When do we start the forum discussion about which cases and screen protectors everyone is getting? Spigen all the way?

  • Can someone please confirm if the invoice is showing any line for the phone for the warranty purposes.

    • +2

Yes mine does, it seems to have everything you'd expect, just with a $0.00 value. Even quotes 24 month manufacturer warranty.

      • Thanks @matictac

  • Picked up my 256gb black model from Capalaba at 12pm today. I ordered on Tuesday,

    Great guys in there.

My mate who ordered yesterday also picked his up today as well.

Also porting from Mate to Optus and it still hasn't ported over from Tuesday.. Anyone else having this problem?

    • Yes my partner ported from Woolworths mobile to Optus on Tuesday, still hasn't got changed and her phone is available for pick up now. Logged into her Optus account and it says there is no active service.

      • Apparently it was a date of birth issue for me, well so they were saying, they are doing the port again. Hopefully it works.

        • If you collect the phone but the porting process doesn't go through I wonder what happens then..

          • @zammr: Free phone..? 🤞

          • @zammr: They won't give you the phone without successful port lol

            • @CodeXD: But as someone has mentioned, HN doesn't know any more once the sign up is completed and your receipt is printed. My partner got the call this morning that her phone is ready, so we'll soon find out after work.

              • @zammr: Oh interesting… I assumed 'sign up completed' means successful port.

Hope it all goes well for you/your partner.

            • @CodeXD: I do have the phone and my number hasn't been ported. I also told them that at HN and they just said to go to optus

              • @adamshere: Hey any update on your porting, has it gone through yet? Still haven't had anything happen since.

                • @zammr: Nothing on my end mate.. I've given up and will continue to use my mate Sim.. if Optus try to charge me for using Optus I will challenge it

    • +1

Always best to port to Telstra/Voda first to save this from happening. I did Gomo - Boost - then Optus at HN in space of half hr.

    • +1

I'm with mate as well and there was supposedly a date of birth error too. I contacted them and they said my dob was fine. However when I ported at H.N we put down that it was a prepaid plan, but it's actually a month to month post paid plan. Mate gave me a port out code and I contacted h.n and they are trying it again. Hopefully it works

      • yup sounds exactly like my problem. I told them it was pre paid and they said they will request it again, but its been about 5 hours and still nothing.. I will ask for a port out code. Has it worked for you?

      • mate ONLY has postpaid, so if you try port as a prepaid, it fails from Mate's side

      • Have you got it fixed on your end? I spent a few days trying to talk to optus but they are useless.. So i'm currently with Mate and wont be paying my bill until optus can sort something out. I'm sick of chasin git up now

  • What is the advantage of getting the phone and then cancelling the deal with Optus?

It costs you $830 to cancel

$830 over 24 months is $34.50 per month, so even if you were to take up a $29 per month plan elsewhere you're literally only saving $5 a month by doing this.

The only thing that I could make sense of is if people were doing this and then selling the phones to make money, but if you're wanting to actually use the phone then you're not really saving anywhere near enough to even make it worthwhile to do.

    • +2

Instead of paying 1699 (128GB) or 1799 (256GB), we pay 828 or 928 respectively outright

I just ported out to a $2 sim to cancel the optus service and will just be paying the cancellation cost and continue to use my existing service which is around $40/month which is also part of a bundle deal I have + I have esim for watch (Numbershare).

You can be 2 minds about it.
      1. Pay it outright instead of per month, may be higher than current plan
      2. Pay monthly cost of the contract and move number over

Personally, I get my phones outright and dont get locked in to 24/36 contracts anymore because I'm fine paying outright for my devices.

    • +3

People might be in the middle of a contract already, or might prefer prepaid or cheaper plans. For me, it's all of the above. I have a Boost sim that has 10 months left on it. It cost me $220, or < $19 a month.

    • you might have calculated wrongly? over the 24month, it is $69 a month. you only get 50% off as you are terminating contract earlier.

      • They're saying with cancellation, the effective price is $34.5 per month, but then you need a service with someone anyway so getting the cheapest $29 per month plan elsewhere only saves $5.5 per month with much less data.

          • @CodeXD: I know and they know. That's not at all what we're saying.

If you take option one and cancel, you either have a disconnected phone or you pay someone else for a service.

Unless you have an existing service and are after a new phone.

Cost difference between keeping the plan, or terminating early and getting 2x12 month boost plans is $368, or $15.33 per month.

It's a decent saving but not worth it for everyone.

            • @Ranike: Ah I see what you mean.

Hopefully people have worked out the best value plan for them which may actually be to hold onto the plan instead of cancelling. I know a lot of people are on yearly plans from $120~ to $240.

              • @CodeXD: Yeah for sure makes sense to keep those plans if that's what works best. Makes this deal a pretty cheap upgrade for a flagship phone.

        • +1

oh true..i am on circles.life 10 bucks plan…i guess good to have extra data but i dont want to pay so much for the data i dont use

          • @overlook: That's pretty decent and makes sense to terminate early and keep your current plan! Too bad these companies keep axing their cheaper plans… Used to be plenty of options around.

Click the arrow to the right hand side to scroll the plans over, medium plan is $250 for 365 days, includes 260GB data and the data can bank up to 200GB so months that you don't use it the data isn't wasted.

          https://www.lebara.com.au/prepaid-plans/long-expiry/medium-3…

          From the CIS:

260GB total data to use in Australia, split into 30-day blocks of 21.67GB (data sessions rounded to the nearest KB) which is replenished every 30 days.

Basically 20GB/month with unlimited calls/text for $20.80/month. You save about $15/month compared to keeping the plan which is $360 over 24 months.

    • -2

My point too! The actual value from the service is AMAZING.

I pay $45 with Vodafone! Everyone cancelling can't be on some tight ass $5 sim! I know alot of people have no life, but yeah!

      • I've got an amaysim 10gb pm, unlimited calls & messages for $110 per year

    • Work pay for my Sim plan, I can chuck it in whatever device I like.

    • Not having to use Optus.

256GB Bay ordered on 8 October in WA. Received a call this morning that their initial allocation was small and that there's a wait of 2-3 weeks due to the huge demand. :-(

Was offered Obsidian as an alternative, arriving in the next day or two. Looks like HN and moving stock between stores to try and satisfy demand. Best of luck WA peeps!

    • I am guessing same scenario is in Victoria as well.

      • +1

Agree. Based on what I've read here Bay is the most popular and in 256GB. I switched colours and will buy a blue case to make up for it lol

  • I just called the HN store in Victora to get the update on my pre-order and they said wait time for Pixel 8 Pro(256GB) in Bay is upto 2 weeks and can be more.

Is it the stock allocation that bad ? I thought they should have atleast orders ready for any pre-orders made.

    • It's just a popular release, it happens.

    • Popular release, and also being this deal, cheaper than everywhere without having to pay back vouchers if cancelled, or no prereq like trade-in
which is why a lot of people are having orders delayed from HN.

If you got in early or at a store where they had enough allocation, at least up until the weekend, then launch day pickup would be possible.

I ordered mine on saturday in mount gravatt, I was told upfront that I could be on the second shipment possibly (256 porcelain) but I called up this morning and they had mine allocated and ready to pick up (in my hands right now)

      • I'm not sure why people don't understand that they can also request an item be held for them in advance. I called up and they said they'd hold it for me for when I came in on the 16th to actually do the purchase.

    • People pre-ordered yesterday and wanted to pick it up today lol

How do they have time to order more stock in under 24 hours.

  • +3

Just picked up my Bay P8P 256gb from HN Bondi. I've ordered on Tuesday. In and out 5 mins. I didn't ask if they have plenty. By the way, hate that carpark.

  • Anyone know if it's possible to sign up at one store and pick up at another that has stock?

    • +4

      Why don't you ask them…

  • Anyone purchased more than one device at the same time? Asking if the "free" phone needs seperate purchases, since it says up to five, or you are able purchase up to five at once.

    • You can, a guy on the previous page did just that. So that would be 1 hit (albeit larger cost) on your credit rather than 5 if that is where you were going with this.

      • I saw that, the member hasn't cancelled though. Someone else mentioned two, however the other was for their wife.

Don't mind the credit. The sales rep also mentioned four for me today.

Keen to hear about someone who has cancelled more than one.

    • You purchase plans, not devices. Each new connection (either port in or new number) will be eligible for a "gift" device, but subject to your credit limit + credit check with Optus.

    • -2

If you read through the plethora of comments and replies on this post, you wouldn't need to ask this question

    • I didn't.. but when the guy did the credit check he said the computer said I could order 4 more if I wanted to.. was tempted for a second.

    • I got 5 to sell on gumtree no problem. 👍

  • For those keeping the phone, has anyone been able to get a monthly discount on gift card plans? Usually you just have to ask to cancel and they throw discounts at you. I've tried with the pixel 7 Pro gift card deal from last year and eventually got a response of "we can't offer discounts on gift card plans".

    • Got offered $29/mth that can "be activated on my account" after I pay the initial $69/mth. Think I'll just wait for a decent year long deal and port out.

      • That's cheaper than cancelling isn't it? 29 a month for 24 is $696 vs $830.

        • Thats a new plan, they dont/cant replace this promotion plan, which mean you still have to use/cancel this Pixel 8 plan.

      • What did you say to get offered that

    • +2

Couple posts in this thread say they got offered cheaper plans but turn out Optus offer a new plan on top of when you cancel the current one + fee, so no one out of their mind accept that.

      • Ah yeah, so same to my experiences then. They're able to offer discounts on new plans but not on gift card plans. No point in going to a cheaper Optus plan.

    • I've mentioned this a few pages ago and others have achieved mixed success. In my case I cited 'financial difficulties' and was offered on the existing plan…

      • 1 x $54 for the first month
      • 12 x $52.10 for the following 12 months (10% off plus a credit applied to each bill).

I've taken a screen shot of the chat to cover myself however the $15 discount for the first month has been applied.

Has anyone noticed "Smart Compose" missing from the Message settings? I just checked and its supposed to be available in Australia but doesn't appear on my settings. I was interested because I'm a pretty bad txt'er. On the flipside, Google's Message app looks like ass so I'll go back to my usual, Textra in the meantime.

Another little tidbit. I installed my glass screen protector on today and the finger print reader works PERFECTLY. My expectations were that it would be comparable to my Huawei P30 Pro it replaced since they're using the same tech, but it's noticeably faster. So screen protector didn't impact it at all. I did end up turning on the mode for having installed a screen protector but it worked fine either way.

Early observations, it sure does charge SLOOOOOWLY, I'm used to the 2019 fast charge tech in my Huawei phone. I'll adjust though, not too bothered by it :)

    • What material is the protector? Do you have a link? Are you still having zero issues with fingerprint reader and how fast is it actually?

What's screen on time and battery life like at the moment?

      • +1

I just checked, my screen protector is now out of stock, but honestly any cheap one on there is likely identical - they're all going to come out of the same Chinese factory. Just pick up one for $10-15 and for that you should get 2-3 protectors, always handy in case you stuff up or it simply gets damaged over time.

Fingerprint zero issues. Works in like ~0.5 second or so, hard to accurately measure it but to me it's fast (bare in mind I'm coming from a 4 year old phone).

I can't comment on screen and battery time today as I've been smashing it in a non-typical kind of way (setting everything up for several hours) and it's at 56% so I would have to say it feels pretty decent so far but you'd need to hear from someone who's been using - youtube, game, camera, image editing etc, I have done none of that yet.

  • +2

Picked up with no issues. Turns out cancelling the plan has no affect and HN doesn't know at all

    • +1

Just like many of us were saying over the weekend. HN's business starts and ends in those 10-15 minutes it takes to organise the purchase. Everything that happens after that is none of their business, nor knowledge.

All these people stressing themselves out needlessly and having pointless conversations with HN about their intentions to cancel the plan. Conversations with the very people who stand to gain by keeping us signed up for a minimum of 3 months (commissions), it's no wonder they lied to the customer in 101 different ways.

Less is more, it never came up at my HN and if it did I would have played dumb.

Rant aside, I'm glad it all worked out for you. I got mine today too :)

  • HN Alexandria told me there was even no P8P 256GB Bay colour allocation at their store today. Looks like I still need to wait a bit longer :'( Hate this waiting game tho!

  • +1

Went to HN Osborne Park. I mentioned I will take P8P 256 GB on 69 HN Optus plan. He showed me that he has 6 in black and 4 cream but have to pay $100 extra and I said okay. Then he said let me check with manager if we have enough stock and I said I can wait for the stock to come then he went to check with a guy sitting in far corner and came back . Oh! Optus portal is down for the new number if you want port then we can look into it. Funny enough another guy (W) came for the same deal and his was getting it processed. Felt like being Asian is not ideal in getting deals in WA and walked out. Cool story that happened today. Hope I will survive not getting a Pixel LoL.

    • +1

      oh wow

      interesting….

you could try another store or just grab a cheap $2 sim and then tell them you changed your mind and port that over

so many different experiences for a lot of people at Hardly Normal

    • +1

What utter BS. You should have called them out. If they can access the portal then I can't imagine one specific function is conveniently inaccessible.

    • +1

call them out, or just give the sale to another store who will do it without any hassle

  • Hey guys when you order do they give you any documentation that states the phone is to be collected at a later date? Not that I don't trust them, mind you……

    • +1

I just got a recept on saturday staging the following:

GOOGLE PIXEL 8 PRO 256GB PORCELAIN Discounted Outright SIM Only (New)
Status: Incomplete Carrier: OPTUS MOBILE PTY LTD (TRD POSTPAID)

      Other Details
Pickup to be Advised STOCK B/O from Store/Store

      • thanks!

  • +4

I signed up today and collected the phone in-store. Then got onto Optus Chat within an hour and cancelled. Got it in writing that my final bill will be for exactly $828. I don't have to pay the first month of the plan

    • Well played!

  • Has anyone been successful in cancelling and only paying the $828? I'm on live chat currently and I'm being told I have to pay for the first month in full. I preordered the phone two days ago for context.

    • +2

If you want to only pay $828 you need to cancel same day you sign up to the plan.

    • Have you read any of the 17 pages of comments?

    • +2

As CodeXD said. There's a ~24 hour window (probably less), thus the 'car park cancellation' approach.

That said you shouldn't have to pay a full $69 either, I heard most reporting a half month was due, so look into that. You won't get out of this for $828 anymore though, that ship has sailed.

      • +1

I agree that ship has sailed. I cancelled my plan just today and offered me $25 off for first 12 months but did not budge on waiving off the first bill.

    • carry the $2 port out sim and do a port out as soon as out of the store.

  • +1

Got the last P8P (of any size and colour) at Broadway.

No more stock until google ships new ones

  • +2

Only got onto this deal earlier today, went to my local (Rothwell) without a pre-order, they seemed to have plenty of stock. 15 minutes or so instore, walked out with the phone, and cancelled via live chat when I got home, confirmed I'll only be paying $828. Surprisingly easy.

Guy at HN mentioned there was a deal on "OzzyBargain" about signing up and cancelling, I said that could be why I was there, and he said "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that", before we finalised everything though he did say that he thought Optus could crack down on that type of thing, and he double checked the crticial info for me to try help me avoid any pain. Nice guy.

    • +1

Bahaha yeah HN folk are absolutely aware of it. More surprised Optus isn't forcing HN to crack down, considering they apparently don't make any extra money off the deal unless sign-ups stay on the plan for 3 months minimum. I can't imagine many of them care.

    • +2

My local was rothwell and had preordered. I didnt mention the ozb deal but he did seem to hint that he knew something as he kept asking if this would be my primary number and if i needed to see about cancellation. His name started with a C (wont post here). He said they hadnt sold as many as they thought they would and also said they had plenty of stock.
So if anyones in BNE and looking for one, HN Rothwell have some :)

      • I also dealt with C, I might've prepped him for you haha.

  • Does anyone know where to get a screen protector ASAP in Sydney?
