MSI Prestige 13 AI+ Laptop: Intel Core Ultra 7-258V, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD $1797 + Del ($0 to Metro/ in-Store Pickup) @ Officeworks

550

Potentially a price error because the price looks like it should be the last gen Ultra 7 155U variant?

Seemed like a good deal for the specs and reviews. Lowest price elsewhere still seems to be $2400ish.

13.3" 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED display
Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 258V 8-core processor (12MB cache, 2.2GHz up to 4.8GHz)
1TB SSD storage with 32GB RAM
Intel Arc graphics
<1kg

To avoid officeworks cancelling the order if it was a price error I went and price matched it at JB-Hifi in store: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/msi-prestige-13-ai-evo-13…

Ultra 9 variant might also be a good deal. But it seems like a worse CPU for an ultralight.

  • can u put in more storage or SSD?

    • Pretty sure it has 1 slot only and thats filled with the storage that comes with.

    Is this a good price??

      Just read.

pretty good.. Though I can't see how it's much better than a Lenovo Ideapad Pro 5 14" that can be had a bit cheaper. The MSI is very light I suppose.

      • The MSI has AI

    • It's 1999 currently at the giod guys

    • +2

      it has AI

      • -1

Everything has AI in it nowadays, operating systems, web browsers, photoshop, search engines, wherever else a button can fit. And any computer can use all of them. It's not a special computer just because it says "AI" on it.

        • +3

Well technically it is "special" for local AI usage as the Core Ultra chip has a NPU (neural processing unit) for more efficient processing of some AI (machine learning based) tasks.

      • +1

        and has MMX technology.

pretty good deal. Wonder if it has a full sized 2280 m.2 slot or a crippled 2242 which is becoming popular in small thin laptops recently.
    edit
Looks like it does have a full size 2280 slot, if this is the same model.

A bit of a downer that the WiFi card can NEVER be upgraded. So.. if you still have this in five years it could be an issue.

Not an issue. I'm using a laptop from 2016 and it still works fine for its purpose. I can think of about 8 other family members who are on older laptops and they're still chugging along. I'd imagine the battery or something to become an issue before any wifi issues.

wow. Just set the security protocol to WEP so that all your old devices can join the network.

  • +6

Not a price error. This price was the discounted price several times through the year last year.

Also, the 2x8 models are more power-efficient but way less powerful than the 1xx models.

For example, the 2023 Intel Core Ultra 7 165H is more performant than the 2024 Intel Core Ultra 7 258V.

Don't fall for Intel's new naming convention.

    • +2

That's only true for multi threaded workloads. For basic work and gaming, this performance thing is mostly a nothing burger. Those who care about multithread workloads already know to avoid Lunar Lake altogether.

Those who care about multithread workloads already know to avoid Lunar Lake altogether.

Not really. I see plenty who went for this MSI laptop with the Core Ultra 9 variant (288v) thinking it was the highest-end performance they can get, not even knowing that it's a lower-powered efficiency-oriented processor rather than a performance workstation kind of processor, and that it even loses to the one-year-older Ultra 185H.

    • +1

This is their Lunar Lake lineup, you dont know what you are talking about

It was widely praised for the strides it made in regards to efficiency and performance, the iGPU is also significantly better now. Its not a gaming laptop chip why do you keep bringing those up?

      • It was widely praised for the strides it made in regards to efficiency and performance

Bruh that's what I said? More power-efficient but less powerful than 165H.

Its not a gaming laptop chip why do you keep bringing those up?

Where did I say it was a gaming laptop? I literally compared it to 165H. If I was comparing it to a gaming laptop, I would used an HX chip. I am comparing it to a workstation laptop bruh.

        • The 'H' moniker is used for CPUs that consume more power, usually used in Gaming Laptops. H and HX are both the same HX was like overclocked

This is a 'V' laptop its made for thin and lights, for whatever reason they are using a new letter because previously it was just 'U'

You are still comparing a chip meant for performance to a chip meant for thin and light, this makes no sense

          • @Freestyle: I'm comparing it to the pricing. You would be paying $700 to over $2000 in premium for what's analogously an Intel N/G to an i5.

      • +1

100% this is a massive improvement on the previous gen, ok some less cores but its way more power efficient and boost clocks are higher.

The equivalent from Lenovo is something like an x1 carbon Lunar Lake with oled touch (not sure if touch is an option yet). On the education portal, it's 3.3k+ once optioned to match these specs.

Sub 1kg adds a ridiculously expensive premium to a laptop. Oled touch 120hz and a 258v (arc140 graphics and 32gb ram) makes this a really versatile daily laptop.

The only thing missing is a 2 in 1 form factor. I imagine making that under 1kg would drive the price above 4k just because they can tout that spec.

If you're happy with a 1.5kg laptop with similar specs, you could probably save 300 dollars or so when 258v oleds go on proper sale. 1kg is a wanky detail that I personally care about, so I would pay the premium for it.

    Asus Zenbook S14 is also 3.3k+ https://www.asus.com/au/laptops/for-home/zenbook/asus-zenboo…

Pull the trigger or wait for hopefully better EOFY deals? How is MSI, quality wise?

    • +1

I will HODL for EOFY, bet lots of other brands similar specs will be all on sale too. Unfortunately this 13.3" screen too small for my eyes to read plus still worry about MSI build quality …

      • I just needed to hear from someone else.. couldn't trust myself. thanks!

      • are the others any better?

  • -1

    Can this pay GTA 6?

    • +2

      100% maybe… Probably or not.

  • Build quality is not so great. Chassis rigidity is sacrificed for light weight.

  • No mention it’s a touchscreen, so I Super it’s not?

    Damn, 1kg is light.

  • It’s one of the best laptop in the market. Only feature I miss on this one is the touch screen. Ultra 9 is with 2 TB SSD.
Less than a kilogram for a great laptop.

  • For those interested in light gaming, this video should give you an idea of performance. Additionally, you'd get slightly better frame rate at 1440x900p given how that resolution would scale on an 1800p screen better than 1080p.

  • The previous gen A1VM was only $1097 ATL, maybe wait for a while for this gen to drop more from other retailers
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879369

    • I would be more interested in Intel's 200V over the previous gen, significant upgrade for a laptop CPU.

  • +1

Oh finally Lunar Lake appears in the market properly

FYI they made huge strides in efficiency i think it was beating the Macbooks, it should def last all day.

  • bought this during boxing day sale. The screen is very flimsy result of being light. Manage to break the oled screen. Took forever to find the screen since this is a newish model.

So if you are a rough unit, i'd suggest looking elsewhere

  • +1

Yes this is a good deal, I have almost the exact same specs just the better processor, the Dell Pro 13 with ultra 7 268V / 32GB / 512 SSD and it cost a bit over $3K. The new intel chips are way more efficient than the previous gen, battery life is impressive, intel arc actually has some grunt to it compared to integrated, very lightweight, makes for a great business laptop.

  • Flimsy. Thinkpad X1 gen 13 is also under 1kg but built like a tank, no lid or chassis flex and a nice keyboard to type on.

  • I have this laptop and spent 2.3k on it which I thought was a good deal. Great battery life, decent keyboard.

  • Got an acer with a Ultra 7 155U for like $1087, likely isn't price error

MSI cost more but not that much more

  • Saw this laptop yesterday in OW and it would be an awesome buy, execpt I promised myself not to ever buy a laptop again with the split page+arrow keys. I have a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 with that layout and those keys totally ruined the otherwise great experience for me :(.
