  • Are strawberries safe to eat now?

    • +54

Strawberries are safe to eat, don't recommend eating the needles though.

      • +7

unless you're vegitarian, then the add iron might be beneficial.

    • +2

absolutely - just slice them in centre to ensure no needles (widely recommended after this craziness started few days back)

    • +1

Is any food safe to eat?

  • +21

Don't be a troll like Homr, support the farmers and cut/check your strawberries, it will take a couple of minutes more but it's worth it.

      • you should eat some needles

      • Well, make sure you don’t feed them fish, (Mercury poisoning), chicken, (antibiotics), vegetables, (insecticides), rice (insecticides), frozen fruit (hep A, listeria), the list goes on. I think both your wife, and in laws, probably have a pretty good grasp on what and why. If you are worried about presenting cut fruit then make a fruit cobbler, which has the added advantage of cooking the fruit as well. When I eat fruit I cut it first, usually to checkout it doesn’t have insects in it or has bad patches. Again, if you find a needle take the fruit back.

Any deal on metal detectors please inorder to grab these strawberries ???

  • +1

I have been assured they are needle free!!!!

    How ?

    • Unaffected brand?

      • +1

        Pre-chewing…

      • +1

        Unaffected brand?

More incidents reported today in VIC.

        No details on the brands.

        • Maybe the store scanned them through a metal detector.

    • Place it next to a giant magnet.

    • "It's not a joke, it's not funny," Mr Morrison said.

"You are putting the livelihoods of hard-working Australians at risk and you are scaring children, and you are a coward and a grub.

Some idiot, for his own reasons, has engaged in an act of sabotage it would seem, and that has put all of that risk for these people out there having a go."

I wish ScotMo would call them a s__t c__t, because they are.

That and have them pay for the lost in revenue and cost for the investigations by either $$$, lengthy jail time or get a ridiculous amount of community service to go help a strawberry farm.

        and apple.. and bananas now!!

I will continue to eat any strawberries/apples and bananas!.. carefully of course!

        Aussie fruit all the way!

        • "he’ll be dealt with under the youth cautioning system"

haha love it… I hope they dont caution them too hard though :/

Currently buying more strawberries than ever

Growers need support during this time of insanity

    • 100% Utah. Same here.

      • Me too. Never a big fan of strawberries but I am buying more strawberries and eat them everyday

  • +17

I understand that the strawberry farmers need support, but I'm honestly buying a lot because they're so darn cheap now. And seriously - there's how many millions of kgs of strawberries being sold? How many needle incidents? Probably have a higher chance of being struck by lightning. Will still cut each one in half, but honestly people are terrible at assessing these kinds of risks.

    • +13

I also wonder how many of these reports are genuine, and how many people are sticking needles into strawberries themselves for 15 seconds of fame on TV. There are some really weird people out there.

      • This

And if they get caught doing this, they need the book thrown at them

        • Only book? Not throwing needles back at their face?

      • They caught the lady in Maryborough putting a needle in a banana on the shop camera! Apparently mental illness. Well duh!

    • yep, or bite them in half.

      • +2

To be perfectly honest that's probably what I'll just end up doing out of laziness after the first few punnets yield no needles…

    • And seriously - there's how many millions of kgs of strawberries being sold? How many needle incidents? Probably have a higher chance of being struck by lightning

Very true, indeed. And if you did find a needle in your strawberry, you might then as well buy the lotto.

  • unsure if u know or not but the madness has spread to bananas and apples:

If i went to test drive a high yield amg mercedes and it had a needle in the drivers seat, would they also give a 90% discount on the ourchase price

  • +29

Cant believe there are ozbargainers complaining about free bonus sewing needles.

    • -5

that is a very dark comment.

      • +7

Turn your brightness up. Looks fine to me

      • -1

I went to a night club once with some friends.
A mate said "It's pretty dark in here".
        I said "I think it's fine - I can still see where I'm walking"
But my mate wasn't referring to the amount of light.

    • Are you sewing your insides back together?

    • -1

      U sir win the internet!

    • lol so wrong

  • +8

The vandalizing acts of a few mutts and the ongoing scaremongering means the farmers who put in their time and efforts are not going to be paid what they deserve. FFS, these are the people that produce the food we put on our tables. How about a little consideration, people?

I am capable of empathising with other human beings in their time of distress, and I'll therefore continue buying strawberries, and will chop them up before eating.

    • +1

They employed these 'mutts', perhaps more considering should be put into the who they get to work on their farms?

      • +3

Fair point that the finger could be pointed at those who chose to employ such individuals, but I'm under the impression that it has yet to be proven at what point in the supply chain the insertion of needles actually happened - ie. was it during picking at the farm, was it during packing, was it at the distributor, was it during transport, was it during unloading, was it in the retail stores, etc…

        • +2

I'm not pointing the finger, but you do raise a good point about when exactly it may have occurred.

What a world we live in where eating fruit is now a valid concern.

        • @Lorindor: yep. But I do agree there should've been more scrutiny over employment practices too.

  • +3

Needle free…..great…..I hope they weren't expecting us to pay more for the ones with the needles.

  • Needle free or free needle? Now that's a bargain.

  • -3

    Comes with free needles!

  • Won't stop me buying fruit, will make me chop it up first though. Time for some cameras in the fruit section to catch any mongrels doing it there.

On a side side note, there was a guy in America that was convicted of dropping his dacks and rubbing fruit on his bare backside then putting it back on the shelf. They had to destroy all the fruit out at the time - no amount of peeling off the skin, or washing it, would make me eat that fruit.

  • [VIC] Bushy Park - 18punnets for $9.99

    • but this is their normal discounted price when on special..

      • What's the discounted price when they're possibly contaminated?

  • That's a lot of strawberry smoothie!

  • I'm disgusted at some people's behaviour on here.
The farmers are already going through very tough times and extreme circumstances (not even to mention some committing suicide) and then to polish it off you have some d!ckheads ruining the industry further for everyone.

Guess what happens if we don't support our farmers??

    • +1

Almost everyone here supports the farmers. Some people are just concerned about what the effects might be if they get contaminated fruit, which I can understand even if I don't agree with them. I think we would all like to take turns kicking the backside of the people who have been doing this horrible thing.

    • -1

If you wanna support the farmers so badly, why not just donate to them directly instead of buying their product that could be harmful to your well being??

      • I do donate to the farmers actually through ruralaid - can't tell how much you do, probably not much.

Simply giving them money for the short term works, but long term it won't.

As for it being "harmful to your well being" just look in the damn strawberry beforehand!!!

    • I still buy / eat strawberries. Had some yesterday, will have some later in the evening.
We are supporting our farmers. We pay tax and some of the money will go to those farmers. So, either we support them now, or the government will use more of our tax money to support them later.

  • $5.99 for 15 Punnets at Harris farm willoughby. Just bought one.

  • can someone buy the whole lot and processed this into jam

  • +1

$5.99 a tray at Harris Farm Broadway NSW.

  • 15 Punnets of Strawberries, that's about a 100g pack needle as bonus, not bad deal.

    • -2

dude, imagine if you or your immediate family / friends are farmers. Your comment is very heart-wrenching. There's no need in it if you reckon this is not a bargain for you.

  • MOFOs who wanted a wage increase or whatever will now have no jobs! :@

    • Difficult to know what the motive is until they are caught. I'm holding off on speculation until that time.

      • The motive probably was to destroy the fruit industry as he or she is disgruntled about the industry and businesses. It must not be financial it must be hatred. He or she needs to unslash wrath upon everyone. Probably a lunatic. It's possible it's done by a group not just one person

Organised, planned and executed without a trace

Have to say it's gonna be hard to catch these crooks

  • +1

This season has some incredibly sweet and fragrant strawberries. Just pick up the deep red strawberries.
I haven't had strawberries like that in a long time.

Also, support the farmers because these scumbags with the needles are going to put a bunch of farmers out of business.

Just to give you perspective, the more farmers out of business the less supply we will get in future.

Another good thing is, use them for Jam or juice.

These copycat people for different fruit are also scum bags, trying to put other farmers in even more trouble.

I honestly, have a massive gut feeling the apple and banana needle reports were some media attention seeking act from individuals.

    • I agree, I usually moan about flavourless strawbs but this season has been a great improvement. Most of the punnets I have had have been really sweet.

  • +1

We shouldn't had been seeing this kind of "bargain" posted here in the first place, if not because of the sabotage. Wish all the Aussie farmers best of luck in this period of difficult time, and of course as usual we our family here always supporting them directly/indirectly.

  • +2

I hate seeing food go to waste, especially good food.
This whole needle debacle has caused people to be injured, mass amounts of food wastage and has financially hit farmers very hard.
There are some very low people in this world.

Anyways, I'll be buying the strawberry's and just checking them for needless by cutting them up.

  • -3

If a needle get stuck in your throat, swallow s piece of banana and thst will get rid of it. This is a known fact.

    • +2

and it will bring the needle down your throat/stomach/gut/ rectum? my advise, always seek medical help in this kind of scenario.

    • What if the banana also has a needle in it?

  • +2

    Sew cheap!

  • We just need to support strawberry farmers by posting strawberries point of sale in OZB.
I live around Chadstone (VIC) and keen to buy straight from the farmers.

  • I have been assured they are needle free!

The only assurance is to try every strawberry! Just like QA each match.

Nevertheless, we are supporting our farmers by buying strawberries at our local HF.

  • Let's just say, there's some real pricks out there sabotaging the market, and that karma will take care of them..

    • Agree karma will get them! Those who did that are real coward.

  • +1

A good source of iron. And steel.

  • Breaking news: Needles have been found in Bananas now

    https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/today-show-host-kar…

Expect some sort of discounts for bananas in the up coming future.

  • $100,000 reward to catch one of the criminals.
I'd actually turn in pretty much anyone I know if I knew they did this. I don't want to know them any more, and the money would be nice.

  • Not buying anymore

lucky it wasn’t glass ….metal detector can check for a needle so easily scanned, glass can’t be scanned so,would have been worse.

  • -1

I'm sick of people shortening the name to "berry". It is not a berry. I don't like "strawb" either, but at least it isn't wrong, merely annoying.
