That's a great price for the doorbell, even with it's glaring flaws.

I picked up one of them and a Home Mini for the kids.

    • What are its flaws? Do you have a recommendation for a best in class?

      • +4

3 hour limit without subscription is just about its only flaw, well that and you need a nest mini or something else to be the chime.

        • Is it a Google one subscription? Or a totally different thing?!

          • +2

            @JownehFixIT: nest subscription, is different

            • +4

@luizmarin: That sucks. I think I'll pass even at this price.

            • @ATangk:

Countries or regions where benefit is available: This benefit is currently only available in the United Kingdom.

Not available as a benefit for 2 TB subscribers to Google One in Australia.

              • +1

@dazskii: I scrolled down instead of reading the most important top lines haha

        • +11

3 hour limit without subscription is just about its only flaw

          that is a major flaw..

google could probably made it to work for 12 or 24hrs limit which would be more useful for most people
but they intentionally cripple it to get people to pay for google subscription

Better to just get a reolink or imou etc and view security footage for up to 7 days or more etc..

          • +1

@pinkybrain: I have this door bell and to be honest, I've never come across a situation where I've needed to have access to 3 hours of video footage. I get a notification, if it seems dodgy, I can download the video offline.

            • +3

@solidice: I sleep through the notifications if they occur overnight.

              • +2

@bertusaurus: That's the flaw, you miss stuff that happens overnight. Even at this price it's not worth it because of this limitation. I'm not paying for a subscription service.

        • +22

Not for everyone, but there are some scripts to back up to your local nas or a telegram channel:

          https://github.com/KaitoKid/NestVideoBackup
          https://github.com/TamirMa/google-nest-telegram-sync

      • +11

Can't check recordings after 3 hours if you are not paying for subscription.

        • Yep I returned mine for this very reason.

          • @Bazzaaa: I'm I have old swan NVR which records front yard 24/7, hence not a prob.

      • +14

battery life is also very subpar, and charging it takes 4+ hours. there's a lag of about 15 seconds between pressing the doorbell and the chime coming into my 5 google home mini/hub/speakers throughout the house.

        • how often do you need to charge the doorbell?

how do you charge the device?

          • @pinkybrain: Depends on traffic. It would be bad if say it were on a main road. 6 wks if quiet street.

Unplug and charge via usb c.

Or you can hardwire it if you have an existing doorbell.

          • @pinkybrain: i charge mine about once a month. i just bring a powerbank around to the doorbell and plug in the charge cable, i find it easiest to do it over night and itll be sorted by morning.

my outdoor battery cameras i have attached to some mini solar pannels with charge cables and havent charged them in 2 years. on cloudy rainy days the battery will drain a little but sunny days make up for it.

      • +4

The live video view is almost unusable on them. It can often take nearly a full minute to connect to the stream when you get an alert because it goes up through Google's US servers. Almost pointless if you want to see and respond to someone who just rung your doorbell.

I've got 100mbps upload and can connect to my regular 1080p security cameras remotely in about 5 seconds, so it's not a bandwidth issue.

        • 1080p security cameras

what camera models do you have?

also do you recommended getting any 4K cameras e.g for front door etc?

          • @pinkybrain: I use Hikvision and have been pretty happy. Have Frigate for the NVR with the cameras outputting a 1080p signal for detection and live viewing and a mix of 1080p and 4k for recordings.

My front door security cam is only 1080p and it's fine, but the wider angle ones are all 4k.

            • @noisymime: can you give me the model number of the cameras you own?
also what is the model number of the NVR you use?

              • +1

@pinkybrain: Frigate is simply running on my home server and does the motion detection, object identification and recording. Integrates really nicely with Home Assistant too.

The cameras I think I have about 4 different models as I purchased them at different times. The indoor 4k ones are DS-2CD1183G2-LIU. The outdoor ones are DS-2CD2365G1-I but those are a bit older and there are definitely better ones available now.

                • @noisymime:

Frigate is simply running on my home server and does the motion detection, object identification and recording. Integrates really nicely with Home Assistant too.

So you have a dedicated home server PC that is on 24/7 for just security camera recordings and don't own any NVR device?

how big is your storage on the home server?

is it running windows with home assistant and frigate etc? or how you set it up?

those are a bit older and there are definitely better ones available now.

yeah there are now cameras with dual lens etc..

Are your cameras hardwired by ethernet ie POE or WIFI?

                • @noisymime: I also have a Frigate/HA setup - do you know how well the Nest Battery Doorbell behaves with Frigate? All my current cameras are PoE which doesn't really have issues for the most part.

                  • +1

@Garbotoxin: It works a LOT better via Frigate than it does natively! It is a bit of messing about to setup though and you have to pay a 1 time $5 USD amount to Google in order to get to the API.

      • +3

My in-laws have one and one of the biggest flaws is that the battery does not last as long as you think it should. Probably averaging charging it once a month for up to 4hours, which I thought was poor. Small gripe, but can be annoying.

        • It also gets worst over time. Mine was down to 2 weeks, until I decided to hard wire it.

      • +1

If you care about value and image quality, the only camera you can buy is a Reolink. If you only care about money and notifications, couldn't care less about zooming in and seeing people's faces then Eufy is the best. Google minis have a big delay but get the job done for cheap, Alexa is more expensive but with zero delay, everything is instant.

    • +10

IMO it's not a good deal considering google is killing of nest. I doubt support updates will be on offer once this happens.

      • -1

What makes you think Google is killing off Nest?

        • +8

google is known for killing off many products which they couldn't make successful (rather than looking at how to improve those products to make them a success)

          https://killedbygoogle.com/

        • +4

They are slowly strangling it to death by reducing it's functionality over time, google assistant is becoming less and less useful.

          • @Gravy: I haven't noticed anything different, but I only use it for music, answering questions from the web, and controlling devices. Is there something else that has changed?

            • @Plimsol: This is a new development. Googles parent company (Alphabet) is performing poorly and shareholders aren't happy. Cost cutting is the name of the game in this economy

              • +2

@Froot Loops: They could of been first in Ai.
They could of been first in home systems.

Instead they always f**k it up.
Thats why their share price is up a massive $6 since 2021.
I think investors are more angry at this tbh.

        • I have three nest hubs, and they have not been developed or added to in a long time (more than a year). Also, no new hardware around. The fact that Optus is selling these off says all you need to know.

Have begun a shift to Alexa, and even my wife notices how much faster it is to use and respond to actions.

        • -3

What makes you think Google is killing off Nest?

asked by someone who either hasn't owned nest products for the last 10 years or is asleep at the wheel.

      • still using my $50 xiao mi setup with RTSP fanghacked yi cam and wireless doorbell hub

keep wanting to upgrade but literally does more than 90% of the stuff out there at a fraction of the cost
completely private network VLAN and personal cloud access via tinycamviewer pro. No subscription shit. Will work until the hardware dies
for which i have 10 replacements lol

all its missing are the new 2k cameras with starlight sensors. But ill survive

      • aaaahahahahahahaha

    • does this doorbell trigger a video feed on the google home display?

      • Yes

        • ooh tempting then thanks

do other brands or cheaper models do that? or only native google products

      • Eventually.

  • +2

Ordered one of the 14 buck ones. Have half a dozen little Alexas around the house, curious to see how this will compare. Cheers OP!

    • -1

      how has amazon alexa been?
i guess for me i have google nest so yeah i guess used to google

thinking if getting the nest is any beneficial - its not really fancy AI - the AI just reads off the internet basically lol

      • +3

Better than Apple unintelligent, a 5 year old would give you better answers.

        • isn't that the new Ai they rolling out? lol

          • @prankster: It was main the marketing for the new iPhones. "Built for Apple Intelligence" Its worse than the old Siri, which is the Siri without improvement since like 2012.

            • @ATangk: even siri is pretty crap - dont think i've used siri at all for anything lol

              • @prankster: Siri, what month is it?

                "Sorry I dont understand"

            • +1

@ATangk: its not necessarily worse than siri. its just trained on specific data sets and not everything siri was necessarily
they will inevitably improve it. Apple was woefully behind on ai and fumbled their 10 year lead
so you can always cherry pick examples.

i tested gemini when it started to get pushed onto android users. Couldnt schedule calendar or tasks or do basic shit. so i reverted back

people forget siri gemini GA and "ai" is just rote learning data sets. theres alternate ways to achieve AI or AGI that are being explored but they dont write sexy poems in the tone of GRR martin whilst on a Stephen king coke bender. So it doesnt get the press coverage

      • I actually quite like it. I'll come back and edit this later or write a new comment or something, but it's great for playing music and checking the weather and basic shit like that, being a clock, etc. which is really all I ever wanted to use it for anyway. Can't comment on more advanced shit, like home assistant wise or whatever

  • +10

I have been reading that it looks like Google will be killing off Nest soon. Beware

    • -1

      Evidence?

        • -2

Ah, you must love clickbait headlines!

        • +2

So that "page" shows an interesting variety of mostly positive articles around Nest and the recent discontinuation of a couple of their current products:
"Google Nest reaffirms smart home hardware commitments, teases new devices"
"Google promises more Nest devices are on the way – but two older products have now been discontinued"
"Google discontinues Nest Protect smoke alarm and Nest x Yale door lock"
"Google Nest teases ‘more helpful home devices in the coming months’"

Products are discontinued all the time. That doesn't mean the end of Nest

      • +1

        Evidence?

How's your Nest Secure going? Nest Protect? Nest Yale lock? ….

    • +1

Yes - so if these can be used entirely offline or with some other infrastructure than google that might not mean much, but otherwise they risk becoming e-waste when that happens.
Do we trust google to ensure these work going forward?

      • There is a drop-in PCB replacement for the Nest Mini that connects to Home Assistant via ESPHome.

        • Linky?

    • Surprised it wasn’t sooner

    • +2

It's not the full range. Can't see them killing the home speakers/voice assistant after giving away 1000s few years ago.

So far it's the Nest Protect and Yale products - which probably had no need to be smart enabled and/or there's plenty of Tuya alternative that they don't want to compete against.

    • -1

      Sure they are.
Then they are going to take down google.com.
      🤦‍♀️

  • +13

picked up the Google Nest Cam Battery 2 pack for $124, great price

    • Thanks got one

    • Thanks, got the 2 pack and the doorbell

  • Is there any way to create an account if you are not an Optus customer?

    • +1

If you can't sort it out, hit me up and I'll throw you my deets. I haven't been with Optus in a few years, so it's basically dead anyway.

  • +1

I am trying to input my address but nothing shows up so I have to enter it manually. It asks for street type and my street type is just "street" but it doesn't appear as one of the options at all?

    • +2

      Same, stupid system

    • +2

Street is up near the top of the list as one of the more 'common' types

      • +1

Yes spot on… I was going round in circles on this. I almost selected "Steps", but when finalising I decided to take another look, and finally clicked that "Street" was at the top.

Changing this though it stuffed up the "mobile phone" field as it kept saying I needed to enter numbers only, which I did.

Decided to close all windows and start again, selecting "Street" from the get go. Mobile phone field then played nice.

  • thinking of the nest but you can only buy 1 at a time? can't buy say 3 in one go?

    • +2

Yeah I tried to find a way, I ordered 2. Needed to be done once at a time.

    • +3

add to cart, go to details, go back add to cart again and repeat if you want more

    • +1

I just clicked on the deal link several times and added them to my cart individually. Just checked out and it worked

    • +1

Before click check out button, click browser back button and add , repeat it as much as you want. :) all good to go..

Your order has been accepted and is ready for processing.

  • +3

Funny enough, I've been on the hunt on FB market for a couple 2nd hand, but people still asking for anywhere from $20 to $50 for these 2nd hand. I refused to bite until I found something under $20.

Thanks OP… I now have myself a couple of Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen brand new for $14 each, to add to the household.

  • +2

Apparently the stick up cams can read your fingerprint and unlock your front door!

    • Recognises your fingerprint in 0.3 seconds & unlocks your door in 1 - faster than keys.
Control your Smart Lock & open the door from almost anywhere using the app.
You can open with your fingerprint, your phone via the app, the keypad or the key.
If you forget to lock your door when you leave, built-in Smart Lock sensor locks it for you.

  • Site getting hammered

  • Is the Ring Stick Up Cam same with the one posted recently from Bunnings 4-pack for $199. If yes, this made 4 cameras only $148.

    • Yep

    • I got the Bunnings one online. Can I go to any physical Bunnings store and return them?

    • +1

Concerned that Ring (or Re sellers) seem to be 'Clearing/ Dumping this stock $37 for each stick up camera with battery, normally $149 each when it's $50 just one battery. I bought 4 from bunnings last week and just bought 2 from this deal (thanks OP) . - Are we going to get a sudden shock when it is no longer supported ?
The best thing about it though (if you subscribe and are in no hurry to activate them) , Set up one per month and you get a free month of Ring subscription - - Then Costs about $24 per camera and battery .

  • +1

Thanks OP. Was just talking with my partner this morning about needing an extra Nest Mini.

  • +1

Thanks OP, got a nest mini.

  • Someone tag the guy looking to get it for Christmas gifts last year lol

  • +1

I’d rather not have more devices that are spying on me in my home than strictly necessary- maybe that’s just me.

  • +2

Wish they would have some Nest hub max.
