Hello all,
Google has finally launched Youtube Premium in India for INR 129(AUD ~2.60) and Family Membership for INR 189 (AUD ~3.80).
Comes with Youtube Music, No Ads in Youtube as well as Google Play Music.

I have signed up after cancelling Russian plan with my Macquarie Debit card so no conversion charges.

Everything included in post by @Dealbot applies here too.

Youtube Premium will give you access to -
• Ad-free videos: Watch videos without interruptions
• Save offline: Save videos and songs on your mobile device to watch offline
• Background play: Keep videos or music playing when using other apps or when your screen’s off
• Audio mode: Listen to audio only on the YouTube Music app
• Google Play Music Subscription (when available in your country) is included at no additional cost

Current pricing is $14.99 per month in Australia. This workaround should work for new and existing customers.

Again, the trick to making this work is having access to a VPN service. If you're signed up to one then the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

Instructions -
1. Connect a VPN to the server India (I connected to Bangalore)
2. Click on Paid Memberships(youtube.com), then click on Learn more.

    "Trouble joining family group
    Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager."

    I have
    1. Changed the billing address on the account
    2. Used a VPN when signing in and accepting

  • Worked fine for a family membership using ExpressVPN trial on Android and an ING visa debit.

    Tried all the tricks to add family members but kept getting the "incorrect country error". Solution was just to create new gmail accounts (for the youtube app only) for each member. Didn't take long.

    I spent hours trying to add family members but had the different country error message.
    Tried Tunnel Bear VPN to India but didn't work for me.

    In the end what worked was:
    -log on to my Google account with the Family Manager access
    -go to Google payments center
    -go to Addresses
    -add in Australian address to the existing Indian address
    So in the Addresses, I have 2 addresses with the Indian one marked as "This is the legal address" and the Australian one is the extra one.
    -clicked on invitation links in family member's email without any VPN and was able to join as Premium account

    Hope this helps some people.
    Note: still need to use VPN initially to sign up using Indian address

  • Merged from YouTube India payment issues - card not valid error

    Hi All,

    Hoping someone has the answer.

    I signed up for YouTube premium via the India hack (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/444144). There were no issues during sign up. However looks like the first payment was declined last week. I tried using a different cards but keep getting an error - "Correct this card info or try a different card".

    Anyone else having an issue with this?

      Use Indian issues card?

    • Call your card issuer and ask them for the actual response code for the decline it might clarify the problem.

    • Hmmm, the bank wasn't much help. They just said the card looked fine and they don't see any issues. I tried an India-issued card and a Citi Plus as well. Anyway, as a workaround I bought Google play gift cards and used the applied credit as the primary payment method. I just have to make sure that I have sufficient credit.

      @John - I will call the bank again and see if they can supply the response codes.

      • Also, if your bank said they can't even see them attempt the transaction, then that would mean YouTube themselves are blocking it for whatever reason.

    • Someone did suggest trying a different address when trying to sign up. Perhaps change it to somewhere else?

  • I'm still unable to add any family members. I even created a new account with the Indian VPN turned on, and added payment info using an Indian address for that new account, so my my main account (family manager) and the new account both say Indian in the location settings. But it still doesn't add the account! I've followed lots of the guides on here (i.e. add a second Australian account, then you can add a normal account with the VPN off etc, but it's always the same result).

    • have a look at your spam folder. mine was there, surprisingly google thought the invite from google is a spam

      • Sorry, only did a single subscription.
        It does suggest Indian stuff at first. But after searching some international videos and music, the Indian content quickly drops down the list. Hard to tell if it's region locked though, so far I've had no issues.

        Edit: also don't need to stay logged into the VPN. Had no issues thus far.

  • sorry im not really computer savvy. would you please recommend me which free vpn or trial so i can change to India? Tried Windscribe free verson but India requires premium account which costs. Tried PIA as some recommendations and it costs. I just want to use vpn once for this purpose, so don't need long-term use, but something that is safe and perhaps, not necessary to provide credit card please.
    And i don't know how to search with keyword "vpn" within this deal to find the answer myself. If someone can let me know how please.

  • so i successfully registered using VPN, billing address in India. thanks to eecchhoo & spackbace. Then i got 1 month trial free.
    After that, i'm unable to download some apps on my iphone because the store is set to India. So i changed to App store back to Australia and billing address to Australia. Wondering after 1 month of free trial, will i have change the billing address & app store back to India monthly when it comes to the payment duedate? Or i read somewhere in the comments that i can add 1 more address of India beside address in Australian in billing address? I can't find where i can add another billing address on App store.
    FIY, when i have app store & billing address is in Australia, all recommended musics/content is for Australia, not India.

    • you can have multiple billing profiles with Google - it is not related to app store.

    • I'm having the same problems too. I've even deleted my Google payment profile for india and still get play store apps saying I'm not in Australia. Checked app store country and it says Australia.

  • Worked for me I used my existing account, I used Google Chrome on my computer using TunnelBear (free plan) and just deleted my previous payment method on google payments page

    Then went to the YouTube link in the original post and paid using an ANZ Visa Debit Card making sure the Indian Address was listed.

    Super simple, took about 5 minutes including time it took to install and sign up to Tunnelbear for the VPN.

    I was previously paying $15 a month so this saving is awesome!

  • Signed up for the family plan a month ago, just got billed for the first time since the free trial ended, $3.96…. SWEET !!!!

    For those having problems, use the VPN , then go to settings in your google account change the Default country code to India, sign up with Premium, once it goes through go back to your Google settings and change the country code back to Australia.

    You beauty, I just signed up with a student account which is INR 79 ($1.63) per month, it verified me using an existing Aus uni login which I previously had before I graduated. Went through without a hitch over VPN.

    1 month free trial also, what a beaut deal!

  • Was working fine for me in Rubles since December until today, when I was billed $16.19. They must have wised up. I just realised I also wasn't billed at all for March or April.

    I might cancel and try again.

    • I find it interesting (read: shit) that they can change a payment amount by THAT much, without advising.

      Guessing you got a standard monthly email, saying payment will be taken from PayPal soon… and you noticed the amount?

  • I was able to sign up for this yesterday and it worked fine. However, like others, I've been unable to add anyone to my family. With my wife's account I went to http://payments.google.com, settings, and clicked 'edit region'. This exposed a 'create new profile' button, which allowed me to add an Indian profile (with I did with the same address I signed up to youtube premium with). Now my wife's account has both an Indian and Australian billing profile. I then tried joining the family group, but it still says wrong country.

      I had this problem yesterday. All I had to do was to add an Australian payment profile to my FAMILY MANAGER account. (I did not previously have an AU payment profile as I had never used Google pay) (the IN payment profile was automatically added when I joined YouTube premium) all my other family members only have AU payment profiles

      To do this:
      1.go to HTTPS://Pay. google.com
      2.click on settings
      3.click on country/region edit button
      4.click on create new profile to create an Australian payment profile

      After I did this, my family members did not require any VPN to accept the invitation to join my YouTube premium family. Hopefully this helps

  • 3 months later, I finally got sick of rideshare ads in the morning commute and delivery app ads in the evening commute so I used Tunnelbear and signed up to family plan and it worked, waiting for family to accept.

    Used my AMEX and added my family address in Melbs in google payments centre just in case. Hope it works long term.

      • hey. Sorry, full group for me. I used tunnelbear which was free and able to connect to india. I used the chrome extension as well, so i could have just what was in the browser VPNing via India. Found it quite straight forward. Good luck.

  • I just signed up for the free 30 day trial then added the family account and it charged the additional fee will correct conversion. Lucky my card has no fees (because im already paying an arm and leg for it!)

  • Hi, YouTube tried to take money out . Email said “Problem with your payment for YouTube Premium”. However there is no record on ing account. The past two months it was fine.
    Has anyone had a similar issue and fixed this? Tia

  • Recently I successfully did a family membership on my Aus account via VPN, sent invites to my kids (all are here in Aus and have Aus-based accounts) and all added successfully.

    Today I sent an invite to a friend with another Aus-based account and she's getting the "Different Country" error. She doesn't have any payments profile but neither did the kids.

    Firstly I don't know why this is any different to what I did previously and second there are several solutions to error this posted in the thread but I think they involve offshore family members. Anyone been in the same situation as me and resolved it?

    • Depends on how you feel about fine print. Most people don't care. All they will do is cancel your subscription.

    I was with Russia plan earlier and followed the below steps:
    1. Cancelled Russia youtube premuim
    2. Connected to India VPN
    3. Changed the location to IN
    4. Goto https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships

    Here it shows USD plans - Family plan being 17.99 USD. If I go to that link without VPN, it shows AUD 21.99.

    I have double checked my IP Address while connected to VPN being Indian (Chennai).

    Downloaded Tunnelbear VPN on my MAC and signed up using Youtube website.

    Subscribed for a Family plan.

    First month is free. The website accepted by CITI CC. Lets see what the final amount is when I get charged at the end of September. I am hoping there will be a fee or something for $ conversion.

      • Probably easier to google what is in the top and go from there. Generally it's mostly pop trash anyway.

        At least the auto-suggestions of songs seem to be good.

    • No it doesn't. It's split by payment profiles.

    Used free version of Tunnelbear on my laptop - chose India.
    Clicked the link in the deal description and signed up using the '1 Janpath' autofill address method.
    Closed everything and turned off VPN.
    Opened YouTube on laptop and nothing out of place, just premium with no ads now!
    Opened YouTube app on iPhone and also perfect!

      Whatever VPN you are using is not seeing you in Indian. $ always reflect where the ip is seen to be coming from

      • i ended up getting it, i think you're right. i tried one VPN on my laptop which was saying my IP was in India but gave me Dubai price, but i followed instructions to do it on my android phone with a different VPN and it worked. a great little scam, is there any other things you can pull with this method?
