OzBargainUber

Found this code while cleaning up my inbox this morning :) It was actually sent by Uber late last month but somehow buried under my other emails.

Code: OzBargainUber
Discount: AUD $20
Expiry: 28 March 2018

I think, like other Uber coupon code, that it's first-ride only.

RipperRides gives you $22 off first ride
Groupon also has $20 off first ride for $0

    • +31

Why bother going through Groupon if you can use an ozbargain exclusive code?

Wouldn’t you think that we should reward our own community to maybe let Uber give us better deals.

      • +1

Ozbargain credit expires 28th March, but looks like Groupon credit expires end of June?

    • +5

      RipperRides has expired.

      • -1

it was posted on ozbargain as an active code

        • Still seems active: https://www.uber.com/en-AU/airports/

          This one's on us

          Get your first ride free
          Use promo code RipperRides.
Australia only. Valid on first ride up to $22 AUD. Expires 2/1/20.

edit: promo code says invalid :(

  • -1

Does anyone know why I cant use this code or RipperRides ? I am using a "new" registered phone number and email.
Can uber track if the phone/device has been used previously for getting the new rider bonus ?

I get the following message: "Too many users have entered that promotion code. The redemption limit has been reached"

    • +40

i would assume it is because "Too many users have entered that promotion code. The redemption limit has been reached"

      • Well that doesn't seem to be the case because people are still using 'RipperRides' and it seems to work.

But in any case thanks for a very educated comment.

        • no prob.. to answer the 2nd part, no uber do not track the device itself.

did you try the groupon one?

        • Yep. That doesnt seem to work either.

        • got me stumped then .. new number, email etc for an account should allow for the first ride credit

update: see ja912son's comment below, that could be it

        • @subboy:

are you using the same payment method?

        • +1

navman is trying not me :)

        • +1

          @subboy:
          clicked the wrong reply :D

        • Yes uber now tracks phones through unique identifiers.

The only one to get around it is to root the phone and then change the unique identifers. I haven't tried it myself but read the steps online

Can confirm I asked uber to delete all my accounts

        • +1

@subboy: I have found that Uber does track the device itself as I am unable to make new accounts on my device as too many accounts were made on the device

        • [@Ozziebargainhunter] [@AussieMark] [@subboy]: Thanks for the replies.

I will look into changing the unique identifiers.

All this seems a bit over the top though. What if I sell my phone to someone and they cant use these promo codes ? Even the referal codes dont work any more.

        • @navman86:

Tracking device doesn't make much sense, as phones can be sold to other people who might try to be the first time user of Uber. Denying their discount would be unfair, just because they are using a 2nd hand phone which has registered Uber app before. I could be wrong tho.

        • +2

@ja912son: It doesn't really matter if it's fair or not if it's going to prevent people regularly defrauding Uber.

        • @ja912son: My 2c is that 'unique identifier' refers to your app store account, Google / Apple.
You don't suddenly become a new user when you get a new phone, and as said your phone won't stop another user when you pass it on.

        • @subboy:

How are you sure Uber doesn't track your device?

How many accounts have you setup on your phone?

        • [@chinezejew] I am not positive it is what i have been lead to believe from conversations in the past.. and from comments above I/they may be wrong.. I was under the thought process that phones can be sold so it would not make sense. and I only have 1 account on my phone as I like to be honest :)

      • No way, that's too logical!

    • +5

I think Uber tracks credit card/paypal accounts.

      • Thanks mate. Any way to verify this ?

        • All I can say is once I was denied the first time user discount with new email address and new mobile number, along with new name.

Other than that, I guess it would be extremely hard to verify, since it's not some sort of public knowledge.

        • @ja912son: interesting!
Maybe I will try a different paypal account.

      • +1

I think Uber tracks credit card/paypal accounts.

I think so too that's why I don't bother making new accounts anymore.

  • So ozbargain is like youtube. If you get enough traffic people will just send you free stuff.

    • +9

ozbargain is way better than youtube

      • +3

Yeah, OZB comments are way better than YT

  • +3

    UberEATS plz,

Been in Bali this holidays, UBER is fantastic. No more haggling in the street with cabbies who all just quote different prices, call an UBER and travel easy. Great for bigger trips, been awesome

    • Same in Thailand, they give out so many promo codes I always ride for free!!

  • +23

It's about time Uber started rewarding existing customers for their loyalty rather than continuing to try and lure in new customers.

    • I agree.
I am also surprised that there is anyone who has not yet had their first Uber trip.

      • +2

Not everyone has Uber in their area. I don't (country Victoria). So although I have used Uber whilst visiting Melbourne, my daughter actually booked and paid for it. So I keep my eye on the codes for when I do use it for the first time next visit.

    • That one time on Halloween where they discounted existing users and it was the one weekend I didn't need to use it.

    • +1

      Why?

      • -1

        Brand loyalty.
        Loyalty discount.
        etc etc.

        That's why.

    • +2

Surely saying it's for OzB is sarcastic cos they know full well most would've already used one of their dozens first-ride coupons!

    • +1

7-Eleven had a discount on Uber gift cards last week for existing customers.

    • Yeah, the first time promo didn't even work for me, ended up paying $9 for a 2km trip. Should have just caught the bus.

  • +1

A noob question, I've register with Uber last year and install the app on the mobile but I haven't book any Uber ride. Can I still use this promotion code?

I just try to enter the promo code but it say " A new user promotion is already applied to your account" I don't recall I have a promotion code enter :)

    • +1

You probably signed up with a referral code initially, this will still be active on your account. Probably for $10 off or something. It'll apply the first time you ride but won't be visible under payment section.

  • +2

Reported for not telling us sooner

  • I'm rooted, anyone know how to change my phone identifiers?

    • Xposed installer has got few modules for that

  • -7

    I quit driving uber!!!
    Boycott uber!!! greedy bastards!!!

    • +5

they are retards and they dont want to pay their contractors well, you pay for petrl, your insurance , your wear and tear and when an acccident happens, they throw you in the bin. the most unethical company to work for.

    • -7

Agreed. I drove for uber for a year and ended up making a loss of around $1300 (Vehicle broke down due to the wear and tear of driving and cost of repairs nullified all profit)

If you take an Uber, do the right thing and tip the driver - they really are doing you a favour.

      • How much is the right amount to tip the Uber driver?

      • +5

No ofc brah, but there isn't really tipping culture in Australia at all. Also I've been over a dozen uber's and I'm yet to receive anything like a complimentary water or lollies that I here Uber users in America do.

        • +4

I've had beers in an uber waiting for me in San Diego once. Against the law - 5*

        • +1

@Gringoesai: I'd tip if I was offered a cold one. Atleast $8-10. A good way to make money for the driver.

        • Do Uber drivers need a license to serve alcohol?

        • @muncan: You can give a drink to your mate/guest. You can't sell it to them. If your friend wants to give you a gift, in turn, I don't think there is anything illegal about it.

        • Whatever you feel like, I usually tip $5-$10 on short rides. There may not be a tipping culture in Australia but considering Uber is a service from a country where tipping is customary, it makes sense to tip the drivers as the uber cut is 20-30% of the ride fare - hence drivers aren’t making as much as you’d think.

What I hated most was the riders who bitched about my not having complimentary water or lollies or all that other bs that struggling drivers feel they have to comply with Uber’s recommendations to keep their arbitrary ratings up.

        • @El Grande: it’s illegal if you stop in a no-alcohol area & passengers have open alcohol.

        • @cityofsydney:

If you tip that much you may as well take a taxi with their more expensive fare. The idea of Uber was it was cheaper than a taxi.

        • @cityofsydney:
Wow - you should hand in your Ozbargain badge.
The main reason I use Uber because I can see the final price with no surprises such as additional luggage, passengers, tolls or what not - and no necessity to tip.

Edit- I just reread the comments, and see that you are or were an Uber driver. So you see things from the Uber drivers point of view not the rider. No wonder you ‘usually tip $5-$10’.

      • Think I'll stick to taxis.

      • Were you full time? How many KMs did you do in that year for Uber?

        • Define “full time”. 30,000km-ish

        • @cityofsydney: Just gauging whether it was your primary job, full time meaning not casually.

The average car does around 18,000 km per year.
I'm probably just being argumentative really because I feel like Uber is not to blame for your car issues, though having said that, after 30,000 km for Uber + 18,000 km of your own use, you'd need to buy tyres and at least 1 service, so yeah, there goes a good chunk of cash on 'work consumables'.
          Tax refund?
I have no idea how much Uber pays per km.

      • +3

If you take an Uber, do the right thing and tip the driver - they really are doing you a favour.

Really bad suggestion. The last thing this country needs is employers underpaying (Yes, I know drivers are individual subcontractors) their workers, and relying on tips to earn a sustainable wage.

Cabs are more expensive (partyly) because their model is sustainable.

If the only difference between an uber and a cab was the price, I'd be happy to pay the extra for a cab.

Unfortunately, the smell, odd personalities, lack of driver rating, amongst other factors continue to make uber the attractive option.

    • Sorry for your unfortunate loss but you negged the deal for personal reasons!
Uber is an evil machine or a platform for some! So are all and every company out there. Guess why! Because they are there to make profits and not listening to socialist crybabies. But you have an option, the freedom of choice, don't work for evil Uber or any other company if it is not your platform.

  • Where to get all these new accounts??

    • You could get a free sim card that is on here every so often I guess.

      • But Uber limits the number of accounts we can set up with the same device.

  • +3

107 + votes on the deal and not a single comment that the code worked for them…who is giving away these +?

    • +1

Code works fine, I voted as I think it's a good deal, not because I can redeem it.

      • It's not really a good deal though… I mean it is… but It's also a stock standard deal that uber have been handing out at train stations for the past 12 months…

If I see this deal in public, usually it involves avoiding eye contact and walking straight past it.

  • Damn… I just used uber for the first today. Although it only cost me $9.77, could have got a freebie.

  • +1

"A new user promotion is already applied to your account", never taken a trip, and don't see any promotions applied…

    • +1

I'm in the same boat whenever I try to enter a code.

      • +1

I asked by email, their response is I had redeemed a previous new user promotion which is now expired. So I guess no dice, we are not wanted as customers because we took too long to take a ride! A bit annoying, oh well I have uninstalled the app now.

  • Not sure if this has been mentioned before, people that use Uber regularly may or may not know this but surge pricing is actually figured out based off individual users and there habits so for example if you generally take the first Uber available wether surge pricing is applied or not. That is learned about you and therefore in future surge pricing is re targeted at said user. Unethical af but no surprises hope this helps.

  • I have just applied the code to my Uber account and it appears to have accepted and is stored in my account. I will take my first Uber ride this Sunday so I hope it will work.

  • The code worked for me last week. Thank you op

  • Thanks, got one for visitors from overseas!

  • Thanks Scotty, code worked for me. First Uber account setup, look forward to me first trip, hopefully not at my username 😉

  • First Uber ride coming up tomorrow (yes there's still some of us out there!)
    Thanks Scotty

EDIT: Quick question, does Uber allow paying in cash upon arrival to destination? I'm guessing NO. Only asking because it's a work trip, my boss has offered to come down and pay the fare at the destination but from what I can tell that's not an option anyway. Failing that I'm happy to pay using AndroidPay or Paypal but I'm just curious.

    • I don't think paying cash is an option.

      • Didn't think so, no worries. On the bright side I'll save the company $20! :)

        • FWIW I got up to Brisbane and the app wouldn't work for me. Kept failing to verify my pay methods, Paypal and 4 credit cards, nothing was working. Ended up paying $105 on a taxi instead (Uber would have cost $40-50 after discount). The boss picked up the bill and didn't care but I would have still liked to hand over an expense half the size. I'll try again next time.

  • Would have been nice to tell us not to use a referral code (which appears right below your text) as it prevents you from using this code!
