I've been eyeing this model since that deal last month. Looks like it's back in stock and even cheaper now. I'm planning to slap Ubuntu on it and set up my own homelab/server. The price-to-performance ratio is insane! It's got tons of CPU power and RAM, so it could definitely handle a bunch of docker containers or Proxmox.

I'm thinking of using it for all sorts of stuff:
- Home Assistant for smart home automation
- Jellyfin or Plex for streaming my media
- Those arr* programs for managing downloads
- My own V2Ray and Wireguard VPNs
- Maybe even spin up some game servers when my buddies wanna play

A quick guide I wrote for reinstalling Windows on the BOSGAME P2 Mini PC for anyone who needs it:

  1. Prepare a bootable USB drive:
    • Download Ventoy and install it on an empty USB flash drive (at least 8GB).
    • Download the Windows 11 ISO from the official Microsoft website and copy it to the flash drive.

Quick note: I prefer Ventoy over Rufus because it allows for multiple ISOs on a single drive - Windows, Ubuntu, rescue ISOs, you name it. It's really handy for trying different OSes or having a versatile boot drive.

  1. Gather necessary drivers:

    • Download all drivers for the P2 from the BOSGAME website.
    • Get the audio driver from this guide (direct download link).
    • Extract all drivers into a folder named "BOSGAME P2 Drivers" and copy it to the flash drive. (Important: Make sure the drivers are not in zip form, as Windows cannot read compressed files during driver installation)

  2. Install Windows:

    • Connect the flash drive to the mini PC and boot from it.
    • Run the Windows setup. (To skip Microsoft account login during setup, follow this guide.)

  3. Install drivers:

    • After installation, open Device Manager.
    • Expand the "Other devices" category.
    • Click "Action" in the toolbar, then "Add drivers".
    • Select the "BOSGAME P2 Drivers" folder and check "Include subfolders".
    • Windows will install the drivers and prompt you to restart.

  4. Restart the mini PC to complete the setup.

That's a lot of CPU for your use cases except maybe the gaming servers. If it's something you intend to leave on all the time, you might want to consider something lower powered (n100/n97).

    • +1

I initially considered the N100 machines, but you're right—hosting game servers is a key reason I opted for this setup. I'm also leaning towards it for future-proofing and handling more demanding projects, like running light object recognition on my CCTV streams, which could really benefit from the i7's power.

I've also found some power consumption data for this machine, and it looks promising:
      Idle in Windows 11: 11.20 W
      Heavy Load: 94.78 W
      Off: 2.24 W

These numbers are better than I expected, especially the idle consumption. For a 24/7 server, 11.20 W at idle is quite reasonable, and even under heavy load, it's under 100 W.

Assuming the machine uses 15W on average per day, and with electricity costing 27 cents per kWh, the monthly electricity cost would be around $3.

I'll see how it goes, and in the worst case, I can always give it to my family if it doesn't fit my needs.

      • Interesting numbers. Small change, really.

How noisy is the fan on this machine?

        • Mine arrives Friday, and I'll test it out then. Reviews say it's audible at first but quiets down after 15 minutes.

        • +1

I tested it out today and I'm not sure if it's just my unit or if they fixed it in the new batch, but the fans are really quiet. I would say that it's quieter than my current laptop and significantly quieter than kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, even while stress testing.

          • @ladonnn: Will u reinstall a clean windows ? Below said the drivers have problem and cannot reinstall windows by yourself. Thanks really wanna if that is special case .

@aussiebg: I just tried to reinstall Windows and everything works fine, but you need to get the audio drivers separately. I wrote this small guide for reference and for anyone who needs it:

              1. Prepare a bootable USB drive:
                • Download Ventoy and install it on an empty USB flash drive (at least 8GB).

              4. Restart the mini PC to complete the setup.

  • Would the 760M in this one make the aminiforum be better for light gaming?

I’m wondering the same thing. Looking for a mini PC that can do PC gaming at 1080p at roughly the same performance as a steam deck. I have no interest in a handheld so I’m looking at something hard wired to the TV.

    • Yep, the 7640 is a generation ahead, so more comparable to the 13xxx Intels.

    • The 760M is solid for light gaming. Plus, integrated graphics on Ryzen, like the 7640HS, are almost always better than those on Intel CPUs, and it's even better than the graphics on the Steam Deck.

      • Cool thanks for confirming.

  • Im actually trying to choose between that or the P3 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0D7VCZNW4?smid=A1MJVDJ1AJ94HV&… which $629.

Intel i7-12700H with 32GB DDR4 vs Ryzen 9 6900HX 32GB DDR5. Which is the better performer in terms of using Photoshops and AutoDesk for work (and maybe VR)?

  • +1

Would something like this be ideal for a dedicated gaming server (heavily modded minecraft), or is too much of an overkill?

    • +1

An i7 12700H with 32GB RAM is more than enough for a heavily modded Minecraft server. It's not overkill if you plan to host large modpacks or many players, as the extra resources can enhance performance and stability. But it might be more than necessary for smaller setups.

  • Would anyone know if P3 has upgradable RAM to 64GB?
    I’m sure P2 does.

    • +2

      Both P2 and P3 are upgradable to 64GB (2 x 32GB).

    Wi-Fi6E

FYI. This model comes with AX201 which is WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E like some other Bosgame models.

    This is wild good value!

  • Does the receipt/invoice from company with ABN?

    • it's sold via Amazon tho? so you'd get Amazon reciept

      • Ship from Amazon, sold by Bosgame…

        • yeah but you'd still get an Amazon invoice ?
