    Nice share OP.

    • Looks like a great deal.
Just remember that in AMD's numbering scheme, Ryzen 7 7735u is actually a Zen3+ architecture.

  • -3

No USB C power port, has a proprietary port.

  • This vs this? (not expired btw)

    • +1

      Hp one with 7735u..
Had good experience with hp and worse with Acer (doesn't last long and their support makes you go through hell)

    • +3

Acer is more powerful (and power hungry) and has a better display (OLED 90Hz). An extra C Port on the Acer too.

IMO most laptops in this price range are similar in build quality. If there was one laptop I really wouldn't buy again it would be a Lenovo Yoga (snapped hinge broke screen 1yr out of warranty), which is neither of these.

      • +3

        +1 for avoiding lenovo.

        • which brands are your 'favourite' now?

I thought it'd like to buy lenovo laptop cause I used to see em on sale a lot and their bloatware ain't bad.

I had an hp lapotp once but it's pretty ass

Now I'm not sure if I should try acer or lenovo for next lapotp

          • +1

@AndrewMTG: I have a Yoga Pro and works like a dream. Each to their own I guess.

          • +2

@AndrewMTG: Not the same user you are replying to, but I ended up going the Macbook Air 15 M2 route. Made sense as I'm studying so battery life was the top priority and OS didn't matter to me. Recently set up a family member with a new Surface Laptop 15 with ARM and it's a brilliant bit of kit, a very similar experience to what I'm getting on my Macbook, but running Windows (Haptic trackpad, high-res 3:2 screen, good battery life are the highlights for me and I would happily pay a premium for these features alone).

Lenovo Education Store is compelling (.edu email required). Sometimes they include longer warranties which is always nice (I had 5 yrs on a Yoga 7i 15 before I sold it). Definitely beats the competition on price, and stock is rarely an issue. I just don't trust their 360 hinge design (the one that broke was a family member's Yoga 7i 14 for reference).

@heef: Yeah i mean anybody can reply to my comment.

Just curious what everyone is rocking.

I've never used macos but tempted to get a m chip series macbook for the battery life as well.

My cousin has a M2 macbook

          • +1

@AndrewMTG: Dell (XPS) is my favourite. Extremely well built machines and very reliable as well. Only issue is their brand new price lol. I buy used (and two generations old can be had for less than half the price) and they last few years of regular use easily. Amazing screens and highly efficient nice designs.

          • @AndrewMTG: I bought the Macbook M2 15" 16gb 1TB for just under $2000. Even looking at just the raw stats, the macbook is a good deal and its nice to be able to carry the laptop around without having to carry a charger with me. Its the only apple product I own but it has been a good product since.

        • With the Chinese economy slowing, there are more deals from Lenovo.

IMO quality assurance post covid for a lot of products feom all is prob starting to return to normal.
Have a Gen 4 Thinkpad going fine but also have a less than 1 year Yoga actually smoke out and got full refund.

      • Zen 4 on Acer is more efficient and more powerful than zen 3 in hp and one of the most efficient laptop chips you can buy, it just has a higher max wattage for intense loads. Acer also has 50% bigger battery and OLED display

I have the Acer ryzen 7. Haven't experienced any issues. It's light and sturdy. Screen is amazing. Does the job for me.

      It's also the 8645 processor.
Unfortunately the RAM is not upgradable.

This is my 3rd Acer (previously owned spin 5) had no issues.

I guess each to their own experience and usage.

      • How is it in terms of gaming? Plan to get it for my wife who also plays casual games, eg stardew valley, and it takes two

        • +1

I don't really game on it.

Use it more work wise, coding and regular office duties.

          So can't comment games wise,.sorry.

    • +2

Have that exact laptop. Very happy with it so far, no troubles, screen is amazing :)

  • +1

$896.80 for the ryzen 5 on ebay - is the r7 worth the extra $100?

  • +1

I got one of the R5 earlier this year, also on discount and around this price above as I recall. Very light at less than 1kg, metal construction (not sure how sturdy), really nice screen, battery life was only ok (43Wh), not touch screen, finger print login was very nice. Used it as a backup laptop when travelling before it got snaffled by family (work requires I use a dud dell lattitude which is absolute rubbish with 3 motherboard replacements already - last time included smoke wafting out of the speaker grill).

    • +1

Can be charged by usb c?

      • +2

Yep, charging indicator LED works too

    • What's the battery life like on these? Could you get 7 or 8 hours out of it?

  • -1

Hey whaddayaknow, a well priced machine with 16gb of ram. Nice share.

  • Hmm… with TRS down further $110 … bargain?

  • +1

7735u mobile CPU is ZEN3, so Ryzen 5000/6000.

    • +1

      For those who care:

      good that you are aware

    • +2

For those who care:…HP is complicit in the apartheid regime of Israel due to…

Mate this is ozbargain. We don't bat an eye to the CCP and their companies, let alone an American one… As long as the price is right, that's all that matters here.

    • People making political statements need to do more research. There are plenty of products you use every day, and are completely oblivious to, where multiple companies are involved with something you don't like. If your are making a political statement about Israel, you pretty much wouldn't be able to buy any technological product from any major company. If you really care about this, why don't you have a look at all the technology patents in Israel and stop using all the products which relate to it, rather than isolating one company.

    • Nah rather use nurofen for my inflammation thanks

  • This does support charging over USB C, however they only include a barrel charger in the box.

Note that this is still Zen 3+.

  • +1

Can this handle the new monke game well?

  • I got the Ryzen 5 from OW Oct last year.
Its super light, i dont like typing on it because of the key travel. Feels i have to press harder. But its not for me, kids and wife happy with it.

But they've also told me the letter C sometimes doesnt register

  • Looking for a laptop (the R7) for an engineering student starting next year. Is this suitable for CAD, etc? How's the battery life?

    • +2

Don't know about CAD on this. Could try this one with graphics card for ~$1288 (but not sure about battery life, engineering has pretty long days)
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364816077113?itmmeta=01J60EDS0TC…

    • +1

CAD should run no problems on this.
Yes a GPU would help with high complexity models but I've run solidworks and Fusion on integrated graphics without issue.

If anything the small screen might be a bit of a limitation - definitely consider having a monitor at home to plug into at least.

Also for maths subjects you'll need to do a fair bit of handwriting, consider whether you are happy to use pen and paper or if you want to budget for a secondary tablet + stylus

Finally pretty much every classroom has ample chargers so dw too much about battery life

  • Is this good enough for lightroom? I need a decent travel laptop and been looking to get an Macbook Pro M1 for cost but this one is cheaper…

  • -1

Is this good for a retired couple who keeps asking me which laptop they should get and don't want a Chinese computer?

Mostly it will sit docked but occasionally they will take it when they travel.

    • Go tell them everything’s made in China now, so they need to move on with their life……
Honestly, if they mean a Chinese brand, it’s really just Lenovo.
Tell them to go to HN so the sales people over there will educate them on the most suitable laptop for them, at the same time nothing Chinese.

    • No good for them, made in China

    • Well if they mean brand, there are many non-chinese brands… But chances are, they are still made in China or some of the components are Chinese made, as basically it's cheap in China and companies want to maximise profit somehow. It's not easy to find consumer products without any Chinese components.

Non-chinese brands: Dell, Samsung, Sony, LG, Asus, Acer, Panasonic, HP… Apple. Mix of American / South Korean / Japanese / Taiwanese brands.

      • They mean brand. Of course everything is made in china in part but there is a difference between a processor being made in China and a Chinese company that is run from China (see what happened with Huawei).

But I have a house full of Xiaomi so it is very much their preference and not mine.

  • My understanding from looking at the specs for the R5 is that the 16 GB of RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Can anyone more knowledgeable confirm?

    • +1

RAM for almost all light weight ultrabooks are soldered

      • Thought so but thanks for confirming.

  • Was thinking of buying this but spent the extra $100 and got the Acer swift go instead from Officeworks.

The better screen, CPU and larger battery sold it for me.
On the downside the Acer was a fair bit heavier at 1.3kg.
