I got the "you'll get a letter saying the fee is going to be refunded" when I called pre-activation.

Can I also be the first one to say… WAY TO GO AMEX!! We should be shouting this from the rooftops to thank them (lazy call centre staff who didn't read the memo properly aside). They were under no obligation to honour the error and have in essence paid for all our return flights to another city, as well as a great rewards card. Sensational. I'll consider keeping the card for the second year as my way of saying thanks.

    • Hey Jb6

Do you know how you claim the return flights ?

If i read correctly you have to first purchase a flight before being able to claim the free flight and you can only book the flight via telephone number on back of the card ?

      • Yeah you just call them up. I haven't read that anywhere. According to the terms (pg. 29) you just have to pay the minimum on your "first and most recent" statement by the due date & have maintained your card in good standing… whatever that means.

        • Thanks buddy :-)

  • Has anyone received a letter in the post yet from Amex stating they will honour the no annual fee for first year? Called them up over a week ago and they said letters will be sent out to everyone who applied during the glitch.

    • +3

Yes, I received my letter today confirming that the first year is $0. Huzzah!

Any idea as to the cheapest way to collect the remaining 2,500 points on "selected Qantas products and services in Australia"? Or it's probably not worth it?

    • +1

we need to find cheapest way to collect this 2,500 points because only after that ( selected qantas products and services in Australia )we can get the flight

      • Can we ask for a cup of water at the entrance to a business lounge?

      • +1

what do you mean "only after that we can get the flight"? do you mean the one free return flight per year? because that just needs you to pay the minimum repayment on the first & most recent statements.

re: getting the 2,500 - From the T&C's:
Selected Qantas products and services are Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e. directly from Qantas and Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays and Qantas branded non-airfare products.

So… book a flight using some of the other 47,500 freq flyer points you just got, and you should earn the 2,500 extra?

Complimentary Qantas domestic return economy flight every year after your first Card spend on selected Qantas products and services

        • @TRAVLER: oh really? hmmmm

        • +1

          @jb6: yes rly

You are entitled to one Flight in economy class per year of Card
Membership after your first Card spend in Australia on selected
Qantas services^ in that year. A year is defined as the period starting
on the date on which the applicable Card Account is opened by
American Express (anniversary date) and expiring on the day before
the anniversary date each year thereafter. Your Flight must be booked
before the end of the year in which the Basic Card Member became
entitled to that Flight. Flight benefits cannot be carried forward to
          any subsequent year.

^ Selected Qantas products and services are: (a) Qantas passenger flights
with a QF flight number purchased on the Qantas merchant account i.e.
directly with Qantas or some travel agents or (b) purchases from Qantas
Travel shops. Excludes: Qantas Holidays, Qantas Freight, Jetstar and
Qantas branded non-airfare products operated by third parties e.g. Qantas
          Box Office.

        • yes really

        • +1

          @lolmao:
Could you pretty please define what counts as 'purchases from Qantas Travel shops'? This may be a stupid question but just want to make sure i spend the smallest amount i have to in order to get this perk :D

Did anyone get a $450 credit in their account? I just received it, but still havent been charged $450
So right now I'm +$450 on my account woot!

  • Yes $450 credit on 05.03.15 called 'Credit for membership fee', and got my frequent flyer points pretty much as soon as i met my minimum spend requirement :). Customer service by these guys is excellent!

I wonder if you could stuff them around by cancelling your account now whilst in credit ;) (don't do it)

    • When you close a credit card account (any) they work out outstanding balance including any annual fees due. Wouldn't have worked anyway :)

  • anybody know how do i book the flights ? do I have to buy something from Qantas selected product before I can book the free domestic flight ? bit confusing…

    • yes u do. how is it confusing

  • Logged onto my account had -$450. Called AMEX customer service. They were pretty awesome, said they'll honour their customers and I should see a +$450 soon! W00T!

  • Anyone managed to book the complimentary flight?

    • why not try and let us know (assuming you want to know as you have intentions of make a booking yourself)

    • Not entirely sure, but maybe its possible to book a fully refundable flight (eg. business class) first, book the free flights and then cancel it.

Would be great if someone can confirm if this works.
