My first post. I think/hope this counts as a great deal, having spent hours looking at similar Mini PC's on Amazon and Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Bing Lee etc.
Hmm, I just stumbled across/found this is maybe a duplicate of this post? (which is marked as Expired) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/870352

Because that is nearly $300 more expensive?

      • +9

$800+ more with similar ram and storage

      • +2

        Save money on power!

        • -3

Kinda meaningless if you have solar and battery

    • +15

Nice suggestion for the Apple fans. Alas, I am a Windoze user.
I am no expert (this is the first time I am even looking at the Mac Mini), but the Mac Mini looks like it $284 more, has half the SSD and half the RAM? The Mac Mini with 32GB RAM and 512GB SSD is $1,650 vs $531 (no idea if this is comparing literal Apples with Oranges).

      • +1

While I don’t think it was a good comparison to make - over 50% more expensive is hardly the same price bracket.

But the Mac mini would crush this in pretty much every performance aspect - if the user is willing to run Mac.

After you add extra ram and storage is losses it’s amazing price proposition, but man at the $800 it’s be hard to find a better performer.

    • +5

Upvoted, It is reasonable. I still considering between edu Mac Mini or take this win instead.

      • +5

Mac mini has a decent GPU

      • +2

I'd save up the extra few hundred and get a a Mac Mini. Put Asahi on it if you want to run as a home server.

        • Yeah, a Mac Mini probably last forever.

      • I'm thinking the same thing. I looked at this one and only one USB-C port. Mac Mini has five and three of those are thunderbolt. For me, Mac Mini is looking better again.

    Nice find OP

  • +1

    Nice first post OP :)

Does anyone know idle and medium usage power consumption? Might be keen to replace this with my 7060 mini. I use Linux with a few containers in Plex/Emby

EDIT: Answer here if anyone is curious: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15784285/redir

  • +2

Think $531 price has been a while before even for non prime users before this BF sale

  • +2

This would make a great HTPC

  • +4

    Nice find, thanks OP.

Hopefully will be good for Proxmox server.

    • +1

I can confirm it's an absolute beast. I've been running it for about a month now and it handles containers like a champ. I've got a whole stack of them running and barely seeing a dent in the resources.

  • +1

For the use of Photoshop, LR, capture one, stable defusion and couple hundreds of chrome tabs open. Is it best to get one of those budget 4060 win machines often offer here or the basic Mac mini with similar price point?

    • Personally I'd go the Mac Mini after seeing all the benchmarks of it on YT recently. Thing's a beast.

  • +3

Pretty serious power in that CPU. Beats out the Ryzen 7 5800H on a few metrics… maybe not graphics, but happy to be corrected on that.

    • +1

More cores and more threads means more VMs

      • olivertwist.gif

  • +2

RAM is not the newer DDR5, but DDR4 is plenty fast.

    • -2

From a quick google, it should be easy to change. But it wasn’t about this specific model.

      • +2

You will not be able to change DDR4 RAM to DDR5 RAM, whilst some CPUs will work with either the slots are physically different and the motherboard will only accept one type.

  • +2

OR similar AMD, cheaper : https://amzn.asia/d/18SyB57

  • can this pc hook up a graphics card?

  • What's the use case of this compare with a normal size desktop or laptop?

    • Firstly, we should talk about the elephant in the room. Price, price and did I mention price?

Secondly, do we need a different use case for it? It form factor might draw people to it while other want the mobility of laptop or greater option of desktop. To each their own.

    • Price, form factor
Compared to laptop, better to run 24/7 as a home server. The laptop battery is a liability in that case.

    • +1

Generally, it's based on power usage, form factor and price.

  • +1

    I just posted this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/881742
Seems better for the same price, less RAM but it is DDR5

    Edit: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-12700H-v…
    Maybe not?

    • @Ashura66

less RAM but it is DDR5

      @whyisave

RAM is not the newer DDR5

For the use-case scenario of this kind of mini PC, the diference between DDR4 and DDR5 would be less than negligible.

Even with high-powered extreme gaming setups, the difference is tiny, and mostly noticeable in benchmarking tests, and not in real world performance.

TLDR; don't worry whether your machine has DDR4 or DDR5 RAM, you won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

  • +2

any good gaming PC at similar price?

  • Is this better and cheaper than a gaming laptop?

    • +1

This is not portable - it doesn't have a screen or a battery.
It's also not a gaming machine - it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.
If you want a gaming desktop, then see the link just above.

  • +2

I’m waiting for this one to drop in price a bit. Seems pretty good value:

      You want the 90. Um890

      • +1

Do these come with Windows11, I cannot see a 'provided with' operating system listed.?

My bad - comment directly below inferring comes with Win11..

        • If u can find a deal on um890 pro. But yeah price expensive for it

Company’s FAQ: “We recommend all users to turn off Windows Automatic Updates. Avoid unusual bug issues due to updates.”

    • Sounds sus. Imagine if apple said that.

    • I have now seen the FAQ :-(
I will install all Windows Updates on arrival and advise if there are any issues.
I also plan to format and perform a clean install of Windows (just to be safe).

    • Mini PC arrived yesterday. I installed all updates plus optional updates from Windows Update. No issues observed.

  • +2

Bought this last prime day, running proxmox with several vm’s very happy with it and with pfsense vm utilising the 2 NICs. Had to contact support to unlock an extra setting in BIOS, very prompt to respond and helpful. It’s a nice looking unit too, well worth the money imho.

    • +4

Do you have the details on what and how you unlocked the particular BIOS settings?

      • No, they did it remotely.

        • Wait what?! 😱🤯

          • +2

@Saiya: I should have been clearer, they told me on remote chat the key combinations but I didn't take note of them at the time.

  • +3

Be careful with these independent/possibly Chinese computers. I nearly bought a mini PC which also had a very low price a week ago but some Internet searches showed that those mini PCs (KAMRUI brand) came with keyloggers and other malware. Some really sophisticated OEMs may put malware in BIOS/UEFI so installing fresh OS may not always work to make it secure/safe. Do some research before buying.

    • +3

exactly why till now still haven't bought one, hence I switched back looking for branded laptop deals again … lots of these simply too dodgy to trust except a Mac Mini!

    • Thanks. Yes, always worth being careful especially after finding this thread.
I will run a full scan with Windows Defender, Bitdefender and MalwareBytes when I get it, before entering PII
I also plan to format and reinstall Windows and scan again, just to be safe. I will then update the drivers/bios etc. then scan again.

    • +1

Would factory resetting via win 11 pro suffice in getting rid of any possible malware?

      • I wouldn't trust it. @ladonnn wrote a very comprehensive guide for reinstalling Windows on the BOSGAME P2 Mini PC here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/870352

        • “Download all drivers for the P2 from the BOSGAME website.”… to reinstall them later on new Windows installation? Err, no.

          • @AlexF: Downloading drivers beforehand lets you scan them on VirusTotal first - can't do that with preinstalled stuff. Though honestly, Windows Update drivers work fine for most people these days. If something specific isn't working right, you can always grab that one driver from the manufacturer and scan it then.

      • +2

If the malware infection is built-in, then using the native Win 11 reset (System / Recovery / Reset) will likely just re-install the original infection from the (infected) base image.

This is pretty sophisticated, and highly unlikely, but if you are paranoid enough, just follow @ThriftyBargainHunter's advice above, and do a Windows Defender, and maybe one other scan.

        @JohnDonovan

Yes, it's possible that some mini PCs may be pre-infected with malware. I mean…. anything is possible. I would not worry too much about the bigger-name players in the game, especially ones with hundreds of reviews on Amazon.

And as for BIOS/UEFI malware… this was a concern when it first emerged a few years ago. It hasn't really turned into the earth-shattering threat it was hyped to be. I don't think it is something that has ever really affected normal users in large numbers. Manufacturers have been pretty quick to address vulnerabilities (eg Lenovo).

Oh, and we should always realise, a vulnerability is not an actual disaster. So often I see people going on about MS, or whoever, releasing fixes for vulnerabilities. They are only potential exploit areas, and the fact that patches/fixes are released is a good thing.

    • Mini PC arrived yesterday. I installed all Windows Updates, updated Windows Defender definitions and did a FULL scan (took over 4-hours LOL).
Also installed MalwareBytes and did a FULL scan (including for Root Kits).

Neither program detected anything malicious or even PUPs.

  • +1

I would personally go for a miniPC like this HN2673 from Minisforum (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/135362239416?chn=ps&_ul=AU&mkevt…) which comes with similar spec 12th gen i7 Intel cpu and it also comes with an ARC A730M GPU so you can actually game on this thing on high settings at 1440p comfortably. I bought one myself at a similar price and very impressed with the performance. I mainly use it for vide editing and a secondary gaming PC. My only complaint is that the four fans built into the unit can get pretty loud but with headphones on I dont notice it.

    • +2

this is used though vs brand new. Hard to compare the 2.

  • I just found this AMD system on Amazon for a price that seems suspiciously low….. https://tinyurl.com/22hmwha8

    • +2

Don’t do it. I bought a mini pc a few weeks back. Thought it was worth the risk. But it was a dodgy seller. Check out their other items. Super sus! Only got refunded 2 weeks later after hassling Amazon.

      • Oh yeah no I'm not in the market, was just curious what I could find. Definitely dodgy!

  • Can anyone please let me know if this would suit light video editing, productivity & watching YT & the like? Thinking of pairing this with this Dell Monitor (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877370). thank you

    • +1

The i7 + 32GB RAM will handle light editing and YouTube easily. Should pair nicely with that Dell monitor for a clean setup!

      • +1

thank you! I missed the deadline for the discount, will wait for the next deal!!

  • +1

do these mini PCs come with Windows 11 Pre-installed?

    • Yes, according to the spec, it has Windows 11 Pro (and Linux). Will confirm later when the Amazon delivery happens.

    • Mini PC arrived yesterday. Can confirm, Activated Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed.

Amazon listing showed "Operating System = Windows 11 Pro, Linux" however, I don't have a dual boot option for Linux, so guessing this is an error.

      • +1

Or, do they mean it supports Linux, as other OS's will generally not work such as MacOS.

  • +1

Looks like a NUC. They are good for business machine but don't plan on using it for gaming much. Integrated GPU isn't that great.

  • Back to $759 today.

  • +1

    Back to 531$$ today
