nbn FTTN to FTTP Upgrade: 100/20 $64.95/M, 100/40 $74.95/M | nbn FTTC to FTTP Upgrade: 250/25 $89/M for 12Mo (Expired) @ Leaptel

980

I was checking Leaptel NBN plans, 100/20 $64.95/Month and 100/40 $74.95/Month for first 12 months sound very attractive. Tried to Sign up, but 100/20 lists $74.95 for my address. Online chats saying this is only available for the people who is upgrading from FTTN to FTTP.

For FTTC to FTTP you have to signup to 250/25 $89/Month or 500/50 $99/Month. Expired. New lower prices

My house already has FTTP. Not sure if there is any other charge as I stop reading and going forward. Please leave comments if people need extra caution.

Tangerine has the same deal. No discount for HFC.

    • Leaptel vs Tangerine, experiences/recommendations?

      • +11

I have been with both recently and strongly recommend Leaptel over Tangerine.

On top of the service quality, Leaptels deal is for a full year.

        • +2

This. Coming to the end of 12m unfortunately. Constantly get 106Mbps for a 100 plan.

          looking for next HFC deal.

          • @G-rig: Unfortunately Leaptels new customer promo terms are a full year since last with them.

            • +1

@Jimbuscus: A year is great so you don't have to move every 6 months. Suppose may consider tangerine next

              • +2

@G-rig: As in you won't be eligible for another promo price with Leaptel, until you have been away from them for 12 months, so 2x 6m elsewhere.

                • +2

@Jimbuscus: Yes that's pretty standard but 12m is better (same good price and don't have to worry about churning for double the time).

                • @Jimbuscus: Current customer here, Leaptel just gave me another 12 months promo price with this FTTN to FTTP upgrade.

              • @G-rig: Its always worth reaching out to our team and seeing whether we can extend the promo for you. We may not be able to, I can't make that guarantee, but a quick chat with us on livechat might result in you keeping the promo for 6 or 12 months.

                • @LeaptelRep: Yes thankyou I am meaning to do that as I can't fault the connection or the customer service, and don't mind telling everyone so :)

        • +1

Now only 6m and price gone up: https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-plans/

      • I left within a few days of being with Tangerine (Brisbane HFC) after ‘upgrading’ to a 250/25 plan with them, no complaints with Leaptel so far.

      • I'm with Tangerine as they did the FTP upgrade for me. The 250/25 connection is fast and when working, brilliant.
Over last two weeks I'm getting constant drops, the tech support has been responsive, I jump on the live chat and speak to tech support (Hi Mark) almost instantly.
NBN keeps reporting no issues despite Tangerine seeing multiple port failures. Unsure if this is a tangerine issue or NBN issue but i'm very close to switching provider to find out as it's impacting WFH

        • +1

If you are on FttP just connect with Launtel for a few days on one of the other 3 UNI-D ports to test this out, and you'll soon work out if it's NBN or Leaptel.
I mention Launtel as you only need to pay for the days you are connected (per day charging).
Just an idea without impacting your Leaptel connection on UNI-D 1.
Also, do you have another router? Just to eliminate this as a possible issue causing dropouts.

      • Was on leaptel 500 which was fine and just swapped to tangerine 1000 which is also fine. Definitely notice the faster upload speed. Got speed tracker running every 3 hours and the history shows it’s usually over 900 with 9pm being peak sometimes dropping to “only” 6-800. Friend just did the ABB upgrade to 1000 and his speed tracker hovers around 4-500. I’m using a dream machine pro and he’s using a ubiquity edge router. Work all day for US so stability is main thing and had no issues with either provider.

        • Are you comparing peak speeds for you and your friend on the same tech, as in both on FttP? If comparing FttP with HFC, that likely has nothing to do with the ISP (on the HFC service).
Really only FttP vs FttP with different ISP's is a fair comparison.

          • @SimAus007: Both fttp gigabit plans as in he just upgraded to fttp on abb. Comparing average speeds using Speedtest logger at 3 hourly intervals 0,3am,6am etc etc

      • I’m with Tangerine at the moment. Just switched and I keep getting drop outs. It’s not on the NBN side, but seems to be on the network side. I lose my IP address and I get a message on my router saying something like can’t reach PPPoE server or something.
I can reconnect if I turn my router off and back on but sometimes it disconnects after a minute or two. I’ve tried with a different router and it’s the same issue. I’ve never had these issues with my previous ISP (Pentanet and Australia Post Broadband) with these routers so I’m stumped as to what the issue is.
I’m looking at switching away already and haven’t even been with Tangerine for a month.

This issue also seem to resolve itself over time. Sometimes after half a day, sometimes after a day. It’s a nightmare when the kids need to use their iPads for school homework that requires internet…

Their support is also pretty slow at responding when you submit a ticket (because this happens out side of their tech support hours as well) and sometimes they take 2 days to reply via a call. The best help I’ve gotten from their tech support was them sending me a link to a PDF with a list of their supported routers.

        • Did a router reset. If your having problems with pppoe try using ipoe tho the problem was usually the other way around

    • Tangerine appears to be 6 months. This appears to be 12 months.

    • i switched to Tangerine couple of months ago with same $64 one, didnt charge extra and we already have FTTP

  • +3

    That is just confusing

  • +3

I'm with leaptel. I will leave them soon. So far they haven't paid any referral bonus after I had a few family sign up. Also had a few referrals from ozbargain as well but can't confirm whether they stayed with leaptel.

    • The referral system with Leaptel is a joke, they automatically apply this pricing and it's ineligible for the referral bonus. They shouldn't advertise a referral bonus at all.

      • Our referral system gives $50 to the referrer and $50 to the referee, but yes if there is a promo on the plan then the referee does not get the $50 bonus. This is outlined in our T&Cs at https://leaptel.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Leaptel-Refer-a-Fr…

        • -8

Yeah I know, which is why you don't really have a referral program now do you.

          • +5

@Jimbuscus: The referrer always gets $50 no matter what options the person chooses.

So yes we do have a referral program.

    • +2

Same here. Referred like 6-7 from ozbargain and received zilch from Leaptel. 1-2 more months and adios for behaving like that. I am certain they tracked properly, at least some of them.

      • I am confident our RAF program works correctly but if you have any concerns please speak to our team to get them to check. Bear in mind that the people you refer have to have paid their second invoice for the credit to apply.

Please note as per our T&Cs, listing the code via a public website such as OzBargin is a clear violation of our T&Cs and we will remove your referrals if we believe this is the case. But if we had done that we would have told you. https://leaptel.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Leaptel-Refer-a-Fr…

    • +1

I received two referrals but thenb they revoked future referral for my account because apparently the link was published on a public site (ozbargain referral system), so be warned.

    • I've had the same thing happen… But as Jim said, I think the 'promo' pricing automatically invalidates any referral.

They should consider removing the referral system.

      • The referral system gives $50 off to the referrer no matter whether there is a promotion or not.

If there is a promotion on the order, then the person referred does not get $50 off as well as they're getting a promotional offer.

The $50 to the referrer is provided as a credit once the referred customer pays their second month's invoice. It is applied to your next bill.

If you think you have a referral code owing that hasn't been provided please contact our support team.

We issue hundreds of referral bonuses each month so the system does work.

Please note - listing your referral code on a public website, including through the OzBargin private message referral system is a violation of the T&Cs of the referral program. If we identify that this has occurred we will cancel your referrals for abuse of the system. With the current system on OzBargin it's very difficult for us to identify this has occurred and we've only had to speak to a couple of people about this.

The full T&Cs for the program are here - https://leaptel.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Leaptel-Refer-a-Fr…

        • @LeapTel, urgh, my understanding was nobody got the referral bounty if a 'promo' plan was taken up. I still referred a friend, his service went live about 4 days ago - is it too late for him to submit me as his referrer?

    • If you think you have a referral code owing that hasn't been provided please contact our support team.

We issue hundreds of referral bonuses each month so the system does work.

  • I'm with Telstra Velocity, I have to wait a year to be able to change from Telstra. Leaptel seem to be good, they will be the first ones I leap to (pun intended) when Telstra switches Velocity to Opticomm.

  • How to check what NBN do I have in terms of FTTN, FTTP, etc

    • +2

Look up your address at NBN co.

  • They have been rolling out FTTP in my area. I check fequently but there is no update to NBN co saying I if I can get FTTP (from FTTN) Is there anywhere I can check on when the area upgrade is supposed to be complete? I assume the whole area will be comissioned as a big bang when it does go live?

    • +1

Sometimes there is an ETA on here. If no ETA comes up you have to keep waiting.

    • +1

I assume the whole area will be comissioned as a big bang when it does go live?

You would think so, right? That would have been the sensible way to do it. Instead, when they upgrade your area they just put the hardware in your area to support fibre connections and then every time someone signs up they send out a team to pull/connect the fibre for your house. It's like deciding that your front lawn needs a mow, so calling the lawn mower, then later deciding that the side is a bit long and calling him again, and then again later for the back. Of course it's going to cost more than just getting it all done at once.

  • +1

Pretty annoying that you have to pay more if already on fttp

    • Yeah, my Superloop discount finished end of this month. Pretty excited to see Leaptel 100/20 $64.95 (read a lot of good comments about them), end up not available to FTTP.

      • Tell Superloop you are leaving because the discount is finishing. They should offer the discount forever.

    • Blame NBN who offered the discount to upgraders. Leaptel are just passing it. They could have just pocketed the money so kudos to them.

  • +1

I’m with Leaptel and don’t recommend it. The connection is not stable enough to warrant the cheaper price. I was with AussieBB and would highly recommend anyone still choosing.

    • +1

My connection with Leaptel is equal to AussieBB. Just Aussie is a bigger, more professional company.

      • +1

'Bigger' doesn't always mean more professional - I'm looking at you Telstra !!

        • But ABB in comparison to leaptel it is certainly true

    • +2

Change from IPoE to PPPoE and your connection will be stable. They are sorting out the IPoE issues tho and might have already

      • +1

This is true and set MTU 1480 and it's rock solid.

      • +1

        Hi Dezeption,

I am confident our IPoE is pretty robust now. Matt is pretty open on Whirlpool about the factors at play and the personal steps he has taken as the owner and head of our network team to get to the bottom of it.

    • Isn't it the same wire thuogh?
Edit: apparently not looking at another post as well

    • Exactly the same here - am pretty disappointed but I guess you gotta cut costs somewhere to make it cheaper

I had maybe 2/3 outages with Aussie and Superloop on FTTP over 2.5yrs - since I joined Leaptel 2 months ago I'm up to 6 so far (and they've all been for 6hrs+)

      • Aaaand surprise surprise - down again for "Planned Maintenance"

        • Probably doing some works in your area - check the nbn co page.
Mine has been flawless since joining Leaptel.
It's only as good as your connection (i'm on HFC and never any issues with any providers)

          • @G-rig: Nope - nothing was listed on the nbn co outage page OR any other carrier - just Leaptel

I have FTTP - there's no issues on my side - just theirs

If it was an NBN outage, totally understand, but it's not, it's 100% Leaptel

            • @lachhelix: Hi lachhelix,

Can you send me your details via private message so I can look into this as that is too many planned maintenances and shouldn't be happening. So I would like to understand the circumstances.

      • Surely we are missing out on some of the story? If LeapTel was down 6 times over 2 months for 6+ hours per outage I'm pretty sure I'd have read about it.
Are the outages you've experienced local to you only? What trouble shooting have you done?

        • +1

I haven't had any contact from the customer, but I am aware of some nbn POIs where our backhaul provider has had some overnight planned maintenance on multiple nights in a week or month. Eg. from 11pm - 12pm onwards.

We are doing all we can to put pressure on our provider to decrease the amount of maintenance and put in alternate paths so that when maintenance is required services continue to operate.

        • Turns out it was 5 "notified" outages - it has dropped a few times late at night but can't be certain those few times are related to the carrier, and 6hrs is my averaging it out.

I assume they're only local to particular links/exchanges

          Outage start time & date: 03/05/2023 23:00

          Outage finish time & date: 04/05/2023 07:00

          Outage start time & date: 07/05/2023 23:00

          Outage finish time & date: 08/05/2023 07:00

          12/5/23

          Outage start time & date: 19/05/2023 00:30

          Outage finish time & date: 19/05/2023 04:30

          Outage start time & date: 16/05/2023 23:00

          Outage finish time & date: 17/05/2023 07:00

          • +1

@lachhelix: Thanks for sharing that. I think based off your outages that you're on the Cranbourne POI (3CBN). All our backhaul is provided by Field Solutions Group who use a mixture of Optus and Telstra fibres, and in the cause of 3CBN it is Optus. Optus uses alot of aerial fibre, and we're being told due to all the infrastructure work ongoing in Melbourne's south-east that Optus is frequently having to relocate fibres, and at times its hitting both paths back from the POI (it has redundant infrastructure).

With that said we're not happy about this and appreciate that it does impact our customers even if it is occurring late in the evening / early morning. We've specifically raised 3CBN's backhaul situation and have been told it is a priority for adding Telstra in as an additional redundant path.

So I apologise for the disruption you've experienced, noting that it seems to be something specific to your POI and that we're doing what we can to mitigate it in the future.

            • @LeaptelRep: No worries - like I commented somewhere in the post, you are providing a service at a considerably cheaper cost than the others so I'm not holding it against you, just my use case probably suits an AB/SL connection in the future. Like you said, they do occur late so most people probably wouldn't notice, but unfortunately for me I'm practically a vampire and am up most of the night 😂

              • +2

@lachhelix: I appreciate your understanding but its not good enough from our perspective. There's always going to be some degree of planned maintenance, but multiple times a month for a single POI is unacceptable. We need to out-perform our competitors not be excused because we may currently have some cheaper pricing. We will get the problem impacting 3CBN sorted.

    • +1

Yep same thoughts. Frequently outages and quite unreliable since switching that I never had with superloop or exetel. Support was hopeless and refused to discuss anything besides a bridge tap.

      • Hi Milkywayss,

Can you send me a private message with your details and I'll have a personal look at your tickets and get it escalated to a team lead. If you're having dropouts then we need to get to the bottom of it.

    • What location/NBN technology type?

    • Hi voldemort,

Can you please drop me a message with your details and I will personally look into your service and get it escalated for someone to have a look at what is going on.

I recently moved from ABB 100/40 to Leaptel 500/50 plan and have no complaints so far (HFC).

    • I'm on HFC too and wondering if you really get close to 500mbps download?

      • You can get around 950Mbps on HFC.

      • +1

The highest speed I have achieved on the plan is 550Mbps

  • Anyone go from exetel nbn50 to leaptel nbn100?

  • +1

When leaving Leaptel, do you need to give 30 days notice like Exetel etc?

    • no

      • I just left Exetel, and did not give them any notice.

        • How? I had to give them notice

          • @Huzi: you don't have to pay, you just say service was crap and they wave it always use a virtual prepay card.

            • @SpeedAU: ha…be careful not always. EXETEL——-> They kept chasing and hounding me for several months trying to intimidate me to pay. This was after I called up the day before asking to cancel due to shit service. Rep agreed I didn't have to pay. Next day new rep came on board and said the opposite despite me not using the service from start of the month. Had to file a dispute to reverse funds on credit card twice. Then when I reached out to them on the same email they asked me to pay, they told me I had to contact another part of their department. So I told them to go get stuffed.

              • @Splashtash: as soon as you say the word ombudsman they get charged for than the break fee so they let you go.

    • They prefer it but not essential.

I'm with Leaptel on FTTP, and couldn't recommend them more highly. The service has been rock solid, getting more than the 250/25 of my plan, they were really fast with the switch over, and the whole time has been painless, so much so I transferred my mother's internet onto it too.

  • +1

Changed from Aussie broadband to leaptel as my pings perth-singapore got unstable so wasn't worth the extra $$$. The switch to leaptel was seamless and pings are rock solid. Last month did the upgrade from fttn to fttp with the 12 month discounted 100/20 plan and everything went very smoothly. The auto closed my fttn plan when the fttp was connected and very happy with everything. Not one drop out yet in the few months I have been with them.

  • The FAQ says they install a PSU along side the NTD inside the premises (even has a very tiny picture). Is this correct or dependent on circumstances? edit: seems they no longer do this unless requested and battery will need replacing every 5 years at customer expense.

    • +1

Most new FTTP installs get the NTD by itself.

Leaptel: what you get when you order Launtel from wish.com

    • Could you elaborate on this? I have done extensive testing and actually found Leaptel’s international routing to be superior to Launtel, while offering the same speeds.

  • i was on 1000mbps with Aussie Broadband, moved to Leaptel 500mbps and it's rock solid much much better that ABB. at 7.45pm i max out connection to test and no slow downs so i know they have capacity could not recommend them enough

  • +1

Im already with Leaptel on Opticomm network, note that Leaptel are one of the few providers that support third party routers. Looking at you iPrimus! ISP supplied routers are really bad. Do yourself a favour and upgrade to a good Wifi 6 router and you will have much better coverage, signal and reliability.

    • "One of the few"? Guess it depends on what you mean by support. Admittedly I've never used the very big providers but never had an issue with third party hardware. Banning BYO modems is thankfully the exception rather than the norm.

  • +1

Looks like FTTB is the worst use case scenario. Nobody offers an option to upgrade it to something better :(

    • Hope NBNco offers a cheap upgrade path someday…

  • +2

I typed in my address on the Leaptel site and got this:

Sorry, nbn presently has no published plans to upgrade your technology type to fibre. However your nbn HFC technology is already able to achieve our highest plan speeds.

I'm currently on FTTP, not HFC

If they can't even get that right, don't think I can trust them as my ISP.

(I just tried a couple of other ISPs and they correctly identified my service as FTTP)

    • +1

When I signed up they asked when I wanted it connected, I gave them a date and the next day they activated it anyway - it feels so backyard-y
