[QLD] Solar Boost Plan 20c FIT @ Origin Energy

Mod 17/3/22 - See Forum Post to continue discussion.

OP UPDATE 6 - 19/11/2021 - Just got off the phone with Origin Retention's Team. It looks like the number in my post randomly goes to either sales or retention's team. If you call the 1800# just ask the rep if they are in the retention's team before wasting your time for an hour thinking that you are speaking with them and in fact, you're just talking to a normal sales rep, who can't offer anything other than what is on their website. smh… I called the 1800# again straight away and this time it went to their retention's team!

The rep was REALLY helpful. She went on to explain that Origin were losing 100s of customers a day due to their FIT rate drop and expect the feedback of this customer loss will send a wake up call to the 'powers that be' and come out with a better FIT rate. However long that takes is the big question!

Anyway, the best they can offer is 12c FIT which isn't as good for me personally compared to the AGL 12c FIT rates. I'll try again in early December and see what they are offering. Keep sharing in the comments section if you come across a potentially better deal! TIA

OP UPDATE 5 - 14/09/2021 - It looks like this deal is fast becoming unobtainable, unfortunately. I've called a few times over the past week and the best I am getting is 12c FIT. They are all saying the 20c FIT is no longer available and they won't even do 15c now… I'll keep researching and will update here if anything comes up that is worth signing up.

OP UPDATE 4 - 24/08/2021 - I called Origin yesterday to help another person get on this deal. I asked several questions to the rep (who was a part of the retention's team) about the offer and why some people get it and others do not. Her response was that the retention's team is the only one that offer better deals over their customer care team or sales team. The offers that they can do fluctuates from week to week. I asked further about this 'fluctuation' which she replied some weeks they can offer 15c whereas other weeks it can be up to 20c. It varies week to week based on what other companies are offering at the time. Yesterday the most she could do was 18c FIT however, she said call back in a couple of weeks time and it could be 20c again (or it could be 15c, which you wouldn't go ahead with). So that's the latest info I've got about this deal.

OP UPDATE 3 - 10/12/2020 - The deal/offer is still going strong! Don't let the reps tell you you can't get the offer. Merry Christmas everyone!

OP UPDATE 2 - 18/10/2020 - Some reps are now stating that the deal is no longer available however, I can confirm that I still managed to help a friend get this deal as of 16/10/2020. You just need to get the right rep and they will sign you up to the deal. Currently their website is saying 9c FIT which is terrible! Keep trying if at first you don't succeed.

OP UPDATE 11/7/2020 - This deal is still available for those that are in the market. I helped sign someone up to it yesterday no problem at all

Ok this deal requires some explaining so I'll do my best to give you all the details and steps to follow. Please note that this is specific to QLD, possibly even SE QLD and probably only beneficial for larger Solar Systems installed in your residential home or those who can generate high feed back to the grid per day.

Background:
I had a 15kw system installed just going on 12 months ago and shared my experience - details here. At the time it was very good value for money and I am so glad I went the larger system. I am currently predicted to have it fully paid off in under 2yrs based on credit generated through high FIT rates from energy retailers. After 1yr I haven't had a single electricity bill (was approximately $450/qrt) and have generated about $800-$1200 per qrt = $4000

When I first had it installed Origin and AGL wouldn't offer me anything competitive due to my solar system being over 10kw. Energy Australia (EA) at the time were offering 16.1c FIT so went with them. Earlier this year EA dropped their FIT rate to 11.5c and was no longer competitive. AGL then came to the party and offered me their 17c FIT rate so transferred over to them mid FEB.

This current qrt I am forecast to have a credit of just over $900. As I always do, I regularly check to see what's available and my brother who has a similar system to mine was looking to come over to AGL as well. He was with Origin at the time and upon making the move to come over to AGL, Orgin called him and offered him 20c FIT with no cap (as per their current plan of 15c FIT capped at 8kw per day then reverting back to 7c FIT) to stay.

Which brings me to this deal:
I called Origin to get the details as I was concerned they may have added in the fine print the 20c FIT is capped at 8kw but was pleasantly surprised to see it was unlimited with no cap. This deal can't be given over the phone with a typical Origin Energy Sales representative (as I found out) and had to call this number - 1800 557 700 and speak with a member from that team who can offer special rates outside of the standard.

As per the screen shot I have as the link, according to my spreadsheet (which works out exact costs by imputing exact usage and feed back to the grid figures) switching over to this Origin deal will increase my credit by approximately $800 per year. I have several other retailers costs on my spreadsheet that spits out the credit I would make and Origin beats them all.

Recap:
This would only be beneficial if you have a large solar system and can feed back to the grid a good amount (30kw+ per day on avg) and only buying back from your retailer approximately 6-12kw per day.
FIT offer: 20c/kwh
Usuage costs: 24.915
Daily Supply charge: 116.061
Daily Solar meter reading charge: 6.974 (Origin say it's $6/qrt)

Side note - A good price for a similar system to the one I have with 3 phase power (including Smart meter, slightly larger panels 330-350w and Fronius Inverter) with quality materials and workmanship is about the $9k mark now. For anyone with single phase power you can still get an 8.2kw inverter with 10kw worth of panels (have to have a Smart meter installed so it caps your feed back to the grid at 5kw/hr as per Energex regulations) with same quality as above for about $6.7k

Sorry for the long post but if you have any questions or don't understand my method/reasoning for the deal feel free to ask questions. Happy to help where ever I can. I must stress and reiterate that I am NOT affiliated with any Energy/Solar company. I just love doing my homework and research and love sharing it with others who can benefit.

Enjoy!

Well there you go. I called the retention team, was only offered 17% discount and 15c FIT. I hung up, called back and got transferred to billing. Then spoke to a lovely international (not trying to be rude here) guy, who I explained my plight to, he took the time to speak with his manager and was able to renew me on the same 23% discount and 15c FIT that i'm currently on.

So if you get transferred away from retention, don't give up. Just be friendly.

    • Does retention team has the same number as1800 557 700?

      Or something else?

      • That's the number for the Retention Team

      • That's the retention teams direct number.

  • +1

I can confirm as of 26/7/2021 the phone number still works. I am an existing Origin customer on the Origin solar boost plan and called to see what they can offer before it reverts to their standard plan. I was offered the 18c FIT (down from 20c FIT) or the 15c FIT with 23% discount off energy rates. I took up the 18c FIT offer.

    • I am in same situation as you. I have called 5 times today and am being offered 13c FIT or 15c FIT with 23% discount. Last year my renewal was first call and they extended what I’m currently on. Will try again tomorrow. Very frustrating and a waste of my time.

    • You should be able to still get 20c FIT? I did it again with an Origin rep just the other day. I think they are just saying any number now and hoping you take that offer. Don't accept anything less than 20c FIT imo…

      • I’ll try again tomorrow. 5 calls today, get transferred on every occasion and the best I got was 15c FIT with 23% discount. Massive loss for me when I compared in spreadsheet. Need my 20c FIT.

All reps are saying 20c FIT is not available?

        • I will add I'm in Qld. I think they might offer different rates for different states?

        • are you not located in QLD? As stated in the OP, this is for QLD residents only…

          • @CrocDundee: I am in SEQ but don't know if others who are trying to get the deal are.

            • @WWFM: Yeah - my reply was to TrialMaster

              • @CrocDundee: I tried calling 1800 557 700 and they transferred the call to renewals department who were unable to offer this deal for second time and instead only offered: 13c/kWh feed-in tariff

Any tricks I'm missing when speaking to them?

                • @PLA74: Hey mate - that sucks! Unfortunately, it is just a hit and miss sometimes. Just need to get the right rep :/

Keep ringing til you get one that knows what they are doing!

  • +2

I'm in SEQ and I got this deal for the second time. Called the 1800 number, put through to the local call centre and signed straight back up. I just said I want to stay on my current plan and extend for another 12 months.

    • I tried calling 1800 557 700 and they transferred the call to renewals department who were unable to offer this deal for second time and instead only offered: 13c/kWh feed-in tariff

Any tricks I'm missing when speaking to them?

  • +1

I'm in QLD and managed to get the 20c FIT.

  • I was on the 20c FIT in SEQ which ended on 26/5/21, tried calling Origin a few times before and after it expired to try and extend this plan but kept getting offshore consultants and the best they could offer me was 15c which I reluctantly accepted. To my surprise I received from Origin on the 9/7 to check if I was on the best rate possible and she put me on the 20c FIT without me having to ask for it which I thought was amazing customer service.

    • Frustrating that they didn't just do it right from the beginning! Glad you got into it again though, which EVERYONE in SE QLD should be able to get from origin.

  • Trying to get 20c fit renewed. Called twice so far. First offered 15, second offered 13. Love how it's so variable…

    • Struggling to get renewal. One guy I spoke to said to try again closer to renew date. I'm about 1 month out.

  • just calling that number to try get renew/continue on the 23% discount and 15c FIT plan
    successful!
note that number does not go directly to the retentions team.
    1800 557 700

    • What do you mean the 1800 number doesn't go directly to the retention's team? I've called that number at least 20 times now and every time it has gone to the retention's team… who did you get with that number?

  • +1

I got 20c FIT today in the first 5 minutes. Lady was super helpful and didn't haggle.

  • Been trying to renew my 20c FiT for about 3 weeks straight now, no luck with the same plan. Best I was offered was 18c which I ended up taking…

    • I'd be interested to know what Suburb you are in to see if there is a common theme in the same areas? I just doesn't make sense that I was able to do it no problem for so many friends of mine… Yes, I had one person say they had never heard of the plan so I just hung up and tried again 5mins later and got someone different who signed them up for me no problem.

Looks like you're not the only one though with others above still getting shafted??

    • +1

I just tried for another property - rang 3 different times during the day and was offered 13c, 18c and 18c. I signed up the second time I called to lock in the 18c as my new system was just commissioned. I'll keep trying over the next few days/weeks to see if I can bump it up to 20c.

  • +1

I've just posted this to the OP as an update/edit…

I called Origin yesterday to help another person get on this deal.

Yesterday the most she could offer was 18c FIT however, she said call back in a couple of weeks time and it could be 20c again (or it could be 15c, which you wouldn't go ahead with). So that's the latest info I've got about this deal.

    • Hey CrocDunee, super grateful for all the work you have put into this thread!.
My missus and I just got our first place and we're going to try get on this deal however we're not Origin customers, yet. Any idea how I'd get in the phone with the retention team?

      • +1

Hey mate - You can try calling the 1800 number and see if they would be willing to do a deal to bring you on board? Or, you sign up to their standard deal and then when you have connected call straight away to get on a better deal through their retention's team.

I remember sometime last year I helped someone who wasn't with Origin at the time get on the 20c FIT offer but that is because I spoke to the Origin rep on their behalf. I just told the rep I have a friend who wants to go on the same plan as me but weren't origin customers yet and they did it no problem at all.

        • +1

Okay sounds like a plan. We'll try our luck when signing on but otherwise keep pestering the retention team for what they can offer haha.

        • I just tried this mate. But was told im on a new CRM that has different account numbers that the retention team cant see? I was transferred from retention to a team member who was on the new system and told I couldnt get a better plan.

Have you heard of this? Thanks mate.

          • @maxwellish: I haven't heard or come across this before, sorry?

Sorry, remind me what CRM stands for?

  • +1

I received an email a month ago advising that my 23% discount and 15c FIT was being reduced to 14% and 13c FIT when my plan renewed tomorrow. I rang them today on the number given and was immediately put back on the 23% + 15c FIT. I was also offered a 10% saving on gas(which I was previously told the best they could do was 4%) and my home was put on 23% off even though it wasn't due yet. I was also offered 1000/50 internet for $139 p/mth-they use aussie broadband.

For those interested as to why the discount and not the 20cFIT, my business operates 5 1/2 days and the highest loads are in the mornings and evenings so, during summer, the 20c FIT would work out better, but, in Winter(particularly during the dreary one we had this year in Brisbane), the discount works out better. In the past 12 months, my $400 yearly bill has turned into -$409.77/-$176.60/+$2.58/+$49.96. This is a 18.5kw 3 phase system with 2/3 facing north.

  • Got a call today from AGL trying to keep me from moving.

She's like oh we can offer you 7c FiT and $50 back

And I am like I spoke to AGL about matching and they couldn't, I am currently on 17c FiT with you and you want to make it less than what I am on now?

Oh we have had price rises, how about 14c FiT and $100 back

that's not good enough, I will be getting 20c FiT with Origin

oh wow that is very good. Thank you for your time

  • +2

Rang and spoke to Clare today - best they could do today was 18c FIT.

I took that offer, but she mentioned that the 20c may come back in the future and they do so based on other offers in the market etc etc.

She did mention that you can callback in the future to see if there is a better deal, and if there is a better deal they can upgrade you.

18c will do for today, and I'll try my luck in a month or so to get 20c.

    • That confirms that same information I got last week. Thanks for sharing.

  • +2

Jus confirming too. I spoke to Clair today and she could only offer 18c FIT. As I am still 2 months away from due date I will just try again in the next few weeks.

    • Yeah I got 18c about 2 weeks ago when i was trying to renew. But I've got over 4 months left (have already renewed once), so left it for the time being.

  • Rang 1800 number today., signed for 15c FIT with 23% discount other option 23c with no discount

    • Wow, sure it was 23c?

      • yes, 23c but no discount

        • What area are you located? SEQ?

    • this is a game changer

    • Are you 100% sure they were going to offer you 23c FIT and not getting it confused with the 23% discount they offer with the 15c FIT deal?

  • This phone number doesnt seem to work anymore. I called it today and asked if I was speaking to retentions department and the person on the line said no its just our general help desk. Is anyone else having the same issue?

  • Located in Brisbane
    Ph number: 1800 557 700

    • See my comment above

      • Doesnt seem to be retention team number anymore from my experience.

        • the 1800 number is (I called them last week on that same number) but I know sometimes you get transferred to a different team (which has happened to me in the past). If you get the wrong team i'd just hang up and call the 1800 number again.

  • I'm currently on the solar boost plan and need to renew within the month. I've been calling all this week and the best the retention team can offer me is 12c FIT. I mentioned my automatic renewal puts me on 13c and he said that is higher than what he can do. Has anyone in SEQ been able to renew back onto 20c FIT this week?
Has anyone got the direct number for the specific person they spoke to in the retention team?

    • At the moment the best I've been able to do is 18c in SEQ. But that was last week. I'm very skeptical of the 23c FIT offer by Spider Man

      • It's proving very difficult this time round. If someone gets good success getting back onto the deal can they please ask them for their direct number.

      • i tried my luck, she told me the best was 10C FIT lol

Means ill stick to the 20 cents…

        • 10c!? lol - What a joke. Their own website offers 12c FIT… Frustrating dealing with Origin reps who are just difficult to deal with.

  • I think, if are with a different provider, they offer a better deal.
keep calling 1800 number everyday for the better deal

  • Don’t forget $25 discount with origins Broadband supported by Aussie Broadband. New customer only. $59 for 50M plan

  • Just got off the phone - was told that the deal dropped from 20c FIT to 12c last Monday.

    • Also tried calling them yesterday (10/09/21) and was told that they no longer do the 20c FiT and the best they could offer me was 12c… Not sure if it's legit but will try ringing again next week

  • Which company has the best F.I.T's now that this is finished?

  • Hi All, called the 1800 number today, been told that the 20c FIT and 15c FIT with 23% are all been put down from this Monday. so there will be no offer for those FIT price, current offer is only 12c with no discount. a bit disappointed that AGL just send an email saying the FIT will drop from 15c to 12c next month. so where is the better deal? Does anyone know?

  • +1

I have called a couple of times now and yes, the best they are saying is 12c. My plan isn't up for renewal until December so I still have a few months left. I'll do some further research/calling a month out from my plan ending to see what the best available FIT is but until then, there isn't much love from anywhere at the moment.

  • +1

Just got off the phone - was told that the deal dropped from 20c FIT to 12c. But I had an offer of 13c already from origin in my email so sticking with it at the moment as my plan is expiring tonight. Hopefully I will be able to shop around in the mean time to find a better deal or will wait for OZb champion @CrocDundee to show us the path.

Even with the natural gas I had to request to renew my existing 12% discount on both supply and usage. They were offering only 10% on both or 18% on just usage.

  • +1

Should have done this last month… Called today and yes 12c is the best I could get access to. He said they're hoping to have a higher FIT in about 6 months again.

    • and now we wait.. they offered me 13c when my finished on the 10th.

    • +1

I'll have to check back and see if they do indeed offer a higher FiT in future, for now I went with the GEE offer you mentioned below and that I also saw sitting at the top of wattever.com.au and solarquote charts :)

  • +2

This may be the better deal right now.

    Daily supply charge 94.5 c
    Usage 24.1 c
    FiT 13 c

Anything I've missed as to why this wouldn't be better? I'm in a very low usage household so the higher usage charge doesn't bother me

    • +1

Unfortunately this plan is limited to Inverter sizes of no more than 5kw. Any system over 5kw and their FIT drops to 5c/kw. I was hopeful for a second there that this could be the best deal going for FIT once our 20c drops. Thanks for sharing though!

    • signed up for this one in the meantime. just moved to my new house. thanks for this. Never heard of GEE though.

    • Just signed up for this GEE offer, FYI, they have a $50 account credit on sign up at the moment, don't need a promo code or anything, consultant told me it is to offset any 'We can offer you a $25 credit on your next bill' stuff you get from retention teams. For example, I was with Energy Australia on their Total Plan Plus 12 (Home) (15%) discount, they offered to increase the discount to 16% and give a $25 credit on next bill. No flexibility at all on FiT which recently changed from 8.5c to 6.6c. With my usage and Solar output this should save me roughly 30% extra on each bill.

  • Are there any good VPP offers out there that make batteries more attractive in SEQ? I have 20 C fit for another 8 months but looks like batter might be next logical thing if it can stack up?

    • +1

Not that I have come across. I look every few months to see if Batteries are a good option and the cost still doesn't outweigh the savings potential, unfortunately.

  • just spoke to Origin, 10c FIT with no discount on connection or usage

I was on 20c FIT with 23% discount on both connection and usage

    Has someone found something better?

I am not sure what I hate more, insurance or having to do this every year.

    • That sucks! looks like 12c is only being offered to customers who bought their solar system through them. Having said that, you should be able to negotiate 12c with them to stay through the retention's team?

AGL still has 12c FIT in QLD if Origin don't come to the party for you.

      • Thanks, I'm in qld.

Is there any discount of the reference price for usage ?

    • Origin offered me 11c FIT (QLD)

      Daily Supply: $1.12904
      Peak: 22.671c

      Daily T33 Supply: $0.02587
      T33: 16.929c

Not a great deal but it's what I'm on for now hoping they bring something else out soon else I might need to move to AGL for 12c FIT

      • My 20c is up in January. I think i'm just going to go to AGL as is probably better as we export alot. Going to also put in some nice items around the house to use the energy up.

  • Can someone convince me battery is worth it? Why can't Qld be like SA with the rebates

    • +1

Nope it's not worth it for us at least. For us it would save us about 60c a day. So even if I round up to $1 a day, at $365 a year it would take a long time to break even.

    • I agree with Kulprit - still not even close to worth it. It would take you 10+ years to pay it off.

  • Hey guys, I've been on this plan for about 6 months now, and only just realised that I'm being capped at $450.00 CR for the quarter.
    I.e.
    18 May 21 - 30 Jun 21 (44 days)
    Export | Rate | Total
    1125 | 20.00 c/kWh | $225.00 CR

Looking at my solar export for this (and other periods), I'm actually exporting a fair whack more than that, on average.

Did I miss something in the fine print somewhere that said they cap export at 1125kWh?
Am I blind or should I be asking Origin to explian?

    • Wouldn't hurt to ask for an explanation

    • That definitely shouldn't be the case? They don't have any capped plans that I know of. I'd make a phone call to get them to check

    • Will do. I'll report back.

    • +2

      As promised, I'm reporting back.
So it was explained to me that during this period there was supposed to be a price change to Origin customers. Even though I wasn't affected, they still put a split in my bill (which I imagine all customers saw as well?).
Due to this split, they also split the solar export and just assign arbitrary numbers to achieve the total for the quarter. In my case they split the export in half.
It's just a complete coincidence that the numbers are so perfectly rounded.

Interestingly, this has prompted me to log onto my Sungrow inverter and compare my output with what Origin is giving me.
This I'm seeing about 300 - 400 kWh more being exported than Origin is reporting. Just thinking about this now though, I expect that, that energy would be being used by the house at the time… I.e. the Fridge, or solar hot water booster running during the day.

I think I can happily say that my crisis has been averted. Happy days.

  • Seems they reviewed and found out they were actually losing money on a lot of us - gravy train may be over :(

    * 23% discount & 5c FIT (Did not check full rates but this plan is possible as well via the retentions team)

Yeah that is what they seem to be offering. At this stage, AGL is better for me with their rates so I will be changing to them if I can't get a better deal with Origin when my contract is up.

EDIT - Screenshot of updated rates This has my current Origin deal (far right) and the current rates offered if I was to change. AGL comes out slightly better over a year with their 12c FIT rate.

      • Thanks for sharing, are the rates in your sheet using the updated AGL/Origin costs? perhaps I'm getting different rates to you possibly? This is what I've been offered:

        Origin:
        Peak: 22.6710
        T33: 16.9290
        Daily Supply: $1.129040
        Daily T33 Supply: $0.025870
        (Total daily supply cost: $1.15491)
        Solar Feed-In: $0.12
Credit Card Fee: Visa: 0.25% / Master 0.20%)

        ALG:
        Peak: 22.09
        T33: 17.38
        Daily Supply: $1.279
        Solar Feed-In: $0.12
        Credit Card Fee: 0.69%

I also found AllintaEnergy is offering "Priority Plus - Single Rate + CL1 & Solar" only 11c feed-in but seem to have much better daily rates and supply chargtes so might work out better for some that don't feed-in as much?

P.S. My Calculations could be wrong (updating my spreadsheet at the moment) but Origin ends up being around a a $0.97 Credit (for the month) were AGL is a $0.05 Bill (so seems to work out about the same/very close for my consumption anyway).

I'd say his calc doesn't include GST on the rates.

        • @Jonc - Yes, like Kulprit said, the rates don't include GST however, the spreadsheet works that out in its calculations.

          • @CrocDundee: Thanks for that, so am I right in saying the rates I've listed above all are excluding GST right?

If that is correct I must have an error in my spreadsheet as I also add 10% GST on top of the prices above at the end but found for my usage Origin was very slightly ahead of AGL for my consumption/export.. I'll try check my sheet as I kind of edited an old sheet I used many years back and adjusted it to add solar feed-in it never used to have in the past..etc.

If interested this is a quick file I edited to try compare which plan might work best for me:

New Origin 12c feed-in in the first column and AGL is the last (middle two origins is the 23% discount plan I believe along with the older 20c fee-in plan)

@Jonc: @Jonc - I'm not sure about the controlled load rates, sorry. I have a 15kw system so AGL come out slightly better for the amount I feed back to the grid. As you can see, it will be a drop of about $2k in credit per year losing the 20c FIT :(

I'm hoping they get better in the new year!

@CrocDundee: I think I'll be slightly better staying with origin. We import hardly anything ( about 6kw), so the cheaper daily fee is better than the cheaper kw rate .

                • @kulprit: Yeah, if you don't export/use that much than you might be better off staying with Origin.

                  • @CrocDundee: We export heaps (not quite as much as you). But the FiT is the same at 12c. Either pay more in daily charge or kW?
