Nice price but ram is soldered, if this was 32gb or upgradable i'd pull the trigger

    • +6

Yeah, basically all slim laptops are soldered though but it is unfortunate they don't all offer 32gb models.

    • Yup 16gb RAM is a dealbreaker

  • +11

It's worth noting for all the laptop deals coming out you may want to wait for Lunar Lake laptops to release.

They should significantly outperform any current laptop, although the price increase may not be worthwhile. That being said, if they do end up hitting over 24 hours of video playback on a single battery charge I'm all for it:
    https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/4/24235329/acer-ifa-2024-new…

    • +8

good maybe that’ll push Qualcomm to fking start updating their drivers

      • i'd stay away from arm for another 5 years

any benefit from the battery is soured the immature architecture support - let others deal with the hassles

reading through that article there doesn't even appear to be an advantage

all pain and no gain imho

        • its fine if you are like me and this is your 3rd device lol (i have a desktop laptop and a surface)

but yeah you cant get actual work done and even then i personally dont want that limitation

If Lunar Lake is that good i’d probably replace my Surface with one from that gen

    • +11

Pretty wary of those claims, 29 hours of video playback on a 65wh battery would require average 2.2w power draw which is madness. At minimum brightness, no sound watching only a 4k YouTube video I tested 7640u model to draw a constant 9.4w, which is a realistic playtime of 7 hours.

      • Do you need to deduct 10% of your estimate to allow for other losses/inefficiencies etc. ?

        • +1

Maybe, figure is from hwinfo measuring battery discharge wattage, but also actual usable battery capacity could be higher/lower than 65wh.

    • +1

The battery endurance of Lunar Lake equipped laptops will definitely best this. That being said, the Acer Swift AI with a Core Ultra 5 is currently on preorder for $1797 at Officeworks.

Stock is expected on October 21st if you can wait. However, the display is a step down from the Acer Swift Go.

    • Just to remind that do avoid the 16gb memory version of lunar lake, since they lock and build the ram along with cpu

    • +1

      but will they be $1000…

  • +1

Nice, was just about to hit 'purchase' as my 4800U has crapped itself…
BUT, I do NEED 32gig RAM (CAD stuff)
    D'oh!

    • +1

Yeah feels like 16gb is quite limiting already in 2024…

      • +4

Time to start complaining about 16gb devices?

      • +8

Especially annoying when USA gets most models in 32gb for a very tiny upgrade cost. laptop RAM cost somehow becomes infinite the moment it crosses Aus borders.

    • +1

You will also need a graphics card to do any 3D CAD beyond making simple models for a 3D printer.

So by the time you add 16Gb and a decent graphics card, you need to spend $1.5k-$2k, or beyond

    • thats a shame - i am looking for a cheap linux ultrabook, hardly need high end specs, that 4800u is a great CPU

let me guess, lenovo? it's crazy how little laptops are lasting these days - hopefully not the case for premium builds

about to pull the trigger on an i5 11th gen ultrabook for $225, soldered ram unfortunately, should be OK for my use case though

  • So tempted to buy, I think I just might today! With afterpay tho…

    • +2

Would be best to buy after pay tho…

      • +1

        hahaha,

i mean it'll be the same price either way

  • Just need someone to jump in and comment about Acer build quality 😅

    • This lappie is plastic…. :)

      • +1

doesnt it have an aluminium body?

        • -1

Pretty sure it isn't, previous model was plastic and chassis looks exact same, seems as though other models do have aluminium but can't 100% verify info for this one. (SFG14-63-R6PU)

          • @zachhambo: Yeh, the U7 model mentions that it's an aluminium body.
Would expect the Ryzen to be the same

          • +6

@zachhambo: I have this exact laptop from the deal a few months ago and can confirm it's 100% aluminium both top and bottom. Only plastic is the keycaps and screen bezel. Also has two fans and improved air flow compared to previous Swift Go models.

            • +6

@Yuri Lowell: I also have this exact same laptop and it's awesome.

              The screen is amazing.

The build is excellent. I do move around a lot with it and have had no issues.

Use is mainly for work and performance is great. I do sometimes reach near the 16GB ram limit.

            • @Yuri Lowell: Interesting, I have previous model which has 2 fans but they're quite small, good to know they improved it because hs chip and 780m draws a bit more power than u. 7640u model feels like plastic to me

              • @zachhambo: They're pretty small in mine too. It blows air upward towards the screen through two vents, I believe the older model may have had the left vent blocked? You can easily achieve the maximum performance of the 8445HS.

            • -2

@Yuri Lowell: The keyboard is plastic?

              Pass

2 x USB-C (supports data, display and power delivery)
    that usb c is usb 4 ?

    • +4

      yes

    • +2

According to the manual (page 15):

      USB Type-C information
      • Supports DisplayPort™ audio/video output.
      • Compatible with USB4® port.
      • Delivers up to 3 A at 5 V DC for USB charging.
      • DC-in: requires power adapter or power source providing 100 W at 20 V.
For optimal performance, please use a certified Acer power adapter or USB Power Delivery device.

    • tfw it's jumped to $1599…
I was gonna price match at officeworks …

  • Hmm this or something like the Lenovo Yoga 7, a bit more money, lower res screen, but bigger battery

  • seems like a good deal, however if I wanted a bigger screen size, mainly for study and media consumption, no gaming, is this one here a good laptop?
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-ideapad-s5-16-2k-1…

  • -1

isn't this price been a while?

    • +2

The ryzen 5 was usually at this price.

I paid $1399 for this Ryzen 7 model from office works.

      • +1

lost track of so many laptop prices these days, OW keeps flipping them up & down all the time.

  • +1

Great bang-for-buck laptop, but the trackpad really lets it down.

    • Can you elaborate? I'm seriously considering getting this and this would be a deal breaker

      • +1

I have this laptop from this deal and it seems ok to me. But I use a mouse past the inital setup.

  • Hmm to keep the Surface Laptop 5 i5/16gb/512GB from the recent good guys deal - or buy this one?

    • Could probably sell the Surface Laptop 5 for a profit. The feel of the surface hardware-wise is more premium, but tbh I'd prefer beefier hardware over look and feel.

      • It's purely a spreadsheet/email/document/chrome laptop though, so, should be ok?

        • The surface will keep up just fine with that, no doubt.

Battery should be better on the Acer, but the 12th gen in the Surface ain't bad either.

    • +1

I'd keep the Surface ! that said let me know if you're selling the Surface

  • is it good for gaming and can I add m.2 ssd

    • +2

BIOS reports a second m.2 slot but I've not opened mine to confirm.

      • According to review I posted below there's only one M.2 slot - I don't see how there could be two given the slim form factor.

        • +3

There is a second M.2 slot hidden under a ribbon on the left.

  • +1

Very gimped battery at 54Wh, the advertised 11 hours will very likely be at complete idle (5w) i.e. not regular use.

        That product code is NX.KTSSA.002.
        Officeworks product code is ACKTSSA002.
Doesn't appear to be the exact same model? Also the colour on Acer says "Iron" - while the Officeworks page says "Silver" (yes these are actually different model colours specified by Acer).
Edit: Well the link from Acer leads to the Officeworks page. This is some terrible documentation.
Edit 2: The wifi spec on Acer states 802.11ax (Wifi 6/E) while Officeworks states Wifi 7 (802.11be). Additionally there's Gigabit Ethernet listed without having an ethernet port. This is raising more questions than answers.

        • +1

Ikr, it's so hard to get proper details. I know 100% that 7640u previous model is 65wh

        • +2

I actually scrolled through the spec page to find Acer's product code.

I personally rarely trust any sellers spec page and try to find the manufacturers when possible.

          • +1

@Syaoran74: The issue with Acer is, their own spec pages are hardly reliable. I recently purchased a monitor that has IPS in the listing but it was actually VA, so I managed to get a refund based on that.

        • looks like it is the 65wH as its the SFG14-63-R6PU model. This laptops not going to be a great portable option anyhow

    • +2

65Wh in mine and I'd say that 11 hours is accurate. General browsing and 70% screen brightness sees about 5-10W. Gaming or running any intensive application hammers the battery though, but this is a fairly powerful CPU so that's to be expected.

      • At 10W the battery only gives 6.5 hours though, what I'm saying is you'd only get the 11 hours if you didn't do much other than text editing/scrolling webpages. Even YouTube video playback requires around 7W so I would say the battery life is more realistically 9 hours (with the 65Wh capacity).

        • The 11 hours is fairly accurate, I get around that with mine.

        • It sits at 5W 90% of the time, but I was checking HWinfo when I was opening a new browser page and it spiked to 10W.

8845HS computers very popular around here this month. Half a dozen or more.

  • Thanks OP bought!

  • This or a Lenovo Yoga 9i w/intel 1360p, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, 2.8k oled monitor? (assuming both are the same price)

    Cheers.

    • $1.1k for a Yoga 9i ??? Where did they sell this?

      • -6

bought it un-used off facebook for $1000. happy with it, just wondering if this laptop is any better given that there would be a nil changeover price.

        • -1

No idea why im getting downvotes.. im just asking a simple f***ing question.

  • +4

The 2.8k OLED 90Hz is an absolute gem. Highly recommend.

    • seems unnecessarily high res for 14", wouldn't you prefer better battery life?

      • +1

Don't think it impacts that much, it's lower resolution than MacBook 14" pro and they also have good probably better battery life.

        • -2

the oled helps if you stick to dark themes

but battery could be maybe last 10-20% longer with a lower res too, i guess you can always drop the refresh rate

re macs they use mobile phone processors so comparisons are out the window

all im saying is that the pixel density is a bit of an unnecessary overkill

      • +3

Everything looks super sharp with some scaling. I could never go back to 1080p regardless of size.

  • BFD and BD are coming. Should hold or hold?

    • +1

      whats this?

  • With Windows 10 out of support next October. You bet there will be more deals then.

I'm holding out meanwhile will try to upgrade unsupported laptop. And see what happens first

Either Black Friday otherwise no point atm

    • why?

most laptops come w w11 support lmao

      • Yeah but when Win10 out of support more people will buy laptops and there will be discounts

        • I don't think there will be any change as W10/W11 licenses still cost the same.

Neg due to serious issues with seller.

    1. They sold me an iPhone the sales rep claimed had type C. It had a lightning to type c charger, though not type c and therefore wasn’t compatible with my type c devices. Officeworks refused the return despite the product being unopened.

    2. I was talked into extras cover on a laptop. Warranty was denied when the USB port became faulty and one port no longer charges. The laptop also seriously over heats and a key cap broke off. Office works is refusing to cover any of it under consumer law or extras cover. Acer is refusing to cover any of it. I paid $1600 for a laptop that lasted 8 months, with extras cover.

Yes I know my consumer rights and will get this sorted, but the fact I have to go through consumer protection routes is the reason for my neg.

Also negging due to issues with Acer warranty as I don’t believe a USB port not functioning after 8 months is general wear and tear.

    • Officeworks refused the return despite the product being unopened

Officeworks has change of mind policy even if you open the package. I don't believe op.

      • -1

Officeworks has advertises a change of mind policy even if you open the package.

They also advertise and stated their extras cover covers what warranty doesn't.

It was an iPhone and they stated that the policy specifically doesn't apply to Apple products. Funny how it specifically doesn't apply to the product I'm attempting to return. If you for whatever are defending Officeworks due to being associated, please DM me so I can get this resolved… Otherwise, why would you assume I'm lying on a public forum with absolutely no gain to me?

I give Officeworks credit for often honoring their price beat policy, but outside of that they have little to no respect of consumer law.

        • Update on this:

After around 30 Facebook msgs, 10 contact forms and 5+ calls I got ONE of the two issues sorted.

In other words I was stuck with a faulty laptop for 11 months while they attempted to drag out to the warranty end date.

  • How well would this work for high school?
I know the Lenovo L13 Yoga is the usual recommendation as it has a touch screen.
Not sure how essential a touch screen would be? The school is pushing for touch screens with stylus

    • +2

here you go, hard to beat at the price

        Thank you!
I've seen the seller ACT recommended in other threads, especially when talking about BYOD for high school kids.
Probably a better idea to get a cheap device and see how my boy goes with it (i.e how soon it gets lost, thrown under a bus, set on fire etc).
        Once again, appreciate your suggestion
