Does this count if you have been an AMEX member in the past?

  • +7

"Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer."

  • +2

Does anyone know if being a supplementary cardholder is treated as being an existing card member?

    • -6

      Yes, somebody definitely would know…

  • +2

note it's up to 50,000 bonus:
    "
    42,500 Qantas Points after you spend $500 on purchases with your new Card within the first 3 months of becoming a Card Member;
    5,000 Qantas Points after your first eligible purchase with the new Card;
2,500 Qantas Points will be awarded after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services in Australia.
    "

    • Wonder if 'selected Qantas products and services' includes buying a gift voucher.

      • +1
        1. Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions.

I think it will make it easier for people if you can add the eligibility criteria below:

      the last point:
" if I hold an existing American Express issued Card"
kind of contradict with " This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only. "

      ???

      • +3

Well it doesn't make you exempt from getting the card, just the bonus offer.

  • Would have jumped on this if having the plat edge didn't exclude me.

  • +6

What about bank issued cards which also include an Amex card, like the ANZ black or NAB FF?

    • +8

Rang them up and confirmed that it is only referring to AMEX issued cards and not bank issued ones.

      • +6

I also rang them up and I can confirm this.

  • +1

These always seem popular. Is there a good post outlining the "strategy" used? I imagine along the lines of signup for lots of cards, get points, cancel within a year.

Seems like it'd have credit rating or approval problems (who would want to issue a card to someone who's had 10 in the past year?)

    • yes, that is the "strategy". nothing special so no detailed post required. basically joining for the free points + card benefits and then cancel card when gotta start paying for it

and yes, it does make it harder to apply for credit cards when you apply for a lot in a short period of time.

but that's not stopping me from trying to apply for this anyway lol

    • Read the comments from a previously similar deal. It may cause you some hassle but if you're paying them off before interest, a reasonable bank shouldn't have a problem loaning you money.

      • +1

More card providers then banks. If I was AMEX and I saw they were likely to flip I wouldn't want to give them a card. They need people using them to make money.

Trying to figure out if the benefits outweigh the potential risk.

        • there is no real risk.

you probably already have a credit card anyway. so the only risk is you wont be able to get a fancy card later down the track. but you if you cancel your existing card and make enough money, there's no reason for them turn you down.

        • +2

Yes, but there's always a significant percentage of people who have the intention of "flipping" that don't. They do the math, this equates to business. Much like cash back deals that require postage etc to claim your cash back. People are inherently lazy.

        • @edwinlin88: Is there an estimate on how much money/savings people make?

I thought I saw someone say 5,000 QF was about $20 the other day. So this card would be $200 worth of flight savings, upgrades I assume. If you got 5 equivalent cards a year you might get $1000 of 'benefits'?

        • +1

well this card gives a free domestic return flight ever year as well. so add another $200 or so to that.

but yeh 5000 qff = $20 is a good rate to use.

some people may get more benefit from it using it for things like upgrades if they already have lots of QFF points

        • @rochow:
i thought saw people selling 1 point for 1 cent to others?

        • @edwinlin88:

Might give it a go; concern with things in general is sometimes the "savings" don't eventuate and it ends up more hassle then it was worth, need to select wisely.

        • +4

with this particular deal you don't get 50,000 automatically. you have to fulfil spending criteria…

also… took me less than 5 minutes to apply for this card.

ive spend more time replying to comments in this thread lol

        • +1

          @erwinsie:

The value of the point depends on what you redeem.

        • @sween64: sorry i meant selling to other people (ie via family point transfer feature)

        • @edwinlin88: Spending $500 in 3 months is no worries, groceries alone would knock that off quickly.
2nd one seems to fulfil itself completing the first one.
Not sure about the last one, could probably find some cheap product but if 2500 is worth ~$10 anyway not going to spend hours on it :)

  • does an amex card issued by ANZ classify as one issued by AMEX ?

    • no, that's a bank issued AMEX

  • Does anyone know more about the free return economy flight you are eligible with on the Ultimate card?

"Complimentary Qantas domestic return economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services"

    • I'm also curious.

Complimentary Qantas domestic return economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services

I am struggling to make sense of the T&C’s – would Qantas spend be required every year in order to activate the free flight for that year, or just an initial spend with Qantas using the card to unlock this benefit for the life of the card?

Also I wonder if gift vouchers would qualify as a selected product / service?

Selected Qantas products and services are: (a) Qantas passenger flights with a QF flight number purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly with Qantas or some travel agents or (b) purchases from Qantas Travel shops. Excludes: Qantas Holidays, Qantas Freight, Jetstar and Qantas branded non-airfare products operated by third parties e.g. Qantas Box Office.

      1. The Qantas domestic return flight in Economy class between selected Australian capital cities is available for booking by Qantas American Express Ultimate Card Members. All flights are subject to availability and neither American Express nor Qantas guarantee that seats or tickets will be available on the dates or at the times you may wish to fly. Seat availability may be limited to certain dates and/or flights and it may be more difficult to book seats around public holidays, school holidays or special events. Some flights may not have any seats available for redemption. Route availability is subject to change without notice. All travel is subject to Qantas Conditions of Carriage available at qantas.com. No Qantas Points will be awarded for travel on these flights. Subject to Qantas American Express Ultimate Card Insurances and Domestic Return Flight Conditions available here.

I have this card (have had it for years, fee free, but that's a different deal I managed to get with them…).

It's quite simple. Spend money with Qantas, and it activates your free flight. Note that the free flight network is extremely limited, and you can't originate in Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane and fly to Perth, however you can book a Perth-east coast-Perth fligth with the free flight. This is required every year. It's one free flight per membership year, not calendar. When you pay your annual fee, you then have to spend with Qantas again to activate that years flight.

Works out great for me. I nest my fares, book a PER-east coast-PER flight, and then book separate flights to Perth and from Perth to start/end the free one. Works out 2 for 1 for me, but I fly Virgin for tag-on flights.

There is a map of the flights available on the card, here: http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/ultimatef…

      1. Each Flight must be a non-stop return flight between a Departure City
and one of its corresponding Arrival Cities in the table below.30
        Departure City Arrival Cities
        Adelaide > Brisbane Melbourne Sydney
        Brisbane > Adelaide Melbourne Sydney
        Melbourne > Adelaide Brisbane Sydney
        Perth > Adelaide Melbourne Sydney
        Sydney > Adelaide Brisbane Melbourne
        Canberra > Melbourne Sydney

      2. To book: You agree to follow booking procedures for Flights as advised
by American Express from time to time. To redeem the Flight,
American Express can be contacted between 0900–1800 Monday
to Friday. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, American Express
Membership Travel Services will process your booking.

      3. After a Flight has been booked, no route changes are permitted. If you
wish to change the time and/or date of a booked Flight, contact
American Express Ultimate Priority Service. Such changes are at Qantas’
discretion and at the time of making the change you must pay:
        (a) The standard Qantas Change Fee (as at 1 March 2006) is AUD38.50
including GST per person per ticket, but this may change without
        notice from time to time;
        (b) The difference between the ticketed fare value and the fare for the
new booking plus applicable GST and new or increased, surcharges,
        fees and taxes payable;
        (c) Any other applicable fees plus applicable GST as charged by
American Express. Currently the American Express re-issue
fee is AUD27 including GST per booking.

I see only "No annual fee", where does it say no annual fee for first year?

    • +1

      I'm also curious about this.

What will the fee be after the first year?

      • $495 annual fee.

        • Where did you find that very expensive nugget of information

        • +3

          @Asim:
          I rang them up.

        • +1

@nadan: Also available here (although this says $450):

          https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/frequent-flyer-ca…

        • @nadan:

So when you spoke to them, you confirmed it was no annual fee for first year? $495 after?

I got approved, but took a screenshot in case, would be good to know if you also received verbal confirmation. Cheers!

        • @leareth:

No, I didn't confirm that, but I did mention that I understand that the first year annual fee is waived but don't know what the annual fee will be after the first year, after which she checked and said $450 or $495 which I can't remember exactly.

        • @nadan: I rang to confirm the waive of the fee. They told me there was no such offer. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183118#comment-2571729

        • @leareth: can you post it?

    • Having the same problem. It only says "No annual fee". Where is the "for first year" part?

  • +1

I s'pose I should go for this deal rather than the 40K NAB one. This obviously doesn't included a VISA but that doesn't bother me.

    • Or go for both?

      • I earn $75K pa. I'm currently cancelling a $10K limit CC and will apply for one to replace it. I also have a $2k limit 28 deg CC. Am I likely to get both? If I apply at the same time will both NAB and AMEX be aware I'm applying for an additional CC? 90K QFF points would be nice.

    • thinking along the same lines also. Though I am loaded with credit cards at the moment and wondering if I should get rid of my ANZ Amex/Visa before applying for this one. Don't want a knock back.

      • look at the interest free period card offers that abound now. zero interest betters home loan redraw rates. but look at what can be transfered to free packages ie cash advances., if balances low check the fee which may equal interest.

      • I just closed my ANZ one with the intention of getting NAB.

        • Why not this deal?

        • @sween64:
Hadn't seen this one yet. I'm tempted to do both.

  • I hold a work issued AMEX - do you reckon I can still take advantage of this?

  • how easy is it to 'overestimate' your annual income? like what proof do they require?

    • +1

      Most likely payslips.

    • I'd throw in your super included as part of it if you want to boost it a bit higher. Also I know citibank didn't do payslips, they called my employer. I can see payslips being more standard practice though.

  • +1

My credit rating thanks the T&C's for excluding me :(

  • +1

Does anyone know if a card issue decline appears as a "negative" on the credit report?

    • it is reported.

suggest you get copy of record. can get 2 per annum. look up links on web.good luck

  • Dam I have the Discovery Card :(

  • forgot to mention for the upto 50k one

"Complimentary Qantas domestic return economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services"

  • I would go for this, however I only recently for the Citibank Signature Veda deal.
Don't want too many enquiries on my file.. mortgage coming up shortly :/
Although 50,000 QF points is quite tempting :P

  • -1

If theres an anuual fee after first year, whats the annual fee?

  • What's likely to be the minimum credit limit for the Ultimate card?

    • +1

On the last page there's a drop down box to choose your limit. Lowest (which I went for as well) was $3k

      • Why did you go for the lowest? Why not the highest you can get?

        • +3

Depends on your credit card situation - it all adds up when they do a credit check.

    • $500. I rang looking to lower my limit last month and was told the lowest limit they will set is $500 (which would nicely cover the annual fee and nothing else!).

  • Just got approved. Thanks Op

    • oh nice, you got instant approval? mine said they'll be in touch.. prolli means not approved :(

in saying that, NAB "approved" me… then never got back to me till i called up and told me i got rejected

  • $495 annual fee! Now that's expensive!

What if we were to get all the benefit and cancel before they charge first yr annual fee?

(Am I the only one who is thinking of this?)

    • No you aren't. I just did it with ANZ.

    • At least 40 people are thinking just that. It's what makes this a Bargain.

    • Of the thousands of people that will cancel before their cards renew, I'd imagine at least as many don't cancel for whatever reason. I cancelled all my ANZ cards with the exception of the Black FF card, as it makes me look like a badass every time I purchase something…
(Prey that my reminder to cancel that card just before it renews works)

      • actually the black anz card looks pretty tacky IMO.
the clear regular card looks nicer i rkn

        (i got both)

        • Once you go Black, etc etc

        • tru

  • Can you just cancel the card prior to being hit with the annual fee? Or just waiting untill you have got the 50,000 points then cancelling? or is there something in the fine print which states you cant?

    • You can do either just fine.

  • You can only have 2 AMEX issued cards at the one time.

    • I have three… where does it say you can only have two?

      • I applied and received a message to call CS. Was told I could only hold 2 AXEX issued cards at one time. I was given the option to ditch an existing card, but I decided to ditch this one.

        • Strange! I have a mix of products though, credit and charge, personal and corporate. Perhaps it's two personal cards only?

        • @drewbles: You are obviously a more valuable customer. May be the more income you have the more cards you can have. Mine are only personal cards.

        • +1

          @drewbles:

I was told by Amex that I can only have 2 credit cards. If I apply for the third one, it has to be a charge card. I guess you have 2 credit cards and 1 charge card?

I believe you can have more than 2 credit cards when the third one is a free companion card.

        • @Fishy:
that would make sense then yeah I have a charge card in the mix as well, so that would be logical.

  • +2

Hmm, I can't seem to find a reference to no annual fee apart from OP's link. If you search the card up by itself (or compare it to the discovery card like OP's link), both pages lists the ultimate card as having a $450 annual fee. Even the Key Facts Sheet in the application form has the $450 annual fee.

    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/frequent-flyer-ca…

    • Same here. I'm a little dubious that this may be a typo that won't be honoured (may "disappear" from the website?).

Wonder how the OP came by this link.

    • +1

Was wondering this as well. Applied for the card and took a screenshot/pdf of the page stating no annual fee. Will cancel if they charge $450.

    • +4

Don't expect this deal to last. I just got off the phone and they've told me it is a "technical glitch", will be removed shortly and will not be honoured.

  • +1

Im surprised at the rough guide of 50k points = approx $200.

Is it my imagination or wasn't it 128k points for a round the world ticket?

Or have things changed in frequent flyer points world and they are now worth far less than they used to?

    • +3

I think 50k points = $200 is referencing gift cards? Different dollar value depending on how you use the points I guess.

    • +1

Looking around, apparently you can get a $20 Westfield card for 3k Quantas points, so basically you can get about $333 using the 50k points.

      • +1

I would use the points to shop at qantas store when they have 40% off and above sale. 50,000 can get you items worth more than $400 easily.
