YouTube Premium INR 129/Month (~AU $2.63) via YouTube India (VPN Required)

11880

Hello all,
Google has finally launched Youtube Premium in India for INR 129(AUD ~2.60) and Family Membership for INR 189 (AUD ~3.80).
Comes with Youtube Music, No Ads in Youtube as well as Google Play Music.

https://india.googleblog.com/2019/03/introducing-youtube-mus…

This cost cheaper that was posted earlier for using Russian subscription option posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414890

I have signed up after cancelling Russian plan with my Macquarie Debit card so no conversion charges.

Everything included in post by @Dealbot applies here too.

Youtube Premium will give you access to -
• Ad-free videos: Watch videos without interruptions
• Save offline: Save videos and songs on your mobile device to watch offline
• Background play: Keep videos or music playing when using other apps or when your screen’s off
• Audio mode: Listen to audio only on the YouTube Music app
• Google Play Music Subscription (when available in your country) is included at no additional cost

Current pricing is $14.99 per month in Australia. This workaround should work for new and existing customers.

Again, the trick to making this work is having access to a VPN service. If you're signed up to one then the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

Instructions -
1. Connect a VPN to the server India (I connected to Bangalore)
2. Click on Paid Memberships(youtube.com), then click on Learn more.
https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships

  1. Enter Indian address and pay by credit card.

Termination takes place under this link(music.youtube.com)
Example of a India Address :

India
Name :
Address line : My Place
Town/City : Mumbai
Postcode : 400070
State : Maharashtra

  • Can't pay with my credit card! 😞

  • is there a similar pricing model for Netflix?

    • Sign up to multiple screens, share the screens and share the cost

    • +1

Netflix is for 800 INR , = $16 for the finest plan.
Not much difference for the pain.

    • Nope, Netflix is expensive.. Argentina is cheapest

  • Does it work on the YouTube app on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV?

    • As long as you are signed into your google account on those devices.

      • Great, so I can download and watch afterward without using data?

Start watching a video on the YouTube or YouTube Gaming mobile app.
Tap Download below the video player (under the DETAILS tab in the YouTube Gaming app)
          Select the video quality.
The Downloaded icon will appear below the video player when the video has completed downloading. For iOS users, the video will download automatically once you stop watching.

  • here we go again… nah thanks OP. Love it!

  • +1

Closed my Aussie Play music account, opened Indian Youtube Premium account, super simple and now 1/4 the price.

  • +2

Just curious, will Google ban your account if they find out? Would hate to lose access to my gmail, photos etc

    • +3

yes and they'll send you to Naru too so you can listen to the local music there

  • +1

Showing INR 169 and 249 for me?

    • +1

Through ios youtube app you pay the apple premium
      - use Web browser

  • THx got 3 months free as well! Whoo!

  • Couldn't do it through iOS using TunnelBear app, it kept looping on the payment details but worked fine using Chrome extension. Thanks OP.

On a side note, the Top Charts in Google Play Music, defaulted to all Indian music even after VPN was turned off.

  • Payment declined!!! I don't have G-pay set up before, and now my google payment account has been suspended. Anyone got same issue with me ? when will this offer expired ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager. any idea i should do, anyone?

    • Do the process as the family manager - the main account

      • thanks. so we need to change the address/country (profile) on the main account back to australia on google pay?

        • Not sure now after reading the comment above, sorry!

  • +1

Signed up as well. $4< per month for family sub amazing.

Used Express VPN Android app for 7 day free trial.
Then signed up using Amex CC.

    Deleted Express vpn app.

    All working great.

Plus Indian subscription also gives you Google play music, which is separate now in oz.

  • TunnelBear works like a charm. Thanks Op, got the family membership. $3.85 a month is a steal.

  • -1

With this price, set your default payment to Google Play balance, and you will almost always get a free month's worth by answering all the surveys…

    • set your default payment to Google Play balance

      How?

      • +4

Ok, just tested it, google play balance does not work on Indian accounts. It used to work when I'm using AU account. Oh well, you can't have everything

    • they stopped sending surveys to me long time ago.

  • -2

Is VPN only required on Signup?
Or do you require it everytime you load YouTube app?

    • Only on signup.

      • Thanks

  • I already have a family group and youtube premium - if I use a new Gmail account for this and then create a new family group will we all lose apps bought through the old family group?

Can't risk losing my main google account.

    • Found a work around this for me.

You can sign in with your throwaway account for youtube and google music and while having your main account for everything else.

I think this is the best option and you don't need to much around with family memberships especially when you already have an existing family group.

      • You can't add members though if they're in an existing group?

We already have a family group and share apps and YouTube Premium (17.99 a month).. if we 'unjoin' the first group do we lose all the family apps?

        • +1

So what I suggest is create a throwaway account and subscribe an individual Indian account.

Then use this account to sign on to your youtube and google music. I assume you can do this to multiple devices.

This way your google play account is separate to your throwaway premium youtube and google music and will still have the shared paid apps in your family

          • @noone: I get you now.. okay will consider whether that's worth the saving! (not very OzBargainesque I know!)

      • I did this for my russian account but now I've signed up with this deal using my main account cos I couldn't find a workaround getting Google Home to play my content specifically from my throwaway account

  • Thank you for this.

  • Thanks for the tips !

  • Serious question..is it secure to put your credit card details in while using TunnelBear?

    • +3

should be secure in a way. Any VPN can see information passed through that is unencrypted such as what site your visiting.
But this signup process is done thought Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) so even if someone is eavesdropping all they will see is gibberish that is undecipherable.

just make sure the page you have visited has a valid certificate to ensure the site you are visiting is the actual youtube site and that a program has not directed you to a fake page. Most browsers would advice you it is fake if this does happen.

  • +1

Meh I just use YouTube Vanced - no ads

    • I personally only got this for the Google Play Music.
Which I don't use but have an excuse to now.

Vanced also doesn't have Originals if one were into that.

      • It's all Indian music on google play music!

Have to manually search because all the genre's don't show up either so it's not just the top charts that are Indian

        • Yeah, it doesn't effect existing users with playlist already. Music home page should change according to your music taste, just play some songs you like and related genre should start appearing.

  • Thanks Guys, do you have any suggestions on using a payment method to minimize foreign currency charges?

    • +6

28 degrees credit card, ING Orange debit card, Citibank debit card (linked to a everyday transaction account), UBANK Debit card (lined to an Ultra transaction account) Those are four so far that do not have international transaction fees.

      • thanks mate for your promptness. though i dont have any of these. :) only CBA/NAB/AMEX which all seem to levy charges.

        • As has been said above, 3% CC fee on $4 is not the end of the world. You can't care about it that much if you've never previously signed up for a 28 degrees/citibank plus/macquarie platinum/bankwest platinum/ING/ANZ travel adventures/ubank ultra card.

      • and Macquarie Debit Card

    • Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard

    • +1

      +1 on Macquarie Card

Absolutely no fees, exchange is pretty much spot on, sometimes cheaper

      • Payment method invalid is all I’m getting with my ing orange everyday card. Anyone know how to get around this. Also got the same message using westpac debit, anz cc, Amex…

  • +10

This deal is good but not not as good as the Tesla deal a while back

    • Lmao

  • Good deal. +1

  • Can someone please confirm:

Do you need an active vpn service indefinitely (or as long as you intend to use YouTube Premium) or do you just need a VPN just to sign up, then can cancel VPN?

    Thanks

    • +5

      Its only first time.

      • Thanks for your quick response!

      • +1

Okay I just want to double-check this. Do you have a source? Because when I go overseas with my Australian YouTube Premium account, it doesn't allow background play, downloads or any of the Premium features in that country…

        • That probably because that country doesn't support YouTube Premium, it should be fine if country your visiting have Youtube Premium.

      • Some posts earlier suggestsed that a VPN was required every time to login as opposed to spotify which is only first time.

  • When I click on TRY IT FOR FREE button, it goes into a never ending loop.
I have PIA vpn set to IND on chrome. :-(

    • Try Hola Extension for signup and then uninstall if that helps

    • turning off vpn before hitting payment page helped.

  • Does anyone use CalmRadio? Its subscription is quite expensive and wondering similar deal or family group or something? Any thoughts?

  • Awesome deal!! Thanks heaps OP!

  • Awesome!!!Just got charged 4.50 for the russian vpn today haha..oh well next month!

    • A lot of VPN providers offer dozens of regions rather than just one, you can also just use a free browser extension VPN to signup and the Indian currency price will stick, then delete the extension

It will still say 129R (A$2.63) in YouTube Premium settings without VPN from Australia so it just needs to be done one time

  • +1

So what can you buy these days in India for $2.63?

A nice dinner in a small shop?

    • +3

that's equivalent to 5 hours of "average" work. so yes a good meal at least.

      • +3

        That is good insight there.

Imagine Google charge Aussie 5 hours of average work here for YouTube premium, which will be $100+aud

        • +4

woah woah woah Hold your horses!! $2.63 is equivalent to 5 hours of work only for the poorest of the poor in india. The middle class white collar indian would probably earn $3 to $5 per hour and the persons working for MNC companies might earn as much as $10 per hour.

      • +1

Not really, a basic labourer with no skill set earns $9 per 7 hours work.(yeah they take long lunch breaks) and Of course it's casual work. This is not enough for their proper survival.

AND MNC employees could easily earn 1.5 lakh per month which means $3000 for 22 days of work.
        3000/(22*7.5)= $18.1 per hour.

        Stark difference.

    • I'm here on internship and I can buy about 9 1L bottles of water for that.

      • +2

Can also get half a tandoori chicken delivered to your house for that much

  • Only slightly confused…
I currently have an Australian family subscription to Google Music. Do I need to cancel that subscription, or will it become part of my new Indian subscription when the next billing period comes?

YouTube works great, btw. Awesome job OP :)

    • It will have your paid month factored in days and will just charge you the new price when it runs out, you can cancel and then signup right away

      • +1

Sorry, but are you saying I just leave it to switch to the new pricing? Why would I have to cancel and resubcribe?

        • +1

I assume when you cancel your active plan it will still be active for X weeks after, then you can sign up and it should only start charging you at the same time it would have otherwise, just in a different currency

  • +2

Anyone found a fix or workaround for the family members joining issue?

    Trouble joining family group
Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager.

Do we need to change all family member accounts to have Indian addresses also? Or just activate the VPN on each account to join?

To clarify: I am the main account holder which has always had an AU address but this setup has also added an IND payment profile.

Update: Looks like connecting to the VPN did the trick when accepting the invite.

  • I have seen the indian-flavoured Play Music problem. Does this occur for family members too or just the main account?

  • +5

    I love India

  • Amazing deal, been wanting the family plan for some time.

  • Signed up to family membership and tried adding my parents to it - one worked fine, the other one getting "Looks like you're in a different country from the family manager." which I can't get around despite changing addresses…if anyone knows why, hook us up!

    • No real way around this I believe, unless you change everyone else's account details.

    • +1

Read 3 posts up. I had the same issue and connecting to the VPN to accept the invite worked.

    • +1

Connecting to VPN and accepting didn't work for me. Spent hours reading forums before I found the solution:

go to family member's Account (https://payments.google.com/ ) and delete their Australian Payment Profile. Add a new one for India.

      • Ah OK, might have worked for me due to none of the family accounts having payment profiles attached to them.

      • Well that sucks, can't delete the payment profile on my account as it says it will cancel my Google Domains.

    • I had same problem. Turned off the VPN and it worked.

    • +2

Same problem. Signed on with the throw away account and then no family could join. Tried all the suggestions here. I was going to give up on the whole family thing but then changed the throw away account profiles back to AU which worked a treat. Everyone is on and I'm the flavour of the month with the kids !! Thanks OP

      • +1

I am unsure if this will work, google might charge you AUD pricing for this. Hope it works! I created a new profile and switched it over

        • +1

Good point. I'll see after the free month.
If it reverts to AUD, I'll just put the kid on two individual accounts.

          • +1

@McCheapo: I had the same trouble so I added an Australian payment profile to my throw away account but left the Indian profile there as well and it allowed the family members to join.

I hope that the premium will continue to be charged via the Indian profile.

I was going to go back and delete the Aus profile now that my family members have joined but I'm not sure what impact this would have for the family members so I will wait and see what is charged after the first month is up.

            • @GhostRiderF14: UPDATE: Just got charged $3.82 on the nominated card. So far so good and I'm still the flavour of the month !!

              • @McCheapo: @McCheapo: Mine got charged $3.82 the other day as well. Not sure it would be worth the full price but pretty handy at $3.82. Glad you're still the flavour of the month.

  • Thanks - worked a treat! Initially, it was saying invalid payment method, but after changing the address, it worked.
