Background:

Hi all,

First time poster, so apologies if it's not 100% up to standard.

I have been doing a lot of research into a laptop that is both a high quality daily driver that will last, and has some gaming chops in the back pocket. I am coming from a Macbook background but have become a bit disenfranchised with the Apple brand.

Regardless, I stumbled upon this deal which appears to tick most of those boxes and I wanted to gauge whether the Oz Bargain cohort thought the same.

Seems like a huge premium over the AMD 4800H + 1650ti.

This costs more, has a smaller battery, higher TDP, slower memory, slower CPU.

The main benefit seems to be the 1660ti and the better screen.

    • +3

But even the 1660TI isn't really a benefit… The popular Dell G7 deal had a whole RTX 2070 for $300 less

    • I also just remembered that that laptop even had a 10th gen i7 instead of the 9th gen shown here…

Plus, it had much better aesthetics, and compared to the original price was much more of a bargain (Hence, the purpose of OzBargain)

  • Last Gen CPU.

This should be around $1400. At $2299 its severely overpriced imo.

  • Why get this over the Legion 5 with 4800h and 1660ti for ~1.7k?

    • Where do you get that with the 1660ti?

      • yeah

        • No effective warranty though as the cost would be insane to ship it to the USA and then back again.

          • @samfisher5986: correct but if you have no issues then its a pretty good deal. When was the last time you had to return a laptop for warranty?

            • @Homr: Laptop returns are quite common for various issues. (I work in IT) My last laptop was a long time ago, but I had to return it for a faulty hinge on the alienware m11x.

I agree at some point it becomes worth the risk, but I don't think this is at that point yet.

  • Thanks for the input so far everyone.

My rationale was that the quality screen, audio (I believe it has four speakers and soundbar), apparent superior build quality (including thermal solutions) and Thunderbolt 3 + G-sync support made it a safer purchase.

Having said that, and as I noted earlier, my knowledge in this area is limited and I will happily defer to those that have the requisite experience.

    I got the Dell G7 i7 9th gen 17" 144Hz 16GB RTX 2070 around $1700. That was 12 months ago.
Highly recommend the G7 at that price point.

    • Thanks Congo,

I have heard that the G7s, and Dells in general, have thermal issues - I think this year's model might have had more problems though.

However, this might have been fixed in a recent BIOS update.

How has your overall experience been with the laptop as I have been looking into these as well?

      • +1

The fan does become loud for new games.
I mostly play older games from Battlenet so there no issues there.
For office work, 17" 144Hz is great screen and it does look more like an office PC without the rgb design :-)

However I wouldn't want to carry around a 17" laptop everyday.

Thermals are way overstated. Thermals don't matter to consumers unless they're actively causing issues or affecting performance.

Most laptops are going to be power throttled not thermal throttled, and even if it was being thermal throttled a thermal throttled 2070 >>> 1660 ti.

The power throttling in the G7 is way better because it manages to run the graphics card with a larger power enveleope (115W vs 90W)

Plus you get G-sync on the 2070 which you don't get on the 1660 ti (despite the listing saying g-sync, there is no gsync on the 1660 ti Y740) you get RTX and more importantly DLSS. The going to age like crap compared to the 2070.

And for this price there's plenty of RTX 2060 laptops out there anyway, that should be the bare minimum at this price

    • G7 for $1700? Do you have a link? So cheap

      • It was the old G7. The new model with 10th gen Intel CPU has been on sale a couple of times for $2K (I bought one in September and it's been incredible)

too much for this kind of specs
good screen doesn't justify this price

I personally would wait for this again

Buy the new Dell XPS 13, lightweight and the new integrated graphics on it is quite good, then eventually if you want more gaming power, get an eGPU

    • +2

That sounds like a bad idea for multiple reasons.

      • Based on recent reviews by notebookcheck, the integrated graphics isn't all it is creacked up to be and is dependent on TDP and driver support of the actualy game. Your eGPU idea defeats the reason to have a portable gaming laptop, because you will have to carry around an eGPU and have access to another screen, which adds to the overall cost and weight.

  • At this price still can't give us 17" omg….

  • I reckon the legion 5 would be a better. Buy. Becoming old tech for this price.

  • How do I get $1000 discount?
