Nice spot, Ryzen 5 8640u variant $868.80 also

Any ideas on battery life, for either of these variants?

    • +3

I have always hated HP. Is this true?

    • +1

Thank you for the info, just in the market for a new laptop, I will forever phase out HP in my life.

    • +9

The company that makes servers is called HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise). They are an entirely different company to the one that made this laptop, which is just called HP and makes generally makes a lot of money off ink rather than war crimes.

Also lol at the copy/pasted social media garbage. Or, if you wrote that yourself, you can say "killing" here without hurting your precious chances of becoming an influencer.

      • +3

There's a rabbit hole I kinda wish I hadn't gone down yet also kinda needed to.
Confusing HP and HPE is understandable. The logical assumption, given the unambiguous name, is HPE is a division of HP.
That said, if someone's boycotting something on principle the lowest bar is accurately identifying the target of their boycott.

As a matter of principle I don't knowingly buy any products manufactured in or sold from an illegal Israeli settlement.
Unfortunately, as it turns out, Google, Meta, Amazon, NVIDIA and 108 other enterprise are all operating in various settlements.

Also, while none of the 112 enterprises operating in the illegal settlements directly participates in war crimes, many of the companies - according to UNCHR investigations since 2013 - at the very least help fund the illegal settlements & similarly assists their illegal expansion throughout Palestine.

Tech companies, though, while still not participating in war crimes directly have been found to be facilitating war crimes by allowing their AIs & various other products/platforms to be used in the identification/selection of targets, planning & execution of attacks.

    • Lol why would not supporting HP get rid of Hamas?

The only way to get rid of Hamas is by eliminating them.

  • I can't find the 32gb variant

    • Doesnt look like HP do a model with 32GB. It's LPDDR5x so not as simple as fitting a 2nd stick.

Good deal or wait for BF?

    • +1

I would think this will be BF price

Im waiting for the date to qualifyfor TRS

      • 60days before you fly out right?

    • +1

I keep hesitating and it’s just a laptop for a kid starting high school. This ticks most boxes and the price is fine…

      • +3

Check your school’s BYOD partner. I am on the same boat and the school partnered with HP which I am very reluctant to get. They usually give 3yr onsite support and accidental damage warranty. Which I think is really important for HS kids. Could save you another laptop

        • I’ve got two spare laptops anyway but one has been through another kid and is well worn in and missing a few things like the pen and mouse buttons…
I still think I’ll just send this latest kid out with that old laptop anyway… but I do think they deserve to not be embarasssed first day with an old used busted up laptop… but I’m happy to save cash and recycle/reuse too

      • battery life is key for this purpose

      • +4

Last few years the Boxing Day sales have been just as good. Whilst not important for many, for school it means you dont blow 4 months warranty this year.

    • These are the BF deals

HP added a bunch of new products, dropped prices of others and extended the "October" HP20OCT code

The Omen 4090 dropping to under $3K is also the sign

  • +3

Specs are slightly wrong btw there's no fingerprint reader

  • This is FHD, QHD additional $330. RRP 2699 for FHD in 2024 is …

    • +2

No this is 16:10 - something that is noticeably better than 16:9 on a smaller 13.3" screen

The WQXGA Aeros were cleared out 2 months ago for a similar price but you only got Zen 3

With this Zen 4 Aero, it is very easy to buy a replacement 13.3" high res/OLED panel and DIY upgrade

      • That would be excellent. Any links pointers on an OLED replacement display, please?

  • +4

This is a great laptop bargain
that I want but do not need…

  • +1

How would something like this Acer swift compare? Need something for school next yr and kid wants touchscreen so weighing up so many options … Aware this Acer doesn't have touch but the OW model does but isn't OLED.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-swift-go-evo-14-inch-ul…

    • Bing Lee has the U7 for $1198 thats a $200 drop since Oct
OW has the U7 touch version for $1247

    • Would also like to know

    • -1

Any would be more than sufficient. Not sure why they want a touchscreen laptop but if that's what they want, then get that. They certainly don't need an OLED screen (imagine an OLED with fingerprints all over it), and OLED would add to the cost. I'd be putting more emphasis on the processor and the igpu, so would be wanting a 780m at minimum, or if it's Intel, then the Arc iGPU. Would last them longer.

  • That's a nice bit of kit

I am a massive ozb fan, but am a lurker. I reset my password multiple times so I could actually say… thank you OP. my daughter is going to be one happy camper. 👍🙌👏

    • +2

As someone who gets randomly logged out and forgets their pw all the time I respect the effort

    • I wouldnt take a laptop camping. Risk of damage, lack of power source, etc

      • It really depends on your camping style.

Someone who prefers camping without seeking permission from property owners may find it handy for resisting bullets, while a person who does their camping in 3 day blocks at bush raves may appreciate the large but less cumbersome portable horizontal surface.

    • Got one for my daughter starting high school next year too. Hope it survives a few years of use.

  • Touchscreen?

  • Is this good enough for Lightroom on the go?

  • Any 2k screen at this price? I'm looking for oled ideally. Acer does a good one

  • +1

This is a bit out of left field but what do you reckon the chances are that the panel in this laptop is the same as in the prior model HP Pavilion Aero 13? This is the one. Both 1200p 400 bits, 60Hz, 100% sRGB - so probably the same?

The reason I ask is that I’m just vainly hoping it might be a different panel, as the polarisation is the wrong way ‘round on last year’s model - screen is completely black when viewing through polarised glasses. A bit of a specific use case but I do a lot of work while camping.

Or, alternatively, if someone has this exact model and has polarised sunnies and can check for me that would be amazing?? I’ll buy you a beer!

    • +1

i wish i could test the latest one for you, but as soon as i read this i got my sunnies out and tested the old 7735U and laughed, what a weird problem to have!

  • +3

ive been using the Ryzen 7 7735U with the 680M version of this AERO for work the last year (maybe a little less)

fan is loud and on alot
the air vent is between the keyboard and screen, so if you have it docked, you better leave it open
bluetooth at times is a bit funky with my keychron keyboard and mx master 3, however i dont seem to have the issue when docked at work
battery isnt great if consuming media or gaming but charges ridiculously fast if youre just browsing etc it lasts quite a while

other than these quirks, i absolutely love it and i am very tempted to get this one. if it had more ram i'd jump at it without thinking

i finished diablo 2 and diablo 3 on my laptop as well as playing a little bit of diablo 4 which runs as good as my steam deck, as well as some forza horizon (all in 1080p medium settings) - mind you im talking about the older one, not this one

    • When you say the battery isn't great for media, what are we talking? Like 2-3 hours for video playback?

      • +2

from what i recall, probably 2 hours. i've had some meetings on site using teams and even that was maybe 2 hours and it was clobbering the battery

        • Wow that's so much less than reviews reporting over 9 hours for this 8840U model. I wonder if it's a big improvement over the 7735U and/or tuning like not running on full display brightness makes all the difference?

    • Would be great if you could comment on the battery life in a bit more detail.

When you say "lasts quite a while" when browsing..is that 5 hrs…? 10?

      Cheers mate

  • Tempted, but hesitant to buy an HP laptop. How are they compared to Dells/Lenovos?

    • Same

  • Can’t find specs on touch screen. Can someone please confirm. TIA

    • +2

Plastic screen, so 99% sure it's not a touchscreen

Doesn't mention touchscreen anywhere on the listing either.

  • This vs thinkpad T14s Gen 4??

    • +1

From what I read, thinkpad Ts are very durable. HP normally not esp at this price point

      • Yes you have to be more careful with HP. I dropped my spectre and the corner folded rendering one usb c port unusable. Done the same thing with my work T14 and not a scratch. I replaced my personal spectre 360 with T14s gen4 from the Lenovo outlet deal.

      • The Lenovo T14s is a solid, business grade laptop

The HP likely will have more performance for the money, though

I'd personally choose a Thinkpad T series over this, but it depends on your budget and what's important to you

  • Besides intel do amd windows laptop overheat like crazy from just turning it on. Is this Windows or Intel problem.

    • Every small form factor will overheat during stressful tasks. I have read macbooks are better in this regard but haven't personally used those.

      • I have macbook for this reason doing good so far. My ols intel laptop overheat even on idle. Does anyone know if amd have improved on this issue

  • Out of stock now

  • +1

    Deal back on

    • Hey is the only diff between this and the more expensive one the screen? If so do you know if the battery life difference would be big? Thanks
