We used Revolut for recent Japan trip. It was easy to use and you can monitor your transaction instantly from their app. We also took advantage of the referral scheme 😜.

Worth mentioning that Up Bank has the same features, and they also have an interest-paying savings account (which I couldn't see with a quick browse of Revolut). Interest rate is currently 4.1%: https://up.com.au/pricing/

I have used the Up card in Japanese 7-11 ATMs, and all my transactions were fee-free. And no $350/month limit for fee-free overseas withdrawals, which is a limitation of both Revolut and Wise.

There's also a referral bonus for both referrer and referee, see the long-running OzBargain deal for more details: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/839590

The only disadvantage I found, is that it took almost three weeks between applying and receiving my physical card in the mail. If you want to use the physical card, I recommend joining at least one month before you need it. The account also has a "virtual card" which you can use from day 1 for internet purchases.

Also, Up Bank doesn't let you store money in overseas currencies, payments and incoming money are converted to/from AUD at the instant of the transfer. So maybe a downside there, if you're sending money to a country with a volatile exchange rate, you can't "purchase" the overseas currency when the exchange rate is in your favour. But Up having an interest-bearing savings account offsets that downside.

    • We also took advantage of the referral scheme 😜.

      How? Thanks

      • +1

There are 4 of us travelling. I applied first and then referred the other 3. Referral amount can vary between $60 - $100 per person.

        • Thanks heaps.

If I invite a mate, could I get the referral bonus and the mate get this 40 promo?

          • +1

@bravemeow: I think only the referer gets the bonus amount. It does not stop you for splitting the amount to your mates. It has facility to send money to other Revolut users. Hope this helps.

    • Hey you're 100% sure you didn't get charged a local withdrawal fee? I used my Wise card to withdraw from ATM in Japan recently and still incurred a local withdrawal fee. I think it was something like 250 yen or something. No charge from Wise though as I was within my limit.

      • +2

7/11 ATMS charges a fee on visa cards and no fees on Mastercard.

Upbank and revolut uses mastercard so there are no withdrawal fees whereas Wise uses Visa.

        • Upbank and revolut uses mastercard

Revolut only uses Mastercard for digital cards. Physical is Visa.

  • +2

We even used Revolut to withdraw cash from 7eleven atm in Japan without any fee too. Also you could setup and manage seperate Kids account for your children as well. Best part, its all free!

    • Assume you mean with a physical card ($5) right?

  • Does buying a physical card @ $4.99 count as your $1 transaction?

    • If you use your virtual card yes

      • Actually, maybe not. Might go buy some lunch just to be sure :)
"For the avoidance of doubt, a card transaction means you use your Revolut physical
or virtual card to purchase goods and/or services from a third-party merchant. For
example, card transactions to payment service providers, money transfers , or the
purchase of any investments, cryptocurrencies or commodities within the Revolut
app, do not qualify as card transactions."

        • Just buy 30$ of fuel or food, people are going to spend 30$ somewhere anyway

          • +1

@Silentninja7: My intention for this card is to use for the once off disposable cards (where they don't take Paypal) so I'll be transferring money as required so the balance will mostly be around zero.

Will joining Revolut impact my credit score?

    • +1

      No

    • -1

Not sure why this question is getting negged. Any neggers care to explain?

      • +9

        Any neggers

We don’t say that around here

      • +5

I didn't neg you, but Revolut isn't a credit card, and doesn't offer you credit. Hence no impact on your credit score, it's essentially the same as opening a bank account.

Just googled Wise vs Revoult and choice came up with this -

Wise is better than Revolut for exchange / conversion fees

    https://www.choice.com.au/travel/money/travel-money/articles…

    https://www.forbes.com/advisor/au/money-transfer/wise-vs-rev…

Wise's strengths are currency transfer and exchange, while Revolut is preferable for everyday spending and travel

      • Best for spending overseas – Revolut, but compare with other options.
      • Best for sending and exchanging money – Revolut for smaller amounts ($100), Wise for larger ($10,000). But consider Revolut for sending to other users and Wise for a wider choice of currencies.

      https://www.forbes.com/advisor/au/money-transfer/wise-vs-rev…

For fast, low-cost currency exchange the Wise account is straightforward with a transparent fee structure and mid-market exchange rates.

For added services, Revolut could offer customers more value, particularly for regular travellers who want fee-free spending overseas, insurance for baggage when on holiday and discounts on airport lounge access and don’t mind paying for one of Revolut’s premium accounts.

    Revolut all day.

    • +1

For some use cases sure. I use Wise to cheaply send money to a US checking account which can’t do in revolut

      • Just checked AUD to USD rate for $10,000 on both platforms. Revolut’s was $16USD better.

I’ve been able to transfer into my Schwab account using Revolut fine.

    • +2

Both are good, for various use cases

Wise is good in giving you access to 'local' style bank accounts for overseas, something you don't usually get access to unless you are resident in that country. Accepting payments from those countries becomes easier. The exchange rates are competitive but they do also charge a fee to withdraw money to your traditional Australian bank account so watch out if that is your final destination.

Revolut great for travel applications, can be used like an up/ubank/macquarie debit in transactions just with the ATM limit. The virtual card feature is handy to attach to something like uber/grab, online shopping or subscriptions you want full control over (freezing/isolating transactions).

  • +7

You're better off opening a revolut account to get the $40, transfer and continue using a Macquarie everyday account card for the best rates and fees.

    • Macquarie has the same exchange rate as Revolut and Wise (difference of 0.0002 for SGD/USD). I’d rather be using Revolut as the apps a lot better.

      • Macquarie has zero ATM fees + they reimburse any ATM fees in Australia (especially helpful for those pub and servo ATMs), plus they have a solid interest rate. The app is fine for what I need tbh.

  • +3

Do they need KYC with selfie?

    • Yep

      • +1

        Ill pass then

        • +1

You can't be that ugly? 😁😁

        • +2

Yeah. Biometric KYC data is worth a little more than $40.

          • -1

@tenpercent: Exactly. Now looking towards the future, facial biometrics amd recognition will be comparable to having your fingerprints

            • -1

@easternculture: Taking advice from a user who got no idea about debit vs credit cards, good luck mate.

              • @payton: From whom is @easternculture taking advice, and what makes you say they have no idea bout debit vs credit cards?

  • Sign up link isn't unique

  • Does spending using virtual card counts for the 40$ credit??

    Thanks

  • Pretty horrible deal VS the referral - I have a "invite friend", order phys card, spend 3x $10 and get $110. Obviously relies on you having a mate with the card and a few extra hurdles, but in any split situation you'd end up with more than $40… And a happy mate.

    • +2

I’ve never liked the revolution referral system, it would be better if they just gave both people half the money instead of requiring you to split it manually

    • I have a referral of 60, maybe I'm new

      • It varies from 50-140 allegedly

  • ?

  • Interesting if a scam wants passport and much info hopefully not going to dark web

    • Don't use passports for verifying ID at all if you can, PITA if caught in a data breach.
No Driver's Licence or 18+ card?

  • just asking can this deal be stacked with referral of $100 or cannot

  • anyone know why Revolut disposable cards don't work with ubereats promos??

  • Revolut was a pain in the back, to close. First card where I had to pay money to cancel my account.

    • First card where I had to pay money to cancel my account.

      Care to elaborate?
It is just a debit / spend account.

    • That’s your own fault, it’s clearly spelled out if you sign up for the Premium trial a fee will apply if you choose to cancel early.

  • Better to use a referral link where it pays out $100-120 instead.

    • It says the referrer gets the payout, not the referee. As a referee you get $0

      • True, but the referrer can always share it with the referee. I've always shared it with my friends and family.

  • Link was not unique. I did not see $40 in account on signup? It Asked to transfer money, i sent $10. So do I just have to spend some and then the 40 comes ? Setup says to make three transactions?

  • nice, just got the 40
