Good deal. I bought $100 more and thought that was good.

    • +1

      What is the battery capacity?

      • +1

        65Wh (just checked mine)

        • In your day to day use how long does it last?

          • +3

@SahitDagani: Sitting at the desktop it says 11-12 hours. General usage? 6-8 hours. Gaming? Less than 90 minutes.

  • Stock limited in Brisbane.

  • How many nits? 400 sustained I think.

  • +1

Good deal. Needed one for basic spreadsheets and home office use.

Order placed for 2 hour delivery . Sweet!

Great little laptops. FYI the ram is soldered but theres a hidden compartment under a ribbon for a second hard drive.

    • +1

Thanks for the info re. hard drive. My son broke his school laptop and I've bought the R5 version of this to replace it; glad I can take the 500GB SSD out of his previous one and add it to this!

      • How bad is it broken? If it's just the screen and you like to tinker, set it up as a server! If the battery is good, consider it has a built-in UPS :)

        • +2

I've diagnosed it as a motherboard failure unfortunately. The screen cracked when he dropped it but it kept running for 6+ months after that, no real issues as long as I had the touchscreen permanently disabled. Then the other day it turned off for no reason. The charge light wouldn't come on no matter which charging port or USB-C charger I used. I opened it up, removed battery, checked every tape connector etc., but couldn't get it to charge or switch on no matter what.

I've harvested the SSD and formatted it for my gaming laptop, and maybe I can sell/give away the RAM sticks, but that's about all it's good for now.

Wants Intel instead? Bing Lee has the equivalent version at the same price point.

    • +16

      Intel no good these days

      • -2

Efficiency on the latest chips in laptops is actually good. Their earlier ones were a dumpster fire for heat and power draw.

        • +8

Unfortunately the latest Intel chips have better efficiency at the expense of performance. They Ultra 7 258v is about 20% slower than this CPU, which is AMDs previous generation. The new Intel CPUs lack hyper-threading.

          https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/6281vs6016/Intel-Core-U…

I've run them side by side and the Intel unit looks sluggish in certain situations.

          • @shellshocked: Will the OLED or touchscreen version consume more battery?

Trying to decide between ryzen 7 v intel 7 but also OLED vs touchscreen.

Touchscreen not required but for an 11 year old who will run the battery down.

  • up to 11 hours may not be enough for school

    • Kids go to school from 9am-8pm now do they?

      • +2

Those advertised hours are always half in real life use

    • +1

non oled will be a few hours more

    • Nope it's down after 2 hours of gaming :)

    • Kids are at school 6hrs a day, they're looking at their screens for half that.

  • +2

Such a gooooooood price, I had the 7640u version, for $1000 nothing is better than this

  • Does this support dual monitors over usb-c via a usb-c dock ?

    • +1

Yes. It has 2 USB c ports. I have this model.

  • +2

Great little laptop. Plays basic game's or games that user older engines fine. Was playing Beyond All Reason (RTS, from ppl behind Total Annihilation, Planetary Annihilation) via Starlink when weather went to crap on a holiday last month. Also a 65w GAN charger works ok despite windows low charge warning and can sustain+slowly charge when gaming, so saves taking the brick with you.

  • This product cannot currently be purchased online

    Doh

  • +1

    Great price for these specs!

  • +1

One left in Amazon for same price, if you want to use your Amazon GC

    • -5

The Lenovo has AI so if your doing any video editing it speeds thing up a lot.

      • +5

That is a Qualcomm based unit. If you are running bespoke Windows applications you are going to have compatability issues. Also AI is only useful if the application supports it. The GPU on that unit is very average, which is what editing software, will use and not the AI NPU.

      • lol no it won't what are you talking about

    • I'd stear clear of snapdragon processors for Windows for the moment.

They are a 1st gen product and there are known issues particularly with application compatibility.

  • Is the ram and storage upgradable or soldered on?

    • +3

RAM yes, storage no, and it has another m.2 slot.

      • +1

Sorry, should clarify that RAM is soldered, storage is not soldered.

  • Build quality wise i assumed acer has improved a bit?

    • +1

This one is pretty decent. Fully metal, glass touchpad, keyboard is fine, has a few creaks when opening the lid but feels fairly solid overall. Has little pegs at the bottom when you open it up to let cool air in.

  • +2

I need to replace my son's school laptop and this looks like a solid option, but I noticed Officeworks also has the Ryzen 5 8645HS version for $100 less. The R5 version has the same OLED screen and all the other specs look the same. Wondering if I save $100 since my son isn't doing any heavy lifting processor wise… any views?

    • +1

R5 should be fine for school purpose.

    • +1

8645 is more than enough for daily use, only difference is a few more cores and a better igpu on the R7, this will handle some light gaming better than the R5. Not sure if the R5 has better battery life due to the CPU using less power but i would say its probably about the same as the power envelopes will be vey similar for the power profiles.

      I personally would take the R7 but i'm a tech head :)

      • +2

Yeah I'm a tech head too, but tbh I prefer the school laptop has LESS gaming performance because I want my son to get distracted less at school :P

I bought the R5 version as I think it will be a really nice machine for his purposes, and $100 is $100.

        • hahaha yeh i'm with you there but windows has really good controls over what they can and can't install/run on their laptops if you have Family safety app setup… definitely save the $100 if gaming is not in the picture

          • @scud70: Yeah I have the Family Safety stuff setup. I went with the R5 because I already have an RTX 3060 gaming laptop in case I need portable gaming power. School laptop priorities are good battery life, adequate performance and on the cheaper side (without getting a $600 piece of junk).

            • @aelix: Still a lucky kid lol aside from my daughter who has saved up for her own MacBook rest only get work hand me downs …🤣

    • Are you planning to get warranty from OW?

      • No, because it doesn't cover my son dropping the laptop on the ground which is how he broke the last one -_-

        • That's exactly why mine gor hand me downs for first few years… Good thing to my son's can honestly be taken to a panel beaters for repair 🤦🏻

    • It's two less cores and wouldn't have any impact on day to day usage. You get a less powerful iGPU too. That said for just $100 extra it's probably worth it.

  • +2

Bought this last deal, great laptop overall but the fan is annoying. Runs 100% of the time even at idle and has a weird high pitch noise to it

    • +1

Have you tried silent mode in acer sense?

    • I have it. I'd only consider the fan annoying under proper load like a game. Maybe check your settings.

  • -3

If you don't need a portable laptop form, get this for the home study or office.

It is small enough to bolt onto the back of your fixed monitor via vesa mount. It is also quiet.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0DKFKGR4Z

  • Good deal but Acer is notorious for under-engineering their cooling solutions.

    • This one has no trouble maxing out the 8845HS. Runs fairly cool overall too, although the fan can be a little obnoxious ramping up and down constantly.

      • Have you taken a look at the innards ?

        single or dual fans ?

        • Dual fans side-by-side, you can see them underneath. The cooling is extremely good and I've seen no throttling. Benchmarks at the top end for the 8845HS. However, the 780M iGPU is not the full TDP although it's very close (can't remember exactly what it is).

    • What do you suggest with around same spec?

      • At under 1k, this is a good deal. R7 8845 is a great processor with great integrated graphics.

My only concern is the heat and "maybe" the 16GB "soldered" RAM .

        Again great deal under 1k.

        • It manages cooling very well, but like I said the fans can be annoying going into idle all the time. At 100% fan speed it's not that loud compared to other laptops. The soldered 16GB is its biggest weakness, and if you extend the iGPU "VRAM" it will reduce to 14GB.

  • +1

16Gig memory is shared between CPU and GPU. it is likely that memory will be the bottleneck for slowing down the performance. 32GIG should be the good amount of memory.

    • Unlikely to be an issue for the type of games that this is capable of running, it'll all have to be at a lower resolution with low settings so 'vram' won't be much of an issue.

  • +2

This or the U7 model for a $100 more?
I think processor wise they are similar…the U7 model adds touch screen

    • +3

Similar CPU performance, but the Intel 155h has a worse GPU performance and slower NPU for AI. It also needs to reach a higher TDP to obtain similar performance to the Ryzen.

  • Anyone know if this has thunderbolt 4? Can't see it mentioned.
What is the disadvantage without one?

  • +1

Your thoughts on between this vs HP Aero 13.3"?. This is for my son first laptop for school, hopefully will last from year 4 to 6. Both are are similar price point.Like the HP cause it is much lighter.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/875124

    • Either should last well into high school imo

  • What’s the normal price of this

    • It released at $1300 although the MSRP is higher. It was cheap even at $1300 compared to other laptops with these specs.

  • +2
  • I am looking at this deal from Costco USA (my friend is bringing this for me): https://www.costco.com/acer-swift-go-14%22-intel-evo-platfor…
How do you compare this with the one I am looking at?
    Thanks

    • The one you have linked is worse. Much worse display also

      • I am not fussed about the display. Apart from that, what else do you have against it?

        • Chip is also less efficient

          • @evasive: In terms of performance, Ultra 7 outperforms Ryzen 5, no?

            • +1

              @Alph4:

              1. This is Ryzen 7
              2. Efficiency != performance
    • Warranty issues?

  • OP, does this come with touch screen?

  • Out of curiosity, how would this compare?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-swift-go-evo-14-inch-ul…

Has Core Ultra 5, the rest of the specs seem the same and currently $898 at Hardly Normal.

Just for my son starting high school.

    • +1

The extra $100 for Ryzen 7 is probably worth it to future-proof as long as possible, but both options should be fine really for high school purposes…

  • How does this compare with https://amzn.asia/d/gzZtIeM

    • +1

Very different types of laptop, this is much lighter with the smaller screen… That is same chip as the ryzen 5 version mentioned above which is $100 less… The Acer is definitely the better deal whichever one you want to go for… I'm not a big Acer fan but at these prices it's a good deal.

      • +1

        Thank you.

  • This isnt. expired. It is still available at several stores, including Eastern Creek.

  • With this review, they tested the touchscreen model but it had the integrated arc graphics. Online I can only see the iris graphics with the touchscreen models.

    https://www.rtings.com/laptop/reviews/acer/swift-go-14-2024#…

    • Was going to get the touchscreen version to save on battery life but now wondering if I should get the OLED for the integrated arc graphics … or if the iris graphics will be fine. For school for year 6, not needed for gaming (separate gaming laptop) but I expect he'll try some light gaming on it between classes … any advice?

  • Yeah picked one up yesterday.

  • This still seems like the pick of the bunch amongst all the other laptop deals that are out at the moment if looking for something midrange with good portability. Seems like a good all rounder.

  • Hey I was wondering if anyone had some info:

When I'm on battery power with this one, every once in a while the screen flashes black for a split second before returning to normal. Sometimes the AMD driver software comes up on the screen.

Already tried updating the driver (uninstalling it first and then updating), checking power settings, etc.

  • +1

Amazon are price matching this too at the moment, although only 2 in stock… https://www.amazon.com.au/Acer-Swift-Go-SFG14-63-R6PU-Laptop…
