Very good airline to get to and from Vienna.

    • is it via Taipei?

    • Did you do the direct flight to Vienna or the one with a stopover in Bangkok?

I'm doing this flight in under 2 weeks and was just trying figure out if the stopover in Bangkok was painful or a breeze.

      • +4

Via Bangkok. I didn't love it, but it wasn't horrendous. Security easy and fast enough. The terminal is extremely long (not that you'll have to walk much to get back to the gate), and while the food outlets are generally pricey, you can find some interesting Thai snacks and drinks at reasonable prices if you go for a wander.

A Priority Pass wouldn't go astray, as there are a few lounges there, though I didn't burn a visit being only there an hour or two.

Most important consideration IMO is your transit time in Taipei - an overnight or 12 hour day layover is perfect to get a feel for the city, try its food, see its culture.

        • +1

Food outlets are pricey in Bangkok airport ? Have you been to the restaurant opposite the metro entrance? It’s like $3 for a curry

        • Can I ask is that a technical stop in Bangkok? Flying to London in a few months and we have a technical stop at BKK, was unsure if that meant we’re actually allowed off the plane or not during that hour.

Edit: Sorry just realised you mentioned security so it would seem it’s not

        • Awesome, thanks for that.

I'll be flying into Taipei the day before the TPE VIE flight so yes, definitely getting a feel in the city as I've not been to Taipei before.

Someone further down has mentioned a tour of TPE too so looking into that as well.

      • is there a direct flight BNE to VIE ?

        • +3

No direct flights from BNE to anywhere in Europe

        • +3

Only direct flights from AU to Europe is through Perth.

  • Would love those prices to Paris from Perth 😢

I flew with them late last year Brisbane to Milan. There was a 16 hour layover in Taiwan on the way there, but you can spend the day in Taiwan doing a tour etc. Otherwise, the flight was great - cattle class had good amount of leg room. I had to pay extra for seat selection - which if I remember was about $70 per flight, per person. Just factor this into your total cost

    • +2

      Why pay for seat selection?

      • +13

Well I don't really want the girlfriend falling asleep on someone else's arm

        • +6

          Jealous

        • +2

Usually I take the hit and fall asleep in someone else's arm.

      • +1

Never have. Picked up great travel & food tips from my fellow passengers.

    • +3

Aw man, I hate when 'full service' airlines do that.
Okay, paying for extra leg room seats or exit row I can understand, but paying just to select a standard seat.. come on…

      • +1

yeah and it makes it all the more awkward when they have issues and have to shuffle people. I was on a Jetstar flight last month and we had been moved to a larger plane with different configuration due to a technical issue with a previous one, with two flights merged together - everyone was jumbled up, you had one parent and one child sitting 8-10 rows away from the other parent with two more children - things like that.

If they didn't charge for seat selection, it'd be more forgivable, but people were discussing how they'd paid money to select to sit together. Just raises the expectations and I think a few expected a refund but hardly worth chasing them for <$100 for a group, but it then meant people were less understanding about it.

Bummer, if only there was a direct flight from Bne to Europe with flat beds for 1k….

Recommended. Used them a couple of times, had very good experience.

Eva Air is premium Taiwanese airline, if you like China Air then you will have no issue with Eva Air.

    • Is China Air any good?

      • +1

        China Airlines https://www.china-airlines.com/au/en

Yes, they are good. Our home carrier can't match on food, service, lounge, and inflight comfort.

Eva, Cathay, Jal, ANA, Korean Air, Asiana, China Airlines flying out of APAC over Qantas any days of the week.

      • if you like Eva Air then you will have no issue with China Air

I wish EVA flew to Melbourne too or at least offered cheap domestic connecting flights to Brisbane.

Here's the seat map and an economy class review.

    Best to book direct.

The Brisbane to Taipei leg and the return is according to beatthatflight on a 737.
Which would have been a solid no from me as 9 hours on a narrowbody is gonna hurt.
When I checked the flight on seatguru it's actually a 787-9

    • +3

Checked flight radar, it shows Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner on the past flights.

    • +1

Has been a 787 for as long as I can remember. Get to watch the nice green tail fly past my verandah on a regular basis, normally around 7:30pm ish…

    • +1

EVA doesn't even have any 737s.. they use A321s for narrowbody

  • +4

Awesome. And out of BNE to, so no expensive domestic legs to ruin a great price.
Plus a free day to explore Taipei on the way.
    Paid $1061 BNE - MPX.
    Thanks OP.

Taiwan tourism board offers a free half day tour out of TPE airport. Used to be either leg of the layover only. Not sure about now.

When I transited via TPE, landed early morning, showered in the lounge, went with the tour, left the tour alone (signing a waiver), then catch a train to explore TPE. Shower and freshened up at the lounge. Night flight and slept my way into Vienna.

On the way back to AU, left luggage at the airport locker and then went out to TPE city, joined one of those free tour (tipped $20USD). Same routine after exploring TPE.

Top tip for the free half day tour - you need to signup a day before your arrival

    • I think the tours are limited to 18 people - best to book ahead.

When do the good prices come in for Dec-Jan flights? 🫠

    • +1

Never - because they're school hol period. Best thing you can do is book as early in advance as you can. Check each airline to see when their flights get released and bookmark them on your calendar.

  • +1

Business class fares are eye watering. Economy fares involve lengthy stop overs and in some cases 3-4 stops return leg. Complex google exercise. Good luck.

  • I'd much rather go with EVA than China Southern, but they charge SO MUCH to choose a seat.

It's an extra $353 per person on these flights.

My Partner is a very nervous flyer so we have to do it. On China Southern picking a seat is free, so it works out cheaper.

  • Heya, does anyone now how to extend stopovers so that we can make a longer trip (i.e. like 10 days) in Taiwan? Does that need to be arranged thru the airline?
