This card is great for the phone screen protection deal and amex deals

    • +1

yeah! i got it for that particular purpose (screen protection) and it's always been $0 annual fee since i've been holding it for about 2-3 years now. Amazing product

    • is there a link for this?
      EDIT:
NVM, it's on the middle of the page lol

    • May I know what’s the screen protection deal ? Thanks

      • +1

Comes with phone screen insurance if you buy or pay for the phone using the card. They just charge the excess which is about 10%. I did it once pn a iPhone and no issues was good experience

  • This or Qantas Discovery card?

    • +1

You get cashback on Essential, and interest free period is longer

      • its only initial signup cashback offer, Not ongoing cashback offer like they do with Amex Cashback CC overseas

        • Theres a separate AMEX cashback card with 1% cashback but has a $10 montly fee

          • @silenthillrocks: i though they had like a 5% cashback signup offer, may be that offer finished

            • +1

@USER DC: I think they still have that but it was only for the first 3 months

    • +2

Why not both? and add Velocity as well.

      • +1

Thanks, I'll take that as a personal credit advice

  • How many points for a Amazon or supermarket gift card?

    • +2

Worth it for access to Amex deals alone

      • So would make sense to use it for the amex deals but not as primary card for points earning/gift card redemption?

        • +1

just checked, gift cards are $50 - 10k points.

as for whether it should be your primary card, I guess you will need to sit down, check your spending and do some math and see which card is best for you.

I used to be on the Amex Platinum Edge card until they halved the redemption rate, to the point where I couldn't earn my annual fees back, switched to the Essential and couldn't be happier, sure I get less points per dollar, but I also don't have to pay an annuaul fee so it evens out.

          • +1

@FW190: So earn rate is about 0.625% per $1, which actually isnt bad for a free card

The $99 Coles Mastercard platinum is 1%, but the No Fee Coles version is only 0.25% by comparison.

      • I don't see anything mentioning them in the benefits listed.

What does new card members only mean?

New to just this card, or Amex in general?

    • +2

Amex in general; there's usually an 18 month break before you're eligible for another Amex bonus

      • Is this 18 months after cancelling or applying (beginning membership)?

        • Clearly after cancelling …

  • What's annual income requirement

Click through and you’ll quickly find this:

Have no history of bad debt or payment default

      • Added to description

        • How does it work for casual employeees?

          • @expatOz: Call and ask them

          • @expatOz: If you're in the role for at least 6 months (I'd recommend 12) and have a decent credit history (ie the Amex isn't your first card), you should be fine. Just add up what you made over the past 3 months, extrapolate that over 12 months and use that figure as your annual income.

EDIT: This is what I did while working casually pre-COVID. They might be a bit more strict with casual employees now.

For a basic Amex you don’t normally receive cashback so this is a great deal.

  • It sounds like a great deal but what is the spending limit on this card. All of the bank credit cards have a limit so why not this one? Or is based on your annual income? Thanks in advance.

    • +2

As in the credit limit? The lowest you can ask for is $2000 for this card.

    • +2

All credit limits are based on your personal circumstances.

  • Is this a permanent offer or a limited time thing? It doesn't say when the offer expires?

    • There's no promotion end-date given on the AMEX website. All it says is:

This advertised offer is not applicable or valid in conjunction with any other advertised or promotional offer and may be removed at any time.

  • can I cancel my current one and reapply? would it be prohibited?

    • Won't get the bonus until you reapply after 18 months

  • I'm so sad, I've already got an AmEx Essentials card.

  • +1

Anyone know how long it takes before you can use the card? i.e. if you apply and are approved, do you get the card number to use immediately for online shopping or do you have to wait to receive the card/PIN in the mail?

    • I'm also interested in the answer to this. Some banks support instant provisioning and you can immediately add the card to a digital wallet, while others like to torture prospective customers with snail mail and branch visits.

    • From what I can recall, once you get the card, you'll need to activate it online (through website or app), and you can use it right after

    • +1

I applied today and got this email "You'll receive your new Card within 7 business days, along with a welcome pack explaining all the benefits that come with your membership."
So I guess we can't use it immediately.

  • nice bonus for a fee free amex card :-) alas i am already with amex.. :-P

  • Am I eligible if I have another Amex card (thats not the essential)

    • Usually, no.

  • +1

Will it be applicable for additional card members?

    • Their website says no additional points from spending via additional cardholders

  • Any clue how long they take to approve people? Their website says 10 mins, but after applying, even though it showed option of going to max Credit limit, I chose way way lower ofcourse, But the website end up saying 5-10 days for getting outcome?

  • +1

Anyone got tips for those who are denied?
(While meeting all of their requirements)

    • +1

Who knows, happened to me too easily meeting the requirements. "Wait for a letter explaining the reason" was what they told me

  • +1

Bonus came in today after hitting the minimum spend a few days ago, nice!

  • +3

Apply through referral link, few of them have $300 cash back instead of standard $200. Unfortunately, they declined my credit card applicaiton.

    • thanks for the tip.

    • I only see referral links for David Jones card ($99 annual fee) and the Business Explorer card ($399 annual fee)?
Is there referral links for this Essential card?
