is the RTX3050 much better than a 1050?

    • +6

      is the pope catholic?

      • No he's Zoroastrian clearly

    • +21

      about 2000 better….

    • +4

Here is a benchmark for the 1050ti vs 3050:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0jbDtco918

Notice that even the Ti variant is less than half the half the performance of a 3050.

    • Even integrated graphics is better than a 1050, that's a card from almost a decade ago 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • Ouch mine is 1050ti with intel gen 9th

        • Well it doesn't really matter unless you want to run games.
For general none-gaming use, any old random graphics option is fine 👌

  • +1

this is the castrated 3050 with 96bit but 2gb vram added

    • +7

It's not castrated - this 6GB model has an extra 512 CUDA cores (+25%) along with the extra 2GB VRAM (+50%) on the reduced 96 bit (-25%) memory bus

      NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile Refresh 6 GB

4GB = guaranteed and game breaking stuttering on many recent games
6GB = just enough for most recent games after dialling down texture quality

  • +7

Just remember it's a single SO-DIMM slot. No expansion.

  • +7

This is a great price for an entry level, but I've said it before, the 3050 in a laptop is one of the worst GPUs I've seen in the last 10 years. I've used and tested multiple devices fitted with a 3050 and everyone of them has performed abysmally.

  • How's gaming performance on this compared to this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876872
    Baldur's Gate 3?

    • This one is better. The one you linked does not have a dedicated graphics card. Baldurs gate is quite demanding

      • +1

Thanks, higher price for OLED and RAM only then? Would heavy editing be better on this one?

        • +5

Yes they are different laptops for different purposes.

Ideapad is made for non gaming tasks, premium laptop with nice screen and other specs. Light gaming would be fine, as the integrated graphics is quite good. video editing would be fine. Battery life would be better on this one too.

This one in the current post is a cheap entry level gaming laptop. Not super premium but it has a dedicated graphics card which is really important for gaming.

Hard to say regarding video editing, it depends on what editing software you use. Some work better with integrated graphics, some work better with dedicated.

When I say integrated vs dedicated, it means:

Integrated graphics are a smaller graphics processor built into the CPU. Often they are quite good at tasks such as video encoding/decoding.

Dedicated graphics is a standalone graphics processor on a separate chip. The best for gaming.

  • touch screen?
need a one for daughter to study everyday, while she use it to watch youtube and play roblox everyday
    Any recommendation?

    • +8

No touch screen, a dedicated NVIDIA GPU also is not necessary for roblox

      • many thanks

    • +1

I would not get a touchscreen computer for a student (unless they were doing graphic design). More delicate breakable screen.

      • +1

If it’s anything like my daughters school, they’re recommending a touchscreen (and stylus for use with OneNote)

        • That's interesting- that would suggest convertible tablets which I imagine would be much more breakage prone than standard form factor laptops.

          • @rumblytangara: Yeh, I’m considering this one for her https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5/len…

Probably have to go with the upgraded screen option though, 45% ntsc on the default would be 🤮

            • @NoDowt: I have no idea what 45% NTSC would look like, but unless they are doing digital artwork I suspect it's not going to be a big deal.

My kid was using a 16/512 machine for a while but at least the first year of high school doesn't require anything save a web browser, so he's just switched over to a lighter weight 8/256 machine. That 12 core machine you posted up seems a tad overkill?

I'm doing the ex-corporate route- a third or a quarter of the price and easily replaceable. It won't hurt so much if the machine breaks or gets lost.

              • @rumblytangara: Many say the 45% NSTC screens suck bad… especially because they are rated at that with peak brightness, when lowering brightness the colour reproduction drops too. With it looking grey & washed out.

With the 20% cashback, I’ll just eat the $120 to upgrade screen (longer battery life too), and going the 16GB ram model should hopefully allow the device be usable longer than a cheaper/ex-corp device.

                • @NoDowt: Perhaps I was unclear- the 16GB RAM machine which I recently took out of service is also an ex corporate laptop :)

(Now it's just become a backup to the 8GB machine.)

            • @NoDowt: Mind me asking what year is this for???

              • @rehan770: Sorry missed this… she’s starting year 7, hopefully spending a little more now will let it last through highschool.

    • I’m in the same boat… this would have been perfect had it had the touchscreen.

    • Just spotted this one that I may go with for my daughters highschool device… won’t be as good for gaming but should suffice for Roblox, and I’ll probably spring the $120 for better screen (45% ntsc coverage on the default screen 🤮 is pretty horrible for IPS)

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5/len…

      • great, many thanks

    • I’d get a MacBook Air.

If it’s to play Roblox and Minecraft, the MacBook is excellent.

Doesn’t get hot, no fans, battery lasts for ever, amazing build quality.

It’s only when you want to play some steam games etc… that you need a PC :-/

Can anyone recommend a gaming laptop in the price range of around $1,500? Occasional AAA game but doesn't have to be top settings

    • +1

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/outlet/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops…

This looks decent, no first hand experience with it though. Through the Lenovo outlet store.

Normal store has this at $1,899. There was an 18% cashback (uncapped) through top cashback a few days ago too which would’ve got it close.

Have a look at a few others here: https://www.lenovo.com/au/outlet/en/laptops/?tabkey=Laptops

      • Thanks I think they're refurbished units. Damn shame missed out on the 18% cashback

        • They are labeled new which means they are new, the store sells both new and refurbished units, refurbished units will be labeled refurbished

        • +1

These are new, but they’re also returns. Called Lenovo and asked and was told they’re new but return units… could mean extra stock from other retailers or maybe not reaching the main store.

Few days ago saw the desktops tab and a listing specifically said refurbished.

Not sure if they would label return units that have been opened as “new”….

I'm wondering if there will be a decent deal for an entry level 4050 gaming laptop as part of BF or CM.

I'm looking for something for the teenage son but don't want to spend a heap. This deal is tempting but I recall seeing a comment recently about the 3050 about to be 3 gens old (I think).

    • The Lenovo LOQ AMD with a 4050 ends up being around $1150 after cashback - that's a decent option.

    • what game is he playing? 3050 is more than enough at medium settings FHD (1920x1080)

      • Like all (most) kids, he is into Roblox and Fortnite but getting a dedicated gaming laptop with dedicated GPU will mean he will expand into other games.

        Maybe the 3050 will do.

  • Does anyone have experience with Lenovo warranty and repair support? I’m loyal to HP because they’re amazing at it, but would consider this if Lenovo are good (and will never touch an Acer for this reason lol)

    • I’ve had bad customer service from Lenovo. I remember the last time I tried buying from them I said, “Never again.” But my kid needs a laptop for school next year and this deal is tempting me. But I’ve also had terrible customer service from Dell and Acer. Apple is expensive for a laptop that might get destroyed in a kid’s school bag. I’ve just looked on productreview and all the computer companies seem to have terrible customer service reviews. I’m running out of options on who to buy from.

      • That’s unfortunate to hear. If it’s important to you, HP customer service is amazing. I might stick with them…

      • the 20% cashback is nice but this laptop most likely not suitable for school use. It is too Power Hungry and too Heavy.

        • Thanks for that advice. I’ll probably wait for back to school laptop sales, as there might be better and more suitable deals then.

          • @Saver Scott: Lenovo is good. Take a look at their L13 yoga, their cheapest model $1263.17 - 20% cashback is a great laptop for high school kids. You get Touch Screen, Pen in a small and light package. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, a E14 Gen 6 AMD is $919 - 20% Cashback = that's around $750 for a very powerful computer!

      • I had good customer experience from Dell under warranty. I bought one of those cheap $300 netbook style laptops. Charging port broke within warranty period. They sent a guy to my house who replaced it.

    • Yep, my Thinkpad camera stopped functioning and by extension windows hello, and they sent out a technician to my house within a week to repair my laptop free of charge :)

  • Its keyboard is not backlit (unfortunately?), as stated in the tech specs on the parent page here.

    • @JarrodsTech can confirm it's not backlit?

      • +6

Ours isn't, I bought the same thing from Officeworks. Worth noting this is the new LOQ Essential, it's a completely different chassis from the OG LOQ. Our video won't be up until mid December.

        • Dang, was just about to pull the trigger on 2 laptops but no backlit keys kills it. :(

          • +1

@LowRange: On the Lenovo US site you can choose backlit for a $20 upgrade, for some reason it's not a choice on AU :(

  • Can someone point me to a cheap non-gaming laptop for basic internet surfing and 15.6" display for watching videos (wink wink).

    • Well here is a basic 15.6" laptop for $428 after coupon: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186140541544

It doesn't have a backlit keyboard or a touchscreen, so I am not sure you would find it suitable for "watching videos".

  • Is the RAM upgradeable to 32GB?

    • +1

      Yes.

      16GB (1x16GB) SO-DIMM DDR5-4800, single SO-DIMM slot, max 32GB (1x32GB)

      • I'm trying to find out too. I saw this document (it's missing the E on the product)

Says max 32GB and has 2 slots (page 2). Can't seem to find it exactly for 15IAX9E. I'm assuming max memory is system-wide max memory, not max per slot:

        "Memory
        Max Memory[1]
        Up to 32GB DDR5-4800

        Memory Slots
        Two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, dual-channel capable

        Memory Type
        DDR5-4800

        Notes:
[1] Maximum memory is only to test technical readiness of notebook. Available memory to sell would vary"

  • Is it better than 1060 for the monke game?

    • Better, but still wouldn't be strong enough for demanding titles like black myth wukong. Settings would have to be low to run smooth.

  • Can you also stack with the 10% off new customer discount? or excluded?

    • +1

doesn't stack, have tried before. the 10% code just replaces the current deal.

  • This or https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879305 ?
I just use internet shopping watching youtube
    And just casual game

    • That of coz if you care about the screen

      • Yeah that's why I just wondering this one only 300 nit … or If use good monitor instead?

        • This has 24% larger screen than the Acer & with extra monitor (4K at reasonable price) is better experience to analyse on the screens (for me;)

  • Any software eng's have laptop recommendations? I don't assume I'll need Dedicated GPU support as it is purely for work, nor do i want something as big as this laptop. preferably slimmer and less than 14 inches.

    Thanks

    • +2

      MacBook Air m2/m3

      • unfortunately i need the use of hyper-v as well, not sure if mac's support hyper v?

        • It's not a bargain but I adore my framework 13 AMD for work, personal and gaming use.

  • Black Friday this Friday, maybe we will have better deals then.

    • Lenovo pricing may not change and I cannot assume cashbacks to be greater than 20%

  • +1

This or HP Victus 15? (RTX 4050, 16GB ram, i5 12450HX, 1TB SSD) $959.2 from HP eBay with 20% off code
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/365040520468?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • Any idea when this HP deal might end?

      • Not sure, but I can see they have low stock. I think I will get Victus for rtx 4050 and 1 TB storage. Hopefully, it is good.

    • +4

With HP, it's Omen 4090 or nothing at all

All Victus run the same crappy 250nits 45% NTSC screen which kills any gaming/media enjoyment

300nits 100% sRGB is the bare minimum for any new laptop over $500 sold today so the penny pinchers at HP, Acer and MSI need to sharpen up

      • Thanks for your thoughts. I did check HP Victus 15 at JB Hi-Fi, the screen is ok compared to Lenovo LOQ (side by side). I think it should be ok for using it indoor. For under $1,000 gaming laptop (with rtx 4050 and 1TB storage), I think Victus is a good deal for now.

  • Anyone suggest a laptop with high refresh rate for overwatch 2?

  • Terms on the 20% cash back state:

Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the merchant site including but not limited to student education codes, employee discounts and price-matching.

Given this deal uses the Lenovo Black Friday code, will the cash back be honored?

    • Yes, BFCM24 is in the eligible code list.

      • Ahh yes, thankyou. I found the fineprint:

        Special notes from store
Promo code: EARLYACCESS, BFCM24 & NOVEMBER24 is eligible for Cashback.

  • Any recommendations for a laptop for general usage and OLED screen?

  • +2

Buy this only if you're happy with the before cashback price since Shopback is notorious for being hit or miss when it comes to big cash backs.

    • thanks, will probably wait for TA and topcashback then to offer 20%

    • Hit or miss as in not honoring the cash back ?

      • As in even if you do it properly, it mysteriously doesn't track on their end.

  • Looking for a laptop for my son who is entering high school next year. Landed on the Lenovo IdeaPad Sllim's, mainly due to their light weight and good battery life (I think!).

The main difference seems to be the processor, all within $100~ of eachother. Any real advantage of one over another in the following? (Especially in terms of battery life)
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/c/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5/

    • Snapdragon® X Plus X1P-42-100 Processor (3.40 GHz) - Windows 11 Home 64 ARM - Integrated Graphics
    • AMD Ryzen™ 5 8645HS Processor (4.30 GHz up to 5.00 GHz) - Windows 11 Home 64 - Integrated Graphics
    • Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 125H Processor (E-cores up to 3.60 GHz P-cores up to 4.50 GHz) - Windows 11 Home 64 - Integrated Intel® Arc™ Graphics
    • +1

Out of those, Ryzen is the best

Take a look at the HP Aero Ryzen ultrabook range for Ryzen light weight and portability - the $869 one will have the longest battery life and all models can be easily charged from a USB PD powerbank for extra battery life

For Intel, the MSI ultrabook is the best deal but in-story only

Skip Snapdragon until at least version 3, still not ready for prime time

      • Thanks for that, some great info. I was look at 14" minimum, however how would a 13.3" go for school use without an external monitor do you think ?

        • +3

Take your son to an Officeworks, Harvey Norman or JB so he can compare the screens and more importantly, the form factor and keyboard layout

He needs to be one who is comfortable using it

With no resolution change, going from 13.3" to 14" isn't a huge difference but some people dislike the smaller/shrunken keyboards on 13.3" laptops
