ANZ FF/Rewards Black CC 75k QF/Rewards Pts ($2,500 Spend 3mths) + $0 First Year

930

You know those AMEX Statement deals you see posted here sometimes where you can get WISH gift cards for more than 5% off? Here's a card that's free for the first year with an awesome bonus points offer which you could use to get some of those offers!

Previously posted here with an expiry date of 27 Feb (3 hours ago). This has simply been extended, and appears to have no specified end date.

This covers both the ANZ Rewards and ANZ Frequent Flyer range of cards (not sure about the previous deal?), which is great. From some of the ANZ deals posted last year, some users reported applying for both and getting the bonus points for both. If you can do that, great!

For context, 75k Qantas Points can get you a one-way Business class fare (excl. taxes) to destinations like Singapore, Hong Kong.

75k Rewards Points can be converted to 37.5k Velocity Points (2:1), which can then be converted to 27777 KrisFlyer Miles through Velocity (as opposed to converting direct from ANZ Rewards to KrisFlyer, which would net you 25000 KrisFlyer Miles).

Summary of the cards that are part of the offer:

  • ANZ Rewards Black: 75k Rewards Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 3pts/$. Visa Earn Rate: 2pts/$. Annual Fee: $375
  • ANZ Rewards Platinum: 50k Rewards Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 3pts/$. Visa Earn Rate: 1.5pts/$. Annual Fee: $149
  • ANZ Rewards: 25k Reward Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 2pts/$. Visa Earn Rate: 1.5pts/$. Annual Fee: $89
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black: 75k QF Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 1.5pts/$. Visa Earn Rate: 1pts/$. Annual Fee: $425
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum: 50k QF Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 1.5pts/$. Visa Earn Rate: 0.5pts/$. Annual Fee: $295
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer: 25k QF Points w/ $2.5k spend within 3 months. AMEX Earn Rate: 1pt/$. Visa Earn Rate: 0.5pts/$. Annual Fee: $95

Note that the annual fee does not apply in the first year as it is waived as part of this promotion.

Apply for the highest card you're eligible for, as the bonus points on offer are higher, you get a higher earn rate on spend, and in the case of the black, you'll get unlimited lounge access to certain branded overseas lounges.

Conditions (for the Black cards):

  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Have a good credit rating
  • Be a permanent Australian resident, earning a minimum annual income of $75,000
  • Be a non-Australian permanent resident with more than 9 months remaining on your Visa, earning a minimum annual income of $75,000
  • To be eligible for the bonus points, you cannot have held this card in the last 12 months, else you will be ineligible for the bonus points component of the card

Other questions/tips/tricks:

  • In my opinion, the 75k QF points > 75k Rewards points. However, the ongoing earn rate on the ANZ Rewards cards are better, due to (imo) the superior nature of the rewards program. It is flexible and can be converted to Asia Miles, KrisFlyer, Air NZ Dollars or Velocity. Velocity sometimes do promotions where you get an additional 15% Velocity points when you transfer your points. Essentially the earn rate on the ANZ Black Rewards is 1.5 Velocity points whilst the ANZ QFF Black is 1.5 QF points. However, in my view, considering the opportunity for promotional sweeps from programs into Velocity, ANZ Rewards Black offers the better earn rate.
  • The 12 months limitation (ineligibility for bonus points) is indeed applied/enforced with ANZ, unlike direct AMEX issued cards.
  • The earn/transfer rate of cards is expected to drop in the coming months due to the recent decision made by RBA to limit the surcharges that merchants can pass onto consumers. Several banks have already reduced the earn rate/transfer rate (Citibank).
  • You can apply for both an ANZ Rewards card and an ANZ Frequent Flyer card and get the bonuses on both.
  • I have heard from others anecdotal experiences that you can also even apply for an ANZ Rewards Black and ANZ Rewards Platinum (for example) and get the bonuses for both, despite both cards being from the same "series". i.e. in that case, you would get 125k Rewards points bonus.

Be a non-Australian permanent resident with more than 9 months remaining on your Visa, earning a minimum annual income of $75,000

  • This has to be like the 12th this is up on ozbargain. Getting old.

    • +2

      True…
but I'd have to say if you're able to get the highest card, it's amongst the best bonus points offers I've seen, largely down to the fact that the annual fee is waived too. At this level of bonus points, I think it's the second time I've seen it here?

      • True for the qantas points. Anz point not so much

        • Just have to wait another 4 months before I can apply for this offer again… hope they keep it around.

        • @sagrules:

How do you know you have another 4 months? Do you have to know the exact date you cancelled? I had one last year (paid annual fee too), but could not remember when exactly I cancelled mine?

        • @plain_biscuit: I called them up and asked and they told me the exact date, but if you do call them can you let me know if there is leeway in terms of applying on the 11th month or something haha :)

  • Anz have reduced all their rewards points per dollar spent from mid march, dont waste your time

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2497329

    • I disagree. This card is equal to Westpac on the Amex earn rate, and it better than the Westpac altitude black on the non-amex rate.

Amex on both schemes pays 1.5 points per dollar
Mastercard with Westpac earns .625 points per dollar
Visa with ANZ earns .75 points per dollar

      • But only 0.5 to the $ if going for Velocity through Rewards on the Visa

      • -4

Amex? hardly anyone accepts it without a surcharge, makes it not worthwhile at all for points

        • +1

I'd average 40% of transactions going through the AMEX (I don't use it if the surcharge is higher.)
I'd say the number of merchants accepting it (with same/no surcharge) is growing.

        • +2

You've got to think outside the square on how to maximise. Groceries and fuel are non-surcharge. Paypal is non surcharge, which means ANYTHING you can buy with paypal can be funded by the card. Also - a load of things I've bought this month have the same surcharge if you are Visa or Mastercard.
I've had a big month, with two business days to go before the end of the billing cycle and I'm at just shy of 18000 points this month, mostly from amex.

        • @McFly: Only 40%? Not sure where you're shopping or dining but I reckon I get closer to 90% of places I go to accept AMEX without a surcharge.

I think the AMEX surcharge / places not accepting it is becoming rather dated now.

      • I have the ANZ Rewards Platinum at the moment. Changing over to the CBA Platinum/Diamond awards, once I hit enough points to order another voucher. The CBA cards give a better rate of return (no annual fee for me on either card though - so haven't done that comparison).

    • From whirlpool;

2000 points gives you a $20 gift voucher from myer

Equates to $740 worth of Myer gift cards for 74,000 points. Does anyone know what other rewards vocuhers can be redeemed?

    • +3

I'd argue that the for majority of people on Ozbargain, the deal is in the bonus points and not the ongoing spend.

Having said that, you can expect the majority of credit cards will be reducing their earn rate soon, given the recent decision by the RBA to limit the surcharges imposed by merchants. With this in mind, this is still a great card for all the other perks, particularly the unlimited Veloce lounge access. Once the majority of the cards have reduced earn rate, they're all going to be "equal".

  • -4

Is there a minimum spend? can I apply get the points and cancel the card?

    • +4

      1) read the title
      2) yes

      • 3) See Number 1

    • +1

You're new around these here parts, ain't ya?

  • +2

Wow, you couldn't just report the previous deal and get it unexpired?

    • Oh.. sorry I didn't think about that. Happy for that to be done if the mods wish to do it this way?

      • +1

do not worry, thanks for posting this deal

      • +1

        Ignore the grump.

This brought the deal to a new wave of people, without harm.

  • I tried applying, but the form did not recognise my suburb which is now 3 years old so I couldn't proceed past the first page.

    • +2

      Call them!?

      • yeah just not on the weekend

  • Has anyone got experience being approved with less than $75k income ?
Do they want to see $75k net income on ATO assessment notice ?

    • I haven't had experience doing this, no, but I have heard that they have a ~10% tolerance (i.e. +/- if you're within 10% you should be ok, but don't quote me on it).

    • Two recent pay slips is what they request. I was borderline and was approved. I recently applied for a credit limit up to $20k and was again approved with pay slips. I asked them to apply using gross amount as I salary package a lot.

  • $0/p.a. First Year

Don't you think it's important to mention the annual fee after that is $425?

Can this be paid with points? If so, how many?

    • +2

Most ozbargainers cancel their cards within a year. I have a Woolworths credit card I will be cancelling soon.

      • Doesn't cancelling your card affect your credit rating?

        • Nope but applying does.

Actually.. Not sure how the new comprehensive reporting process has affected this, but at least the way it used to be was if you made an application, an enquiry would be made to your credit file. This had no relation to whether or not you were actually approved for a card, but as long as you made an application, you would add an enquiry to your credit file whereas canceling a card didn't do anything except reduce your "liabily" (credit limit) from a further borrowing point of view.

        • Cancelling your card will be positive for your credit file as less credit now

    • Yes, agreed. Added.

But as heal has said above, most just cancel within a year because they get the card for bonus points.

Not sure if it can be paid with points, but even if it could, it probably wouldn't be at a good burn rate so you would have to do some calculations first to see whether it's worth it.

  • The OP has the annual fees mixed up between QFF and ANZ Rewards tiers.

  • Does anyone know if you have one card (ie ANZ Rewards Frequent flyer) and uou apply for the same card but platinum if you would get the bonus points?

Or can you only double up if you get the ANZ rewards vs the frequent flyer cards?

  • Has anyone tried within 12 months of closing a card and if they have got their rewards?

  • Anyone got their rewards bonus points?

  • Is it worth since it's affecting your credit file?

  • I applied and was accepted a week ago but haven't got my cards yet. Annoyed that I didn't apply earlier because I would have jumped on that cheap business class BNE-NRT deal posted the other day!

  • I received the rewards points the month after reaching the minimum spend and cancelled shortly after

  • OK, i'm going to cancel my current FF black card and re apply for the black FF card. possible ?

  • How long do you have to have been earning over 75k for to be eligible?

I was paid slightly less in Dec-Jan (not paid salary + holiday break) and was rejected the last time I applied … even though it was previously and currently above $75k equivalent.

    • They didn't even check my payslip when i applied… just showed them my id .. and that was all

      • They didn't ask me either

    • I was approved for this last month, they asked for my 3 months of bank statements to show my income.

  • Just wanting to check, I had the Platinum card and cancelled last June. If I apply for Black is that different for the points? Am I eligible for the 75k? Happy to check with them if no one here has the answer :)

    • I would guess not as most of the T&Cs state that the 12 month period is on any credit card with the same company.

      • +1

I believe that it applies to any Frequent Flyer card.

So you could apply for the non FF cards within 12 months of having a FF card and still receive bonus points. Or apply for a FF card within 12 months of a non FF card.

    • See this.

But as what uder said, if you had the Rewards then get the Frequent Flyer version. If you had the Frequent Flyer version then get the Rewards. You should be eligible that way.

and if you had both? Don't bother (like me)

    • Just back from ANZ branch and got confirmed if I have any ANZ rewards card in the last 12 month, no matter it's Platinum, black or any of FF rewards cards, I won't be eligible for the new offer. It is also applicable to the second card holders.

      • The first part makes sense, but applicable to second card holders? That doesn't sound right..

        • Yes, I asked the same question. The staff explained that the bank had the 2nd card holders' names in their history.

  • Previously posted here with an expiry date of 27 Feb (3 hours ago). This has simply been extended, and appears to have no specified end date.

FWIW, the Qantas web site says "24 March 2016".

  • +1

if you own the black already then can you apply for the platinum or still counted as have owned in the last 12 months?

  • Be aware that bonus points take up to 3-4 months to appear.

    • i emailed anz and they said

Points are allocated within 60 days of the eligible spend criteria being met.

      • Well they are telling different stories then. I met the spend criteria a month ago and emailed them. They advised up to 3 months. And I'm also aware of people on Aus frequent flyer having to wait up to 4 months for them to appear. Fingers crossed it is 60 days. Would love mine to come through within the next month.

        • same

i need to cancel it asap to be eligible for next year

  • Am i understanding this right?

Apply for card. Meet conditions. Get 75k FF points in 3-4 months approx. Cancel card.

Repeat after 12 months (if a similar deal appears)

Seems too good to be true (If you meet all the conditions)

    • Correct. These sorts of deals come up quite often. It's not that unusual but that's exactly how it works!

The main reason not to cancel your card is so that you have another AMEX that is eligible for all those AMEX statement credit offer deals that often get posted here. The more (unique) AMEX cards you have, the better because each card can only be used once.

      • Yep, that's what I've been doing.

        • Yep but the drawback is lets say you keep a card open for AMEX statement credit offers, then close your account, and 11 months from the time you close your card this offer comes up again, you'll be like, damn, maybe I should've closed it earlier.

It's just something you have to consider.

        • @illumination: There's so many good AMEX deals, it makes sense to reach for the stars :)

        • @Josh.straw84: I agree.
Because even though you'll miss out on this one, you just somehow know that there'll be another deal from CBA, Westpac, NAB or AMEX direct around the corner!

      • Yes but your credit record could look a little crazy to any bank wanting to give you a loan.

  • +1

I have had the ANZ Platnium card for a few years and I spend probably over $100K a year on it. The points for cash rebates are the best you can get. Be warned though - I received a letter a few weeks ago stating that from 14/3/16 AMEX card will now earn only 2 points per $ (not 3 as stated above) and the VISA will be 1 point per $. This is why ANZ is doing this promotion - to lock in new customers before the points drop. Its still a great card but just giving you the heads up.

EDIT - The Annual Fee will also drop to $40pa according to the letter.

    • I don't know if I'd say it's "still a great card". The ANZ Platinum Rewards card WAS a great card for Amex expenditure pre July 2015. Then came the first significant devaluation for non-flight rewards (a redemption devaluation). Now the current changes (a devaluation on the spending side) coming into effect in 2 weeks will take the Platinum card well down the ladder from its previous lofty perch. For non-Amex expenditure it will be a joke, for Amex expenditure it is still a shell of the card it was prior to July 2015.
Also, it's not the Annual fee that's dropping to $40pa, it's the "Account fee" component of the Annual Fee.

  • I rang ANZ and they confirmed that they will check if you have closed a QFF rewards card in the last 12 months when they issue the bonus points.

  • +1

Just got approved for the Black, despite credit score being toast LOL.

I rang ANZ and checked last month when I closed my old cards, turns out it was March 10. Now that's not going to stand out when they review my points transfer at all…. :D

  • Points came in the other day

    • +1

Did you apply for this deal or one of the previous ones?

      • This one, 2500 spend, not the Pre Christmas 7.5k

  • +1

Don't ask me how, but the mrs' got her points 6 weeks after recieving her card. Met the spending criteria at the 4 week mark.

  • Hi guys, can I pay my rent with the card?

    • +1

Depends on your real estate agent.
I think in most cases no.

However, there is a website which allows you to possibly pay your rent with your credit card, but not worth the surcharge imo.

  • +1

According to the Qantas web site, this offer has been extended until 11/5/16.

  • I couldn't find anywhere if paying your ATO notice of assessment is considered an 'eligible purchase' - can anyone shed some light?

  • Iam goinjg to cancel the platinum Visa and go for this

    • Note the 12 month rule.

      • I checked and my platinum wasnt linked to FF so they said I qualify; will put it through so will advice

        • +1

Ah, no worries, you're fine then.

Good luck - I was surprised to get approved given my credit score when I applied! :D

This deal is probably the best on the market atm. :)

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: it is, I received my card, just waiting for the PIN to come through and looking forward to the points after meeting the spend requirements

  • Is purchasing gift cards considered to be eligible spending for the $2500?

    • +1

So long as it's going through as a normal transaction, e.g. through Woolworths, or buying them online through a merchant (but not as BPay or the like), of course.

      • Does it matter what online merchant I purchase from? For example, are those 5% off WISH gift cards from CashRewards fine? Sorry, I'm new to this…

        • Shouldn't really matter, but yes CashRewards is probably the most popular place to buy the WISH eGift cards

  • Is it normal for them to request income verification after online application? Haven't got this before when I applied for my previous credit card. Does everyone get this request or just those with potentially borderline credit rating?

  • Why is this deal now labelled as "Expired"? The website still seems to show the offer…

    • Hm I think it was either set by me or set by a mod a while back.

I'll try to get it unexpired.

      • The Qantas website says it expires 11 May 2016.

    • +1

Looks like it's no longer annual fee free?
