You get considerably better value cashing in points for flights or upgrades than for gift vouchers.

That said, it's not that good value - SYD-LAX return runs you about 160,000 points, so the 50k points are worth around $410 in flights.

      • +1

plus you still have to pay around $800 in airport fees for said syd-lax flight too correct?

        • +1

That actually includes all fees covered - otherwise it's about 90,000 points return + $700 in fees.

  • I am a long time plat EDGE holder, but never had the qantas amex ultimate card before, am I eligible for this offer?

  • Hmm does a corporate green amex or BMW amex count as aamex issued card (and therefore not qualify for this deal)?

  • +2

I called up Amex to Cancel my Discovery card.. and they said I am eligible for an offer of 23,000 Qantas points if I stay a customer.. Needless to say I still have my discovery card :)

    • +1

      When did you call?

      • +1

Just before I posted. so about 2 hours ago I have been a customer since 2010 if that makes a difference

    • That sounds interesting, I was planning on cancelling my Discovery Card as well, Can you shed some light on this "offer" for 23,000 Qantas Points, I may drop an hint to retention team if I have some information about it.

      • Not much to say really. I wanted to cancel my card as they dicked me around for 2 weeks trying to get 7000$ Credit (Coles Balance Transfer) as a cheque. Ended up going to the FOS to get it sorted..

Once the money was in my bank account, I called them up to cancel the AMEX card, mainly because I have the NAB Platinum card now (0 annual fee, 40k Qantas points) which gives me 1.5 points per 1$, as opposed to 1 point per 1$ with my discovery card.

When I called up to cancel she said are you interested in 23000 points if you don't cancel your card, you are eligible for it? & I said yes..

Having said that, when I cancelled my card the other week before I went to the FOS to get my 7000$, they person on the line didn't care and cancelled my account… The only reason it was re-activated was so I can upload a document for AMEX to get my money issued as a cheque.

TLDR - Try cancel your card and see if they offer? Otherwise you can always re-activate your card if they give you nothing with no issues.

  • +1

just for general information 56k Qantas points is a flight one way from Perth > Los Angeles. Return was 112k

  • +2

You can buy a fully refundable qantas flight and cancel the flight once you get the bonus points

    • ? Why would you do that?

      • +3

        for this part?

2,500 Qantas Points will be awarded after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services in Australia.

  • +1

I didn't get instant approval but got an SMS notification some three hours later congratulating me on the card approval. No emails whatsoever though.

    • +1

      havnt gotten either :(

  • Approved via mobile application.

    Gotta love them free points.

  • ah man, current amex holder, miss out damn!

  • Wait a minute, no where on that page does it say there is ever an annual fee or how much it is.
Also - it states that there is 'No annual fee', and doesnt seem to limit it to only the first year either.

So, why are people saying that it is $495 a year after 1st year?

    • Its actually $450, if you hit apply, and then click on key facts sheet.

  • Did anyone go to finder.com.au and found that it is showing $0 annual fee as well? I called Amex too and they said in their system it's not showing as no annual fee for first year. They reckon it's a system glitch.

    Link below:
    http://www.creditcardfinder.com.au/american-express-qantas-u…

I want to apply for the card but need clarification on the annual fee part.

    • I would say it is fee free for the first year, given the limited time offer?

    • When I rang them, "system glitch" is the answer I got too. They reckoned they wouldn't honour it.

  • +1

I have an ANZ Platinum Amex, at first glance I saw 3 points per dollar on this card, but for everyday purchases, the ANZ Platinum is actually better (1.5 points per $ on everything). Is this right?

    • +1

50,000 bonus points for $500 spend is even better!
      (100 points per $ spent)

darn it, Im not illegible, closed my velocity Amex less than 12 months on June 2014

    • +12

      Oh you're illegible alright

  • Hooray approved, thanks OP :)

  • +1

They have now fixed the technical glitch. Fees of $450 p.a. can now be seen.

I wonder if they would honour all those who registered before this update.

    • -1

Maybe people are misreading this (unless it got changed)..?

"$0 annual Card fee for Supplementary Cards6 so you can earn more points"

Also clearly now states that the annual fee is $450..

      • Got changed.

      • +2

        NO
It was $0 annual Card fee just now they change it to 450

  • yes please post when anyone get card with the confirmation free annual fee for the first year~

  • Just called, they confirmed that it was an error and the marketing team is going to work out if they will honour the $0 annual fee for the first year. The lady told me to call back on Thursday and if they decide not to honour it, they can cancel my card.

    • Did you end up calling back?

  • I've just been approved moments before the change back to the $450 annual fee, will be interesting to see how this goes down. Cards are in the mail apparently… stay tuned

  • This will be interesting… I also got approved before the annual fee change.

  • +2

    oooo that drama!

    • +2

agree - this kind of drama is giving more excitements than getting the good deal itself!

  • I'm still in the middle of the application. Not sure if it's worth submitting.

  • If anyone still interested in applying for these cards rather use the referral links which have a higher bonus point offering and everything else the same (note the $450 fee on the Ultimate card):
10,000 bonus points on the Discovery card
60,000 bonus points on the Ultimate card

    You loose

    • +15

I suppose I do feel a bit looser after a snooze

  • +2

Applied and instantly approved earlier today when it said $0, took a screenshot too. Be interesting to see what happens!

  • +1

Can any of you who took the screenshot upload it as an image for us who applied, got approved, but took no screenshot please?
    Thanks.

  • +3

I cancelled mine - they said on the phone they wouldn't be honouring their mistake

    • +1

You shouldn't have cancelled. I spoke with them yesterday and they are still working with their marketing team to remedy. I spoke with them yesterday where they said it was a first year fee waiver only. All their calls are recorded. As I understand it, contracts law requires they abide by their advertisements even if a mistake, let alone two in my case.

      • +1

Not sure about credit cards but for "Goods" Contracts law states that a "price" is only an invitation to make an offer. The vendor is still able to accept or reject that offer.

So when you take your 2L bottle of milk to Coles, they may reject your "offer" and charge you more.

However that's old and archaic. These days, false advertising or misleading and deceptive conduct laws apply so usually these large companies will just bow down and let you have the goods.

But, interesting thing to keep in mind for smaller purchases/smaller businesses.

        • +1

I reject paying advertised prices, and look forward to haggling at the checkout!

        • +1

AMEX confirmed today they're honouring the 1st year annual fee waiver.

  • +5

Hmm, smells like Financial Ombudsman to me. Would be very surprised if they wouldn`t oblige after a complaint has been lodged.

  • Just spoke to amex. Apparently they haven't finalised what would happen with the mistake on their website. But there was the likelihood of "a" fee being charge, couldn't tell me more. Said call back when I receive the card and I can cancel then.

  • Just received SMS to say I was approved, applied 24 hours ago. Whats the terms for returning an unwanted card without being charged an annual fee (if that suffices)?

    • +1

You could try waiting until you've got 50,000 bonus points before complaining…

    • Just dont activate it

    • +1

AMEX is honouring the 1st year annual fee waiver. Confirmed today over the phone. Letters will be out in the mail next 5 days to those approved.

  • Interesting, i was approved quite early on yesterday. Have saved the screen shot provided by 'freelife' above and wait with interest for a response.

  • How are people saving screen shots please?

  • my wife got hers honoured but because i cancelled mine on the misinformation of their consultant telling me "it definitely won't be honoured" i missed out.

    • Interesting, I just got my card and wasn't sure what to do.

What did your wife do to get it honoured?

      • +1

        easy.
just refuse to pay annual fee and show them evidence (screenshot) and then threaten with fair trading & financial ombudsman if they dont honour.

        • I tried this but didn't work. Should I just call back again?

        • +1

how can it not work. it's bullshit. I'm actually gonna try say it's $0 for ever because the screenshot doesnt even say $0 "first year"

    • How do you confirm the $0 annual fee will be honoured?

  • Applied Monday arvo and card arrived in the mail today. I guess they want me to start using it asap.

    • +2

I just got off the phone with AMEX and they said they just made a decision today (Wed) to honour the 1st year annual fee waiver for me. Not sure if it's global so best you call and find out, if you did apply.

      • Hmm.. my call said it definitely wouldn't be offered and they tried to offer me the Amex Discovery card instead which is $0. I had the Ultimate card arrive this morning and it is now cut up and cancelled. I didn't activate it and they sounded resolute even after me saying I had screenshot.
I am sure another good offer will come up.

        • When i called up the rep had no idea about whether there was a mistake or not but on my account number she said there is no fee listed and if there was a fee it would be there as part of the order that create it, and its not… so she said no annual fee first year.

The lady also said that regardless there is a 60 day grace period so can cancel within that time and fee is reversed.

        • there is a 60 day grace period so can cancel within that time and fee is reversed

Ahem… that sounds like there's sufficient time for everyone else to sign up for the card now blissfully ignorant of the $450 annual fee, scoop up the bonus points, then cancel the card requesting the fees to be reversed. No?

        • +1

          @muncan:

T&C's state "Please allow 8 to 10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met for the points to be credited to your account."

  • +1

Just phoned up this morning to get confirmation that its first year free and that they'll be sending me a letter to confirm this

  • +1

yeah me too.. they confirmed first year is free

  • The guy I'm talking with on the phone this morning indicates they know about the $0 annual fee error, but will NOT be honoring it. This is in contradiction to what others are reporting.

    • I called this morning as well .. he said they are honouring it… may be try again…

    • I had the same as this, but "it is currently being investigated" and that the fee will apply on 13-March if I don't cancel by then. I got that from a supervisor. Anyone else?

  • Anybody knows how does the domestic Return flight works with this card.. I mean is there any condition to book it ?

  • +4

Total bait and switch. Got called by Amex guy who was quite rude and didn't want to acknowledge error. Was adamant that fee was $450.

  • +2

Got my card today, spoke to a lady called Cindy.
She said if your application time was during the website error you will be refunded and get a year free.
The fee will be on the first statement and be refunded the next.
Ask for her if you have any issues, she seems switched on.

    • +2

It is amazing how useless they appear to be with handling this. Everyone who calls has a different experience. In spite of what i was told i expect to see the charge come through..

      • +1

The charge will come through but will be refunded "apparently"

  • Just got off the phone this morning at 9.40AM with Jessica. She stated that their fraud team is looking into how the deal was posted as it is not valid. Will not be honouring the first year free. Also (and this is the kicker) their cancellation system is down so you can't cancel right now - need to call later today/tomorrow.

  • -2

relax people. stop calling up seriously… all your doing is making them aware of the problem and getting their legal team all over it.

just use the card and then when it's time to pay the fee, dont pay it and dispute it at that stage.

  • +1

Receive the card today didn't call them yet
If anyone receive a letter saying that they waive the fees for the first year please post it

  • +1

Called this morning. Confirmed it would be waived for the first year

  • So anyway, I got my card and the documentation with it.
Turns out - I am not a new amex member- Yep I forgot I had an old AMA American express card which I havent used for about 5 years.
So I called up AMEX to cancel my new qantas card (thinking I would have to pay $450).
They told me due to this 'glitch' they are not charging $450 for the first year. I will not however, receive the bonus 50k QFF point - dammit.
I will be able to get the free domestic flight though

Oh well. Still a win I suppose. Should've cancelled my old AMA Amex prior to signing up though.

  • Just called and spoke to 'Ben', was told that yes there was a $450 annual card fee but that due to the error with the website they had been told they will be crediting this charge. Said the fee will show up on March 13th statement if it is charged to account. It should then be credited automatically but i should keep an eye on it and if it is not credited, ring back up again. I made sure to document that i spoke to Ben from the account services team at 6.00pm on Sunday the 22nd of February haha.

  • +1

There still seems to be so many conflicting responses from Amex. I have had one person say flat out 'No, the fee will be $450' and then called back 5 mins later and had a guy tell me that the $0 first year will be honoured. Now there's people saying they wont get the 50,000 points. What is wrong with Amex? Has anyone had any responses today?

  • +1

Hi N1ck, there seems to be only one person stating they would not receive their 50k QFF points, however this was because they are not a new AMEX card holder which was a stated requirement originally.

I think as long as you keep a record of who you spoke to and at what time you should be fine, as long as you got someone to tell you they would be refunding the annual fee that should override the person who told you they will not honour it :)

  • +4

    Success!

I sent through an email (logging into the Amex account page) to enquire about the fee. Their reply (in writing:

    Dear ——-,

    Thank you for writing back.

Yes, this has been a technical error at our end. Please be assured that we will be pro-actively refunding all our Card members impacted by this error. The Annual Membership Fee of $450.00 which will be assessed in your first statement will be refunded and credited back to your Account in due course and your Card will be a First Year Free Card.

Please be assured that you are a valuable Card member for us and we appreciate your business.

I hope you'll continue to use American Express as the Card of your choice and refer us to your friends and family.

    Sincerely,

      Written proof! Even better!
