Max Yearly (ARG): Basic $49,590 (~A$74.25), Standard $61,290 (~A$91.94), Platinum $72,890 (~A$109.34) @ Max Argentina (VPN Req.)

672

Knew there’d be a cheaper country out there for HBO Max. Argentina has come good and I managed to easily take out a sub over there with my Australian card.

Step 1: VPN to Argentina ON.
Step 2: Go to the deal link, and take out your account subscription with a new account.
Step 3: You may notice you get charged a bit more than the cost of the subscription, this was refunded to me a few hours after taking out the sub.
Step 4: VPN off, and enjoy!

Receipt for proof.

I used my Macquarie card with fee-free Currency conversion.

Enjoy!

Mod 4pm: Updated with correct prices in title.

      …which costs

      • +1

Was just heads up for Foxtel subscribers.

Thanks Fatboy. I didn't know and set it up for mum and dad last night

  • Pay for an year an get cancelled?

    • It shouldn't get cancelled, but if it does then open a credit card dispute.

      • Isn't there a time limit on opening a credit card dispute?

        • I've never tried a chargeback a long time after the transaction, but I just checked Commbank's website & they said 'normal' was 120 days, but in some circumstances up to 540 days.

  • Do they accept a foreign credit card? I tried Indonesian HBO and was rejected due to card is not issued by an Indonesian bank.

    • +4

I used my Australian debit card. Can’t comment on credit card.

    • I think Indonesian Ultimate is still cheaper

      • Yes, it is cheaper, but you need a credit card issued by Indonesian bank.

now we have screwed the ARG people, expect price increase like Disney+, PS+, etc.

        Don't Cry for Me Argentina

  • The annoying thing about the good 75C855 and sound system deals on here are that I'm forced into Platinum tiers for all streaming services to capitalise on the TV and Sound quality I've paid for :D

    • +1

      I have the 85c855. I feel ya.

Disney+ is the only one that doesnt paywall resolution, but the price keeps going up (as expected). Paywalling resolution is like going to a restaurant and paying extra to have them serve it at the correct temperature, instead of letting it sit in the cold for ten mins as punishment haha

      • +1

Yeah it's getting ridiculous. I'm even contemplating sailing the high seas for the first time in 10 years to see if BluRay quality makes a difference.

        • +1

to see if BluRay quality makes a difference.

          It does.

        • +1

Regular Blu Ray quality makes a massive difference, let alone 4K Blu Ray w/ HDR and Dolby Atmos. Since buying a S90C / Q930D I got very into physical media collecting, and almost exclusively watch movies that way.

          • @deanylev: https://youtu.be/WbKCZpQN72c?si=K4VgMC8fI4UONzgC

How come this guys YouTube video from 7 years ago shows a negligible difference between Blu Ray w/ Dolby Vision vs. Apple TV w/ Dolby Vision? I presume streaming quality has improved significantly in the past 7 years too.

            • +1

@AlbiesDad: This video shows content bought off iTunes, which is a totally different ballgame to streaming services. Apple is also the exception to the rule, even content on Apple TV+ is served at a staggeringly high bitrate compared to over providers (Severance streams at around 40Mbps, compared to around 10Mbps for Netflix's 4K content).

I presume streaming quality has improved significantly in the past 7 years too.

You will find it is quite the opposite, these companies are constantly trying to see how low they can crank bitrates without people complaining. Your thinking is along the right lines, as there are have been great advancements in video codecs over the years, but companies simply use those advancements to save on bandwidth costs, not increase fidelity.

              • @deanylev: Very insightful, thank you. I fear this is yet another rabbit hole I'm finding myself entering.

              • @deanylev: You know what’s strange though is that Apple TV streams so much more smoothly than Netflix, I guess they have better bandwidth and compression?
I get ATV+ through India for about $20 a year everything else I sail the seas and use subler for meta data and artwork and host it in my headless Mac mini iTunes server.

                • @Jenbrook: Doesn't surprise me - Netflix is so mature that they hyper optimise just about everything, whereas ATV+ is still early days, and is a total side business for Apple, meaning they can just throw money at it. Same reason the quality is so good :P

      • No Prime Video works in 4K unlike Disney the app actually works though

      • Charging more for higher resolutions makes a lot of sense from a business perspective, streaming something at 4K, which is 4x the resolution of 1080p, is going to cost them 4x as much bandwidth (assuming the bitrate is scaled linearly with the resolution).

The restaurant analogy doesn't really work since serving food cold wouldn't save them any money, the equivalent here is really that you're being served a bigger portion of the same meal.

And to your point about Disney+, they do exactly the same. The only services that only have 4K plans are Apple TV+ and Prime Video.

  • Super easy and wokred witb ANZ dedit card. Got charged $117 for year top tiers. Thanks heaps

    • Sorry to ask… $117 for Platinum?

      • Yes 117 for Platinum

        • Ahh, I see. Now title is updated.

  • Tunnelbear worked. Happy pants.

  • +1

    Would this effect content?

    • It’s location dependent not billing dependent. So you’d get aussie available catalog with an aussie ip.

      • Fair enough. Thought I’d ask cause my Spotify recommends a bunch of Turkish content and playlists after subbing through turkey

  • -3

nah not good enough for me I want Max Ultra.

How does ARS 72,890 convert to A$94.69
Google says it is about AU $107.xx

    https://www.google.com/search?q=ARS+72890+to+AUD

    • You're not wrong! Well spotted. I was just a silly sheep that didn't check. OP should update original post.

    • +3

OP made an ARS of themselves.

  • Anyone have thoughts on Binge versus HBO Max they can share?

    • +3

Definitely Max. Binge app navigation is a joke. And you’re getting the best shows on binge with max anyways, which are mainly hbo tbh.

      • Agreed, the Binge GUI is horrible, you horizontally scroll through shows and then when you select that show to get more details when you then back out, the list you have scrolled through jumps all the back to the start and you have to scroll all the way back to where you where, so infuriating.

    • +3

The HBO content was the only thing bringing customers to binge (this is now removed). With Binge, all that’s left is now is heaps of reality tv and some uk shows - following on from all the price hikes and introduction of ads not at all worth the bloated monthly cost for a rubbish service.
I would also be reluctant to sign up for annual sub to Max ( unless it was massively reduced compared to monthly 40-50%). Most people who have previously been on binge have seen the best of the HBO back catalogue, so there’s not going to be much to keep up with outside the 10weeks a year that there’s a new show you want to watch (house of dragon, last of us) .
For me I’ll be dropping binge and only maintaining Max 3-4months of the year

  • Got mine free from foxtel. Supposedly getting the basic plan with full hd but happy with the audio and video quality on my oled watching White Lotus. Getting good surrounds on my bedroom sonos setup.

Great catalog of shows and movies vs stan and paramount combined i reckon. Even better if you VPN to US.

    • Edit: Ok i do get the ads in the middle of movies T_T

    • Is it only viewable from the iQ box or can you use the Foxtel Go app or even the Max app with Foxtel credentials?

      • +2

You sign up through the iq box from the apps section then you can use the created login as your max login from other devices :)

Can't get it to work with SurfShark or Tunnelbear with any of my Aussie credit or debit cards

  • Tunnelbear worked With westpac card Thanks

    • Just tried the exact same and got a "Invalid credit card information. Please try again." error

      • +1

Not sure but I used brave browser on iPhone if that helps

        • Just tried the same and also no luck - weird :/

          • @Ignation: Same - tried chrome extension with Urban VPN - nothing

            iPhone with TUnnelbear - nothing.

  • +1

I get Invalid credit card information. Please try again.

    • +1

Same with me. PIA worked to get to the payment page but I couldn't any payments using 4 different credit/debit cards

      • Same - tried 4 credit cards - 28 degrees card - westpac debit and Zip - all no good

Tried off my iPhone and Chrome and other browsers. Tried with Tunnelbear and Urban VPN.

        • Worked for me…. My problem is I can’t find anything new to watch on it. Seen it all.

  • I was charged ~$95 AUD for ARS 61,290 without convention fee, which the post says A$79.62. Is this conversion rate normal?

    • Yeah, i think the OP's conversions were a little off unfortunately

  • +4

Charged $114 for Platinum (conversion incl), using digital Westpac Altitude Qantas Black Card on Chrome and NordVPN.

  • Charged $130 using Amex Qantas Ultimate for the Platinum

  • +1

Anyone used ING Debit card? Would like to know what's the total cost after conversation.

  • +2

    Just compared different countries.

It seems like Max Philippines is the cheapest:

    • Standard P1890/yr or 53.35 AUD (Full HD on 2 Devices)
    • Ultimate P2790/yr or 78.76 AUD (4K/ Dolby on 4 Devices)

    This should've been the deal!

    • +4

Did you successfully pay for it through there though? That'll be the main issue.

      • oh true my bad. none of my cards that are international transaction fee free worked lol.

Getting the error: We are unable to process payment methods issued outside of your home country. Please try another payment method.

Curious to see if anyone wants to try with their cards.

tried bendigo cc, ubank and revolut debit cards.

        • ? Philippine max subscription. Would this work here in Australia without turning on the VPN though? Thanks

          • @adzbpx: yes it does. you get aussie catalog if your ip is Australian.

  • +2

    Works! Thanks for the deal.
Went to cancel after signing up and was offered retention deal at 52k peso (which I accepted). Even better for next year if the sub holds up.

    • What method did you try to get it to work?

      • +2

Pure VPN Argentina, Private IOS window, platinum sub, Westpac CC. Manage account to cancel, accept offer

    • +2

Thanks! Locked in the discount for next year as well.

    • AUKUS FTW!

  • Unable to pay with a Westpac CC or Macquarie debit.

  • +3

Too much subscription services these days. Time for the Pirates to make a comeback.

    • My Stremio is still working and i have an addon that shows netflix, hbo, disney, prime etc. Great thing about it only cost about $5 a month for all the services ;)

      • Interesting never knew about this. May I know which specific add on is that?

        • First thing to check is if the devices your using has access to the "Stremio" App

My samsung tv have it avaliable but they tend to have to be newer models 2020+ to access the app.

You will need to be a little tech savy in setting it up but its not overly hard imo. Happy to talk you through it.

          • @david6509: Thanks mate. Will get in touch when I get around it.

  • Does it work without VPN?

    • Yep, and showing AU content

  • +1

Probably not worth for the basic plan?, because the price for basic in Australia is on sale: $7.99/month or $79.99/year

  • Thanks OP. It worked 💪

  • Please try Thailand

    • I found Ultimate Packgage 2090 THB ~ 61 USD

  • no luck nab debit.
