.

          • @Borg: When I click on the link, it opened the app, then nothing. I couldn't add another card to the app.

            • @T-man: Perhaps close app and try again?.

              • @Borg: All good now, thank you.

  • Can we turn around to coles and immediately buy gift cards with these

    • +2

Yep. then head to JBHIFI for Apple

      • The infinite money glitch!

        • And then get an extra Apple gift card for their promotion.

  • can you use this one prezze?

  • +2

It seems like there is a daily limit of 5 card redemptions for these gift cards

    • Yep, just found this out

    • Do you mean adding them into wallet?

      • Yeah, like after scanning the qr code and going through the texted link

    • Customer support told me. Only 4 cards can be redeemed per account during the promotional period. I was like please explain?

  • Anyone having issues getting the SMS confirmation code from the microgifts app when creating an account? It's asking for the activation code on the same form that you enter your mobile number, seems like a really poor design.

    • +1

Scroll down the SMS, the code is at the bottom.

    • all good, I didn't read the instructions properly.

  • Not able to add a card…called customer support - they can' t take my call right now!!

    • does it say why?

      • +1

no - just a generic msg. but was surprised when I got a call back from them in next 5-7mins…excellent support!!
they regenerated the link for one of my cards…it still didn't work…asked me to logout/login of the app and it finally worked…

  • lucky didn't bought it … it isn't worth .. !

  • Use shopback supermarket cards to pay for these to get an additional 2.25% cashback.

    • do keep in mind the $400 restriction and the associated cool off period as its an Activ Visa Card…

      • I was able to go with my family to multiple Aldis and paid with shopback supermarket cards and in total purchased more than $1000 worth of these using this method.

        • That's great…the restriction is limited to one store/terminal etc…so you were able to buypass by hopping onto other stores..

        • Is their any fees at Aldi when paying with the ShopBack supermarket card ?
