Seems the solar panel is also half price ($39)
    Black B07DB6988R
    White B07DB56C79

    • Been waiting for this

    • +1

I have got 5 of these cams around my house. Also have their doorbell. All connected via wifi. I can vouch for Ring. Great quality and picks up signal even around low wifi areas. CAM + solar panel, both at 50% off. Profanity fantastic deal. Thanks OP, ordered.

      • Can you comment on Battery life at all please? reading very mixed reviews… any where from 2 weeks to 6 months?
        Cheers

        • +1

It depends on how often they detect movement and activate. If it's in a quiet location and doesn't see movement often, easily a few months. But in a high traffic area would be less.

        • I have a 1 gen old ring doorbell and I haven't charged the battery in 3 months.

          It's at 43% battery.

      • +1

Are there any subscription service involved?

      • +1

How quickly can you connect to them from your phone? My Google Doorbell takes about 30 seconds which is annoyingly long.

    • Same price directly through Ring, but only free shipping on orders $50+

Can always partner with the gutter mount

Not sure if delivery would be quicker

  • +4

whats the genreal consensus about the brand of good value and good quality?

Ring, Eufy, Google Nest, Philips, etc, etc, etc?

    • +10

      1 ring monthly fee
      2 eufy reset issue
      3 google spy ware

      • +4

Could you please elaborate on 3? First time I've heard of that

        • -1

Google: 3 words: Do no evil.

"Bwww… ha. ha ha hahah haaaaaa!"

It took a while, but their lawyers forced them to got rid of that mantra, because…

          Their core business is evil

          • they collect mass surveillance data
          • are omnipotent and omnipresent on most devices on most people, most of the time
          • they share with other actors doing all sorts of things
          • they employ AI, ML and actively develop automated methods to monetise and commoditise 'their resource' (us)
          • advertising, partners in crime, avenues for abuse

          And you still want specifics?

      • -2

And the second point ? Btw just to let you know, Ring is Amazon not Google product.

      • +5

Don’t forget ring also we’re caught handing over data without a warrant request, I think spyware applies to most of them

      • +1

Do you know if the reset issue is still an issue with the new release 3’s?

      • Dont have experience with the rest but I went with Eufy after a lot of reading etc. Very happy with it so far. the motion detection can be better and it struggles to distinguish between humans and animals but thats about it when it comes to issue. The app works well, i get timely notifications. The integration with google home is useless as it takes too long for the actual video to start if that is something that is important to you.

The main reason for going with Eufy was better rates and then on top no monthly subscription.

    • +5

I moved from the ring to eufy cam. Alerts seem quicker on the eufy and bonus of not needing to pay a subscription. Also battery has lasted way longer than the ring. These cameras act more of a deterrent and the my eufy are mounted pretty high up so if someone wanted to come by with a ladder to reset the device so be it. Very happy with the eufy so far.

    • +6

I have same Ring camera setup at front of the house along with a Ring Doorbell 2. Setup linked event and works fine. I find the event alert is little lag but it does it's job. Paid for the yearly subscription and let it be.

Recently had to use a Wyze cam but returned it (Thanks Amazon!) because it's not working the way it described. I need to have 24/7 recording regardless of availability of wifi, which Wyze cam cannot do. It will record ONLY when there's internet. so it's a no go for me.

Moved to use Reolink records great to sdcard on a schedule without any subscription. Also gives me a impression that the event alert is slightly faster than Ring cam by maybe 0.3s. not a huge margin i would say.

I would say, think clearly before getting into one or the other system as each have their own pros/cons. I would have used Reolink throughout if I known it earlier but regardless i'm not regretting it.

      • Are you sure about the Wyze Cam? I have two of them, both are recording 24/7 on their SD card. This is separate from their cloud event recording.

So even if the internet is down they are still recording on their SD card + I can review the recording later.
What I don't know is if I can access the camera's via Wifi if the internet is down.

    • +2

I've got a ring and eufy so I can only compare them. Ring has a wider angle, is quicker to start recording and alert but not reliable. It disconnects randomly and sometimes you can't just retrieve videos. Eufy detects and starts recording later but much more reliable. Always connects and retrieves videos, plus it doesn't have an annual fee.

    • i forgot another brand, arlo? any comments?

      • +2

The main plus with the ring is ease of use.

You will get tech specs and ring doesn’t do well in most but the ease of setup etc makes up for it.

Dealing with a proper security setup and realistically you need to spend a lot more on storage and surveillance stations and you need to maintain it.

Ring while not perfect there is far less chance of it just being offline when you need it through lack of maintenance.

Shame about the lack of constant recording though. Ring you are paying for convenience and it is fairly decent overall.

  • Do I need a base station with these or can they operate standalone with just an app?

    • Just whack them on your wifi and you’re good to go.

  • +3

Is $50 each device / per year expensive?

    • It's always relative. I mean Reolink has free subscription plan (though limited recording capacity) or the microSD option

    • The Ring Protect Plus plan as a yearly subscription covers multiple devices so $150yr max

      • +3

Christ that's expensive even if a multiple device discount

        • Not when you consider the cost of cloud storage for potentially Terabytes of data. Google, dropbox, ICloud similar pricing.

          • +4

@UserGM: Terabytes of data??? You have a nightclub or what?!

I turn on motion activated recording on HDD/NAS based IP cameras and my max usage for 60 days is 35GB per camera

    • You dont need to worry about cloud storage/ hard disk cost / NAS etc.

    • yup, specially if there are options equally good with no monthly/yearly expenses. I can add a new camera every couple of years with the savings :D

    • +36

      Cool story

    • +2

Yes, because burglars have never robbed a house whilst the occupants were in the house.

    • +14

Thanks for letting us know. I've just had dinner, so I not hungry at the moment.

      • +3

Ahh, the old "not hungry after eating" phenomena, I can relate. Meanwhile, I washed my car last week, and it looks quite clean so don't need to wash it again yet.

        • +1

I can't decide whether to wear a navy blue or dark green shirt to work tomorrow.

  • +1

This vs Wyze cam v3 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08R59YH7W

I recieved the V3 last week only to realise it does not work without wires. The amazon pic made me think it was wireless. Thinking of sending it back.

    Is Ring cam better?

    • +2

      Power Source ‎Corded Electric

Not sure how you thought it was wireless, not to mention the cord sticking out in the primary pic of that listing lol

      • +1

Shit happens and I was in a hurry, The 3rd and the 4th pic got me. Also the first pic looked more like a cord to me to recharge it ;)

  • Is there an option to put in a micro SD card and self record for these? The solar part is so cool. Saves a hassle there.

    • +1

      No SD card option.

    • +1

No microSD option from memory for the Ring cameras.

  • Deal breaker that you have to get a Ring Protection Plan at either $50/ year for each camera for $150/ year for bundled. No local storage. That's uncapped ongoing expense.

    • +6

It's not a deal breaker, but it's worth noting. $150/yr when you have several cameras, getting off site secure video storage along with lifetime warranty of all cameras is not bad.

    • +1

Not a deal breaker. Just depends what you want out of your cameras. Plenty of people would be happy to pay that to avoid the hassles that come with cheaper options.

  • this or a Reolink Argus Pro 3 w Solar…..

    • +4

I have both a ring and reolink with solar.
I find the ring to be slower to respond (it's not hard wired and is further from the WiFi), but the reolink traditionally more flakey to check while away. That seems to have changed in a recent firmware upgrade though.
Overall I would go with reolink though as it has a free storage option (but tries to annoy you into paying for it by making you renew each month) and there's no need to charge it if not hardwired. I find picture quality to be better too.

      • +1

        thanks for your reply!

  • Anything run on a Sim that can also Hotspot?

  • Hey would the solar panels work with Eufy? I need 2 solar panels for a 4 cam setup, already got 2 Anker panels.

They are also discounted but not good enough
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Eufy-360-Degree-High-Efficiency-We…

  • Glad I waited for this. Ordered 2 plus 2 solar panels. Security sorted.
    Thanks OP

    • How'd you order 2? Can only apply the coupon for a single camera

      • Can’t apply for the bundle. I selected one camera and selected quantity as 2. If u choose bundle, coupon code can’t be applied

  • +7

    Done. Thanks.
I recently got burgled. The ring doorbell had a clear image of the perp. Police arrested him same day.

  • +1

Been looking at Ozbargain for a long time so decided to join as member now. We got the Arlo one a few months back but the battery drains so fast. Does the battery drain fast for this one?

  • Thanks OP, bought a white spotlight cam with the solar panel.

  • Thanks OP. I've been using the Ring Doorbell for a couple of years and very happy with it - amazing battery life. Thanks to your post I've added some of the cameras. Heads up to potential buyers - the delivery date for the solar panels is about 1 month off whereas the cameras are next day.

    • My solar panel says Arriving 22 October and the camera (white, battery) on the 28th October.

      • When did you order? I ordered about 10am this morning. Cameras are showing arriving tomorrow by 8pm. Solar panels are showing arriving 15 Nov - 28 Nov.

Edit : White battery camera model and white solar panels.

        • Solar panels were delivered October 21st. Estimated delivery date was showing 15 - 28 Nov until the morning of Oct 21st.

  • Can you use this without paying subscription? I.e only live video and perhaps a tiny amount of cloud storage for free?

    • You can, but it won't auto record events. It will notify you of movement, and you can use the app to get a live view, but that's it.

    • Yes, and you can download the video within a week without subscription. Due to house design, I have 10 Ring cams with 2 inside. They all respond reasonably well and the batteries outlast the Arlo's. The reason for the Amazon sale is a radar-based Ring spotlight cam is coming soon.

      • So it will store notification videos for a while, and you can scroll back, say 2 hours, to when it saw movement and recorded? And you have 1 week of that free?

Sounds similar to the google nest cams my friend got.

        • This isn't the case. Without a subscription it won't auto-record video at all. It will notify you of movement only (not person detection) and it's up to you to open the app and manually record whatever is going on. I'm not sure how long the manually recorded videos stay in the cloud for.

Conversely, with a subscription, you get a notification of either "movement" or "person detection" and the camera will auto-record for your pre-set time period (between 15 and 120 seconds). You can retrieve that video at any time. You can also go into the app and manually record at any time and that video will always be available.

Without a subscription these camera are really only good for "monitoring", eg checking in on your property when you want/need to. If you want detection and auto record features, you have to pay for a subscription.

          • @wombat81: Ok thanks heaps for clarifying. I think when we pull trigger, will probably go with a wired Reolink system and do a proper setup. Also less privacy/data concerns

      • @Roney Can you please confirm that without paying a subscription all the video footage from the cameras is available albeit not immediately but after 7 days?

        • Without a subscription video is available for a period of time, but I'm not sure how long. But as I said above, be aware that, without a subscription, the camera won't auto-record an event. The only way you get video is to open the app (for example, when you get a movement notification, or if you just want to check in) and manually record live video.

        • I think @wombat81 is right. I didn't realise the video recording arrangement has changed since Amazon bought over. Prior to that, I used to be able to get up to 7 days of free auto-recording footage. I took up the annual subscription as I was away for extended period of time.

      • I read some reviews that said that when they detect movement they only record for 30 seconds and then stop even if the person is still there and moving. Is that correct or have you found any way around this? Sound like it wouldn't capture what you need.

        • You can set how long they record for between 15-120 seconds. After that if it detects movement it will record again.

  • Where are people putting this?
I have a ring doorbell for front door and thinking about getting this for putting over my garage. And also the solar panel to suit.

    • +2

I have one under the eave of my house that has a view of the front door and also looks down my driveway. I have another on my rear deck that shows my rear entrances and back yard.

  • How bright does this one get? Is it good for lighting up a driveway?

    • you probably want the floodlight version with lights - not sure what Ring calls it.

This one is camera only, no lights

      • +1

It's called a spotlight though. Has a light on the bottom.

        • my bad, you're correct. Its in the damn name (lol).

          • @mick123: haha happens to us all. The floodlight may be better for me though, the two way lighting it has is good for the spot I want. Shame it's also not discounted though. This is a good price

        • The lights are on the sides - small LED panels that I don't expect put off enough light to illuminate a driveway. On the bottom is the IR sensor.

  • -1

Obligatory warning that Ring doesn't treat your camera as your property and will share your recordings as they see fit without your knowledge or consent:

    https://www.politico.com/news/2022/07/13/amazon-gave-ring-vi…

Personally I would not touch them with a bargepole, absolute disrespect for user privacy and property rights.

    • +1

      Not applicable in Australia

      • +1

Yeah, I'm sure they only behave in shitty ways in the US and have a totally different corporate culture in other locations.

        • +1

It's an agreement with US Police, utilising an app called neighbours which still requires a warrant- which is not available in Australia. It might be worth reading your own link.

We have very different laws here.

          • -3

@ONEMariachi: I did read my own link. They took people's private security camera footage and handed it over to law enforcement without their consent and without a warrant for that specific footage, and without the warrant ever coming to the attention of the 'owner' of the cameras until after the fact. There is absolutely no reason to think that they wouldn't do the same thing elsewhere, or for other purposes. Also, there is no such thing as "US Police", so this is effectively them cutting a bunch of deals with thousands of different organisations to share your data. Finally, the article specifically states that in certain circumstances they DO share your data without a warrant.

Anyway, people can draw their own conclusions. Personally, I would never purchase a Ring product because of this sort of thing. It strongly suggests an attempt to monetise your private video by striking deals with third parties without your knowledge or consent.

    • +1

So I'm guessing you don't own an iphone for the same reason?

      • Correct, I do not own an iphone. Although I will say that Apple at least pushes end-to-end encryption and the like.

        • 👍

          Are you saying Ring doesn't?

      • Why did I get down voted?
