ING wants customers to jump hoops every month even for a CC… incredible

    “.. No international transaction fees
Want to avoid international transaction fees when you shop online and overseas? Just deposit $1,000+ each month to any of your ING accounts (excl Living Super and Orange One) and make 5+ card purchases that are settled (not pending).””

    • -1

hoops? if you have your pay deposited into your ING account, and buy 5 coffees in a month you're already eligible - that's if you even need international transaction fees. If not, you don't even need to go through these "hoops"

      • -1

You can even do 5 cashouts via Visa Credit option like 5 x 5 cent cashour at woolies via Visa credit.

so not a big problem at all honestly

        • I do the same at Coles self checkout.

        • +3

Cash out is not the same as a purchase.

        • +11

It specifically states that cash withdrawals don't count towards the 5 transactions though, would be nice if it did.

        • You used to be able to do that, but not anymore.

      • +27

No other bank or CC does this though. The hoops are not arduous but they’re still hoops

        • AFAIK only Bankwest and 28Deg offer no international fee transactions without hoops.

All other ones either have annual fees (ANZ, Westpac, Coles) or minimum spend requirements (CBA).

    • +2

They should just mail us cheques without even applying

  • +1

Litterally just applied for Coles No annual fee card like 1 hr before this posted out ;( (and literally approved the same day)

Would have rather done ING to get the bonus.

But whatever the case not much to complain, also not to forget that Coles is a MASTERCARD to claim all those Mastercard exclusive offers

  • +3

FYI: Orange One Low Rate is currently not available to Self-employed and Casually employed applicants.

    • -3

Oh that makes it easy to rule out a lot of regrets. No Casual employment considered no bank applicants need to consider

  • What is the minimum income expected to apply for this?

    • Earn $36,000 or more a year (before tax)

    • +10

My annual income is more than double the minimum income and save ~2k a month and couldn't get a 1k credit card for bills.

They sent me 2x 'invitations to apply', assuming they knew my financial situation as i do most of my banking with them, and both were denied affecting my credit score.

      Would not recommend

      • +6

They want people who would default.

        • +1

If they seriously want that, wouldn't they offer a more enticing credit card with a much higher interest rate? Doesn't make sense to me.

      • If you are sensible with money and don't have any real credit history it's difficult to get approved in many instances. They want to see regular usage of credit limits and most importantly want you stay in a certain range % wise of credit utilised ie if you have a $5000 limit they ideally want someone who keeps that in the $2k - $4k range, never paying it off completely and never maxing it out. I got so annoyed years ago that friends who earned less, never saved & were really bad with money could get 15x CCs and got approved with ease yet I was rejected for both a car loan and a credit card even though I had more savings than what I wanted to lend? If you have a continuing issue you can find companies online that'll teach you how to look appealing to credit companies. It's counterintuitive but they don't want good customers who pay in full, they want customers who pay the minimum or a little more and keep rolling it over and increasing their limits.

        • In my youth, I was even dumber than I am now. I got burned hard by the GFC and apart from using afterpay to screen my credit card from unknown vendors a bit - I haven’t accessed any new credit now in 14 years. I got knocked back by a power company when I moved into my current place for the lack of noise on my credit history after the (profanity) past: considering getting a card with a (profanity) all limit and using it for internet purchases or something just to have the kind of history they want to see if I ever try and buy a substantial asset with finance at some point.

          • @SierraBMel: I've never done a single credit card or afterpay transaction in my life, and I was very promptly approved for a home loan by the first lender I approached.

      • this is crazy to me. it wasn't that long ago i worked literally 1 shift a week and got approved with a $10k credit limit for my first commbank credit card.

      • +2

I had the exact same experience with Amex. Easily above their requirements and saving money each month, literally applied for a 3k limit and was denied. Pay my mortgage on time every week and they say they can't confirm my ability to repay the debt. Argued with them, told them to go f themselves and will never apply with them again. I didn't care one bit about a credit card, don't need it, but they will then mess up my credit score even though I meet their own requirements? "this is the requirement to apply it doesn't mean you will be approved" and "you are happy for us to check your credit if it works in your favour" uh yeah cause meeting your own published requirements and having no history of a default I didn't expect it to be rejected?

Pretty sure they just prey on people who won't be able to pay it all back and can earn interest off the vulnerable.

      • +3

yep the only card i was ever rejected for was this one, 100k+ income and no debt other than mortgage. i wont waste my time again and just continue churning other useful cards

  • +4

I have an ING account and am already going through these hoops for the extra interest rate. This cc offer seems effectively a giveaway for me or am I missing something?

    • One hard credit check on your profile. That's the only real cost.

      • Do you know how much they take from your credit score for each credit check? I never got a clear idea on this

        • My understanding is that banks can see that you have multiple credit checks say in the last 6 months and put that as a negative factor.

It's pretty hard to qualify its impact but looking at the $150 return it's not worth it if you have been churning at least Platinum level of cards.

        • It's also awkward that they slap a minimum 36k income for such a low credit limit card.

  • +3

Not worth the hard inquiry, get the Westpac Altitude Platinum for $550 in Woolworths gift cards. You can even avoid the $49 annual fee by opening a Westpac bank account (which doesn't require a monthly deposit if you're under 30).

Alternatively the ANZ Black is also goof.

    • +1

Even this one is better with all those amex deals.

    • how do you get $550?

      • If you apply and spend $3000 in the first 90 days (from approval date) you get 130k points (plus at least 3000) which can be converted to 5 x $100 and 1 x $50 woolworths gift cards.

  • Is this no annual fee forever?

    • It's no annual fee now, and if they do ever want to start charging annual fees you can just close the account.

  • -3

Let me guess 🙄 they will jack up the interest rate after they've roped you in ?!

    • +28

You need to get out of this website if you are paying interest on your credit cards.

      • +3

I don't have any credit cards, I'm commenting on what could be with ING for any poor flog that sign up without knowing their ethos

  • longest application process ever

  • I am confused , if I am already an ING customer can I just apply for the CC and do the transactions and get the rebate , where does the bonus150 code get entered and how does the family / friend referral angle work into this? The $150 isnt mentioned anywhere

    • +1

Found this: The offer applies in respect of the original recipient of this email and family and friends who use the promo code Bonus150 in their application for a new Orange One Low Rate credit card only.

I'm not entirely sure how it works if you are an existing ING customer to be honest Did you not receive this offer from them directly?

      • Ah you need an email , fair enough

      • +3

What is ING's definition of family and friends? I could argue everyone on OzBargain are family and friends. :)

  • +2

Automatic rejection. Reckon the Nab Equity Builder was a bit of a turn off for ING. Unfortunately there is no way to enter equity builder as an investment loan as far as liabilites go, and so it had to be entered as a 'personal loan'.

  • +4

Long application process and then automatic rejection.
Have no issues with other credit cards.
Maybe they don't want my paltry $1000 card limit lol.
    Not worth the hassle.

  • Is this definitely not targeted?

    • +1

Just open up a Bankwest Zero Platinum MasterCard
    No annual fee
    No overseas transaction fees
    Minimum credit $6000
And when the a problem u can go to a fiscal branch. LOL
    https://www.bankwest.com.au/personal/credit-cards/no-annual-…

    • +2

Um ok. But what's the catch? Are they offering any bonus or cashback at the moment?

    • I applied for the low rate card from them which has a 15 month 0% APR on purchases and BT.
      https://www.bankwest.com.au/personal/credit-cards/low-rate

Was approved in 2 days for 15k limit. Am a high income earner and have 2 other CC's (one of which will be closed).
I have always paid my CC bill on time so and avoid paying any interest. Just did some costly business class air ticket (out of necessity) purchases for the parents and so it will help to transfer it to this card and pay it off without interest.

    • +1

bloody waste of time with Bankwest. Still wanted me to go to AusPost to get the verification done for the low rate card. And this is during Melbourne lockdown.
Anz Black was done all online, approved within 1 day.

  • So good I held off opening an Orange one credit card all these days.

  • +3

Low rate cards are useless to me as I always pay off the balance at the end of the month, so pay 0% interest. I want perks.

In the long run, you should always try to avoid getting into to much credit card debt as even if you need some cash, a personal loan (which is only slightly better than a credit card and should also be avoided) can work out much better as their interest rates are much lower than any credit card (including this one)

    • always use my credit card and have always had automated payments setup.. so never had interest.

  • OP can you mark it as targeted?

    • +1

It's not really targeted like others though
      - If you're an existing ING customer, you have to get the email (hence targeted)
      - However if you're not an existing ING customer, you're still eligible to get this promo

      :/

      • Hm. I wonder why the people above were instantly rejected

        • Not necessarily because they 'weren't targeted' I assume

      • Is the promo publicly listed somewhere?

        • I'm not entirely sure myself but I'm guessing the answer is no. Since I can't find it on their website https://www.ing.com.au/credit-cards/orange-one.html

          • @foxes28: I suspect it is targeted then.

            • +1

@sween64: I thought targeted is limited to those who receive the invite/email directly? In this case, it says "include promo code Bonus150 if you're family or a friend."

  • +6

ING, what a joke these days

  • +1

Tried but casual worker. Would have no issue with credit but I guess its the rules.

Are there any credit cards that allow casual workers to apply?

    • +1

Yep… "You must be employed on a Full Time or Part Time Basis. Currently we are not accepting Self Employed, Casual or Contract applicants"
I'm definitely above the annual income requirement but that's not good enough :(

  • +2

I had this card a few years back just after it launched. Some annoying things about it are that you can't pay directly into it, you have to transfer in from your ING TX account. You also can't pay in more than you owe (so it can't be in credit) and you can't pay until transactions are settled in full, eg not pending. If any of these things have changed I'd be interested to know, but I've got enough cards that losing this one didn't really hurt at all. The one positive: If you no longer need the card in the future, you can easily cancel it yourself on the website, no need to ring them, which is what I did.

    • Things haven’t changed.

All banks have to give you the ability to cancel your card online. It was a new regulation brought in a while ago.

      • What if that bank or credit union doesn't have an app or my account ?

    • -1

Not sure why anyone would want to have a positive balance on their card or pay off stuff that is still pending.

You do realise that both of those are actually benefits to the cardholder, not downsides?

You do not recieve interest on positive balances, and you don't get charged interest on pending balances (unless you didn't pay off balance in full from previous month and you lost the interest free period between statements - but in that case, you can at least pay off up to what is not pending).

With regard to not being able to transfer into the card. That is same for all credit cards at all financial institutions. You either use BPay or transfer from an associated transaction account.

      • I haven't had a credit card in a while, but when I did, being able to have a positive balance was advantageous at times. For example, if I wanted to make a $1200 purchase, but the card only had a $1000 limit, I could just make the balance a positive $200 and then I'd be able to make that purchase (I could also have tried to get the retailer to split the bill, but this was easier). I also liked being able to pay off pending purchases as if they were near the end of the month, I was able to just pay them off and not worry about forgetting about it and then being charged interest and late fees.

  • Does this stack with the referral bonus? What interest rate do you pay when you make a purchase?

  • +1

They'll likely add an annual fee later
Samesies with their initially no-fee super

  • +1

Some people are saying they are having trouble if they are an existing customer. I do not think so.

If you are logged in to the website, on the left:

'Apply for products' -> 'Credit Cards' -> 'Orange One Low Rate'. Click Apply Now.

Scroll down and you can see a cell 'Promotional code (optional)'

  • +1

Has anyone that's already an account holder and not received the email actually had success with this?

  • -1

My partner is a long time ING customer but is self employed, would they have any trouble applying? I don’t want them to get knocked back and for it to affect their credit score.

    • Credit scores don't really count for anything in Australia don't worry about it.

  • -4

ING is paying you $150 just to get a credit card? Must be pretty desperate. Where is the money coming from? Other users? Sounds a little…. pyramidy.

    • You know credit card incentives are hardly new, right?

  • +1

Automatic rejection…..self funded retiree with Govt Super pension, over the qualifying limit, no loans, no mortgages, own house and very healthy Super balance.

    • +1

Well, they can't make any money off you, so why should they bother?

  • Spoke to ING, they said no $150 promotion?

    • So you're saying this post is incorrect?

  • +2

I got declined as not working. Get $5200 a month from super pension and part aged pension, fully own a $1m house. I guess I don't really need $150 but I do love free money from banks.

  • +2

Seemed a bit unclear so I called ING today to confirm that the promotion was on my account and that I'm eligible. They said that (unusually) they haven't got the fulfilment/applied customer list for this promotion yet but they reckon if you put the code in then it will be honoured. Actual confirmation to be in a few days.

    • Received the following back

You are eligible for the cash back providing that you apply for an Orange One Credit card, become approved and meet the criteria of making 5 completed (Not pending) purchases before March 31.

The referral code that is needed in some cases, is for friends and family code that we provide for some products in some incentive cases.

You will not need a code for your application.

  • Not worth the credit hit for $150.

Go for literally any other CC offer at the moment that is $500+

    • Ok - care to share which one?

        • +2

Well I think it'd be far more useful for people who are deciding to get a new CC if you could provide more detail rather than some half baked info.

Also, this is an actual credit cashback whereas you are referring to loyalty points. Some people may prefer one or the other so it's not really apple to apple comparison.

          But thanks anyway!

          • @foxes28:

provide more detail rather than some half baked info.

Why should I do the work for you? I've provided the means to which you can go and research which card interested you. I don't know everyones circumstance, that's literally what that website is for.

It took you longer to type that reply than it did to go and find a card that's suitable.

Also, this is an actual credit cashback whereas you are referring to loyalty points

Incorrect. There are cards there that are cashback or equivalent points (eg Amex 240,000 points which equates to $1200 offset).

There's no such thing as a free lunch. A bit of research will easily get you more than the piddly $150 on offer here.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: WTF dude? Do the work for me? This is a community bargain site. You share useful bargain to the community, not for me personally lol.

I do not apply for this CC but thought there may be others who can benefit from it depending on their circumstances.

My point is, if you think there is a better deal, why don't you post one? It would be a great first post for sure! :)

              • @foxes28: The deals that are available from Pointshacks get posted in the Finance section of deals all the time. They are very good and as long as you don't do anything stupid like not pay the bill or use it for gambling (cash adv fee) then it's free money.

  • Apologies if this was asked/answered before.
    - can we stack up the $100 referral and this $150?
    - do we need to open account, wait for email with the aforementioned $150 code then apply for the CC, or can we just open account and apply for CC at the same time?

    Cheers

    • +1

From what I understand the $100 is referral bonus when you open a new account while the $150 cashback is applicable for CC application. I don't see why they can't be stacked. Once you have opened an account, you don't need to wait for any email/code. Just apply for this CC and enter the code above.

I'm not sure 100% and you may need to ring them to get a more valid answer.

      • Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated

  • I remember years and years ago, ING report these cashback as income in the yearly tax return prefilled section, later I find out with ATO that cash back is not an assessable income. So what's wrong with ING?

  • +2

Got rejected 😂 guess they realised they can’t make money off me…
