Nith. Thanks for sharing. Look at all those devices. Some so similar. Is there an echo in here 😬

    • Some so similar.

Isn't that just because there is a mix of 3rd and 4th Gen of the same products?

      • +4

Yeah was just a joke mate. Amazing post.

  • +4

Thanks OP. That's really cheap for the Fire TV Stick 4K, I've been using it instead of my Chromecast Ultra.

    • I use my Ultra not my Fire Stick :/

      Wanna swap? haha

  • Kindle Oasis price seems very good - anyone has this device please share your experience? Is it a better buy than the Kobo Libra H2O?

    • +1

I just bought it at this price, when I looked about 3-4 weeks ago they seemed to come down to preference but I believe the Kobo had a couple software issue (someone feel free to correct me if wrong)

    • +4

Don’t know the Kobo, but the kindle oasis is the best reading experience I’ve ever had.
As an owner of 3 kindle products from 2011-2021.
      Hands down recommended.

    • +1

Libra has a few issues when handling large books. At this price Oasis is def better imo.

    • +2

I’ve had one for 6 months and I really enjoy it, couldn’t go without the warm light. Although if you’ll be using the backlight a lot, don’t expect anything close to the battery life you read about it.

    • I wonder the same thing, Kindle Paperwhite is half the price…is the extra 150 bucks worth the extra cost, is Oasis that much better?

    • Personally, I think it comes down to what content you anticipate using it for and how your going to obtain it.

For my household it made the decision to go with kobo easy at you can easily borrow ebooks from your council (and other) libraries using overture.

On the other hand, if you have a collection of 50000 free ebooks from Amazon your just itching to read then Kindle is much easier.

      • supposedly the libby app supports send to kindle

    • +3

I have both, and I'd say they're somewhat different devices, almost like the old Android vs Apple debate. The Libra has nice features like reading stats and being able to read ebooks from the library, while the Oasis just feels more seamless and refined - it's fast, well built, and the reading experience is superb (admittedly, you're locked into the Amazon ecosystem, but I've been fine with that. All those free ebook deals you see on Ozbargain get delivered straight to your Kindle with one click).
In fact I'm buying this new Oasis and selling my current one because it's one gen behind (there's almost no difference between the two apart from the new warm light feature, but what the heck).

  • +4

Good price for the Echo Dot (3G). I got one from the $10 deal. Still inbox

  • +1

    Nice Firestick 4K price

  • +8

I will buy it when cashback rate is 10% or higher from tomorrow :)

    • So I guess I'm waiting for 20% already having that :)

    • Is it confirmed that cash can rate will be 10% or higher tomorrow?

      • +1

Don’t forget to check if your AMEX card is eligible for the Amazon spend $100 get $20 back offer. I got it on my Platinum Reserve CC.

      • Cashrewards is 10% Shopback still to make their move.

  • +1

Basic Kindle is $89. Paperwhite is $149.

  • i need a bigger house, i have echos in all the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, garage, etc…
I guess our bathrooms could use an echo. dang it, in for 3 more.

    • +10

      but why?

      • +3

        Ask Alexa why

    • +1

what do you use them for

    • +2

I have in bathroom. Ask Alexa traffic to work, weather and play tunes/radio/news while on shower.
Also handy when kids need a towel or something they forgot, they just announce from bathroom.
If I ran out of something I add to shopping list from Alexa. Eg shampoo etc

      • +1

On shower? Is that some kind of cheap bidet? Maybe you're a gymnast…or a gymnast using the shower as a bidet in its normal position?

        • Gravity plating on the ceiling. New technology.

        • maybe so he/she/they can watch utube or answer the ring door bell while in shower or on the sh*tter

          • -4

@squidz: i can't believe you didn't include all the genders, let me save you from all of them attacking you. i got your back mate, no worries.

            • +1

@Hugh G Rection: Some languages just have one word for all that. Take Indonesian for example. It's simply "dia".

    • +3

All your base is belong to Alexa

    • Don't forget the deck.

  • Those are very good price

  • +19

Don't do it. You're enabling Skynet.

    • +1

      OzBargain is SkyNet

      • +5

I'm waiting for the 50% of Skynet with 10% cashback.

      • What model terminator is Scotty?

      • Sidewalk?

      • Aren't we all SkyNet if we've been vaccinated?
That's why I'm going to wear an aluminium-lined beanie when I get my jab tomorrow.

    • EchoNet powered by Alexa-1000

    • +5

I'm convinced any true AI would euthanize itself after a couple of days of exposure to the internet.

      • +2

Look what happened to Microsoft's AI program "TAY", corrupted by users in a day! Not sure if that was because it was connected to the internet or if it was trying to emulate a Millennial.

  • just tried to cast Kayo (sporting app) and it won’t recognise it.

    • +1

      Because it’s not Chromecast…

    • With the Firestick user numbers adding up in Australia. Surely they will add the app.

    • Read before there is an apk to get the app on there

    • Got one of these yesterday.
Installed binge and kayo via a Kodi plugin.
Works even better than the apps.

  • Am I correct in saying Google (Chromecast/Ultra) is powered directly via TV’s HDMI but Amazon (FS/Lite) must be plugged into power socket?

    • +5

      Chromecast needs power too.

    • Google Chromecast with google TV has a power plug.

    • +2

My Fire stick is powered by TVs USB port

      • +1

        Really? Fire Stick 4K? Lite?

        • Lite

      • +4

I use the older 4K firestick no problem from any TVs USB I’ve tried to date. Plays 4K HDR hevc 10 but content no problems.

Downside to using TVs USB is it effectively gets turned off every time you turn the TV off so isn’t immediately ready for action when you turn the TV on. Some TVs pass through the USB power so this isn’t an issue mind you. Also can make setting up more difficult as for some TVs you need to turn it on/off a few times to configure the remote.

But yeah sorry for the long wall of text, long story short it works totally fine on any tv I have tried.

    • +1

Some older tv usbs need more power so use the power plug supplied.

    • Although Chromecast has a wall plug it is USB-based and can alternatively draw power from a TV's USB port.

    • Chromecast needs power- mine is powered by USB in tv.
But hardly use it any longer, as NVIDIA Shield 4k has Chromecast built in as well. Can also play games on NVIDIA.

  • -1

I’m wondering if it support mirror from my iPad.

  • Ugh. Seriously, are they ever going to release the 10" show in glacier white for the Aus market or what ?!?!

    • +1

Wow, you are literally asking for white privilege…

      /s

      • Haha, good point.

  • Awesome, thanks OP.

  • is there any difference between this new 4k firestick and the last gen 4k firestick besides the remote?

    • -1

      The specs.

    • +1

      No

    • +2

Only the remote. The stick is only new as in it's a new offering by amazon.au and comes with an AU power plug.

  • +2

So I've got a google nest and use Spotify on it. Thinking about ditching Spotify. I have an Amazon subscription so was going to try Amazon music however I don't think I can do voice commands on the nest to play amazon music. Is the echo dot the way to go? Not bad for $19.

    • If you're expecting the same experience as Spotify, then you'll be disappointed. Amazon Music is good, but different. Their catalogue is not as big or as contemporary as Spotifys, but plenty there to keep you humming.

On the plus side, if you are just using one device, then you can get Amazon Music Unlimited (Single Device) for only $5 pm.
It'll only be able to be used on that device, but you get access to the entire catalogue.
I believe you can switch the plan to another device, but don't know what the constraints are with that.

  • +1

Hope they do a deal on MX Keys and that BNPL companies do some incentives as well. Prepared for dissapointment, but hope to be proved wrong.

      • Huh?

        • -7

I hope Amazon gives out free money. I know they won’t do it, but one can only hope right?

  • +1

Anyone used an echo 5 or 8 in the kitchen? Would love to have something that can show recipes and play music that takes up less space than an iPad with speakers.

    • +3

I have the 5 in kitchen
Dot use it for recipes as we cook hellofresh but useful to see your shopping list, answer ring front door with video.
Alexa video calls (if camera enabled)
Listen to music and read lyrics on screen.
Have a nice wallpaper with the time on it. Set timers by voice. Set reminders etc

    • +1

I have the 8 in the kitchen, and usually works well, but be aware of a couple of constraints.

Recipes: Possibly the biggest complaint is how the associated recipe skills do not show the recipes in a screen friendly format, or sometimes not at all. A chefs aide, it is not.

Video: For curated information, it works but YT videos is a bit painful to tap into working.

Microwaves: The Echos work off WiFi, which is typically 2.4Ghz. Microwaves have an emission in the 2.4Gband too, so if you're Echo is too close to a microwave, it may lose the WiFi signal. Not a biggie, but may become annoying.

The advantage to having it in the kitchen is for timers, adding food to the shopping / to do list, my daily schedule, news whilst making a meal, and music. For all of those things, I could probably just use a Dot, though seeing the shopping list on screen is handy.

    • Have Echo 5 in kitchen. Used for streaming music, radio and news. It's got Netflix and Amazon apps built-in but just use it for playing tv news stations using https://github.com/NovaGL/alexa-video - have about 30 listed. 5" is too small for serious tv watching. Good thing about 5 is you can change the dns to your smartdns supplier. I leave the display on fully bright, so it doubles as a night light. Very impressed with the sound and video for size and price.

I notice the Americans can get a Fire HD 10 for US$80 but no delivery to Aus. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BX7FV5L/ref=fcatpage_shoveler_3… It's in stock if you use a US address. Would like to try one in the kitchen at that price.

  • Can anyone please let me know how playing music on Echo Show 5 works. Do you need to have a paid Amazon Music subscription?
    Thanks.

    • +1

We have the free Amazon music that comes with Prime.
Also can play Apple music, Spotify, I heart radio or tune in radio

      • Thanks. No option to play from YouTube Music I guess.

        • +1

The Echo Shows has an inbuilt YT app, not sure how YT Music works though as I'm not a user.

  • Fire stick or Chromecast with Google TV?

Does Kayo work on Fire stick?

    • +2

Yes, Kayo will work with the Fire Stick, you just have to sideload it using the Downloader app or Apps2Fire over ADB, as it's not in the Amazon Store (since Amazon and Foxtel aka Streamotion are direct competitors)

Personally, I went with the Fire TV since the remote on the Fire TV is more versatile (just look at their remotes to see what I mean) and the Fire TV arguably has a better interface than stock Google TV (automatic previews/trailers on featured items makes navigating/choosing easier I think)

    • +2

Bezos is busy with space missions doesn't have time for your personal data

      • -1

Oh right, is that how it works? You seem smart.

    • +1

Are you living off the grid? No? Then stop posting drivel.

      • Obviously I'm not living off the grid, but there's a huge difference between giving your data through necessity and another thing to buy more devices to further hand over your data. It's not an either or kind of situation. I find Bezos particularly evil personally.

To your point, do you mind if I hand out flyers with all of your data on the street? Oh, you mind, but you don't live of the grid, so why do you care?

        • +1

Handing out flyers with your data on the street is not the same thing. It's not like some random on the street can look at your data. Yes, a lot of people you don't know can see your data and yes, we should protect it as much as we can. Which is why I limit the companies I share info with.

Your analogy is equivalent to someone hacking your Google account and putting your data on the internet for all to see. This is not not the case.

    • +4

Customer since 1999, when Alexa AI goes Skynet hoping she'll give me job holding the whip

    • You already carry a monitoring device everywhere with you. It has a microphone, camera and GPS tracking. Potato / tomato…

      • If someone criticises mobile phones for the same thing, I don't get all defensive. I agree with them and then admit that I still have one because I need it. I don't NEED one of these stupid echo machines, so I don't buy one.

        • You also sarcastically mocked anyone that currently is or will be in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem. Why offend the people that do need these devices?

          • @MeagerDollarBucks: I knew a blind guy at Uni. I've lost touch with him now, but I assume voice-command devices are a huge benefit to him.

On a related note, if you see a blind person having trouble using the escalator or something, ignore your instincts to grab their arm and move them in the right direction. Verbally ask them first. You will get yelled at otherwise.

          • @MeagerDollarBucks: If people NEED them, especially those with disabilities, then it's all good. They're giving up their privacy, but they know what they're doing it for and the trade off is fine. If I'm just mocking lazy people who can't take minor criticism, I'm okay with that.

            • @kiriakoz: It's called technophobia and you're probably not going to like the future…

              • @MeagerDollarBucks: I'm going to judge each technological improvements on it's merit, not in a blanket way - that's just a stupid concept. It might be hard for you to grasp but I actually think about things individually, not group all technology as "good" or "bad" like a simpleton. Personally, I don't think being able to talk to a device to get the weather (and the other lame stuff these devices do) is worth having all my purchases tracked etc.

I do agree that almost EVERYTHING is connected nowadays. A coffee machine I was considering buying the other day had online capability as a requirement so that Nescafe could continually try to sell me coffee pods… sounds awesome mate.
