  • OP, all the echo dot colours are actually discounted to $19

    • Updated the title!

      • it'll be taken down in 5mins anyway - Dupe

    • +3

I have changed the deal to Ring products

      • +2

        Well played 😂

  • 🐢

  • +7

So we need to pay for subscriptions to use the ring? Whoever at the company who come up with the subscription idea was a fool.

    • +1

Yes without subscription you can only can view live

    • +10

Yes, there are much better no subscription alternatives out there now don't buy rings ever.

      • +2

Exactly , don’t buy ring , I got ring unfortunately

      • +4

Eufy’s security systems all with free storage (no subscription required) is simply the best

    • +4

They're not a fool if suckers are paying for it

    • +5

Anything that is web connected or cloud based these days is designed so you don't own it, you're renting it. It is a deliberate strategy, vendor lock-in version 2.0.

They decided what you can and cannot do with your device. They set the fees as you cannot go anywhere else. You want feature X, oh that's an extra $10/month.
Not to mention the privacy aspects that others have mentioned. Or they go out of business like iSmart Alarms in the USA https://www.reddit.com/r/homesecurity/comments/l6mwqm/ismart…

Have a look at IP based intercoms that can be connected to a IPV recorder with web connection (using properly setup security / VPN, etc). At least you should only pay once.

      • +1

Razor and blade model, printer and ink model, etc.

        • +1

This much worse. At least you can get no-name substitutes for razors or ink.

Whilst with "smart" devices, you not only loose control of your device (you're renting it), but you loose you privacy for little gain to you and society.

      • +1

Surely all the equipment you listed is substantially more expensive than a Ring. Even a Ring with 5 years of fees.

        • Indeed, it depends on cost/benefit.

How much are you willing to spend on a cheaper device that may cost you more in price and privacy over time?

    • +1

      I think you mean genius

    • For the record; You do not need to pay to use the basic features (motion detection, live view with 2 way audio). If you pay $4/mth or $40/yr you get 60day storage and a few other bits and bobs.

  • +19

Just to let people know, Ring is distributing data from these to law enforcement to make a surveillance network. You also need to pay for any footage storage.
I'm not saying don't buy it, but just be aware when you are purchasing it.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/08/28/doorbel…

    • That's in USA.

    • Of all the big data companies Amazon is the one that I would least trust with my data.

      • I trust facebook less

    • -1

Well, it is owned by the biggest surveillance country in the world, Israel.

      Would you expect anything else?

    • Officers don’t receive ongoing or live-video access, and homeowners can decline the requests, which Ring sends via email thanking them for “making your neighborhood a safer place.”

Doesn’t seem too bad to me?

  • -5

And works with alexa only? What a fail

    • Doesn’t just work with Alexa. Can also download an app to view it on your phone

    • +1

      Why upvote then?

  • Do I need to be a prime user before prime day starts or can I activate it on prime day before I make a purchase?

    • Not being rude but what difference would it make? From activating it now and on prime day?

      • +3

Saves me using free trial if there aren't deals I need.

        • +4

Name doesn't check out, in fact is a Smart Dog

  • Anyone know what that secondary device is for the doorbell? The one setup inside to show the camera and allow input/output of audio?

    • What do you mean by secondary device? You can buy a Chime/Chime Pro for, well, a chime (I find this useless since any Echo device can do this unless you want/need a wifi extender)
Any Echo/Fire device (or phone) will support 2 way audio and video (with screen).

    • This specific model is for installation via a “peep hole”. The battery and most likely wifi module is housed within the secondary device you speak of.

Other Ring models are stand alone and simply sit outside of the door somewhere wherever you choose.

  • +2

Just a FYI I bought and cancelled this one because it's for peephole only

  • The old pay for a company to spy on you lol

  • +15

I have a Ring doorbell and am very disappointed with it. Some of the issues I knew before purchasing (like paying subscription for it to be remotely useful, having to regularly change the batteries and it being Alexa only).

Then there are things I didn't know about before purchasing (like it taking what I consider a long time from someone pressing the doorbell to me being able to see who it is, some difficulty for the person I'm talking to hearing me clearly).

I do wish I'd spent a little more and got something better.

I'm not downvoting because it's a good price but I felt it worthwhile to mention my experiences with it.

    • Thanks.
Can you share more about that "something better"?

    • My Video Doorbell 3 always detects motion before someone pressing it and my Echo/phone/smartwatch announce it like 1-2s later.
Which Ring doorbell are you using and what would you consider better?

    • I could never accept a doorbell cam that you have to change the battery so often. When you need it most, its flat.

    • +1

To balance @Kendtrite13’s review: I have a Ring Gen 2 and love it, have had no issues. Note, there’s various different generations and levels of Ring models, perhaps Kendrite13 has an older or cheaper model.

      • Mine is installed about 2m and 1 brick wall away from my wifi router - perhaps this is important.

      • the motion detection notification is extremely quick, and allows me to open up my app and the live view mode even before the visitor / courier has pressed the doorbell button

      • video quality is great, as is night mode

      • both sides of the two way audio is fine for me. Admittedly I have to talk clearly when communicating with couriers, but there’s been no issues

      • battery life is great for an “always on” wifi device. As long as you don’t have too many things triggering the motion detection, you can get a few months no worries. You get battery status info from the app, so should be no surprises (admittedly I think Ring could improve critically low battery notifications).

      • Subscription of AUD $4/mth or $40/yr is required for 60 day storage. I was happy to get it to try it for first year. Not sure if I’ll resubscribe. It functions fine without.

As stated by others: be aware the model linked by OP is the “peep hole” model, which has to be installed on the door itself, through a peephole.

      • +1

I might have a gen 1 (not sure) but upvote because that's what these forums are for.

  • Does Ring Door View Cam work on phones, if so do we need the Echo Show

    • Yes works on phone

      • so we don't need to buy the Echo show?

        • +1

No, if you have the ring app, it'll send a notification with a photo of who's at the door and when you tap it, show live view

  • +2

A good feature of the Door View cam (I actually cut a peephole in my front door to fit it) is that it has a knock sensor - if someone knocks on the door instead of pushing the button, it'll ring too!

  • I have the Kogan Doorbell 2 Pro and it does not require a subscription.
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-doorbel…
It is a good alternative to the Ring.
Battery lasted me about 3 months from when I bought it and it supports micro SD card.
Plus I can view the video on my android phone and Google nest hub or cast to an Android smart TV.

    • +3

NGL it looks ugly compared to the ring.

    • Does it notify you when you are not home, if so how long do you think the delay is? Can you catch a courier before he leaves? I keep hearing that there is too much of a delay with these doorbells.

      • I have a Ring doorbell. It’ll alert you as soon as it detects motion, often 10seconds before the doorbell is rung. I haven’t missed a courier since purchasing it.

    • +1

This is a rebranded cheapo Chinese doorbell

  • -4

The buttons on these things crack and disintegrate after about 2 years if they're in northern sun in AU. The buttons are also IR transparent, and not sold as a spare part. So, if you do get any of these ring doorbells, make sure you get extended warranty..
Downvoting due to the fact that the replacement buttons aren't available as a spare part, and are prone to failure…

  • +1

go for a Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell when its released locally

  • Are these subscription based, ongoing cost?

    • It's been discussed in the comments - there is an ongoing cost if you want to subscribe - subscription gives you recording, otherwise it's live view only

      • +1

        alerts as well
